internet traffic have a lot to get to so let's get started. now despite growing tensions between the united states and china on trees are actually making progress on the trade front well this is according to representatives from each respective country who took part in these recent trade talks this development comes just months after the u.s. and china signed phase one of a massive trade deal but will the countries be able to come together when it comes to the latest disagreements over technology which now includes a fight over the popular optic talk free to love and joining me to discuss rachel what's the latest on the trade front where just 10 days ago we heard that schedule negotiations were broadly canceled the now we're learning that there actually was a phone call carried on monday night between representatives for the u.s. and china now we've got statements from both sides and it's interesting to see the u.s. 'd trade representative said both sides see progress and are committed to taking the steps necessary to ensure the success of the agreement then china's ministry of commerce also released a statement which they said the 2 sides agreed to create conditions and atmosphere
4:31 am
to continue pushing forward toward the implementation of this trade deal of the major topics here were the protection of intellectual property rights and also china's commitments to purchasing significantly more products from the u.s. now this call was largely seen as a way to clear the air between the 2 countries to talk about how phase one of the trade deal has been implemented and then also to look at setting the stage for negotiations to go into phase 2 deal well rachel or seem to be a lot of remaining disagreements on the table from from both sides when it comes to social media platforms or is also on the tick technology front you mentioned intellectually until actual property theft what's going on there where you're really seeing this latest fight over to talk and we chat ramp up in recent weeks and it seems to be sort of the last frontier in the trade war that we're talking about now if we take a look at the timeline here where you see that following president trump executive order to ban the platforms earlier this month ago. group of we chat users in san
4:32 am
francisco filed a lawsuit against the u.s. government on friday and then tick-tock filed a lawsuit against the u.s. on monday now both of which argue that they were denied due process rights and that the companies were not given the time to respond to claims of national security concerns now as we know there are tens of millions of users on these 2 platforms just here in the u.s. and we chat users have said specifically that because platforms like facebook and instagram are already banned in china they use we chat specifically to communicate with their friends and family there so if that platform is banned and taken away then they could largely suffer from it absolutely i mean the phase one trade deal was signed just a month ago everybody hailed the deal it was a huge deal there are still several concerns about the future of that because again president not too long ago said he wasn't having any talks with beijing now they had a phone conversation regarding the phase one trade deal we're in a lot of near what's going on right now one of the biggest concerns moving forward
4:33 am
is that election because as we know president trump has really campaigned on this policy of being tough on china now during a recent interview with fox news he actually said that he is looking at decoupling from trying altogether and cutting off work with the country now take a listen to what he said on the next revolution with steve hilton here. we were doing better then we've never done with joy and i was all set to rock n roll and then we got hit with this. situation but you know you are just going to question because you're going to push it what would you be doing for this is good but then you risk the 2nd question would you ever just to go not do business with china because you know we don't have to. now there is still hope right now that there is going to be a phase 2 of this trade deal at some point but as we know we're still going with the current mars pandemic now we're dealing with all these new accusations from the u.s. and national security concerns so those will likely play a role in what that final deal and being especially if president or vice president
4:34 am
biden takes takes office after a term we don't know where it's going to go from here many people say that he won't be as tough as trump other say he'll be more predictable so with all this back and forth and it's been years that we've seen this going on now president trump said that he will be tougher on china so he's continuing to do so and all that promise and that's an election year so he's he's running on that platform to artie's rachel blevins thank you for being with us thank you. for more we're joined by bilbo's co-host christine and c.e.o. of euro pacific capital peter schiff peter let's start with you and despite washington's hostility toward china it really seems like president xi jinping is keen to really try to deescalate the rising tensions i think he wants to ensure american companies continue doing business with china how is he even planning to achieve this. well i think he knows that american companies who are now doing business in china want to continue doing business in china and i think he also
4:35 am
knows that the last the president front needs is another problem between now and the election so i think the chinese realize that if they play their cards right they probably won't have any additional problems to deal with between now and then well absolutely and that's something the. keeping a close eye on christie what do you make of these trade talks and these discussions is there really anything new actually being discussed are these both sides really just tiptoeing around each other there's nothing really new it is as rachel just said everything that we're hearing all the rhetoric is very generic very polite statements being made by both sides but this is the 1st very high level trade talks that we've had between the u.s. and china since the signing of the phase one trade deal in january pretty much restating the fact that the trade is the only remaining bright spot in an area of constructive dialogue in the crumbling superpower relationship between u.s. and china so now these talks come just as after president published his reelection agenda that he vowed to further hack away at the ties with beijing by offering tax
4:36 am
credits for american manufacturing firms to repatriate their companies. and to ban u.s. companies from federal government contracts if they outsource over to china so while both sides are pretty much exchanging and do words at this point there is a sense that any communication at this point is better than no communication but both sides have agreed to create conditions to further implement this deal indicating that the u.s. also still wants to keep this deal on the table so while economic and national security issues they're still being argued over trade remains the only only bright spot in the broader relationship between u.s. and china as china is continuing to purchase american ag record volumes right now and we saw these numbers when china promised in committed to purchasing the agriculture and already even before the coronavirus started they said it was going to be the world saw it is nearly impossible because it was so much money going into it and what they're saying that they're purchasing them are we even close to that
4:37 am
kristie no absolutely nowhere close to that to the record amounts promised by china still remains the largest consumer in the world right now even with the man down worldwide from the coronavirus china is still the only large consumer of american larger. consumer of consumer electronics so no matter what even if even if america says that china has failed to uphold the terms of the trade one agreement as he just said in its previous they meant the entire world was hit with something unexpected such as the coronavirus which china is claiming as a force majeure it was an unexpected natural disaster that hit the entire world thus making them unable to uphold the terms of the u.s. and china trade agreements from phase one well and it seems this current coronavirus really helped make tensions much much worse between the 2 countries as we heard trump say that things were getting better between the 2 countries one could say peter it seems like both countries are trying to hold this faith one on
4:38 am
paper but nothing is really being done to enforce it is that a problem. well 1st of all i think that phase one agreement was just a face saving deal by trump because he couldn't deliver the substantive deal that he promised so he brought out phase one just to pretend he had accomplished something but i said at the time he really hadn't accomplished anything it was much ado about nothing looked at chinese are going to buy from americans what the chinese need and if they need agriculture and if they can get a good deal from us they'll buy it from us otherwise we're going to buy it someplace else and there's nothing that we can do to solve it the real problem is going to be when the chinese stop buying our bonds or really start selling our bonds which they should already be doing and probably are doing and where the dollar collapses so americans can no longer afford to buy chinese products yes when the dollar crashes and i think that's going to happen the chinese will buy a lot more american agriculture because americans are going to buy a lot less because the prices are going to go up i mean
4:39 am
a lot of stuff is going to be shipped out of this country and americans are going to have to do without a lot of things that they you know because of the having but we're headed for a real crisis i mean the problem isn't china taking advantage of us it's that we've actually been able to take advantage of them by. exporting are overvalued currency for their products and i think the ability of the united states to continue to do this is coming to an end i mean we're pretty so much money the deficits are so high that the world is going to finally lose confidence of the dollar which is something that should have happened a long time ago but getting back to my earlier point what trump is really concerned about now is getting reelected and the only thing he has going for him is the stock market he wants to continuously claim that the high stock market is proof of how great the economy is even though the stock market is only strong because the economy is weak but he doesn't want to do anything to make the stock market go down between now and the election and so he certainly doesn't want to risk rattling the
4:40 am
cage that china or doing anything that might make some of these big tech stocks that do a lot of businesses china that are very heavily representative in the indexes go down so i think trump is going to be crossing his fingers and hoping for the best between now and election day mainly what he's running on now the markets and he knows that the u.s. china relations drive the markets up and down those headlines so he is being very strategic and careful about this kristie can the u.s. actually do anything to enforce a phase one or was the entire dream deal just just to show like peter said while the u.s. can obviously do something and china is very alert to the risks that the poses in which they threaten to freeze the banking sector out of the u.s. dollar now we talked about this multiple times this is a very nuclear option to cut china out of the swifts network as centrally just choking off its liquidity however that will be like mutually assured destruction between the 2 because while it hurts china if china cannot make any dollar purchases it can't buy any u.s.
4:41 am
ad products nor any other phase one covered products that may be crucial to trump's reelection as peter does mention so the u.s. is looking at a very limited actions against china on the financial front but all of that being said with a little over 2 months to go until the elections the trumpet ministration is expected to continue. push a very aggressive effort in terms of china's foreign policy and most of it is has going to be very has will likely have very little real impact on china because look at the phase one implementation that's just not going to happen at all and there's no enforcement so and no one's looking at it so why do anything at all to rattle the markets and as for phase 2 negotiations that doesn't look like is going to happen because all those core issues that he decided to push over onto the back burner all of that all those bullet points they have quietly just fell off a drop in the process doesn't look like we'll be seeing a face to rio anytime to go ahead in. your lives never to be a phase 2 i said that when we had phase one that was the only phase that we're ever
4:42 am
going to complete and in fact even before kobe 19 came around nobody was talking about phase 2 but i mean once covert came in all talks of phase 2 completely disappear so they don't even have a pretense anymore that there's more common especially with this new tech war that we're seeing between the 2 countries peter schiff c.e.o. of euro pacific capital and bill less co-host christine thank you both for being with us today thank you. time now for a quick break but stay here because when we come back with most americans working from home and students participating in online learning we ask our panel does the u.s. have the internet prosody to handle it we have a panel discussion next as we go to break here the numbers at the close i . told.

this school year is looking very different for many students with home computers and laptops taking the place of the classroom to the crown of us well it's likely that millions of kids around the world will be participating in some sort of online learning what's raises the question can they enter handle it r t s alex mahela that's how the story. this is what school will look like for millions of kids for the foreseeable future. coming up even with safety measures in place in classrooms many parents are choosing to keep their children at home while the coronavirus remains a threat so along comes a virtual learning children around the globe will be using computers at home to keep up with their school curriculum with many getting the taste of a future in the past few months a number of difficulties have a reason from kids not logging in on time for class to lagging internet speeds and what we witnessed recently zoom links crashing on what was for many the 1st day of virtual school and the fact that millions of students will be using the internet at
4:46 am
the same time as their parents who are now working from home the world wide web has become more important than ever the question is can our broadband and wireless networks handle the burden presented by the coronavirus the increase in remote internet usage means more wireless traffic in fact since 1000 measures kicked in u.s. wireless networks have experienced an increase of 20 percent in mobile voice and data traffic in terms of mobile voice working from home means using a cell phone for most today less than 40 percent of homes in the states have landlines as for broadband access not all internet is created equally in the us rural areas are in the tory asli bad when it comes to connectivity creating the issue of inequality for urban versus rule workers and students looking globally the problem becomes even. more evident in china this past april mobile data speeds were down by 40 percent while average speeds went up in the us and then there's the
4:47 am
question of affordability america's neighbor to the north canada has some of the highest mobile data costs in the world canada ranks $209.00 out of $228.00 countries with the average cost of $1.00 gigabyte of mobile data being $12.55 on the other end of the spectrum is india where the same costs $0.09 when it comes to broadband the stats are a bit different canada ranks better than the us in price and while the u.s. broadband speeds are going up the price is going down talking about speed the u.s. ranks 15th when it comes to average broadband speed connections with taiwan leading the way this is where global disparity can clearly be seen taiwan has an average connection speed of $85.00 megabytes per 2nd while war torn yemen takes a last place at a barely connected sabean of 0.38 months however 5 g. promises to eliminate some issues while bringing about new innovations at least on
4:48 am
the mobile side is 20 times faster than the current 4 g. technology and experts say it will fundamentally change the way that we gauge with content meaning virtual learning will become something very different from what we know today something that people are very excited about it is virtual reality or a mix reality and i think that's going to make a big difference especially in schooling and trainee but it's going to take a while for people to create content before we get there there will certainly be some bumps on the road however for now with kovan 1000 still very much a reality the internet it's not only allowing millions to work and keep the economy moving but it is also allowing our children to get the education that they need while staying healthy for boom bust i'm alex milo. as alex. just mention there the school year kicks off for millions of students around the country and around the world and there are major questions about whether internet infrastructure is even up to the task will in fact just
4:49 am
a day goes on reported outages just as students and teachers were attempting to hold online classes well this coupled with millions more parents who will be working from home and it leads us to the question can our current internet handle this load so we go deeper on the subject. of an investigative journalist ben swan and president of intel and cyber security analyst todd shipley gentlemen thank you for being with me today ben let's start with you break this down for us what happened with zoom on monday and why is this such a big deal. well it's a big deal in that you have a company like zoom that obviously has been growing in prominence over the last few months and they just couldn't handle the load of parent lee other they were hit with on monday oh apparently around 8 40 am on the east coast they said that they had essentially a blackout where users could no longer get online they could not get into their meeting rooms they could not attend classes it lasted for about 2 to 3 hours and then zoom says they were able to kind of reset the cloud they got everything working again but i think there's a bigger issue here than just whether or not zoom was able to handle this load it's
4:50 am
the fact that when we talk about internet we really have 2 things we're talking about we have internet service and the ability for internet providers to be able to essentially share a band with that everyone can get on and use but we also have the issue that so many of these users are being kind of funneled into only about 2 or 3 companies that provide the teleconferencing tools that you need to do a classroom setting to do virtual work setting xoom is one of those companies but when you have so few companies you have millions of people who become reliant on those companies i'm not sure that's necessarily a recipe for either increased education or a good workplace environment going forward absolutely we're seeing more issues with the internet and because of more internet traffic as well and still seeing these high costs this obviously raises a series of questions here including whether or not so much of the country can
4:51 am
depend on it just like one or 2 companies to provide these teleconferencing services for so many teachers students and even workers. well that's true and i think ben is correct with the understanding of the populace is that there's one or 2 companies is actually more companies out there that are providing this kind of service but soon became popular because everybody heard about it you know go to meetings has been around for years as well as other companies microsoft's teams is . been trying to compete in this market too so there's other companies that are out there but it's the popularity of one that caused the problem everybody assumed because it was so good at providing the service during a period of time that wasn't necessarily. that there was bandwidth for it but when they all jumped on a one time zoom couldn't handle it so i mean we have to look at what the companies are providing and whether they can actually realistically in the background provide the service that they're actually seeing they can provide and ben's right i mean
4:52 am
there is just one or 2 that everybody goes to but there's more companies out there that are providing this kind of service and they need to be looked at absolutely and that's probably why because of the traffic that we're seeing especially with school starting i mean we just had summer and so technically they were necessarily students weren't really learning from home then there's a broader issue at play here and that's the issue of the cost of us and not being compared to other countries very expensive where does the u.s. fall in terms of cost. yeah in terms of cost we're not doing that well there is a fact a new ranking that was just done in the u.k. that shows the u.s. is ranked about 104th in the world in terms of cost so our pricing is not good here now at the same time the cost of broadband has gone down over the last year but it's gone down over the last year just about everywhere so it is expensive here in the united states to have and there's been a lot of talk as you know sarah about the possibility of you know creating it as a public utility and moving the internet to a public utility talk about whether or not people have
4:53 am
a right to internet and therefore this should be subsidized by the government a lot of questions about that but you know i think there's also another issue there's a price issue there's the issue of the number of people out there but i have a niece and nephew who just started doing the zoom classes and my wife was with them on their 1st day and it was a disaster she was talking about the fact that they couldn't hear the teacher or the teacher couldn't hear them the teacher can't talk to all the students at the same time they're giving out assignments it's like the whole process is a mess and the idea that just because someone's on the other side of the screen it's virtually like being there apparently it's not really it's very different i mean different than online courses before right when you have something just not using right line because now you're having video conferencing with one teacher talking 220-3040 sometimes more students like that got to be pretty difficult and imagine those students being in the 1st grade or the 2nd grade where they have trouble just getting understanding any concepts at all and you're trying to
4:54 am
individually work with all those students through a computer screen is that so that i'm paying attention right thing still trying to really hard to say. when it comes to the internet though the speeds that is the advent of 5 g. technology it's supposed to dramatically shift that but what the u.s. now pushing out companies like huawei which claims to be so far ahead of their competition how will this cause the u.s. to fall further behind in terms of internet service. well i mean you have to look at a service like the one on one in l.a. i mean. it's a great freeway vince huge but you put enough people on it and it's going to come to a standstill and that's the problem we have in the united states right now do we have the bandwidth to put everybody online all the same time this is certainly a test of the environment that we've not had before where the bandwidth in the united states is being saturated with so many people going online at the same time and that's what happened with zoom everybody jumped on the east coast in we they
4:55 am
were unable to deal with it and so it doesn't matter how fast we go the 5 g. will change things dramatically because we've got speed but just because you got a ferrari that you can drive really really fast if you're driving on a dirt road it's not going to go very far well special we're talking about rural areas who are already struggling with the internet capacities as ben you mentioned . yeah they absolutely are and was going to say and put todd said about the ferrari is also true about his 101 example 2 you can get a ferrari on the one to one and you know go anywhere that's true with doc and traffic but let's go husband saw that cyber security expert todd shipley thank you both so much for your expertise than it. on the man on the brand new portable t.v. which is available on smartphones. t.v. can also be downloaded on the newer model of samsung. t.v. .
