a comment section anymore specifically because it's not so i mean imagine if you tried to tell you tube that they advertise on you tube we're going to be held liable for what's said on you tube videos on the meat video it's insane to think that a short term we've seen a certain level of responsibility from certain organizations just around suspending the comment section when they see that it's gone too far into the weeds or when it's become too racist or too then a big or too you know anti muslim we've seen those types of things before but that's organizations taking the lead and saying hey you know this we're in a direction that nobody really needs to see but again it's hard to mandate what people are going to say outside people on your platform and i'm going to really tired from the both the left and the right basically attacking each other's messages online and trying to censor each other's messages but look there's a ton of stuff i don't like to read and i don't want to see and i find deplorable and despicable but they still have a right to say it you know and i have a right to react to it i don't want to see it censored exactly but i would feel

differently if the publication endorsed the comment right it's very different if you have an article that is run that is blatantly racist and one that uses a lot of the undertones that we do see in some of these comments but again these are individuals who are making their voices heard yes a lot of them are probably in their basement typing things that are should never be uttered out loud people get a lot of a lot of courage when they are in the comment section they wouldn't have outside of that but i just don't feel like there should be liability on any society is going to even if they do produce an article that is blatantly racist society will shun them for of society will pay them back for it remember free speech you know whether you agree that free speech is actually there to protect unpopular speech popular speech doesn't need protection everyone loves it really at the heart of this though is whether or not a big argument. with all of this is whether or not n.b.c. the reporter who wrote this piece for n.b.c. you know was basically you know showed google what there's other companies said dead men put out this tweet saying like thanks to you know fake news and see see the hate that their hard work and their collaboration collaboration being this

keyword was like oh did n.b.c. collaborate with those groups to get the bedroom list and 0 hedge you know attack by google ads that's where the big kind of controversy with all this sits and to me i look at it now i'm kind of like it's a stupid tweet because you can read any and everything and collaborated. and because she kind of walked into something that was already set in motion the federalist and a lot of organizations on the right feel as though they are their speech is being taken off of certain platforms specifically those that they see as more left leaning or having more left leaning support and this kind of help to feed that monster so i think that they're blowing the tweet out of proportion granted she shouldn't if that in any way. while the united states continues to reopen the threat and the danger of covert 19 has not by any means gone away with new spikes in states like arizona and florida long known as the destinations for americans we're tired and elderly it appears that this virus is

still at the throats of the most vulnerable of our population are to americans john honey is in florida with the latest on kobe $1000.00 the tax on america's thing your citizens over 1000 continues to plague nursing homes and assisted living facilities throughout the united states as more states continue to reopen the wall street journal reports that as nursing homes and other senior care facilities have started allowing more visits the death toll at these facilities has surpassed 50000 accounting for 43 percent of coven 1000 deaths in the united states this is health care advocates raise more concerns about nursing homes not being adequately inspected nationwide to see if they're following proper procedures to prevent the spread. of the virus a report by the center of medicare advocacy found that 5724 surveys cited infection control deficiencies in 163 nursing facilities in 30

states and only a little more than half of the nursing homes in the u.s. had received inspections florida texas california and ohio had some of the worst infection rates act nursing homes in the country parent florida there are reports of new clusters of corona virus infections at nursing homes with recent inspections turning up alarming conditions at some of these facilities as the state continues to reopen. the miami herald reports about one facility in the florida keys that's become a cluster for corona virus cases and quote received a 2nd critical report in as many months detailing deficiencies that include understaffing inadequate care and isolation for kovan 1000 patients and unsanitary conditions that could promote the spread of the disease that's only one example but there are plenty more nationwide seam of her mother head of the centers for medicare medicaid services or c.m.s.

a lot of the visitation like you they can not have any visitors at all but my question is what are they doing to regulate the people that work there exactly the i mean that's a great question and you know when you mention like people you know when you see reports of like you know dr fouts you can go saying like oh you know they held back on telling people to use face masks early on because they they knew their suppliers were so low you know i mean he said quote we were concerned that it was out of time when personal protective equipment including the in $95.00 mass in the surgical mask were in very short supply i get like hey you don't want everyone going out and having everything disappear like toilet paper did early on in this but inform people i shouldn't have to read about this after the fact tell people hey we don't have enough masks we would you know same thing with nursing homes like how do you not follow up on that and check on these to make sure. seizures are being followed for our our most elderly and the people that we that we say we care about when you know that this is going to be nearly ground 0 yes for any infections it just absolutely breaks my heart on every level. all right as we go to break remember

atlanta georgia is known for being the hotbed of civil rights advocacy and the fight for justice hot lanta is black hollywood boasting top entertainers and rap in r. and b. it's also home to famed film producer tyler perry's 300 acre studio but for all the talk of success it limits seen over the past years what doesn't get reported nearly as much is that it limit has the worst inequality in the united states despite being home to several fortune $500.00 companies while the national and international spotlight from the death of george floyd sparked a movement we're still seeing cops abuse blacks as if america isn't in crisis mode in atlanta the recent death of ray sharp brooks at the hands of a police officer led to heightened protests the burning of a windies and calls for immediate reforms the civil unrest in atlanta is brought on by a few 'd things it has brought to the forefront black folks who feel they haven't been heard who often are odds with a popularized image of the city and are ready for their stories to finally come to

light they're calling out political leadership the police and the wealthy elite who paying image of the city thousands of black atlantans simply don't see with mayor kesha lance bottoms under consideration as a running mate for democratic presidential nominee joe biden all eyes are on her leadership in this moment atlanta's black hollywood is in the national spotlight and it steps during this time of protests and calls for systemic change could be a well map for the nation joining us now is political director for the a.c.l.u. of georgia chris bruce and with the people's response atlanta. guys charges were announced just a few hours ago for the officers involved in. what are your immediate reactions. of course about ok go ahead go ahead we'll start with you chris. well thank you thank you for having me on the show. i'll start off by saying we need to look

at a whole hearted you of what's happening with this case so we know that there are charges against the police officers and now one police officer is allegedly going to be a state witness against the other police officer that actually did the shooting the thing that i really want to point out is what exactly is justice in this situation because what i don't want to happen is for this to happen again next year or next month so having police being charged with the murder is a step forward but getting ultimately to changing the police so they never encounter this type of situation again is really where the city of atlanta needs to be and the rest of the nation the united states. daniel i want to ask you you know allana seems to be battling an image issue right now or you know some citizens feel that what's being projected to america isn't exactly what's felt on the ground i know you're a good organization has been there on the ground with covert 19 trying to help people out and keep them you know safe from this pandemic this schism is now being

amplified by the protests in the wake of race car brooks's death as if we should mentioned earlier what steps is atlanta taking to remedy or course correct not only the excessive force and policing if any you know in terms of stuff fixing it and respond to calls from all the atlantans will build essentially left out of what's being called the black mecca in the middle of the country. to be honest i don't really think that it has been making any moves to reconcile what has been happening . i think it was right in to say like what is just kind of look like in this moment i mean we're saying they're arresting a police officer but how does that change the history of systemic racism that is happening in this country the system the criminal justice system is retribution it's not really tackling. this is stomach issues that are deeply ingrained. in this country. and on top of that we have public officials who are constantly coming up

with. giving empty promises right for example with keesha lance bottoms saying that they were going to close down a city detention center and now we're seeing that she's trying to push 18000000 into delegates have decided to keep it open won't really were supposed to change it into health and wellness center. additionally talking about how in her campaign she wanted to stop sending all police officers over to israel to get training and her 2016 campaign and then in 2800 sent over 80 officers over there so receiving that public health or the public officials are going back on their word and then are really trying to remedy anything. and their been several media outlets that are pointing to the differences in the george blake case and the rich are bookcase they seem to largely fall on brooks used to take his or in the telcel of police officers chris what role do you think

this is going to play in finding justice for brooks. i think that there are several media outlets that are stirring up controversy which is something that happens with media outlets all the time but when it comes down to what actually happened between our books and george floyd they were killed 2 black men were killed by staying say police officers and that's exactly what really needs to be pointed you know why do we always have a history of police officers targeting hunting and killing black men so finding justice again doesn't go along with well and eye for eye type of situation a life for life such a situation justice would be missed not happening again and you could point to the rich or brooks. situation and easily find another way of dealing with this dealing with the differences between law enforcement and public safety law enforcement says

you may allegedly have a d.-y. on your hands because he was behind the veil and allegedly under the influence you could be arrested or charged with a dui and then within that you see the catapults action whilst there was an argument there was a fight that ensued and there was a shooting where a black man was killed and now 2 officers are charged and their lives are going to be ruined to compare to public safety where you can go ahead and say oh if this young gentleman was you need paraded at the time allegedly calling it over calling a live calling somebody to say come pick him up issue a citation we can to deal with this issue later on but you have a black man that goes home to his family to his daughters who was having a birthday and 2 police officers who can also go back on the street so there's differences between the 2 but when it really comes down to it we need to figure out

the similarities of the problems that happen systemically in our policing system. daniel and i want to ask you to you know you're as i mentioned you're there on the ground and you're fighting this sort of ground level in trying to help people what is something that these these cities and atlanta and other cities what it is like there's a lot of things they can do to fix what in your view do should be the 1st thing fix right out the gate who could actually bring somebody quality and bring some justice to a lot of the citizens in these cities. the found in abolish the police and that is frightening for most we have seen that the police officers that have been multiple reforms that have been trying to instill that and police departments and we've seen that none of those trainings have are effective i believe the officer who killed a sharp rocks had a training diversity training a couple months ago and yet the result was that a unarmed black man was killed. and i think a lot of cities across the nation are calling for a defunding of the police and abolition of not just the police but the president

doesn't accomplish as a whole because the system is a racist system that criminalizes broken bodies and ultimately smartish them and sometimes a sentence so their media think that we can do as a country and just cities across the nation is to immediately defund the police and used those funds and direct into public services thank you for bringing up the prison industrial system it's a good good point to move. chris this is for you and dan if you can chime in as well but qualified immunity that's a big buzzword going around right now we definitely want to touch on this qualified immunity prevents police from being charged and prosecuted in many cases actually in 99 percent of cases where there is a murder involved where is it land in the state of georgia on providing penalty for officers who use excessive force and ensuring they do face charges when these murders occur. well we've seen what's happening with shar books and other officers that have been happening district attorney paul howard has

brought a worn out for their arrest and has committed to ensuring that they would be indicted on this. qualified immunity is something that has always played as you point out of the american criminal system when it comes to holding police officers accountable so the city of atlanta on the state of georgia they have a long way to go when it comes to holding police officers accountable and police officers are pushing back honestly and they need to take account ability to what the problems that are happening within themselves police officers can police themselves as well and saying the standards that we have to stand is that we should be held to should be also held in the law in solidified by statute but you need to hear that from police officers too so until we get state legislation until the city of atlanta poses imports together some policies then we will have a long way to go. on that.

so i want to say what did justice look like for catherine johnson what did justice look like for alexa christian nicholas thompson john mara and robinson came rogers oscar kane jimmy actions and griffin all these people who were murdered at the hands of police here in atlanta and what it just is look like for them i think the only way that we can move past qualified immunity and actually seek justice for everyone is so again like i said define the police and abolish the prison industrial complex as the only way forward it seems to be that all the signs are definitely going to point in that direction because you know we've got a lot of promises over the years over and over and over i think we're sick of promises and we need to see action i want to thank you both for the work that you're doing out there to find justice and find out equality thank you both for joining us chris brooks there on your bizarre pleasure very much having you both on today and keep up the great work. thank you so much thank you go on. wild conversation is a lot of good answers and i think that you know that resonating back there around
