china has just announced sanctions against the united states which target some of beijing's most vocal critics this comes one week after the u.s. sanctioned several chinese officials over reports that they are targeting some ethnic minorities artie's racial blevins is joining us now to break down the latest developments here so rachel what explanation did beijing give for the sanctions well a spokesperson for china's foreign ministry spoke out and she said that these sanctions are specifically in retaliation to the same sions that were imposed by the u.s. last week and which they accuse several chinese officials of human rights abuses against ethnic and religious minorities now china has denied these accusations repeatedly and it also accuse the united states of trying to meddle in its internal affairs take a listen. the vicious harassment interrogation and threats by the united states

seriously damaged the legitimate rights and interests of chinese citizens in the us and also interrupted and destroy the normal people to people exchanges which has turned into outright political persecution is that transgressed moral duty and destructive self image. now beijing also accuse the us of trying to increase tensions because the state department sun on a warning over the weekend to any u.s. citizen living in or traveling through china and which is said that they should be on notice that they could be wrongfully detained for political reasons ok so then who exactly did china target with these sanctions and how are those people responding well these sanctions go after u.s. officials and lawmakers who have been known of some of beijing's harshest critics and who have called for president trump to pursue really strict policies against china now these names include sam brownback trump's ambassador at large for international religious freedom republican senators marco rubio and ted cruz and republican representative chris smith now in response to the news they of course

sends out an e-mail to thousands of employees as an alert saying if you have a company device you must delete to talk off that device because it is now threatening your amazon e-mails it's threatening your intro work e-mails there's a threat because of the chinese government in their access to what you might have somebody is having high level conversations at amazon to the point where someone drafted this e-mail or maybe the e-mail was a draft they were planning to send out in the future in the near future but. it doesn't make sense for some random employed to write out a small a civic warning about to talk accidentally sent out that wasn't supposed to go out apparently the at some level amazon is considering doing this in the future well here's the big question and then do they perhaps know something that you and i don't know about i know you just joined tech talk yourself. yeah here's the thing is that there is a huge push right now to essentially disassociate from tick-tock we know that india

is doing that they have pushed to talk out of the country we know that mike pompei the secretary of state's talking about doing that the reality though that as far as i'm concerned is that is it true that to talk is gathering data on you and reviewing what's on your phone it's very possible that it's happening but the issue that i have with it isn't that talk is doing it it's that all tech companies are doing it now and the attitude towards to talk is because it's chinese it is inevitably bad that they do it but when facebook does it arizona's doing it with the alexa that it's not a bad thing it's ok because these are american companies yeah and so it's it's a huge level hypocrisy and by the way as you mentioned in the lead up here wells fargo actually just did this with their employees telling their employees on company phones they cannot have took the uk so i mean if there is this chatter coming out of washington then if this is you know a state department line in the sand to you and take tock what do you think will

happen what do you think that signals to to us the consumer or what do you think that signals about u.s. china relations if this all out right man could happen. well i think a rule it says several things about the us trying to relationship with just certainly that if that's only going to amplify and accelerate a division between the u.s. and china which isn't necessarily a good thing but again there's another issue here and that is the issue of the fight with everybody else is playing by the different set of rules from what i can tell and from all the information that's been presented there is no indication that to talk is doing anything that other tech companies are not also doing and so the fact that you would say this one is a threat when they do it because of their relations with the chinese government but these companies are not a threat when they do it even though they have a relationship with the u.s. government i think that is problematic and it's certainly problematic because no one is standing up and say milk company should be gathering this information there is no credible voice pushing back on the idea that tech companies are gathering in
