3:00 pm
hello there i'm an english and you're watching and question broadcasting from our to america's national news headquarters in washington d.c. today top stories 1st in a tit for tat move china slapping sanctions on 3 u.s. lawmakers and a u.s. envoy in retaliation for u.s. sanctions against preachings treatment leaders we've got the details straight ahead plus amazon now backtracking saying the memo sent to employees to delete tech talk was sent in error this wild wells fargo now demanding employees to delete that out from work problems over security concerns we're going to discuss plus an iranian militia group now claiming it attacked a u.s. convoy in iraq in just a few minutes we'll discuss how the u.s.
3:01 pm
is reacting and how it would like to respond all right it's time to stream music i . china has just announced sanctions against the united states which target some of beijing's most vocal critics this comes one week after the u.s. sanctions several chinese officials over reports that they are targeting some ethnic minorities artie's racial blevins is joining us now to break down the latest developments here so rachel what explanation did beijing give for the sanctions or a spokesperson for china's foreign ministry spoke out and she said that these sanctions are specifically in retaliation to distinctions that were imposed by the u.s. last week and which they accuse several chinese officials of human rights abuses against ethnic and religious minorities now china has denied these accusations repeat. and it also accused the united states of trying to meddle in its internal
3:02 pm
affairs take a listen the vicious harassment interrogation and threats by the united states seriously damaged the legitimate rights and interests of chinese citizens in the us and also interrupted and destroyed the normal people to people exchanges which has turned into outright political persecution now beijing also accuse the us of trying to increase tensions because the state department sent on a warning over the weekend to any u.s. citizen living in or traveling through china and which is said that they should be on notice that they could be wrongfully detained for political reasons ok so then who exactly did china target with these sanctions and how are those people responding well these sanctions go after u.s. officials and lawmakers who have been known of some of beijing's harshest critics and who have called for president trump to pursue really strict policies against china now these names include sam brownback trump's ambassador at large for international religious freedom republican senators marco rubio and ted cruz and
3:03 pm
republican representative chris smith now in response to the news they of course took to twitter were rubio wrote the communist party of china has banned me from entering the country i guess they don't like me and cruz wrote balmer i was going to take my family to beijing for summer vacation right after visiting tehran so it doesn't appear that they're too upset about this news sure and how do you think this will impact the overall relations between the u.s. and china especially on the trade front given you know the back and forth to protect for trade has been going on for like 2 years exactly and this seems to be just the latest conflict between the 2 countries and given all of the current tensions it is even led president trump to say that he's not sure if there will be a phase 2 of the trade deal now he was asked about this by reporters in which he responded and said the u.s. relationship with china has been severely damaged by the corona virus pandemic you allege that china could have stopped the plague as he called it but failed to do so and he claimed that pursuing phase 2 of a trade. it isn't on the table right now because he is dealing with other issues
3:04 pm
now we've seen from go back and forth in recent months on saying whether or not he wants to even continue with phase one so now remains to be seen how the latest actions war playing a role in all of the tensions that we see going on and here he was hoping to have the trade deal done before their 2020 alexion but here we are reach of levin's thank you so much thank you. and amazon has backed away from an e-mail sent friday instructing employees to delete tick-tock from company mobile devices now amazon says that e-mail which was sent as an alert to thousands of amazon employees was a mistake in the now retracted e-mail amazon had stated this quote due to security risks the tick tock app is no longer permitted on mobile devices that access amazon e-mail if you have to talk on your device you must remove it by 10 july to retain mobile access to amazon e-mail at this time using to talk from your amazon laptop
3:05 pm
browser is allowed so joining us now to discuss all that the best co-host investigative journalist fenceline all right ben so when amazon speaks we know the whole world listens what were some of the immediate fall out problems from the original e-mail. rigidly with his e-mail went out obviously everybody jumped on it to us senators reid tweeted josh hawley the republican senator from missouri so there was time for the u.s. government to follow suit to do with amazon was doing but of course within a couple of hours it was on backtracked and released a statement i want to read you what they said they came out saying this morning's e-mail to some of our boys was sent in error they said there is no change to our policies right now with regard to talk. so right now right now so as we speak right now there is this reversal do we know why or how this could have been accidentally. sent out well that's that's the whole question
3:06 pm
about the right now isn't it i mean when when amazon essentially sends out an e-mail to thousands of employees as an alert saying if you have a company device you must delete to talk off that device because it is now threatening your amazon e-mails it's threatening your intro work e-mails there's a threat because of the chinese government in their access to what you might have somebody is having high level conversations at amazon to the point where someone drafted this e-mail or maybe the e-mail was a draft they were planning to send out in the future in the near future but. it doesn't make sense for some random employed to write out a smile a civic warning about to talk accidentally sent out that wasn't supposed to go out apparently the at some level amazon is considering doing this in the future well here's the big question and then do they perhaps know something that you and i don't know about i know you just joined tech talk yourself. yeah here's the thing
3:07 pm
is that there is a huge push right now to essentially disassociate from tick-tock we know that india is doing that they have pushed to talk out of the country we know that mike pompei the secretary of state's talking about doing that the reality though as far as i'm concerned is that is it true that to talk is gathering data on you and reviewing what's on your phone it's very possible that it's happening but the issue that i have with it isn't that talk is doing it it's that all tech companies are doing it now and the attitude towards to talk is because it's chinese it is inevitably bad that they do it but when facebook does it and is on is do we know where that is not a bad thing it's ok because these are american companies yeah and so it's it's a huge level hypocrisy and by the way as you mentioned in the lead up here wells fargo actually just did this with their employees telling their employees on company phones they cannot have tick tock so i mean if there is this chatter coming out of washington then if this is you know a stay. department line in the sand to you and take tock what do you think will
3:08 pm
happen what do you think that signals to to us the consumer or what do you think that signals about u.s. china relations if this all out right man could happen well i think religion says several things about the u.s. trying to relationship which is certainly that if that's only going to amplify and accelerate a division between the u.s. and china which isn't necessarily a good thing but again there is another issue here and that is the issue of the fact that tiktaalik is not this lone actor or this terrible influence in the tech world and everybody else is playing by different set of rules from what i can tell and from all the information that's been presented there is no indication that tick talk is doing anything that other tech companies are not also doing and so the fact that you would say this one is a threat when they do it because of their relations with the chinese government but these companies are not a threat when they do it even though they have a relationship with the u.s. government i think that is problematic and it's certainly problematic because no one is standing up and say no tech companies should be gathering this information
3:09 pm
there is no credible voice pushing back on the idea that tech companies are gathering in mass everything about you if you only if they're chinese that it's bad and that is a problem or the russian face change app that ageing app remember that last year that's right when totally inconsistent message coming from washington about any of any or all of our apps so we'll liberate their brand that's one always appreciate your take an insight thank you for the things. and now to the latest coven 1000 numbers worldwide cases now topping over 13000000 with 569000 reported deaths the top 3 countries with the most confirmed cases the u.s. still leading the way again followed by brazil and now india here in the u.s. cases topping 3000000 with about 135000 reported deaths taking a closer look at this country the charts show the number of new kovac a. he says and deaths reported each day in the u.s.
3:10 pm
since the beginning of the outbreak that's what you're looking at there while the number of deaths are on the client the number of new cases 'd are on an upward trend as states continue to reopen now on july 10th the highest number of new delhi cases reached nearly 70000 and over to the sunshine state and ford up shattering the single day infection record with more than 15000 new cases artist john hardy has more out of miami. florida's coast but numbers continue to surge the state said a record with 15299 new cases july 11th higher than any other state governor rhonda santas says testing for the virus has ramped up statewide so we've tested 2400000 people that is one for every 9 people in the state of florida so i'd be interesting to see what other things have been tested at this level you know in our country in modern times but this is something that as a whole the country's done a lot of test obviously florida you know we're doing
3:11 pm
a lot to go in the last however however many we want to demand has really been high demand for cove in 1000 tests has been so high there been numerous reports of people waiting for hours in line stretching at least a mile long and test results in some cases taking several weeks in miami dade county where the number of cases is now close to 68000 the highest in florida one in 3 people who reportedly took over 1900 test last week tested positive representative ted deutch of florida tweeted this sunday governor to santa spent yesterday raving about all the testing in florida today our state reported over 15000 new cases cases hospitalizations and deaths are all up by over 50 percent in a week stop talking about what we did in march and start telling us your plan for right now to census has argued that local men are needed adding to the debate and consternation about florida's kovan surge to. new world reopened some of its parks
3:12 pm
in orlando over the weekend raising concerns of the place where dreams come true who quickly descended to a nightmare and stand as guests don their mickey mouse ears and face masks and speaking of face masks president truman finally done his over the weekend the 1st time he's done so since the pandemic began during a visit to walter reed medical center despite the trump administration insisting that the show will go on and there are now serious concerns being raised among g.o.p. officials about whether the republican national convention will go on as scheduled in august in jacksonville or whether or not it will shift to an entirely virtual event instead for our t.v. john honey. and outbreak of coronavirus cases on u.s. military bases in japan is now alarming locals and prompted a virtual lockdown there officials and said almost $100.00 u.s. service members have tested positive for the virus as a result the governor of okinawa is now demanding a top u.s.
3:13 pm
military commander take stricter prevention measures. and back here stateside officials in tulsa oklahoma are resuming excavation mass graves after the pandemic put a halt in their search back in march it's been nearly a century after a race riot left as many as 300 black people dead the city plans to dig for graves at 4 different locations later today. and a u.s. convoy in iraq comes under attack an iranian militia group now claiming responsibility we're going to discuss that back and then over at sports regina hamm takes us to the heights where the n.h.l. is making much awaited return and make sure you keep up with all the latest news and anything you might at this point downloading our brand free app portable t.v. you can catch their own of course that will be right back.

3:16 pm
hostilities between the u.s. and iran continue in the proxy land of iraq where a u.s. convoy was attacked in a blast just a day ago so far no casualties have been reported but 2 convoy trucks were destroyed along with any cargo or gear on board now experts believe this came at the hands of iranian backed militias within iraq as a form of retaliation for the january killing of i r g c general custom stolen money this is just days ago a un human rights investigator called the drone strike that killed soleimani arbitrary and unlawful under international law so here to expand on this bubbling hostility former pentagon official mike maloof so mike this convoy attack blast
3:17 pm
nobody was killed was that by chance unlocked i mean was this just meant to instill fear what do you think happened there and who did this. well it now that the iranian backed militias p m f has taken. responsibility clearly they did their. share group. it was it was intentional it was probably and they clear the drivers from the vehicles before they before they blew up the trucks including a gas truck so it was done very well to try to minimize any loss of life so that just tells me they're trying to send a message to the u.s. even though they're reportedly worth some u.s. personnel but they put we were not in a position to engage and that's that's the other. aspect of this and so.
3:18 pm
what will the u.s. do and i think that the u.s. because of sovereignty issues is going to have to leave it up to the prime minister of iraq to do something or say something or come down hard on the group that instigated the attack and he has the floor and this has a little this is upset iran well mike what about that i mean the u.n. investigator made remarks on the drone strike on so many calling it arbitrary and a violation of erakat sovereignty so you just talked about that i mean how is the u.s. going to respond to that and we already know that iraq you know at maybe it was a referendum vote that didn't have any actual tape to what they wanted all u.s. troops and allied forces out of their country. yeah well this is this is a big bone of contention is whether or not i think this is what the. are trying to do is force the prime minister to make that decision and he's not prepared to do
3:19 pm
that yet as far as what the reaction of the u.s. will be to the u.n. statement they're probably going to point out that so lamont he was a known terrorist. you know it's all americans mind them all up and they have every right under our pursuit of. self defense and but again it happened in the sovereign countries and the iraqi government was not secretive about this all along his movements and so the money was going in there to talk about a peace plan at the time so. i think that nothing will come of any u.s. protests like. the u.s. will reject us and mike you've actually come on this show back when we could have a physically present at the death with me you talked about iraq being this proxy land where we would see any connect. oh absolutely and that's why the u.s. remains there still is make it still is going in the bases in the anbar province
3:20 pm
and a region which simply control and trying to has not. withdrawn his argument that he wants u.s. troops saner up for the purpose of a watch iraq as he put it but i hopefully and iraq who wants us that troops to stay in there of course ability purposes and i think that's the dilemma for the iraqi prime minister right now he's under even though he's under serious pressure to. take the americans out there too to invite them to leave here if. the u.s. and is has put sufficient pressure on the prime minister from now and even the sunni factions now that vote to pick up the u.s. was only done by shia did not include some of these are kurds at the time and khatami the prime minister is insisting that the entire parliament take action if there is to be that change and meanwhile like iran has finally come clean about the
3:21 pm
down to cranium passenger jet that happened earlier this year at the height of the u.s. and iran has delayed as they say it was a communication error their own yet so now what about the families or or the the state of ukraine do they have any recourse. well you know they can no. compensation for the families now that iran has made it to the to the problem and that's a tremendous an admission when you think about it because the heretofore the government has been very silent of the taking responsibility for anything in the us and i think the reason for that is that they were concerned that the population was was so disgusted with the government were up. shooting down that their craft and and it did have an impact. so. yeah i think they're going to have to offer compensation to the families and maybe it will be its result of course it's never
3:22 pm
a matter it's an absolutely i mean the lives are changed forever by that error and communication as they call it mike maloof always appreciate your expertise thank you so much. leisure. and black lives matter protests took over key cities across the country in portland protests continued in downtown last night following confrontations with the police just the day before leaving one protester in the hospital after being shot in the head then in st paul the national mother's march took place more than a 1000 people marched there to the state capitol demanding an end to police violence and over in queens new york a pro cop solidarity walk ended with an intense faceoff these demonstrators were marching to support police officers who they believe are being unfairly targeted but as they enter jennifer valley park they were met by about 20 protesters calling to defund police departments. and washington d.c.
