with the police buildings torched and looting across the u.s. as americans went vent their rage for a 4th day over the death and police custody of george bush. from l.a. to new york riot police. clashes with protesters sporadic violence continues to break out over the weekend in america. and in stark contrast to those scenes of
9:01 pm
looting and violence there have been peaceful marches in memory of george floyd in some parts of the country as more cities announce plans to hold community vigils. from our studios in moscow this is our international i'm sean thomas certainly glad to have you with us. all right civil unrest is spreading across the u.s. as anger over the death of george floyd at the hands of minneapolis police boils over demonstrations have erupted in cities across the country since the fatal incident last monday amid looting torched buildings and violent clashes with police the full mobilization of the national guard was announced is the 1st time that has happened since world war 2.
9:02 pm
what. if they don't want to give us justice and they're not going to be any peace so much go we are tired his name was george clooney. i want i want change we all want change. we got white people thank you storm national buildings and the stake in a country's capital with a yours but if they see us with a rock they can shoot us in the face with rubber bullets if they see us with anything that looks like a good they can kill it on a daily basis. this is what you get when you don't hold other cops accountable when you let them kill
9:03 pm
other people when you let them kill us when you don't hold your partner accountable this is it this is. protesters have been targeting police stations and patrol cars during the week and they were demanding the arrest of the officer who kneeled on floyd's neck before he died something that has now happened on a charge of 3rd degree murder now the fatal arrest happened on monday 3 officers were there as well and stood by as floyd was pinned to the ground by amy for almost 10 minutes earlier i spoke with george floyd's uncle about the tragic event. this young man stands over you know when he's with his knee on his neck. and. the whole process was 9 minutes and 27 seconds and it's never seen anybody executed. 800000000 people in the world and by minutes he had security because he called for
9:04 pm
his mother asked her years ago tomorrow and. he went blank and. he's never said another word and this young man that stood over him with his knee on his neck he had a. a monster look in his eye like you know what. this is my job to gaze at literally that's what it seemed like. a didn't had no emotion he didn't have any did not get any remorse it looked like he was housed in after a big animal kill a big gang was telling what it looked like he would just stand in there. just absolutely blank. they said that my nephew died at the hospital well. there were 30 people standing around there's an angel and i mean. that took the video and i talked and she's told me she's like mr jones like. i realize where do
9:05 pm
you know what we got some in common watch it just young lady because i seen their ways of me you can come in here if you guys you. know on the streets of minneapolis minnesota 5 o'clock in the military i didn't give young men literally my nephew he didn't look like pete. good whatsoever. and they came to stay a risk to him the particular one the head is the only state yesterday. and therefore it was full of them and the other 3. has not been. has not even been approached. crowds of protesters have gathered outside the white house where tensions have been running high. right.
9:06 pm
earlier president trouble warned protesters over breaching the white house promoter and said anyone who did would be met by the secret service with vicious dogs and quote ominous weapons them strangers have pushed security barricades down pennsylvania avenue while police responded with tear gas trump himself is not even at the white house but instead is in florida where he attended the space x. rocket launch on saturday. the situation is also tense right now in los angeles police have been firing rubber bullets at the crowds there with the authorities using batons on demonstrators as well during clashes several patrol cars were vandalized and the city has seen large scale protests with over 500 people arrested on friday night. to r.t. america's natasha sweet who is in l.a.
9:07 pm
natasha talk to me about the situation on the ground there what is that been like in l.a. this weekend was it a sudden burst of tension there or as a kind of been building throughout the week. well you know the initial protests that happened in minneapolis and los angeles was the 1st city to have a break of protest so there has been some tension here from the very beginning after this is happening you know there was a lot of outrage certainly and now as you know there's more than 30 cities there are participating in some type of protest for cross the country after the death of george floyd and as you mention you know was a night there were more than 500 people who were arrested in downtown los angeles but we have protests that are there happening in several places across the city here in l.a. we have you know protests happening downtown we have protests happening in the fairfax district now that's near a popular mall called to grow so that's closer to even the hollywood area here not
9:08 pm
as to mill you with this area and at least one please hers were damaged and the other 2 were just set on fire today and 5 cops were also percs downtown so we know that mary said he spoke and not too long ago and he's talking about having in pm curfew so that the same thing won't happen that we saw all last night that the only black lives matter protesters who basically started this movement they're seeing that police have been brutal that they've been violent and. not as peaceful as as the mayor has been saying that they work and we understand in oakland. 2 federal officers were shot and one of those officers dying as a result i think we have a sound bite from the us. last night in oakland california an assassin cowardly shot to federal protective service contractors as they stood watch over
9:09 pm
a protest one officer was killed and the other is in critical condition the f.b.i. the oakland police supported by the department of homeland security are investigating that attack when someone targets a police officer or a police station with an intention to do harm and intimidate that is an act of domestic terrorism. and at least 7500 protesters took to the streets in oakland demonstrators causing great damage all across the city there fires were set officials reporting cases and vandalism and to local businesses and while many arrests were made police were not very specific if. the actual shooters of those police officers were arrested so still a lot of unanswered questions here and the chaos is just beginning all right natasha suite one of our colleagues there in the united states in l.a. specifically stay safe and thank you for staying across the situation for us thank
9:10 pm
you. all right over 30 cities in the u.s. have seen protests curfews have been imposed across minnesota but also in atlanta los angeles cincinnati denver louvel and portland the national guard has been drafted in for a number of those states now of over work when new york thousands took to the streets and clashed with police freelance journalist william whiteman was following the events for us. i'm now standing in front of a line of police. just moments ago they attacked us completely unprovoked i owe. these are different police than what we've been seeing the rest of the march so i think getting over it was normal police officers no weapons or nothing like that we
9:11 pm
now have police homed with billy clubs and they attacked demonstrators completely unprovoked we're being people who are completely unarmed it was a very very aggressive show of force the police are definitely a lot more militarized now and i have seen the organizers here really excellent people from direct confrontations with the police actually seen them directly and so be you know a couple of moments where certain individuals tried to. attack the police as you can see now they are now showing their own mother and 6 when we were going to when we were trying to when we were down we. were prying pressure and chasing the police now. where the one saying with the line of protest. there was several police officers who became isolated because barricades were put out in front of the police car. and they're effectively ambushed there were several
9:12 pm
projects house road as you can see that's one of the custom for us now it's been smashed tries today is going on things are really heating up certainly not used by us the ponderous and as we've seen in the previous days of protests when that happens. you know how tense to break loose but here in downtown brooklyn where we are now it has been. just pandemonium for the last couple of hours i would say. after protests overnight on friday the new york police department claimed to agitators were at play in the city. we not just the police department but all of new york city suffered last night after professional and organized agitators cause havoc on the city resulting in violence injured police offices and the destruction of property the mayor of minneapolis is urging the public to stay home explaining that large crowds gives cover to people intent on committing crime he also called
9:13 pm
the violent riots quote domestic terrorism and many of the areas that have seen protests over george floyd's death have also seen significant looting here you can see scenes in portland where people are emptying out an apple store. and anybody comes by over the water you know for the good feel welcome and hopefully you know this will help so that they will come and destroy our property here. was. the right way to do list do it right that you know i'm. pretty sure is in your gut this are actually going to go back down there protect people businesses and run away like that. but you got to fix it forget it you got
9:14 pm
to do it. mr mayhem a friend of george floyd's a family says people want justice. people don't know but this is like our baby for police killing in our community you know even peaceful you know and right now we're just we're fed up this anger that's been boiled over multiple deaths in our community so i was surprised by the reaction from this debt they tried to implement a curfew for us it worked at all we're still angry most angry behind that you know up there were more buildings that burned down after we found out about. the 3rd degree charge it is just it was it was definitely intentional there's actually 4 officers that that that's involved in this crime and this act of murder we want to all to be charged with murder at least 2nd degree murder intentional because when
9:15 pm
you sit there and you have down on a man's neck for 10 minutes you know and they're screaming and tell you that they can't breathe you know what i mean. you know your antics of the killer this mean you know people don't know they both were you know. big floyd was a bouncer at a same place where this guy was doing security at and they know each other well you know this guy this is like his 3rd 2nd or 3rd homicide as a police officer as a police officer you know we want the right charges to be you know present. we're not going to stop. this is not going to stop you know you can you can implement all these curfew rules this martial all were fed up this is and it has been well over 6 years and years and years of anger behind the senseless deaths you know we've been getting murdered in cold blood by the people they're supposed to protect us. you know what i mean. it's not it's not going to it's not going to end
9:16 pm
well here. in his latest speech us president donald trump slammed the riots on protesters while hinting that the unrest will end very soon. the mobs are devastating the life's work of good people and destroying their dreams right now america needs creation not destruction cooperation not contempt security not anarchy and there will be no anarchy my administration will stop mob violence. and will stop it cold police violence against america's black community has long fueled calls for reform and yet the country still sees a significant number of deadly incidents we spoke with educator and activist tookie wright who is and to died after an incident involving the police. usually there's no outcome that includes justice we're dealing with the fact that our skin has
9:17 pm
a certain tone that people treat you differently and it doesn't matter if you are walking your dog in central park and you're a harvard graduate or if you live in boise idaho and you are you know whatever your background is as long as you are in the skin you know some people call it that the skin that you're in is the sin and so you're treated as less equal you're treated as equal and so imagine being a large black man being the strong physically strong looking black man you automatically being approached with. with with violence as a 1st resort and it's just an ongoing pattern of abuse the amount of pressure that black people go through every day you know people would be a jumping off a bridge every day if they had to live in the skin that we live in. but what has to happen is that police officers need to be held accountable for their actions they
9:18 pm
need to be and other police officers when they see wrongdoing need to actually speak up and say something is wrong there's something called a thimble a lot of you know this code of silence that happens where police officers are not speaking up and in this case we see a lot of police officers in other cities speaking up but we really need to see minneapolis and st paul police officers speak up and say that this is wrong because anybody with any kind of sense can look at that video and see that that is a murder. lee merritt the civil rights attorney representing george floyd's a family described to us a longstanding pattern of police brutality against ethnic minorities in the u.s. . america's the deadliest police culture in the modern world there is no nation on the planet that kills in a car so it's more of his people we are in a crisis position tony ben crump and i announced this morning that we are taking these families the family of george floyd a model be on a tailor to washington d.c.
9:19 pm
and we want to discuss comprehensive police reform we're all spirit bringing this case before the united nations human rights council so that we can receive sanctions against the united states for its provisions and continual denial of basic human rights to the african-american community. which right now are met our primary goal is to show to ensure that the appropriate charges move forward and so we are not satisfied yet 3rd degree murder is an appropriate charge that means it was an accidental killing like manslaughter the the the partner charge they they levied if i get in my car again i get drunk i don't intend to kill anybody but it's reckless behavior that could result in somebody's death that's manslaughter this 3rd degree murder but when i apply pressure for sustained period of time to a critical area of someone's throat. that's and it's all about foreseeability it's foreseeable that that kind of action will result in death or bodily injury so that's murder we're looking forward to speaking with the governor on behalf of the
9:20 pm
the family and encouraging him to activate the attorney general keith ellis to come in take over this in this case bring the appropriate charges and make the requisite arrest. when the family is very concerned about the safety of the public these people are standing up not only for george they're standing up for themselves is standing up for the community but they're doing so by standing up against begin one of the most brutal police forces on the planet and i don't mean minnesota i mean the american police force in general they only know 2 things incarceration and brutality and so they are concerned that when. interlopers come and break things and bird things that invites harm to other people's children they don't want to see that happen. i'm now joined live from minneapolis by a local reporter down to henderson who has been following events for us there on the ground 1st of all. thank you for being with us and make sure that you stay safe because as you are very well aware situation there is quite volatile and harrowing
9:21 pm
images what is the response right now. is it going to be required to get people back off the streets and bring an end to these protests and riots. what's going on here now 1st of all the everyone would also be alert that. the military are now out in the curfew is. live here all day basically they want the dulces arrested and they don't want this to happen anymore to black people. to confess. i understand and so right now it seems like it's not very volatile but you can hear some screaming can hear some noise can you explain to me what's happening around you 'd. so what i'm at right now was actually a peaceful protesters like the music event and food and dancing and is a good time to celebrate like right when i got closely to cause percy time started
9:22 pm
to spread out and now you have more of the people who are waiting out to see what. so the 8 o'clock the curfew is in effect at this point in time is it expected people are planning to stay out in the streets and protest more or are they for lack of a better word fearing the national guard as they are preparing to come in. so the people these people who are where i'm this is a peaceful protest these people have no fear of the national guard they want to be able to stay out here pretty much say their chance and give their opinion but there are others who will do things they shouldn't be doing around the sign but those aren't really minneapolis people moving here 1st then there are people from different states coming in is taking old. you from your experience on the ground. sense that there's a difference between the peaceful protesters and what some people are calling the rioters or the revolutionists. or some of even call them opportunists what is the
9:23 pm
difference in mood between those 2 groups. well as everything to move would be rationally there's a legit people who want peace who want to. hear the coming of this will actually want a different they want change they're just speaking their mind that celebrities are talking to them to do the right things and there are others who are going in and they're causing damage but it's not exactly one minority group it's multiple minority groups of other races or get involved with this the more dangerous side of the protests. now in terms of minneapolis you are on the ground at basically the epicenter of this entire incident this is where george floyd was killed where the incident took place on monday now there have been protests all across the country and unrest all ican cross the country what is the feeling there from people on the
9:24 pm
ground who you speak to. about how they feel about it spreading to a national level. there's a sense of pride that their voice is now being heard it started here in minneapolis you don't hear too much about it but if i were making. it starting something on a positive. danger this and things that are part of it but it's like my voice is finally being heard and to see other people in other states agreeing with it's a view to hold things you don't want to see the destruction you don't want to see the best of the violence what you want your voice to be heard in your mind in the early when things start to change the no one no body no president no citizen once all of the damage. now what we are hearing from the ground is that there are some chance with some expletives i can't say them on air about. not wanting to abide by the curfew we do know that the curfew is in place we do know as you reported earlier that
9:25 pm
a message in all alert went out to citizens in the city in the state that perfume is in place. and the minnesota department of public safety has used increasingly aggressive language to trying to scourge people from demonstrating warning that the police force will be tripling in size and that authorities are preparing for a quote unquote sophisticated network of urban warfare are you seeing that level of police presence presence increase is the police are the police there on the ground now a larger force and they have been in the past. i honestly know i've acted in every ride. you guys are seeing live on in there and the police isn't as big as the media. last night and once the guard came out for this i think but other than that it's not as big as a trade on some of the. very interesting to hear your thoughts and your firsthand
9:26 pm
experience very important please stay safe down to we want to make sure that you don't get caught up in the violence as well minneapolis local reporter down to henderson thanks for being with us here on our to international. thank you so much . another governor of minnesota has urged the public to stay home amid the unrest saying it's the only option to avoid chaos. i just i am bringing out everyone who's voice in community is so much stronger than mine i'm bringing out lived experiences to tell people it is going to be incredibly dangerous we have trained professionals out there but the people that are there don't wear uniforms don't play by rules and don't share a values they will intentionally create chaos we will do our very best to preserve ignaty rule of law but we have got to clear our streets we cannot show up patients or people who care nothing about anything earlier we spoke to an activist
9:27 pm
from minneapolis who said the protest aims to speak out to washington d.c. decision makers i hope that we cannot get some justice i hope that we can talk to congress and i'm so glad that the melon numbers of people have come out to join us in this fight because i want to talk to the young i want to go forward with people that are higher up and what i'm hoping for is for something to change in the police force something to change in this city and in this world because if we say that. you know melanin dominant people are not strategically. systematically held under the repeat line so i'm hoping that we can go to the people hire an hour and something after that's what i hope. and just a recap of what has been going on around the united states right now multiple cities in the country are seeing different violent protests over the death of george floyd in police custody over the last few days buildings have been set on
9:28 pm
fire businesses looted with protesters denouncing racism and police brutality amid clashes with law enforcement all happening at the same time. thank you. thank you. thank. god we've got people that we've got to call. george boyd with playing on the ground all those other officers watched by.
9:29 pm
the governor of minnesota claims some of the violence is no longer about george floyd on this video you can see a man trying to burn the american flag in los angeles while in atlanta news outlets cnn's office was attacked by rioters. you are not in the newsroom this is you know project you know chris work out some people are laughing some people are videotaping it or something on fire chris a firecracker. fire. you are right. a big crowd gathered outside the building to condemn the channel's coverage of the current events there was a high police presence in the area ok scale map and looks now at how the coverage compares with a protest in baltimore some years back. shocking murder the protesters breaking windows torching buildings and clashing with police thousands of taking to the
9:30 pm
streets to protest against the recent killing of george boyd but the protests have spread far beyond minnesota all across the country clashes are taking place across american streets. like i. could. cook you. could cook clean. cook. i. i minnesota's governor tim waltz has declared a state of emergency i am answering our local leaders request for minnesota national guard assistance to protect peaceful demonstrators.
