5:00 pm
well you throw. this. switch your thirst for. hello there i'm a military man you're watching in question broadcasting from r t america's national news headquarters in washington d.c. we want to welcome our viewers from across the nation and all around the world our top story america in chaos. we are following the developing story out of minnesota that is where the state attorney general keep ellison is upping the charges against the now fired minneapolis police officer derek chauvin now to 2nd degree murder in the death of
5:01 pm
george floyd and also charging the 3 other officers involved with aiding and abetting chauvin is currently in police custody and now we're learning at least one of the other officers and for reaction on the ground in minneapolis we will turn to ashley banks and we'd like to warn you some of the footage you're about to see is extremely graphic. example lead attorney for the family of george clooney and spoke at the location the little florida under his last words i can't breathe as our officer derek should've been suffocated him by placing his knee on his back and neck cramps as all 3 officers were accomplices to murder saying quote we must have equal justice for the united states of america and change is going to come and i proclaim with his son as my witness that change starts today i've been here for 5 days and everyone i've spoken with in this city demand these officers be charged and if they aren't demonstrators say a great big. day for the city of minneapolis when i see people arguing about how
5:02 pm
this is just being bored and we need something to do and we're just these rioters who want to cause a ruckus a lot of people tend to forget that history tends to repeat itself this is something that is affected a lot of us very hears. hundreds of years from the trail of tears is slavery we have been seeing this for so long we are in 2020 right now. and the fact that. i'm still scared every day for my nephew should not be happening and this enough for me not going to happen is. cops police departments whatever where ever. psyche values on these cops and she what they've been through as a child i mean. to me it seems like they let people who have been bullied in high school by different. people in high school that are black and they just say here
5:03 pm
those are good that's what they do. a lot of people being killed in the state of minnesota. get me for this you know but i see people going to police stations and they have been locked in sales in the sale you know it's really been to minneapolis and st paul residents are fed up with 1st man and one chance just to be stared at this time minnesota department of human rights has filed a civil rights charge against the minneapolis police department to see if the department has participated in systemic discriminatory practices but relationship with dad and over the last 10 years being about this family and friends are preparing to go to the morial service for the lead in minneapolis at 1 pm central time and north central university actually banks reporting in minneapolis. right 10 days after the death of george floyd protests continue here at the nation's capital the boisterous crowds demanding an end to police brutality and earlier today
5:04 pm
defense secretary mark esper ordered active duty military troops stationed all across the streets of d.c. to return to their home base only moments ago to reverse that order artie's rachel blevins is live outside of the white house with more on this rachel what's happening on the ground now. but no as you can see i'm here outside of the white house surrounded by hundreds of protesters right here they 3 more of them why even just within the last hour and even. though we did learn the news today that all 4 officers who were fired for their role in the death of jordan lloyd would face charges it doesn't seem to change facts with the atmosphere here on the ground because even though protesters say it is a start they also say that this movement is about much more than just words for now as you can look behind me here we have crowds a crowd the protesters and on the other side of those protesters there is a line of armored police and military personnel now we've seen federal police we've seen military police and they have formed a very strong line with even more troops coming in adding to that line just within
5:05 pm
the last 10 minutes now defense secretary mark asked for did say initially today that he didn't want to see active duty troops on the ground targeting protesters but then he apparently reversed that decision according to latest reports that still something that is unfolding also on the ground here with in the last couple of hours we did see the mayor of d.c. murray who was on the ground talking the protesters and she has been very adamant about the fact that she doesn't always want to see police brutality against peaceful protests or she doesn't want to see sleaze firing tear gas or rubber bullets against those protesters but it is important to highlight the fact that over the last 24 hours the protests here in washington d.c. have been overwhelmingly peaceful and that's incredibly important because over the last 44 hours we've seen some of the largest protest yet take a look at look at what we saw earlier today. throughout protesters gathered by the hundreds in washington d.c.
5:06 pm
wednesday morning for a march to the capitol building demonstrators said their goal was to continue spreading their message despite the threat of an increased crackdown finally the protesters are marching to the capital right now here in washington d.c. and we're hearing calls like no justice no peace say his name george floyd is a higher name briana taylor and people that have gathered here want to emphasize the fact that this is a largely peaceful protest but at the same time they are still adamant. about bringing attention to those cases of police brutality the cases where americans have lost their lives at the hands of police yet in these cases as they have said there has been no justice and they say there will be no peace the protest was organized by the group freedom fighters d.c. and they repeatedly emphasize the fact that it was meant to bring awareness to a message that has been at the heart of these protests since the beginning organizers were seen handing out bottles of water mask and hand sanitizer and demonstrators included people of all races all ages and all backgrounds this
5:07 pm
protest comes one day after thousands were seen marching to the white house marking the largest gathering the city has seen since the protests began many of those protesters broke the 7 pm curfew implemented by the district but even then the demonstrations were largely peaceful and the clashes with police appeared to be minimal. and now the overwhelming message we have heard from these protesters and they want to be in charge and they want to speak just to pick a script we've tried to get people like me on a scalar and george boyd and they also want to see a change in the way the police have handled here in america that despite ongoing curfews and by the military as police that we have seen here on the ground these protesters say they're not going anywhere anytime they are reporting from outside the white house rachel. and today marks one week since protesters 1st marched through the streets of los angeles it was the 1st break off protest from minneapolis following the death of george floyd
5:08 pm
a los angeles county alone saw thousands of arrests made from these demonstrations here's artie's natasha suite now with the report. sentences of protesters were to the streets of los angeles more than 2700 arrests have been made since protesters began last wednesday the curfew was extended citywide for a fortnight to see the national guard having quite a presence throughout the city here you can see vehicles stationed outside the. famed dolby theater tuesday night the los angeles mayor eric are said he received a bit of backlash for even calling him a national guard over the weekend on saturday he said this is no longer a protest this is destruction this is vandalism but his tune changes as he takes in may to show solidarity with protesters at a police station tuesday later that evening demonstrators staged outside of course city's home police arrest 31 year old gregory wang dressed in similar tire to a national guard uniform carrying an assault rifle officials believe he had other
5:09 pm
weapons on hand but other protesters like johnson say he's out there to promote love was nothing nothing to. the multitude of our our team look something like that on the reeky obama now that's right we just wanted to come up in the backyard but i never have not really despite the droves of peaceful protesters looters throughout the city at various demonstrations causing chaos governor gavin newsom saying there is a big collaboration happening to monitor these extremist groups during the protests a lot of it's generated by the federal government lot of by the state and then a very well organized system that has existed for some time in the state i well we share that in real time with local law enforcement cities that were looted such as beverly hills in 1000 early curfews for wednesday officials saying they will be actively patrolling the streets reporting in los angeles the toughest weeks are to
5:10 pm
. and over now to new york city where after nights of looting and destruction comes some sense of peace but the protest over the death of george why do continue and so do the curfews here's artie's trinity chavez with that story there are off today a much different scene than previous days i don't preach violence like i preach politics after days of disturbing video and images of class. between police and demonstrators there were calls for calm throughout the city the people have looting videos taking a great opportunity to spread or are going to stop killing people and using that for a chaotic i think. if we can is a pastor long and. our our voice broke several peaceful protests taking place around the city tuesday hundreds paying their respects at a silent vigil in foley square some facing off with police with their hands up without incident this video capturing a touching moment between an officer and
5:11 pm
a demonstrator the right was no it was a truck was it was but as night fell the protesters once again defying curfew was. on the n.y.p.d. making 280 arrests and urging people to move on after dark her through her wall some of the rampant destruction and looting quelled tuesday night still some aggressive confrontations there grab innocent people for no reason i just started like a coffin and push them to the ground this door was a he's a journalist and a press has a press pass and they push him to the ground video capturing the moment an officer screams at a journalist. at one point a journalist said he was pinned to his car and forced to leave don't be like they were stuck in the past but despite similar cations new york city mayor bill de blasio calls it progress we saw
5:12 pm
a very very different picture around new york city last night we still have more work to do lumpy affirm that right up front mayor bill de blasio doubling down on the citywide curfew which will stay in place for the rest of the week however continues to reject urging from president trump and an offer from governor andrew cuomo to bring in the national guard reporting in new york trinity chavez r.t. . and similar protests have taken place in houston texas george boyd told state among the 60000 demonstrate. included some city officials and family calling on protesters to continue calling for an end to police brutality in kentucky there was a large turnout of mostly peaceful protesters many of them were actually dispersed though by tear gas and pepper balls by riot police. and over to st louis missouri a retired police captain was shot dead while responding to an alarm at a pawnshop late monday according to investigators the business was being looted at the time police say they made 25 arrests throughout that night after 55 other
5:13 pm
businesses were also looted retired captain david dorn was 77 years old. i want to give you a warning here some graphic footage you're looking at in new south wales australia the police chief outright rejected comparisons to the united states after an indigenous boy was roughed up while being arrested this past sunday you can see in the video there how the officer turned him around and kicks both of his legs causing the teen to fall face to the ground and while the arresting officer has been suspended the police chief defended his officers saying his department takes a much different approach and that sydney is not minnesota and reference to the death of george floyd. and elsewhere around the world pope francis is weighing in on the protests here in the u.s. in an address to his followers the pope said quote we cannot tolerate or turn a blind eye to racism he also expressed great concern about the disturbing social
5:14 pm
unrest in reaction to the killing of george floyd the pope added that nothing is gained by violence and so much is lost and called for national reconciliation and peace. and a former president george w. bush and barack obama both releasing rare public statements about the death of george boyd we're going to discuss that next with our friend larry king and then later at sports regina hamm shares what 8 orders in asia are doing to combat corona by. quarantine and make sure you keep up with the latest and anything you might have missed any download the iranian portable t.v. app it's free you can watch there 247 will be back in just 2. of them.

5:17 pm
well it's been 10 days since the death of george floyd which sparked nationwide protests against police brutality and until the last day or so living former u.s. presidents have largely stayed out of weighing in on this incident and especially withheld criticism of how the current president is handling the fallout so joining us with his thoughts on all of that the legendary larry king host of politicking all right larry you and i have discussed this a bit before president obama finally spoken out about this tragedy you mentioned how obama is able to connect with the people the way trump isn't given his mastery of oration and today right now actually in the 5 o'clock hour obama is hosting a virtual town hall regarding the unrest across the country do you think this is a good idea. you know
5:18 pm
a very good idea we need calmer voices to prevail and when you get 2 former presidents one will probably get more democrats speaking out against the violence i think george and laura bush's statement was eloquent i think obama's right on top of the. and that should trump won't listen to them sadly. you know he's one of the where presidents will never call on a former president presidents. crisis on a previous president to consult with them get some appeal from them because presidents fails to do that so we have nowhere to turn but to salute presidents bush and obama and i salute them. and also president george w. bush now weighing in he and laura have issued a written statement it starts out like this it says laura and i are anguished. by the brutal suffocation of george floyd and disturbed by the injustice and fear that
5:19 pm
suffocate our country yet we have resisted the urge to speak out because this is not the time for us to lecture it is time for us to listen it is time for america to examine our tragic failures and as we do we will also see some of our redeeming strengths now larry president bush has actually gotten a lot of blowback for the statement from anti-war voice anti iraq war in particular voices people like president bush dick cheney paul wolfowitz and you know his whole bunch still today very divisive characters should former presidents like george w. bush weigh in on this present day problem given their own kind of dark history. or do the orders cheney and wolfowitz angrier were all those them. say again what war do mr wolfowitz the vice president cheney were they met although the
5:20 pm
anti-war protesters are saying that bush and cheney and his the rest of his cabinet don't have a place to speak up about peace given that they started this false war in iraq. i see that as well as that's a blowback you're right now that's typical of what happens when you're in that order in. living that war again i think president bush was completely correct in speaking out we can look to the past to learn from the past but bringing up the war in iraq now is immaterial we have big problems we're facing right at this minute in this country and as long as president bush and president obama will face them by the way president carter was not very well or else i'm sure he'd be speaking out forcefully actually you know speaking of of president carter i was just handed this by the producers president carter has actually just now spoken out and he and
5:21 pm
rosalyn have issued a statement and he says. i did this is a short excerpt he says people of power privilege and moral conscience must stand up and say no more to racially discriminatory police and justice system immoral economic disparities between whites and blacks and government actions that undermine our unified democracy what do you do you think that well now we have a 3 living x. presidents talking out now and carter's statement i think is very much on the mark . hopefully that with the additional charges against the other police one and with the upgrading the charge to 2nd degree murder against the policeman who put his knee on the neck i hope that that will cause things to do to dot dot com i think we'll see a dampening now hopefully in the next few days yeah i would think the protests with
5:22 pm
their protests they got with that want to they've got the additional charges what what what's left to protest larry how do you see the country uniting out of this and moving forward how would you like to see that happen. but i'd love to see it happen we we 1st of all we were torn apart country before this but now this is just heightened what america was going through because as it is a deep divide between the right and the left between what people on the left say or people on the right say and that is not going to change but hopefully the rhetoric that goes to the streets some violence that will end we're always going to be divided this this election is coming this could be of. no way of forecasting what's going to happen in november we don't even know if they're going to be able to hold conventions now since these are sad sad times 1000000 upset and larry lastly a lot of celebrities and basically anyone who's who the who's who of anybody in
5:23 pm
hollywood you have talked to a lot of these hollywood heavyweights are now weighing in on the black lives matter movement and the police brutality do you think they help or hurt the message because perhaps they're you know maybe stealing the limelight because of just who they are like came crashing in. well it's a lot to ask of a celebrity to say don't say anything when they're citizens like everyone else they have the right to speak out either i don't think oprah winfrey speaking out 170 thing i think it helps i think bogo of being people of prominence who are vocal in times of turbulence help not hurt. all right we'll leave it right there with the celebrity of our own larry king legendary larry king host of politicking our friend thank you so much. thank you miller. meanwhile cope at 19 continues to spread worldwide with cases now topping 6400000 and 381000 reported
