i am 8 in 10 voters say the country's on the wrong track what does that mean for trump's reelection and joe biden's chances former new mexico governor bill richardson is here with us with his take on this is the politics of. the politicking on larry king according to a new poll of vast when giardia voters think the united states is heading in the wrong direction and this as we enter the 2nd week of black lives matter protests across the united states what does all this mean for the fall election and our standing in the world will start there with bill richardson former u.s. ambassador to the u.n. former democratic governor new mexico and he served as secretary of energy in the

administration of bill clinton. bill always good to see of protests all across america not going away we've seen this before but people are saying this time is to it's different you think it's different. it is different larry because this poll is very important in a presidential race whether the country's going on the right or wrong direction and clearly americans are dissatisfied with with the economy there's 21000000 americans still unemployed there's racial tension there's a perception that the president and his at ministration have not done well in protecting us from the virus although there is progress so i think it looks good right now you hate the predicts so early 5 months away for joe biden my only worry is that joe biden who i'm supporting not take the race for granted i like him to

get out of his living room and get out with the people more into the key states like michigan ohio pennsylvania iowa florida but i think he's a our strongest candidate numb pleased with the direction his campaign is take you think in terms of race relations will never be the same. that's right larry i mean i know right now i think there's a perception by the american people a sizable majority that race relations are in very bad shape these deaths of so many african-americans the tension between communities and the police i just think this is not just democrats this is republicans democrats independent thinking that we need a healer now we need a president that is going to bring the country together and somehow that's not happening especially in race relations i don't think it'll ever be the same what do

you make of this president who. can seem to bring himself to have empathy autumn for new sunni in the country. well i think you see it with him wanting to use the riots in washington gassing people using the military going to a church using a prop of the bible but not showing empathy not trying to bring the country together heal saying instead of saying we're going to dominate those profit protester saying i understand your protests i understand we need to heal and he doesn't show any empathy and what i think eventually is going to be the deciding factor in this race larry is people are going to be tired of this they're going to want a stability and i think joe biden brings that brings not terribly much excitement

but he brings competence he brings experience stability and empathy because everybody knows the man joe biden has suffered the death of his wife the death of his son of the death of his of both by this is 2 kids so again i just think that's what's going to be the deciding factor people are just going to be tired of a president that doesn't show an ability to bring us together instead just dividing us. it's funny that can you seen president trump in the oval office making hearten playing to americans for unity. well. i understand that that's under consideration but it just may be too late but he should still do it larry he's still somebody i consider my president i just think we're at such a stage of disunity of protests and people being tired and

the cold it has brought a lot of venting that is also common among our people but but a fresh gratian that somehow a president like john f. kennedy like clinton obama like george w. bush colin powell they're wanting us to come together in this president is unable to do that given george for him may be what change this election the death of george floyd changed things dramatically in america and it doesn't go away. yes i think george floyd is the tipping point but i think you already saw it with the american people thinking the president moved too late on a covert issue 21000000 unemployed in economy and in deep trouble. also i do think the george floyd issue is changed the relationship between the american people and the african-american community where there's enormous support

and sympathy for the protesters and for those african americans that unfortunately have been victims of police brutality and it's also changed the relationship we have i think with the police now we don't want to defund the police but i think we need more. african-americans hispanics and police forces i think larry we need to take that military gear that police departments get and if we need to find ways in which communities work together closer with the police get the bad apples out of the police but you know this defund the police get them out of the way that's not going to have a game here not what is deemed fun mean take away their money away got to pay their salaries what i mean by defunding. well i don't i think that's a confusing term but in my view you don't take away their salaries the men and

women of the police i think what needs to happen is as i said get communities closer with the police let them examine their procedures better get rid of the bad apples more training more community policing find ways that you bring communities closer to it to beas police make more african-americans. and hispanics and minorities part of the police force stop racial profiling i think you're going to see a lot of communities do that stop the chokeholds minneapolis' done that i think you're going to make that that'll be more prevalent throughout the country nixon won barely 1968 running on law and order do you think that could work now for 4 trump law and order a campaign. well look most americans support law and order we should

support our military we should support our law enforcement but law in order for this president's men gassing prosensa protestors it's meant finding ways to disperse protesters bring the military the national guard our military into domestic disturbances like d.c. walking to a church with a bible i think this is unprecedented and this is why i think you're going to see a sizable number of moderate republicans in the suburbs women that turn against the president in the presidential election. talk about the vice presidency you once had a team searching for a possible vice president right. well i was considered a couple of times for vice pres i didn't quite make it but i know the process larry

what is the process the process is they extensively the presidential candidates examine your tax records they examine your you're all kinds of statements you've made before they poll to see obeah help the ticket they he they go around asking about rumors about your life. i am please i think for the 1st time larry the vice presidential debate is going to be key in who wins the presidential election because we the democrats we're going to have a woman and i think you're going to see. an effort and an election where. men and women of color a spanish safir can americans women are going to get elected more than a half before speaking a woman and the you have a favorite you're a governor what do you think michelle good. well i'm for her but i think the

president has got to make that choice the 1st qualification is can this person step in to be president the 2nd it has. what are we going to do about winning in other words you know there's polling over who can bring the most votes i think this president it's going to be very tough for him not to pick an african-american i think there are very strong candidates i think we need mat's a month turnout in the african-american and hispanic communities around the country i think the president also while i support michelle grifter and you know i'm part of spanish. i do think that he has a big debt to the african-american community to congressman clyburn in south carolina revived this campaign so i think it's going to be tough for the vice president biden to pick an african-american woman but that's my opinion they don't

ask my opinion so as if it is and if it isn't governor gresham who me of think it will be. i think i think what i'm hearing is that congresswoman belt deming's is is surging i think senator come on harris would be a very strong candidate so i'd say it's between those 2 in my judgment right now but the vice president is not going to pick till august and things may change in august polling issues i think race relations somebody that knows law enforcement the police this is like think bell demming so i don't know i just have seen her on television being a former police chief being a very good congresswoman i think she's kind of surging but the selectional be made in late july. 2 republicans have come forward to oppose the president one in office

mitt romney and one not colin powell what what do you make of those 2 going their own way. well i believe it's significant particularly george w. bush that he is saying that he's moving in another direction he represents the moderate wing of the republican party he represents even though i disagreed with a lot of things he did a unity of bipartisanship colin powell is a national hero republican and i think it's significant i think you're seeing also senator murkowski a courageous senator from alaska you're seeing the republicans become emboldened and i think if this starts occurring more in the u.s. senate there's 2 senators not mitt romney and murkowski that's going to be very significant in the erosion of the support for president trump will be right back

could get. steve linnik state department for the inspector general to be terminated you've called the series of findings unprecedented what it what's going on. well inspector generals i was in the cabinet and your cabinet secretary inspector general says supposed to deal with fraud and waste and problems they're not necessarily your allies but they work for the american people they work for the congress and i don't know what the cases in the state department are but you know fire inspector generals the way this administration has in the intelligence community and human services now at the state department it's unprecedented you shouldn't do that i mean there's no there are employees of the president but that's on press it's never happened before and these are people career people mostly the try to find problems in your department

when i was a department of energy i called in my inspector general i said is name was great friedman what can we do to work together i don't want problems with you but you found some problems here and we worked together and he had by that be through his retirement party i'm not saying i'm the perfect example but you don't fire inspector generals with the coded 19 in the protests in the streets a we haven't had much attention paid for foreign involvement. what concern jew are around the world now well you know we have the united states with 110 deaths we have proportionately the greatest number of deaths of any country to deal with future pandemics in this cove we need international cooperation so what do we do which was a big mistake get out of the world health organization beat up on china ok china is

partly responsible because they get a lot of information but we should be working together with the european union with the best scientists and researchers in the world and larry we're not doing that we're trashing everybody we're going it alone that doesn't work america should lead but with international cooperation is there a trouble spot that concerns you. yes the big trouble spot in my judgment is still north korea because. we haven't had negotiations with him i worry he's building more nuclear weapons i think with iran. there's tension they're starting to build the a nuclear stockpile again. what i'd this like the most larry is that we don't seem to have too many friends anymore we've shunned the united nations the world health organization our european allies the french the germans

these are countries that have normally always been on our side we neglect a 3rd world so i just think we've got to change our international posture to cooperation not confrontation. do you think our handling of the cold the 19 pandemic has affected us around the world well it happens because we have not cooperated with other countries as much as we should. look i'm glad that we have some potential breakthroughs with the vaccine dr 5 i work with in mn the clinton administration east good but it just seems a lot of the decisions made at the white house internationally and within states attacking governors especially if they're democrats is too political. it's to try to get political credit and i just think that's wrong what is are you paying close

attention to this what's our image around the world right now our image around well in my opinion it's deteriorated we used to be the leader nobody looks at us as a leader anymore they see it as a problem how can we do this good thing deal with the pandemic deal with the iranian issue deal with china without the united states because they're going to get in the way that shouldn't be the case larry then you haue had an organization what's it called. it's called the richardson center for global diplomacy and we work on american hostages try to get them out we work on protecting refugees we work on dialogue with north korea we work with supporting. elephants in africa keeping them from being poached and kill i'm having a good time making individual difference help the rowing does and not refugees that

are also have a lot of i'm starting to get the coded so trying to do some good larry occasionally it works i'm very happy about this hostage release several days ago michael white that's what we do i'm a private citizen also trying to help the navajo nation that has been hit hard in the west with the coded the border hispanic communities i just think i have a responsibility now that i'm out of office still a little gas in the tank trying to help people and that's what i'm trying to do you concerned that the opening of america may be too soon. no i think you've got to balance it i think for instance in new mexico my governor's done a good job of protecting the new mexico people from the covalent

social distancing stay at home orders infection rates but we're also a rural poor state so i think there has to be a balance larry opening up the hotels opening up. the opportunities were big tourism economy retail workers now i think the proper balance it goes state by state but in my state i think what is key here larry is governors of done a good job republican governors mike de wine in ohio larry open to maryland the governor cuomo in new york the governor california my governor i think those that are trying to balance but give priority to protecting the health of the american people it's states that are taking the right action not the federal government there behind the states no doubt to follow g.

said this could come back. that's right i mean it if there could be a 2nd way but we should be prepared but until that 2nd way let's gradually open the economy with care with proper balancing with security and measures that protect health social distancing should continue research into the vaccine obviously has to continue wearing masks you know i've got several mass here we got to do that we i got to work together and protect each other. do you ms public office. no but it casually because i still have this foundation i get involved no i've done well since i left office financially i've got this foundation the kasia only i miss it but not i'm fine i'm fine doing what i'm doing it's making

a contribution i still feel that i'm doing it but no i don't need to go back to washington in elective or a point of capacity i'm here in santa fe doing what i want to do what about the process of running for office did you enjoy that i love that i love campaigning i love shaking hands i love the human touch now larry it's all like we you and i are doing here it's all zoom i've missed those days i miss the big conventions i miss the the campaigning and handshaking but it's dramatically change and that's a reality we have to accept that we shouldn't be interacting or touch each other well the scope it is still very very much present but i'll be glad when it's over believe me when you use that word do you think we might not have conventions. well

i think the. it's likely we will not have conventions the democratic side of the odds are it's going to be what is called a virtual convention i know president trump wants to have a convention no matter what he's moving it out of north carolina great state by the way because he wants to have all of the hoopla and the rallies i would be very careful but i think the democratic we're doing it right we're waiting till a final decision is made and think vice president biden will be a key player in that decision i think he's doing a good job in his campaign the vice president i want him to get out to a little more go to michigan do the virtual stuff there doc do it all in his living room because he's quite a guy joe biden when he agree or disagree with his policies he's an extraordinary marnell being he's a wonderful human being he knows everybody he knows
