hello there i'm an electron you're watching in question broadcasting from our to america's national news headquarters in washington d.c. we want to welcome our viewers from across the nation and all around the world here are today's top stories but 1st the tear gas and dust have all settled here in washington but the nation's capital still reeling from monday's military force just outside of the white house and today president trump's strong man stands still unchanged and we're going to speak with a rock legend roger waters about the global on the rest over the killing of george floyd plus rick sanchez joins in to discuss how officers went from being
3:01 pm
a friendly part of the community morphing into a militarized police you see today all right it's time to boost your news i. less than 24 hours after protesters were met with tear gas outside of the white house today president trump continues his push for tougher law enforcement against massive protest still happening across the nation those protests as a result of last week's death of george floyd an unarmed black man killed by a minneapolis police officer now for more on the new developments coming out of washington let's go to our to scare and fronsac who's standing by outside of the white house what's the latest. for it's a middle of we are right in front of the st john's church where yesterday there was that controversial photo op that donald trump president on the trump took yesterday but before we get to that we have an update now we have the protesters about to move over. to more of the left side outside of the white house because there has
3:02 pm
been a national guard presence more over in the corner now lafayette park which is directly in front of the white house actually has now been taken over by federal authorities and it was just announced that arlington county actually pulled their officers actually from patrols who were actually here helping federal state and local police so the spokesman for arlington county said that they were not happy with having to use tear gas and flash bangs to move the crowds back monday as donald trump made his way to st john's church to take a picture here or as browsers said that they actually never called them in for help so she doesn't know why they were here in a for is in the 1st place an update on that but yesterday when we were here with the protesters we had young and old black and white all together protesting peacefully but once that perfect hit at 7 pm that's when things started to turn a little bit violent the crowds were pushed back again as i mentioned so president trump could take that photo op and that's exactly exactly what his critics are calling it a religious photo op in front of the 200 year old st john's church where we are the
3:03 pm
day after it was set on fire protesters now before his photo op trump spoke in the rose garden condemning the rioting and looting that's in cities across the country that they've seen and threaten that he would actually deploy the u.s. military to major cities if it didn't stop with that here i am you know president of law and order and an ally of peaceful protesters. but in recent days our nation has been gripped by professional anarchies violent mobs are students looters criminals rioters. and. now overnight protesters took to the streets in washington with all things dying down around 2 or 3 in the morning stores and businesses they were broken into and you saw roughly the same amount of violence that was displayed sunday night but as each day goes on here in d.c. more and more businesses are beginning to board up their windows almost making it look like the city is getting ready for a hurricane now just moments ago the president 1st lady they were actually at the
3:04 pm
national shrine here in d.c. where they laid a ceremonial ceremonial wreath to mark the 100th anniversary of saint john paul 2 birth now while the president and the 1st lady they then went back to the white house where he started executive order to advance international religious freedom now that big controversial religious photo op yesterday here at st john's church we are now joined today by members of the catholic church catholic diocese on the can skip aliens who have priest rabbi all here actually moments before this broadcast they were all in a circle praying together saying that we need to unite so a lot of religious presence here today a catholic priest going through and sprinkling holy water on the protesters so we'll be monitoring that and seeing kind of how it all transfers from yesterday into today's protest and i'll have the latest for you at fair and balanced on instagram and twitter and also our dot com back to you back there thank you so much . all right if you use instagram like millions do you may have noticed a lot of black squares appearing in your feed it is called blackout tuesday and it
3:05 pm
was started by 2 female african-american record execs as a means to reflect on how the music industry has profited off of black artists now this is a part of the greater conversation of the ongoing black lives matter movement this time on the heels of the george floyd slaying so joining us to weigh in rock legend . roger waters of pink floyd roger thank you so much for being with us this the hash tag the music must be positive and black out tuesday are associated with this music industry movement being a veteran of this industry in the greater context of a black lives matter how do you view the industry's profits from black artists. well obviously if they're in the senate maybe from that we've been watching pictures of the president of the united states holding up his bible class that priests sprinkling holy water on protests so there's some there's
3:06 pm
a lot going home which has nothing to do with what you're talking about and i think what you're told is maybe a ritual. in fact it is entirely peripheral to the conversations that are going on now in the united states i have very very little to say except that obviously. trump is trying with the whole holding up the bible thing to reinforce the idea that he wants to sit the wall between the white supremacists christian rights and anybody who had to stand up with a baseball bat and say no well the only thing i have to say today. to all my friends out there who is so desperately angry about george floyd and oleo the young and old people who've been murdered by the shoes police forces in
3:07 pm
the nazi states of america is be leaves the baseball. you are damaging you cause beyond all belief anybody who breaks a window with a spiral in any way is absolute you might just as well be going around to putting anything that you've got into donald trump's caucus that is what he wants you to do we are on a it's very cheap that meets a 750 k. but we have to remember muhammad gunn the one we have to remember how. important nonviolent protest is and or so how effective ways and how effective it was in the civil rights movement 6. you colonel floyd you know. very outgoing you know that leo. and the checkmate. me i'm writing which is will cheat me. well
3:08 pm
roger i believe you currently reside in new york right in and there it's been a scene of a great deal of looting and rioting like you're discussing here we saw similar protests in new york city just a few years ago wrangling the killing of eric garner by a plainclothes police officer and why put and why p.t. officer his was what sparked the i can't breathe montra that was eric garner of course but those protests didn't seem to be as violent or as hostile is there a fine line between this sort of civil disobedience and the chaos that we're seeing now does the message get lost. you know i think it's happening now and this is maybe one of the results of covert 19 at the pandemic is that somebody pointed to in fact my mrs pointed this out me the other day she said to me oh i was going on about 100 people taking to the streets and protesting about that and the inequality
3:09 pm
in america and sights and sounds of the police and bubble up up up up up up and everything else though the people we the people should every day be rising up and well the difference now is that we've been locked down and that there's nothing much going on and the people aren't being allowed to go to work so so this and so there is a lot more kind of that finally there's an opportunity where there's these few kind of days so moments when they really maybe some of them have not a lot else to do but the agri these people are angry and so they should be i don't know really what else to say except that do not be sucked into donald trump's dumond's for an i meet cool on battle between you and him and the forces of evil because it's a battle you come when we have to do this in a peaceful nonviolent way and that is the way forward in my career right arm up
3:10 pm
to come back to your question by the way about but rives maps and square and the things you know about rob's match have come out and said don't do that in the name lady up you know i'm sorry if i've got her name but she's come out and said that we don't want black squares what we want is take your video camera with you everywhere . this is you when you don't want to baseball that you want your video camera take it with you to not resist but make sure that you film everything because it is getting through on social media ok we'll show the pictures of those. unary swore them but those young men in uniform running people down in their s.u.v.s callously you know this is what they've been trained this is what they live for they've been waiting all their lives to beat people in the street and be
3:11 pm
sanctioned their president by the government and so on don't give them a call it's all right it's with us yeah you have to protest. you have no no worries he you have long been a civil rights an antiwar activist you are also a celebrity in recent recent years we have seen more and more celebrities taking to social media for various social causes do you think that helps or does it hurt the message doesn't get lost. now of course it helps you know susan sarandon who's been vilified all over everywhere for almost everything she ever says to anyone anywhere is a wonderful actress but she's also a wonderful human being who cares deeply about brothers and sisters not just in the united states but all over the world and it's not and is solidly support if a black lives matter in the palestinian cause and the row and ins and the power and
3:12 pm
the blower on the blower and the blogs so so no of course i would encourage anybody who has any platform a tool to speak up the greatest sin of all. is to remain is to stand by silent and didn't different what we're not indifferent to we will not be sideline because we're living in very very difficult times and this is scary this this looks like the weimar republic in the early 1930 s. in chip money and it would be so easy for that be a great research and of a fascist right wing in this country with armed militias who think they're superior to everyone and everyone else in the world just as many germans would talk to think in the statutes that they were superior they were a most a race and in consequence. they had the keys to rule the world in that they showed
3:13 pm
that it was kind of moral duty but you're not a must raise donald trump and neither of the people who follow you know we saw that in charlottesville ok and we saw a response to it no resistance to it quite rightly in fact some of the women who were in charlottesville protesting against dot fascist rightly were from standing walk where the look to people made a stand against the forces of the corporate state and was shoveled off with an executive order from the guy in the white house but nevertheless that spirit lives on and they are still there and we will follow them to our dying breath and they were in charlottesville as well when they run that when they ran them down some are so old now white supremacy ran them down in a you know in a car yeah it's you know they don't think we're going anywhere it seems and i think it seems increasingly that the voice of the people are slowly becoming more and more unified here roger waters i'm unfortunately out of time but i appreciate you
3:14 pm
weighing in and sharing your perspective with us on this a very important social and civil matter thank you so much. thank you very much for having me on. and in st louis missouri 4 police officers were hit by gunfire after a peaceful protest quickly turned violent monday the police department says the officers were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries and are expected to recover it's still unclear who fired those shots. are rick sanchez is joining us to discuss how officers went from being a friendly part of the community to military militarized police that you're seeing today we're going to talk about that and the later in the sports a few regina hamm brings us some good news about the start of formula one season will be right back.
3:15 pm

gesture. welcome to my world come along for the ride. the days of your local police officer casually strolling his or her beat the neighborhood kids waving as they passed by those are long gone today police officers are looking more and more like military special operators thanks to president bill clinton's $997.00 n.d.a. which requires the d.o.t. to make various pre-owned equipment available to local police departments so since then there have been over $5000000000.00 worth of military equipment transferred to your local police departments so here to walk us through how this all happened and host of news with rick sanchez our friend rick sanchez who has had
3:18 pm
a long history of covering this beat as a field reporter rick what do you got to tell us. cut my teeth as a cop beat reporter and it's interesting how we got here we got here because we've allowed ourselves as a country to become a police state and in the process we've over militarized ourselves and this is not something we can put on the back of donald trump obviously he's trying to own this thing right now i'm glad you mentioned bill clinton but you might as well mention almost every elected official in the united states of america there was a time if you were growing up in america and you were a kid you probably had a mentor may have been a teacher may have been someone to your local park you would go to the park and a mr andrews or mrs harris is somebody you would get to know and they would teach you how to play basketball or how to play football and maybe they'd have neighborhood teams that played against other teams that's gone doesn't exist in america anymore the reason that doesn't exist in america anymore is because
3:19 pm
american politicians whether they're mayors or councilmen or senators or local officials or state officials or federal officials. cannot get elected unless they say in their stump speech i will give you 10 more police officers for your city the next one i will give you 15 more police officers for your city the next one i will give you 20 more police officers and i'm going to give them bigger guns and i'm going to give them more cars and after awhile the budgets the municipal budgets in america that we used to have for creating those programs for kids the mentor's go to the park anybody who's listening right now to the sound of my voice go to a park anywhere in america right now you know we're going to find you to find sprinklers some guy doing maintenance moe in the lawn and they'll tell you to get off the park even if you go there to play catch with your kid because instead they rent them out to outside organizations to come in and play soccer and stuff the
3:20 pm
days of when young children in america had people who helped them not become criminals have given way to a society where we almost encourage them to become criminals so then we can arrest them because after we arrest them we create another job not only do we have now more cops but now we can hire correctional officers the number of correctional officers the number of cops in america continues to go up and you know it's interesting you almost can't even put this on cops i know it's an easy week to feel horrible about police officers and be very critical of them but we've put those people in that situation right we've we've told them all we want you to do is go out there and arrest people look my brother is a cop and he's a good guy i guarantee you if you took my brother chalk and most police officers out there and say you know what 2 days a week we're going to take away your badge and your gun and we're going to give you a whistle in a coaches have and we're going to put you in
3:21 pm
a park somewhere in the inner city so you get along with these kids teach them how to play football teach them about life. damn it we don't do that anymore america has turned into a militarization zone a police state and we've done it with each politician who we voted for who decided to take them into school budgets all over the world all over our country and shrink them down to almost nothing so they can create more space for more guns and more cops and more cop cars and now you have police officers as you mentioned in the lead who aren't only police officers they dress and act like soldiers why in the hell in the united states of america are our police officers wearing camouflage around us and in an army uniforms as if we were the enemy and that's a big part of the problem this we're the enemy and they're the authority that's how we got where we are and it's been a slow and arduous process i've seen it in my lifetime from being
3:22 pm
a recreation leader and a cop beat reporter and i'm saddened by it. yeah i mean growing up in the eighty's the cops you know really did walk by my neighborhood on foot hence the name flatfoot right. do you remember officer friendly every school had an officer would come. talk to us and we got to know them and they want to be yeah but then we started to get away from walking the beat and we started getting them cars and then we got of s.u.v.s and then yes we got him you know tractors and before you know what they had cars that look like military vehicles and now their windows are closed but i am around in the only time they write yes and every conversation is a confrontation rather than the right kind of are saying that is probably wouldn't even do it when. we know this you know this most americans know this and nobody's talking about this and this is what we need to get back to this is how we can
