might happen to anyone this is america's lawyer businesses were quick to line up to get their hands on the small business loans from the federal government but the data released last week shows that the entire funding came a free money for corrupt organizations and for the friends of family and politicians. will tell you about the businesses the took advantage of the p.p. the funds and also city council members and other officials across the country have been found guilty of accepting bribes to pad their own pockets later in the show the house and senate unanimously approved a bill that eliminates the statue of limitations for child sexual assault giving survivors hope for seeking justice don't go anywhere america's lower starts right now. many businesses connected to lawmakers to queued sums of money from the p.p.p.
7:31 pm
fund set up by congress and so did the catholic church and there's plenty of corruption to go around and we're going to talk about of get fair and cousins from the trial lawyer magazine fare and i suppose the most agonizing thing about this to me with the catholic church taking in more than $3000000000.00 ok more than $3000000000.00 is because they brought it on themselves with that if they if there's another abuse scandal you know it's never surprise you hear about it every day and i think they've paid someone godley i'm almost 600 i mean the numbers are stuck $600000000.00 and just in payoffs to people who have been victims of abuse and the others and what we want people running that's that's hundreds of $1000000.00 so far just this year yes didn't want to yes and so then you know once the pandemic hit churches had to close down and so the catholic church sent its lobbyists to washington d.c. something that. i didn't even know they had or that they needed but the catholic
7:32 pm
church puts their army of lobbyist millions of dollars worth since i'm to d.c. before the 1st relief package gets passed and they said make sure we can get some of this money everybody knew lots of money was coming catholic church wanted it because they needed it as you said because they had to pay off all of these assaults and they continue to pay right so basically taxpayers gave them money to pay off their assault cases from these from these 'd bishops and such that are still in the business either still doing business what was a pope for a pope francis says to to whatever he says listen you just need to go in for 20 years you need to make amends with god not you need to go to prison for what you've done you just need to make amends we've got i mean that's still the mentality and we pay them. $3000000000.00 probably more right that we know of and that's the that's the scariest part of it is that that's all that we know of the reports say
7:33 pm
that the real number is likely much much higher than that but it is very important understand that they spent millions to get these billions and they are the ones the catholic churches lobbyists who made it to where they were eligible and other religious organizations in this country were eligible for these t.t.t. loans you were supposed to not get him if you had more than 500 employees they created the exception for religious institutions they should not have gotten any of this they didn't need it you have some churches that got their hands on this money one of them particularly the just spent 70000000 on a new glass cathedral and they waste money this money is not going to be spent on helping the homeless or helping the poor or feeding the hungry this is for their own greed their own selfishness and their own corruption is what they're using it for well when you go to italy and you see these monstrosity buildings that they've built there in the vatican and you realize that's been paid for by $20.00 here and
7:34 pm
$20.00 or people all over the world it's it's really kind of a sad story i mean it all and honestly as you walk through those buildings or the vatican and you see gold everywhere 'd and you know pictures a little male naked chair everywhere i mean you know you go what's what is that they're not connecting with that the rest of the american public thinks this is wrong and i think that is this story gets out there thing in the think this is wrong what why are we giving this why are taxpayers paying for church business anyway you say yeah at a time when we have real small businesses that needed this money that are having to close their doors for good you know they were employing people in the community providing a good or a service to that community the real you know politicians always tell small businesses are the backbone of this country they let them die because they. not influenced by these lobbyist gave billions to pay off sexual assault lawsuit. retired military generals pleaded guilty to molesting his daughter throughout her
7:35 pm
childhood to facing the consequences until 30 years after having you know the reason this story seems seems important so many levels but i mean here was a retired 2 star army general that made it through the system participated in the system for 30 years ok and they slapped him they didn't even slap him on the hand medivac they in military court he was given a free pass saying there's a 5 year statute of limitations on this because it for their right to this story kind of represents everything wrong with not just the military court system on this issue but with the federal court system on the issue of assault this man's daughter had been molested all through the eighty's all through the i think the early 70 or late seventies as well all through her childhood and this man in the military 2 star general nobody ever suspected a thing but he would go home and he was an absolute monster an abuser to this young
7:36 pm
woman who is now 49 years old she brought the case and said listen i cannot keep silent anymore we need to do this as you said military court says no you can't i'm sorry but there was a 5 year statute of limitations you should have filed this lawsuit when you were over 10 years old or welding of unripe overwhelming of and the other thing that so probably his wife said his wife knew it happened well this wife knew it happened and you know the real zinger his wife is still with him yeah they're still married and if you look at all you know most all the time on these abuse cases and all the time but i'd say the vast majority of you will have a wife that knows something's going on but she has an inability to almost think for herself and say we've got to get out of here not for me but for the child but i suppose she found the status of being a 2 star generals wife so. so inviting that she stayed with this guy even though it was very clear had been molesting this child since she was 3 years old and you know
7:37 pm
so. to me the military this idea of a 5 year statute of limitations on this type of case in the military is ridiculous and so there's obviously you can go to non military court which they've done in virginia but the very very idea that the military gives passed to this cat well and he he ended up i think spending only 18 months running prison he as soon as they actually sentenced him when he pleaded guilty and said ok yes i did it he was released from prison on parole or not parole but basically under supervision but allowed to go back to his home you know he's going to have this supervised release whatever it is they want to call it but essentially you're free you're free to a certain extent for years and years of abuse that this woman had to live with and still has to live with and now she gets to live with the added fact of knowing that there is rarely any justice for women in her situation you know wife wife is still with me and that's without phones so remarkable working americans are struggling to
7:38 pm
pay their bills during the pandemic but congress just opened up their checkbooks to give the military industrial complex another $740000000000.00 and at the same time they did it the war pimps the war pigs i like to call them the they want to war all the time the liz cheney the dick cheney crowd who now has become a democrat crowd where you have democrats buying into this whole story we have to stay in afghanistan forever and why because the same democrats that voted the we're not going to pull out of afghanistan follow the money on those democrats go ahead pick it up right we have this democrat controlled the house armed services committee last week came up with a new budget for the military that they want to get passed $740000000000.00. years at a time when 31 percent of americans weren't able to pay their mortgages this month
7:39 pm
30 percent last month couldn't pay because we're in a pandemic they keep telling us there's not enough relief funds we can't give you another stimulus check we can't keep increasing unemployment it'll make you needy but we're going to write a $740000000000.00 blank check to the military industrial complex to the pentagon because when it comes to war when it comes to the military there is always money to be found when it comes to helping people you know sorry love into a latte were really lands the media the media is so much a part of the story it's almost like we have a whole generation of people of these young journalists coming out of journalism school i suppose well i don't know if they do have journalism school anymore but they're coming out of journalism school and you know they've been raised on an entire generation of news that surrounds glee what's happening to the actors in glee who is who is justin bieber marrying today or who's you hang around with so
7:40 pm
you have these jerks i call them journalists like they are journalists these are kids i promise you would not have made it through journalism school 25 years ago and it's their lack of their lack of being able to look at a case like this and say this is what we should be reporting the military has $740000000000.00 that they're given away that oh by the way is 15 times higher than the russia military it's what half a dozen times higher than the chinese military and there's nothing even close we can't even use the weapons we have we have a 1000 of everything and the military at one point was saying we got too much here but the democrats the democrats i love this they used to be you and i would talk about a story like this we talk about republicans now it's the democrats the democrats have bought into this war forever. or you know. look we're going to get out of germany were taken $10000.00 troops out of germany which seems like
7:41 pm
a good idea we're taking our troops out of afghanistan which seems like a good idea but the weapons industry they don't like it and now the democrats who make big money from them they don't like it either one no and as you pointed out a lot of it is because the media gets this money too you know these checks may not all go directly to the media some of them do by the way oh yeah pentagon does pay hollywood they pay television producers to make these pro-military themes but that's a story for another day but this is a good story by the way we need to do absolutely but this money goes to these defense contractors who then as we've talked about a 100 times turn that money to m.s.n. b.c. to c.n.n. and say we're going to advertise products that your viewers can even purchase yeah but we're buying your loyalty with this model laris missile ok so you have boeing mcdonnell douglas advertising missiles are you going to go up by a missile no the reason m s n a b c is covering the story the reason they're doing the advertisement they're getting a ton of money from the ad business c.n.n. making a ton of money from the military complex that's why these idiots won't even cover
7:42 pm
a story as important as glenn greenwald but he's on their track yes he's going i think it's the best coverage i've seen of this problem so you know we can't expect anything from the media we have to go other places to get stories like this don't we absolutely fair and cousins thank you for joining me thank you for coming up local officials are supposed to address the needs of their districts yet many elected members they've been found guilty of using their political influence for sheer profit and that's making its way throughout the united states at a pretty good rate that more when we come back. i. that's right we've answered. still longer recession to get the recession.
7:43 pm
or. depression this will last a few years you know. my social class. people are in poverty. if you're born into a poor family. born into a minority family if you're born into a family that only has a single parent that really constrains your life chances people die. generational poverty. it's a tough fight every day to meet your needs and the needs of your family. is you'll be via reflection of reality.

a wave of city hall corruption cases across the country exposed america's pay to play problem ortiz brazil joins me to talk about how politicians sell out taxpayers for personal gain no surprise there brazil you know we've seen that's an age old story but it seems to be getting worse you're based in los angeles where city officials have been charged with federal crimes what can you tell me about what's going on out there. well l.a. city councilman jose was are has been charged with one count of conspiring to violate the racketeer influenced and corrupt organization act better known as rico for allegedly selling the city to several real estate developers including the wealthy head of a chinese company seeking to build a $77.00 story skyscraper downtown in exchange for approving or stalling large building projects we thought reportedly received more than one and a half $1000000.00 in bribes and perks including campaign contributions lavish
7:46 pm
dinners and stacks of casino chips the city councilman has represented the 14th district covering east los angeles and downtown l.a. since 2005 and has chaired the planning and land use management committee which he was forced to step down from in the wake of this investigation if convicted weeds are faces up to 20 years in federal prison you know to me this this is a broader involvement than just this one case for example when when you had the russians start spending money in the u.k. this they started spreading money everywhere around the u.k. and you started seeing these types of corruption cases evolve you're now seeing studies where the mexican cartel is starting to spread out money through parts of california and you know if you take a look at what's happened in mexico with their influence with that money look these are politicians the. gets sucked into that more and more we're going to see this is a good example chinese came in they wanted to build 'd they you know they don't
7:47 pm
fuss but don't need to follow our laws they'll spread money around where they want to spread money around and that's what we're seeing a big big way it seems like in california right now we're in the other l.a. officials involved in this this case. yeah well councilman we are it is accused by the f.b.i. of being the mastermind mind behind the scheme at least 4 other people have agreed to plead guilty in connection with the case including former l.a. city council men mitchell englander who stepped down from the city's governing body during the investigation and englander has been accused of obstructing the inquiry accepting a paper cup filled with $10000.00 in cash from a real estate business person taking thousands more in cash and of accepting as court services englander also sat on the city council's planning committee and served as a reserve officer with the l.a.p.d. he faces up to 5 years in prison so you can see how widespread this problem is yeah
7:48 pm
well it's widespread i can't again you're seeing more and more stories where they're drawing parallels and for example 3rd world countries where there is there is no police department it's not there is no politician that's not the judiciary is corrupt the media is corrupt that's what money does when it starts being spread around in a big way that's what's getting ready to happen in california with some of the cartel money being spread around and i got to tell you the same things happen in places like new jersey in atlanta in recent weeks similar city hall corruption cases have popped up in those places new jersey and atlanta how are politicians peddling influence in exchange for money what's their new game. yes that's the end of june current and former public officials at opposite ends of the country have been charged in sweeping corruption cases exposing the willingness of politicians to sell the authority of their public office for personal game. these cases in san francisco atlanta and new jersey involve shady back door deals with envelopes paper
7:49 pm
bags and cups of money delivered in restaurants parking lots political fundraisers campaign headquarters and even in hotel bathrooms and it's on both sides of the aisle you have republican and democratic public officials taking bribes and engaging in fraud money laundering tax evasion and more in exchange for granting contracts and jobs to those who pay to play these cases are very similar government contracts are supposed to go to the companies that do the best work for the lowest price since taxpayers are the ones footing the bill but there is not enough oversight and there are far too many loopholes that give way to this ramping corruption. politics and corruption has long been a story in l.a. but i just think there's another aspect to it to where it's almost reaching that level where when we analyze the lack of law in a 3rd world country we're kind of seen similarities right now here in the u.s. thank you for joining me ok. thanks frank. one of the few unanimous decisions by
7:50 pm
the house and senate recent passage of dawn is law here in florida it's going to seek justice for survivors of child sex abuse for years to come legal journalist molly barrows is with me to talk about it tell us for small who was done and why the call was done as well how does it all fit together she spearheaded this donna hedrick is from orlando and she said she was abused by her choir teacher 2 weeks after her 15th birthday and this was in the early 1970 s. she didn't tell anybody about it for 40 years and when she finally came forward she suspected that there were other victims of this teacher up to 5 other victims and she couldn't do anything with her allegations or accusations because the statute of limitations had passed so she started a petition and basically got 30000 signatures they got the attention of ford with bipartisan support and passed this law and bill rather than the owners of the exam oh yeah as soon. other statues the past the country and it's just the logical
7:51 pm
solution to it but what does what is law what does this law do for survivors of sexual abuse but what gives them an option and a voice because it is such a common tragedy actually to happen in this country and sadly most of them never really even reported it all or when they do finally report it other states like florida until recently had statute of limitations that kept them from being able to come forward and what we do know also about predators to use children is that they continue to do it and if you have one child a potential reported or a person that's grown up and could report it you could be part of it preventing this person from abusing other children as well so this is going to give victims of voice and an option when and if they are abused and are ready to come forward when this opened up in other states the catholic church got a new 4400 cases as such will be used because it got you know it empowered people say yeah i'm going to i'm going to go ahead and do something about it and the impact was startling so this is a great this is
7:52 pm
a big victory isn't it well it is a big victory it'll be interesting though because the law only applies to often says that have been committed since july 1st when this new law went into effect so you know those kids that have been abused as minors up until then are still subject to the statute of limitations but from here on out it's going to give victims and victim advocacy groups a lot more power you know they're going to have some some some meat behind what they their threats the few other to be able to pursue charges against these predators and perhaps take them off the streets for good but there's still a long way to go and it's just unbelievable as you know our own ken lambert is handle and human trafficking cases and it is just pervasive worldwide but the vast majority of children that are abused it happens before the age of 18 most of them are girls and it happens that they're being a molested or abused by someone that they know either an acquaintance or a family member that human trafficking. there were cases that were working all over the country now it's an eye opener because you start realizing that there's so much
7:53 pm
the it's so organized that you start seeing the internet sites that know exactly what they're doing exactly that they're part of trafficking the big hotels they know they're part of the trafficking the airport if you go to atlanta airport now finally they were busted they understood exactly what was going on when they saw people coming through traffic so now you hear the announcements if you suspect trafficking steak in place report something but this is the i think these these human trafficking cases that we're working are going to open up a whole a whole new consciousness of how this takes place it's not just isolated abuse most of it's not in what you're saying is perpetuation of more cases of isolated to be this as well as the trafficking because it starts on an individual basis as well a lot of these victims of human trafficking were groomed for it either by their
7:54 pm
current abuser or maybe by a previous cities or again somebody in their family just. you know exactly who is now setting up scenes with a paralegal bell so that's why abstain victims if they're potentially are more in the state of florida can come forward but isn't that an example of how badly we drop the ball we take this animal predator epstein he's an animal predator there's no question he's got all the animal predator qualities of having and so the the judge has the right to put him away forever instead he does nothing to to abstain he literally lets him go to jail when he wants to go to jail for a period of you know several months and everybody around him got away with it and everybody around him just walked away because of the way that we see political influence i'm sure was part of the story too you know there's part of the reason that she didn't have the right to do a lot of things she did to now. because of the political influence we just don't see the importance of what's happening here right in front of our eyes molly thank
7:55 pm
you for joining me ok thanks pat. finally tonight some good news the generic drug cartel in america is beginning to face justice finally as the d.o.j. has started to crack down on price gouging and collusion between these drug makers they're all working together to inflate prices we've known that but finally we're seeing the d.o.j. actually do something about it last week the d.o.j. filed charges against generic drug maker glynn mark pharmaceuticals for conspiring to fix drug prices and keep them artificially high for american patients for years reporters have been writing about the collusion and price fixing taken place between generic drug makers in america but the justice department has been slow to bring charges against these companies and we know why because it's political influence it's money that they've spread around but now the public is hyper focused on the cost of prescription drugs it's become an issue that can't be ignored any
7:56 pm
more by the apartment of justice or the white house or congress glenn mark isn't alone in their scheme to keep their prices high and they certainly aren't going to be the only company that the d.o.j. files charges against but if the d.o.j. really wanted to do something to stop the processing they'd be looking to name brand drugs in the big pharma giants who've been ripping off consumers for decades just because they can because they can get away with it because nobody goes to jail because they don't look like criminals they look like businessmen in we treat them differently that's all for tonight find us on twitter and facebook at facebook dot com slash r t america's lawyer you can watch all our t. america programs on direct t.v. channel 321 and also stream them live on you tube be sure to check out our tease new portable app where you can watch it. all over all your favorite shows are all my pap and tony and this is america's neuer where every week we tell you the
