5:01 pm
california mostly peaceful protests taking place but in some areas more looting or lockdown and now a new lawsuit details straight ahead all right it's time to boost your news to. a massive memorial service is being held today in minneapolis minnesota for george floyd this as america and the entire world remember the man whose death sparked a global movement for change and race relations and police tactics actually banks's a minute in minneapolis with a closer look at today's services. i am in front of north central university located in downtown minneapolis where memorial service for george floyd is under way and now reverend al sharpton will soon be delivering the eulogy for the civil rights leader he spoke to the president earlier today and he said as

a community we need to stop jumping from funeral to funeral for those who are not aware reverend al sharpton he deliberately eulogies for both michael michael. around to draw and eric garner is for the funeral and for those who are familiar with their garner he is someone who died in a similar fashion to george sharpton is basically saying enough is enough we need to stop this he simply called george floyd's death a murder he said he believes this time is different a pointing to the fact that people are marching and massive numbers crowds are so diverse and people are risking their lives in the middle of a panic demick he said this shows that there's a real passion and that there will be change within police departments across the country with reverend sharpton he added that minnesota attorney general keith ellison is a part he played a major role and bringing criminal charges against the 3 remaining officers domino we saw yesterday that the charges include aiding and abetting a 2nd degree murder which is punishable to up to 40 years and aiding and abetting
5:03 pm
2nd degree manslaughter which is punishable to up to 10 years and also former officer derek chauvin 3rd degree murder charge elevate it to the 2nd degree number demand from the lead attorney for the ford family say that these 3 officers were accomplices that. he tweeted the family's reaction yesterday saying that this is a bittersweet moment we're deeply gratified that the attorney general took decisive action arresting and charging all the officers involved in george floyd to death and i would bring the charge against their children to felony 2nd degree murder hash tag justice george from also said this is not a time to celebrate because an arrest is not a conviction and we want justice now i've been here for almost a week and i've spoken with caution of protesters of all backgrounds and resist and some of them tell me that they are willing to risk it all in the name of justice and change and clothing risking their lives protesters say they will continue until justice is served i want to mention we have seen it time and time again of our

police officers who have killed unarmed african-americans that oftentimes use excessive force are usually not church and if they are they're just not convicted so the. people in minneapolis are still waiting to see how this all plays out and i also want to mention the attorney general he stated that he's and i think for the public's patience in all of this he said that it's going to be really hard and troubling to convict the whole 4 officers back you know and washington d.c. as protests against police brutality continue across the united states lines of armed guards have formed as a barrier around the property surrounding the white house here in washington d.c. but who are these guards and what agency are they actually from artie's rachel blevins is joining us now live from outside of the white house with the latest on this so rachel what can you tell us who are these people. woman i know we actually have an update for you because while we saw those armed guards that were surrounding this area where i'm actually out right now they seem all but
5:05 pm
disappeared this morning so today we are much much closer to the white house than we were able to get yesterday and right now as you can see behind me there is a crowd of protesters and then behind them there is still that very large barrier that was put up around lafayette park and this area was completely off limits when we were here yesterday and it was surrounded by these armed guards and we're number of questions about exactly who those guards were what agency they were representing because many of them looked like they were ready to be deployed to a war zone but yet they had no insignia they had no badges telling her they were and when protesters and journalist questioned them which agency they were with they responded by saying that they work for the federal government or that they work for the department of justice now we're not seeing those guards here right now outside of the white house but the fact remains that there are a lot of questions about exactly who they were with and why they were allowed in this area now we've seen my maker speaking out against this so i say so what are your lawmakers calling for changes to

a democratic representative john boehner said quote it is unacceptable for uniform federal officers policing constitutionally protected assemblies to refuse to identify themselves to people who pay their salaries. denying accountability to the public they serve ensures abuses democratic senator chris murphy also took to twitter saying quote we cannot tolerate an american secret police i will be introducing legislation to require uniform federal officers performing i need to mess security duties to clearly identify what military branch or agency they represent the latest reports claim the armed guards at work here in d.c. were part of the specialized emergency response force run by the bureau of prisons which is part of the justice department to help maintain security at record so it is now the director of the bureau of prisons i actually spoke about that during a press conference earlier today take a listen to what he had to say. crisis management teams are highly trained to deal with the various types of the murders the situations including control and civil

disturbances they're experienced in confrontation avoid conflict resolution in the aftermath of the tragic death of george truly it is unfortunate that these services are necessary. now during that press conference attorney general william barr also said that there had been more than 50 arrests in relation to rioting and the federal officials who spoke were very focused on the violence that we saw this weekend against property here in the nation's capital but at the same time it's also important to note that we're out here for yet another day and yet the protests we have seen have been overwhelmingly peaceful the people who are gathered here have spent time sharing their stories of their experiences with police brutality and they have been very encouraging to one another so we really haven't seen those violent scenes that we're seeing over the weekend but it is interesting to see how the trend administration has responded to that and the fact that they have seemed to take very little response to all of the peacefulness that we have seen here in their focus up here is to be on that violence and how they are responding to that

now this obviously is a developing situation so we will continue to bring you the latest coverage but as for now it doesn't look like these protesters are going anywhere anytime. soon reporting from outside the white house rachel bobbins art scene. and another day of protests continuing throughout the state of california prompting areas impacted by looting to see more lock downs but now a lawsuit is in the works over restrictions are to correspondent natasha sweet has the latest from los angeles but 1st we want to warn our viewers that some of the video you're about to see will be disturbing to some viewers motional protests over the death of george floyd continue up and down the state of california dramatic video out of san diego where you can see a police car drives into a crowd of protesters downtown as they block the street at 6 and broadway the car continues down the street with a protester dragging along its hood roughly $200.00 national guard members arrive

cannot be both with me yeah you're right. i'm holland cook i invite you to climb with me above the main stream media empire and from that higher fantasia to glimpse the big picture question more. today virginia governor ralph northam a democrat is expected to announce plans to remove one of the country's most iconic monuments to the confederacy a huge statue of general robert e. lee which has been sitting for decades along richmond's famed monument avenue this on the heels of the death of george floyd which is rig night and racial tensions
5:15 pm
across the country civil rights activists believe this removal is a huge win for their cause and are now pushing for all other monuments of the confederacy be removed across the country now critics of this move say this is a push to remove history altogether for more on this let's bring in conservative radio talker steve gruber all right steve on one hand folks are saying the time has come to remove all monuments that spark pain for the black community on the other hand some argue that these monuments are not about racism that they represent america's history good bad ugly that the civil war actually killed lots of white americans how do you read this move by governor northam. well i got to the truth and everything you just said there chan and militants and make this up and what i mean by that is these monuments do honor people that took up arms against the united states and so i've never had an issue honestly with removing some of these
5:16 pm
confederate statues this one of robert e. lee has been there since 8090 and richmond in richmond of course being the former capital of the confederacy were jefferson davis and his war council took up arms and fought the united states of america for 4 years so the removal of confederate statues i understand that honestly i'm not sure that ralph northam is the right guy to be doing it based on his checkered past and yes the black based on the ku klux klan outfit and everything that he's been involved with i think that's pretty questionable to have this guy the irony is not lost on me that in all honesty i don't think we celebrate those a take up arms against united states and so i i don't have an issue take it down but on the same token as you mention it is a racing history it's a page of george orwell it's newspeak it's a race the past and then it doesn't exist it's important for people to understand the past so that we can learn from it i think it's extremely critical now the interesting thing about this 14 foot statue of robert e. lee that sits on top of i think 50 feet of granite is it stayed on there are other
5:17 pm
statues long monument boulevard there that are privately owned so i wonder if this statue be moved to private hands somewhere because i do believe that is important whether it's in museums or on display somewhere to talk about our past that we don't have these kind of painful incidents in the future but as far as celebrating confederate generals robert e. lee here stonewall jackson or or any of frankly i'm ok with those taxes go to norway all right and what about the argument that you know history is written by the victors and in this case the confederacy obviously last thing in one add to that argument hold any water here. well you know you look at this i believe robert e. lee died in 107712 years after the end of the war i believe that ulysses s. grant would have been president at the time the robert e. lee died and it wasn't until $898.00 that this was erected and it's true about a lot of these statues across the southern united states the former confederate states of which there were 11 you look at these statues many of them were put up
5:18 pm
for 405060 years or more after the end of the civil war and of course the they are the folks that lost the war the southern states lost the war and to then put up the statues and celebrate their adverts to me seems. odd to say the least so i don't have an issue with removing the statues again but again they didn't go up an 865 or 866 they didn't go up when the the wounds of the civil war were still fresh in america they want to decade sometimes many decades later and now you see that they do create this division in america now i understand that there are people who support the history of the statue's i understand that their daughters of the confederacy and sons of the confederacy that say listen my grandparents or great grandparents fought in the civil war and we should honor them but that to an extent ok i can appreciate your point of view but the point of you overall is these are people that took up arms against the united states of america and it's not for lincoln an exceptional president an exceptional human being this nation would have
5:19 pm
fallen apart at that time and what about this during this time of of civil unrest calls far beyond the pale am black lives matter bringing loudly there and there is graffiti of that. generally a statue but does that man mean that white lives matter less what the former to be true. either in american lives matter and i think that's about i think american lives matter and i think that we should honor americans and i don't think we do as ourselves any service by degrading the life and the legacy of george floyd. by looting and rioting and tearing down statues and putting up graffiti and stealing televisions and speakers and whatnot i think that is a stain on the life of george floyd in a way that it shouldn't be there there is no question that police officers involved with his death should be facing stiff charges as they are in minnesota but i think that we lose something in the in the messaging that we riot in the streets when
5:20 pm
there is violence on the streets when there are bricks being thrown through windows i don't think that that's the message of of who we are and i don't get who we want to be as americans either so i can see the statues going down but with graffiti being painted on the statues of i think that i think that cheapens message that could otherwise be a good teaching moment not only for the young people america for all people ok america great intially and steve lastly for the time being the governor of virginia is asking for ideas on what to do with the now defunct memorabilia you got any ideas well like i said they i museums are important places for them to reside if they go into private hands i think that's an important place let's be honest it's part of american heritage important it's a pivotal point in american history you don't just bury it you don't just melted down and turn it into something else forgetting about who robert e. lee in or of jefferson davis or stonewall jackson or or nothing new bedford. you

don't forget about teach folks i mean the people who started the ku klux klan they should be remembered for what they did wrong frankly and to emphasize what we are not wrong in the name of the things that were done that divided this nation's time to heal this nation in a full step forward is taking these statues down of those who took up arms against america this conservative it's ok with that fair enough well leave that as the last word same group i thank you for your time today thank you very much. meanwhile coke at 19 continues to grip the world cases now topping 6500000 with about 388000 deaths reported globally the u.s. still leading the way with the most confirmed cases followed by brazil and russia taking a closer look at this country the u.s. now with 1800000 cases and about 107000 deaths. and amid the nationwide protests over the pollution george lloyd health experts are
