now a study actually suggested. the long term effects may not just be the absence of benefit but actually very bright because of the long term. america rages for another night with more looting arson and police protester violence in the wake of george floyd's death in custody. curfews have been imposed in almost 30 u.s. cities though that didn't stop the rioters wreaking destruction with more business isn't shoppers vandalized. guns calls for new york city's mayor to resign after he defends police officers who drove their s.u.v.s into a crowd of demonstrators. a
2:01 pm
warm welcome you're watching r t international with me. now another night of violence on cities that ablaze amid protests sparked by the death of george floyd at the hands of police 1700 people have been arrested across the u.s. in minneapolis where floyd died police have been struggling to maintain the curfew there with officers resorting to ever more heavy handed methods.
2:02 pm
following several months of protests in minneapolis that at times descended into vandalism and also and on sunday volunteers armed with brooms and been back survive to help clear up the mess they helped remove the child's remains of buildings that had earlier listen to the night sky orange some of them shared their thoughts about what's been happening in their city. they think it's really important right now as we look at this area completely decimated. by so many different emotions it's so important to come together as a community and to start putting it together in some way shape or form but we're out here there's a lot of positivity there's people cleaning the streets the churches untouched everybody's coming together we're all just here for each other in the end of the day you know we're not fighting each other killing each other or anything like that
2:03 pm
we're out here this cleaning up as much as we can we're right out in front of the post office that's just trying to do anything that we can so yeah just some support if you leave i don't know if i've ever seen we'll leave the city be united around something like this even when it feels like. you know you did all a makeshift memorial has been set up at the place where george floyd died mourners come here to pay their respects leaving flowers and messages the site has also become a place of peaceful protest against police brutality contrasting with the anger that has. dave in other parts of the city so obvious williams who says he were to a nightclub in minneapolis when both george floyd and the police officer shot off the chance to have his death well as well said his reaction with us to what's happened. i knew both of them pretty well i work with floyd is where we all knew him by. i was there work in the club the day his 1st day coming in back in 2015 something like that yeah when he 1st came in he was there i was there security
2:04 pm
i wasn't aware was employment was hiring but the moment i saw him i knew i needed that guy on the floor rose genuine. what i mean that this guy would give you the shirt off in fact it was such a nice. game for being such a big star he was truly in touch i was so derrick so even oh say you also worked with him in a nightclub tell us more about him. and let's be clear about this that people together it's close because it's not like you working shoulder to shoulder. as you sit in the squad cars are side building at the time you don't even know what's in those cars they show up they stay outside they don't come in they don't exist ok. to. come out so we don't really. think you're. employed by the same people ok
2:05 pm
so their job and relationship before it was sure was at a club that was. going to. work the day also be clear that i do you think that she even recognized floyd's touring they arrest her it's possible that maybe. they did die in that moment because you know if i get my sister recognized you in my business security. usually to do some insight with their officers some type of time in level with the officer they usually know it's situation so you can over for speeding you know enough signatures what with the use that you know. so knowing officer will usually help you now are you always good so i do not believe that there was any previous matches between these 2 and i would like to clear that up but i do not believe so knowing both of these men how
2:06 pm
did you feel what was your reaction when you 1st saw the video. i was horrified i mean come on i mean come on that was me on every level. it was i was horrified. i moved off was quite aware of this scene really i just didn't understand. why i was doing this i never knew he was to people of course something like that so i was actually shocked and horrified then i was waged and sat in all the acting you know. just. a concrete wall has been built around the minneapolis police department's 1st precinct station as a defense against protesters with metal barriers also blocking off the streets. we
2:07 pm
had some days baking in minneapolis he's a member of communities united against police brutality and says warnings about a lack of discipline among officers have been falling on deaf ears. there is only hope that protests like this continue and people demand that change because pete had a history of minneapolis and where of an after another of these police murders and each time they're called that there's going to be change that we're going to listen to the community that we're going to make that's or other policy change and each time it's been absolutely empty promises as soon as the t.v. cameras go away the echo right back to where where they were our organization has recommended many many changes over the years it's virtually impossible to get the city council of the mayor or the police to pay any attention to those and do what it's necessary to stop that's kind of violence to be appointed out over the years
2:08 pm
how virtually no officers are disciplined in minneapolis and no one in the city council wants to hear that no one wants to do that we have statistics we have all documented research and they just continue and succeed in practice album mistreat. curfews have been imposed in 28 cities across the us meaning people are prohibited from being outside off the a.p.m. but that didn't stop the riots is reportedly 75 cities still protests spill into the streets national guards are being called in at least 10 states may want in new york city alone 30 officers have been injured in clashes with 350 people arrested.
2:09 pm
2:10 pm
a series of speeches given by the local activists regarding the situation with the police violence and racism in the united states as the day progressed things started to get increasingly more and more violent we saw various crime issues between police and demonstrators and at the end of all of that. has made a statement new york has 2 and violent protests if you went out peacefully to make a point about the need for change you have been heard and change is coming in the city i have no doubt about that it's time to go home so we can all move forward but those who are out there simply to create violence those who are out there to express hatred towards our police officers we won't tolerate that if you're out there to commit an act of violence you're going to get arrested the bless you know
2:11 pm
when to defend the police officers who maliciously rammed the s.u.v. . into lines of protest and he said you know that these protesters should have just got out of the way but the thing about motor cars i mean they're really quite remarkable invention they can actually move backwards as well as forwards so i mean that's a fact that's perhaps maybe lost on the man and this outrage and outrage response from representative alexandra castor cortez who wins on to criticize the mast saying that defending and making excuses for the n.y.p.d. running s.u.v.s into crowds was wrong violent protests also then went on all around the country as they have now for days in a row despite curfews resource of a long rest breaking out yet again in countries in cities with curfew such as los angeles philadelphia. cincinnati portland oregon and louisville. kentucky protests
2:12 pm
also flared up in dallas chicago seattle salt lake city where a an individual actually pulled up on demonstrators and attempted to fire on them with a long bow of all things before he was tackled to the ground by demonstrators as well as cleveland's we've also seen violent scenes in las vegas where police and protesters clashed along the main strip there were several very sort of violent scenes there along what is one of one of america's most iconic capitalist telescopes and there has been much made about. by the establishment in this country of the i suppose it's outside elements being what is to blame here is not the fact that the police have a large number of races murders amongst them is the fact that people are upset and it's outside elements which of course and it's apparently there's a lot of hype being made about. the sort of radicals oppose the radical left brain behind this i saw members of very socialist groups intervene to actually protect
2:13 pm
police officers when they became isolated from. members of the police force so this directly contradicts what is being said regardless of this donald trump the president here has just recently tweeted saying that the united states is going to designate and chief as a terrorist organization and trump is very much in favor of the national guard deployed and an increase in the militarization of the response to these protests the national guard has been released to minneapolis to do the job that the democrats could do should have been used 2 days ago and they would not have been damaged employees had cooties would not have been taken over and ruined a great job by the national guard no games as we have seen pretty desperate state of affairs over here in the states and it looks as if this violence is going to continue to have to take an exit. aeration that obviously the officer in question
2:14 pm
here with the killing of. floyd was has been arrested and charged with 3rd degree murder and manslaughter however certainly one thing the protestant protesters are saying where i was yesterday was that it was a manslaughter this was clearly a murder if you need on someone's necks and 9 minutes that's that's direct that's direct murder so i doubt that we'll be seeing any subsiding of violence certainly seems that curfews if anything are actually encouraging violence to spread more so it remains to be seen what happens next and the u.s. president's residence in washington d.c. hasn't escaped the on the rest either protesters have been gathering outside for 2 days and clashed with secret service agents. ok.
2:15 pm
the police have been around for 2 months all they do is corruption is corruption on top of corrections of oppression they cause more problems and they help. us about taxpayers' dollars we are paying them our money to protect us this is what this is a man at the end of the day here for protection. 7 for to discuss the situation we can cross live to activist yvonne occasionally in florida now if on thank you for joining us on the program and tell us that how people been protesting in florida. yes hello there have been major protests in tampa where i'm based and there was
2:16 pm
a presence in miami florida and jacksonville and a large turnout yesterday and i think they're going to continue on today as well how would you assess the police response to the protest. while miami in particular in my personal experience in the free trade riots back in 2003 the military has it seems as if the military has trained and are the police there's kind of this there isn't a line between the 2 there were tanks in tampa last night. so you think of a police officer is somebody that's working for the community protecting and serving with the big time the teaser but last night there were tanks out in full force in in tampa and in miami. so that that's quite scary to see here in america i would think
2:17 pm
a lot of what started out as peaceful protests defending to violence we've seen looting we've seen often do you think this is the right way to get your message across. i mean it's a really complex question to answer in my personal opinion especially because i am . a white woman to be quite honest it's not really my say in the matter i did witness looting happening yesterday during the day in broad daylight and it was the 1st time i've ever witnessed looting happening at a protest in the 19 years that i've been attending protests and documented protests but there's there's no way to control millions of people across the country and have wind uniformed way to behave when you are defending your life at the end of the day these protestors are literally begging for their lives and there's you can't control and tell people how to behave in that kind of situation it's their
2:18 pm
survival instincts and if somebody is going to go off and and want to be a rebel and cause a little destruction you know it's i mean i'm not defending that but at the same time it's really really hard to pass judgement unless you yourself are literally walking in their shoes and i think that as a white woman i don't personally believe that i have the right to judge anybody. that is that is involved in this movement and how they're behaving absolutely do you think there's a possibility though are chunks that these peaceful protests that being hijacked by opportunists. yes when i 100 percent at the end of the day these protests are starting as rallies in public parks with children and parents and families of all of all ages and it's an open community of people who have lived through the civil rights movement people who who want to see change who are
2:19 pm
desperate for change and they start peaceful they start with prayer they start with reading the names of the people who've been murdered and by the by the police and armed innocent people and then after the rally they go off and they march and when people start marching in taking over the streets which is very liberating and very empowering to take the streets and take a stand on it can get very chaotic and you can cause traffic and you can cause people to get angry and and that's when it gets very chaotic and that's when 7 there's a couple people in the crowd that went to be an instigator and when i write this yesterday in tampa florida i was and as i've witnessed protests across the country . it's always a few people who want to kind of cause a little chaos and and then it kind of escalates and yeah so.
2:20 pm
it all comes as such an intense time for the u.s. doesn't it because you could be a country gripped by the pandemic because well when people should be observing social distancing today not an afterthought now. well in it's really a bizarre situation that we've had in america because our president started this pandemic by claiming that it was potentially a d.n.c. hoax so he kind of started this whole thing off by acting as if it wasn't a serious situation we're getting a lot of mixed signals from our government i've taken it very seriously there's been 100000 reported deaths in america in the past several months so we're obviously we've all been taking it very seriously but apparently we've flattened the curve and so do our businesses are slowly starting to open up it's it's a crazy time to be out and protesting in mobs of people during
2:21 pm
a global pandemic but at the end of the day you know we were all wearing masks and we felt the call to stand up and and stand with our brothers and sisters in solidarity in and in many ways it's you know you're putting we're putting our life on the line to make a stand how our voices heard. you know going in standing in front of police riot police with with rubber bullets and and tanks and tear gas maids. were were already putting our lives essentially on the line so it's a very complex time it's a scary time. there's a lot of thought that maybe this is kind of orchestrated in some manner i know that goes off into some conspiracy realms and i don't want to go there. now they're going to now the governments and you know we have a core and teen and curfews and now the national guard is out and that was what our
2:22 pm
fears were in the beginning of the quarantine so. like an opportunistic time to take advantage of citizens and how this on curfew and with military presence and great fear for americans for a long time in my personal experience as of course and you know not to observing the curfew you are taking a risk and also putting yourself in these protests with the heavy handed and sometimes heavy handed police presence you're putting yourself in harm's way is it worth it are you going to continue protesting i think it's absolutely worth it at the end of the day. i personally believe that it's at least that i can do as as as a white woman. i will never have to walk the streets living in fear of getting murdered by the police in broad daylight for for being just a suspect and in any kind of random potential crime. i think it's the least
2:23 pm
that white citizens can do to participate and stand with our brothers and sisters who live in fear every single day i personally believe that it's worth it. for some reason that the pandemic is was an afterthought and you're really just kind of making you realize that now i think watching the video of george floyd if you did in the murder of george floyd if it didn't. spark any kind of empathy and wanting to be involved in stand with our brothers and sisters i mean. the officer sat on him for 7 minutes and then he passed and then he died he became lifeless and then that officer stayed on him for another minute. you know what he was doing you could see it in his eyes the officer. knew that he was being recorded george was begging for his life. he was crying scenes use dying that he couldn't
2:24 pm
breathe and the officer you could see it in his eyes that officer knew exactly what he was doing we can't keep allowing horrific deaths like that to happen time and time and time again and and just let it go and not do anything about it. activists from florida thank you for joining us on the program we appreciate it. thank you very much. across also to the streets in los angeles on sunday as protests turned violent people explained why they were out. the. the.
2:25 pm
problem is. the chronos taking pictures is trying to get journalism what's happening here and we're shooting off for a couple of kids and people are going to it's also important it's appalling. i'm so tired i'm tired. of one of ours and it was at the height of a lot of. respect to clyde pickett an activist from minneapolis now he says people are risking their lives to get the message across there are a great number of people who are here to protest peacefully what change for here she didn't and if you are guilty and want to be a part of who solution here in the streets demanding justice because you want to
2:26 pm
long they will have not had it. what i want is a great deal where the people where they are for the right reason who are demanding accountability and who stand together in unity. in the strangest of all the unaddressed that's happened there is a tremendous spirit of connectedness a tremendous spirit of unity people are risking their lives to be a part of the protest a lot of the cleanup because they see the need for great action part of the reason folks are there is because they want to make a change in the face of fighting for her our humanity as it relates to this pandemic we are fighting for the humanity of other people so the people are there for a reason and the people are there to demand change. protests have spread beyond the u.s. border with people gathering in trafalgar square in london the crowd then set off on the march policy houses of parliament and on saturday there was another protest
2:27 pm
in berlin where a crowd gathered outside the u.s. embassy chanting slogans and holding signs with the phrase black lives matter. and atlanta hundreds of people gathered outside cnn's office to condemn the channel's coverage of the current events but logo of the company has been vandalized. the. the. c.n.n.'s headquarters had already been attacked earlier this week as the protest over the killing of george lloyd's turned violent demonstrators smashed the windows and chanted slogans the time has also been facing criticism for apparently suggesting that foreign actors had a hand in stirring up the riots. here out c.n.n. that russia might be behind the some of the rioting and. the acts of violence and
2:28 pm
destruction and i. i don't know that our goals of our sailors russia's fault are the same also the peaceful folks and say are my community members these are the folks that live here and now we're going to where are you demanding change it seems more. i want to see inside job but i would say not necessarily people in the community are destroying things or organizing the rights of all it's kind of. the fear of the people on the outside minnesota the closer states like michigan and stuff like that a lot of the kids who are arrested last night were actually. from wisconsin and other states around here i don't think that's possible because the people i see rioting they're not russian they are there are 41 of them. arkan's you know we're. just people who choose to stand on the wrong side and i believe that they come in to cause confusion and chaos so that they can make the protesters look like they're
2:29 pm
bad people and we don't have a cause but what it really comes down to is when you look at that video of george floyd saying i can't breathe i mean you're not human if you can't look at that and see that's wrong it doesn't matter for to police one another ma'am but this keeps happening over and over again and this culture has got to stop c.n.n. likes to make a lot of stuff up i really don't think the russians would be down here doing all this it's mainly the writers and they're completely different groups from the protesters but you know everybody loves a conspiracy is meanwhile c.n.n. has published an apparent response to the criticism saying you know it's every bad act on social media is personally personally set by russian president vladimir putin. we've got plenty more live coverage coming up for you in the coming hours including plenty of interviews as well do stay with us we're back in 30 minutes.
