active. and engaged equals betrayal. when so many find themselves worlds apart we choose to look for common ground. in the headlines this wednesday china evolves retaliation after president provokes hong kong preferential treatment and moves to further sanctions chinese officials and businesses. also this hour in the sex crime culture and the u.s. military the brutal murder of a young soldier in texas other service women bravely come forward as commanders are called out for not doing more to crackdown one victim claims they're being silenced . it's happening a lot. in just the amount of control that the military has to keep it kind of quiet is what is surprising. massive protests overnight in jerusalem as angry crowds call

for israel's embattled prime minister to quit over corruption allegations. and banking on having a conscience likewise matter campaigners call on london's financial power houses to pay reparations and fortunes built on the back of slavery. a very warm welcome to the program from all of us here at our teach queue in moscow thanks for joining us this hour. a new day and a new wave of confrontations between the united states and china beijing is weighing up its response to donald trump stripping hong kong of its preferential trade and economic status. u.s. law or militias lee denigrates hong kong's national security legislation threatens
7:02 am
to impose sanctions on china and seriously violates international law and basic rules of international relations it is gross interference in hong kong affairs and china's internal affairs in order to safeguard its own legitimate interests china will make the necessary response and impose sanctions on relevant u.s. personnel and entities. china is not only responding to trump revoking hong kong's trade privileges it's also because he signed off on bipartisan legislation as action chinese officials and business says all stemming back to china's new security law which also affects hong kong has held up and what the details of this special relationship between hong kong and the united states has come to an ant donald trump has officially ended the preferential trade relationship that hong kong has with the united states which has enabled the city to become quite prosperous and will now be treated the same as male in jonah no special privileges

no special economic trip and no export of sensitive technologies in addition to that as you know where. placing massive tariffs and have placed very large tariffs on china 1st time that's ever happened to china from said this will mean one last competitor for the united states now trump also said that officials who are quote extinguishing hong kong's freedom will be slapped with sanctions now he indicated this in the past many have suspected that sanctions would be imposed after months of protest in hong kong against the chinese government on the mainland and some of the new policies.
7:04 am
now donald trump didn't pass up the opportunity to blame china for coded 19 which he referred to as the plague trump also boasted that he is personally responsible for encouraging a number of countries to boycott huawei technology perhaps he was alluding to britain's recent announcement that the country will be boycotting and banning all while away products by 2027 from the end of this year telecoms operators must not buy any 5 to equipment from her wallet and once the telecoms keratin this process it will be the end illegal for them to do so despite the fact that trump called the press conference to address a very serious foreign policy issue he spent quite a bit of time raking over the coals joe biden his rival in the upcoming november presidential election this is biden biden is gone radical left who had listened to joe biden hundreds of thousands of additional lives would have been lost he described the rise of china as quote a very positive development not
7:05 am
a positive development not for us of many observers are wondering if until november every presidential announcement will seem just a little bit like a campaign. new york the u.s. and hong kong face not only. the u.s. military is facing damning allegations of systemic sexual violence and its ranks there is greater scrutiny now since the recent tragic killing of children that's again in the 20 year old vanished in late april her body was found 2 weeks ago and then had apparently complained to her family it that she had been sexually harassed while serving at fort hood in texas a fellow soldier suspected of killing vanessa with a hammer committed suicide as law enforcement tried to arrest him prosecutors also charged another woman believed to be his accomplice but as this heartbroken sister once you know why commanders didn't do more. how do. you i don't. think it was
7:06 am
a joke. at 1st military chiefs dismissed these sexual harassment allegations as unsubstantiated and last week as nationwide outrage grew the u.s. army secretary ordered a review of the command climate and culture at the base of the texas representative and congress confirmed that the allegations of sexual abuse would also be scrutinized. vanessa's killing has led other service women to come forward with similar harrowing stories of sexual assault they've been taking to social media to call out what they describe as ingrained harassment in the u.s. military former soldier trista who was also station in texas talked us through her experience. i got invited to a party off base and was told that it was a birthday party for one of the other girls that was going to start class with us at that same time we had not yet started class i made myself a jury and the other guys wanted to see what i needed and so i passed it around and
7:07 am
when i got it back it didn't seem as though anyone had drink anything but i just kind of thought that was different but didn't really think much of it and kind of felt as though i could feel myself kind of blacking out and then the next morning when i got up to use the restroom and take a shower i realized how much pain i was actually in i was still bleeding and i just you know i kind of was wondering well what happened and i tried really hard to remember and i couldn't the case actually has not developed i went in talk to legal help and they told me after about 4 months of investigating that there was no evidence and that the case would be dropped the pentagon issued a report in april on the mounting number of claims of sexual assault in the u.s. military christa again says plenty of cases are glossed over and that independent investigators are crucial. i saw a lot of females that i actually worked with that experienced harassment and assault and even rape so i just thought it was crazy that this is actually the
7:08 am
culture of it and no one is talking to each other about it so if it is happening and it's happening a lot. in just the amount of control that the military has to keep it kind of quiet is is what is surprising there needs to be an alternative to reporting there needs to be a civilian organization that's not affiliated with with the military whatsoever i believe that there's they do claim that there's resources off base that you can go to but they're still affiliated with the military they're still able to kind of so we've been under the rug to them so i believe just a completely separate organization where women can go and i believe that there shouldn't be any type of punishment for coming forward and speaking out. i just believe that it needs to bring more awareness to the civilian part of you know the community. to think night in jerusalem thought massive anti-government rallies

a place in crowd control measures on protesters who defied orders to follow social distancing regulations demonstrators called on the israeli prime minister to resign as he faces trial on corruption charges is a quick look at how it all unfolded. thank you. how. well thousands of protesters tried to break into the prime minister's residence in belfast street in jerusalem they were carrying torches and they saw trash cans in life and also threw objects the police and journalists it was an event that was
7:10 am
made to coincide with the storming of the best still in forms and it took the police several hours to bring the situation under control now the protesters consider themselves part of what is called the black flag protest movement and they goal is to see the overthrow of the fine minister benjamin netanyahu they are against his continued government many of those who were on the streets of people who had been suffering the effects of public 90 minute bluff their jobs many are out of work but they say it's not only the pandemic itself that the prime minister is not got a grip on the same speed they want to see him gone from power they offer it up with his corruption look at what some of them had to say here's a bit later there's a good chance that the people will realize that there is a leader dragging us to a dangerous place this is why i'm here and i hope that in the coming demonstrations all others will join the protests. all groups must unite every day not just once a week to protest and in the end she will go home. for 3 years i was in the street
7:11 am
to get a partnership. in the debate if you think we have every misstep look like i did i put mr jackson. yeah at one point the police were having to force the key people from the gates of the prime minister's residence in place to some 50 people for disturbing the public order and also throwing objects at the police and. the protesters issued a statement in which they say that the prime ministership at the sponsibility and they called for him to do so by resigning they also say that the common coalition is do nothing to improve the lives of ordinary israelis least of all during the time of coverage 19. london's lucrative financial powerhouses are facing pressure from the black lives matter movement urging them to pay reparations for

past ties to the slave trade campaigners say the firm's fortunes come from colonial oppression and it's time for payback. reports. since the death of george floyd back in may the black lines marked a movement has swept across the rest involves not just rallying against police brutality or institutional racism but challenging symbols of racism to. here in britain the campaign has expanded from toppling statues of slave traders to exposing old banks accused of profiteering from the slave trade in fact some even argue that london's entire financial district was built on the back of slavery and colonial oppression pos directors of high street banking giants including lloyds and even barclays and even the bank of england fortunes from the trades. the city

of london as we know it now would not have been without the slave trade london firms played a crucial role in financing trade with politician colonies that includes funding the transatlantic passage of african captives in appalling conditions to be sold as slaves. and it's not just companies under the microscope that comes as 10 to 20 percent of britain's wealthiest people could be identified as having significant historical links to slavery the practice months away for is how the mirror up to those institutions forcing them to confront the past ties to imperialism while many have apologized. apologies are not enough apologies or stage one of my for that says we knowledge the harm we have caused and we are prepared to enter phase 2 which is a discussion and negotiations about how to repair the suffering that continues to be the legacy of slavery in the caribbean today the amount the british government power to pay off slave owners who were deemed to have property was so knowledge

only repaid in full in 2015 in fact it's the most in equivalent of $17000000000.00 pounds i mean this wasn't a tax is contributed to the abolition of slavery but is that something to be trumpeted is this really something to be regarded with a collective pride and surely it's not all the time for countries aren't descendants of slaves to see the same kind of compensation with banks coughing up the money to pay back the money because the money's not going in the right hand so this is some excuse. to give back this money for them to contribute back to what they took. from the far. more be a good idea for. people but if it's still continue to benefit off those mistakes i was quite open to 2015 so that means all my working life i've been paying them for what i did to my insistence so i was brought in finally coming to terms with

its crimes of colonialism or is this just a way for corporations to brush that past under the carpet or the black eyes massive movement has shown is that britain is out to choose to its imperial posse is out best conflict shot at woodstock r.t. . still to come in the program while america's 2 main parties hog the limelight the so-called 3rd party presidential candidates are also gearing up for november selection we hear from the newly chosen nominee for the green party after the. is you'll be a reflection of reality. in

7:17 am
i'll come back coming u.s. presidential election will effectively be a 2 horse race with only 2 men standing a chance of winning but there are also plenty of so-called 3rd party candidates and the kind of in the running and the green party has just chosen its nominee it's how he hawking's from new york he's a former truck driver and grassroots campaign or whose previously ran for office at every level of government in new york from city councilor to gov hawkins wants to redirect federal funds to boost education and extend health care provisions to all americans is also known for his anti-war anti-nuclear efforts the green party has been putting up candidates in u.s. presidential elections since 1996 as things stand hawkins' will appear on ballots and half of the country states but the party is working on securing. more of a complicated process with each state requiring different signature thresholds to get on the ballot though but perhaps the biggest challenge is getting national air time because the dominant 2 party system won't allow 3rd party candidates on to the
7:18 am
televised debates how can they told us there's a growing up type for electoral our tournaments. the polls show that about 2 thirds of the american people would like to see another major party an alternative to the 2 major parties that we have now and a lot of those people have come to the green party 3rd parties in this country going back to the 18th thirty's as set the agenda it was a liberty party to put the question of slavery on about it was the populous parties the question of monopolies on the public agenda it was the socialist party that put social insurance programs like social security the most popular program out into the public debate so we made our way in the white house we're definitely going to move the debate in a policy agenda in this country the green party represents a very different policies where not you know just democrats who are disgruntled or something we do more on a universal medical system medicare for all we do want serious climate action you
7:19 am
know donald trump caused climate change a hoax but the democrats act as if it's a hoax if you look at their programs we have a serious program to deal with climate change we stand against the u.s. going into countries and tell them who their leader should be we're for peace initiatives deep cuts in military spending and getting serious about this new nuclear arms race. howie hawkins is the current green party nominee but if we look back the green party's presidential nominee and 2016 proved to be a polarizing figure many and the media accuse jill stein of splitting the liberal vote and denting hillary clinton's campaign. tonight the dangers of a 3rd party candidate democratic fear and frustration is growing some seen here is that the votes belong to hillary clinton and that that my votes were stolen from someone else and i think that's an insult to american voters what do you say to those voters who are would worry that by voting for you their progress is that are liberals or democrats that by voting for you they would actually help elect as
7:20 am
politics of fear actually delivered everything that we were afraid of it's better to vote for what you want and make the politicians come to you to settle for what you really don't want even though it's a lesser evil to try and not get which need so we're saying don't you last as long as they were voting those with green cards to you for medicare for all you go for advice and you just go to your phone they've taken the slogan but you're not going to get a green new deal from the democratic party it's a green party position and if you're serious about climate change we're the party you need to see or our appeal to the services organizations the civic organizations is don't let the 2 parties set the agenda do your job open up the debate lisa the candidates who have enough balance to potentially win the electoral college in the presidency which in this election would be. the size of democrats or republicans would be the greens in the libertarians american people deserve to know what all their options are it's a big job this country makes it much harder to get on

a ballot in any other and electoral democracy in the world. at least 150 police officers in the u.s. city of minneapolis have reportedly filed disability claims for injuries suffered during recent riots a police spokesperson has questioned the numbers but acknowledged that a growing number of officers are out of action the city was the flashpoint for the nationwide unrest which erupted after the death of george deployed in may. last month the minneapolis city council approved a plan to dismantle the local police department and replace it with
7:22 am
a new community safety body all the while the city is experiencing a surge and violent crime including a spike in gun violence an attorney representing the minneapolis police officers who filed work related disability claims told us about the dangers they've been facing. the environment following the george for that incident has resulted in the public essentially turning against our city's officers they are being threatened they literally have been instructed in many respects to stand down in not performing certain types of activities for fear of aggravating or agitated in the crowds so they are literally hanging. from performing the normal pleas functions that one would expect from are so used to farm to me appears to be a direct opposition between the finding of the police and the increase in violence when you do not have adequate resources and the officers are not able to do their
