larry sabato founder of the center for politics at the university of virginia joins us with his crystal ball predictions for the fall on this in politics. welcome to politicking on larry king trump and biden are ramping up their campaign efforts are some voters still casting ballots are some still undecided for this i'm joined by larry sabato founder and director of the center for politics at the university of virginia last month he launched a new live web series called suburbs o's crystal ball america votes he is in charlottesville. larry bob woodward's book on trump is out and trump has admitted
2:32 am
he knew how bad this was way back but he didn't want to scare anybody so my question is why did he talk against masks if he knew how bad it was you know and january 1st when we were looking at the election i think trump was a substantial favorite to the economy was great we weren't at war people had got used to the way he was. he knew the pandemic was going to cause him he almost. he did if this is going to be a major problem and he decided to pretend it wasn't going to be a major problem and obviously. 100000 deaths it's a major problem. why do you think he admitted it now i can't give you a rational explanation for most of what donald trump does you know he should just
2:33 am
start or. this new story is worse than the original story most people can understand the president would make it could have move a bad judgment but in this case he's basically saying well i lied to you hoping it was in your best interest but it was certainly in my best interest so he looks worse today than he looked 2 days before the book came up absolutely why bob woodward you know well but is it because it's a hot piece of. what effect do you think it will have on the election. it's going to bring the pain demick back to the center of the debate we've lost that for a while because of all the racial unrest that had taken the place of the pandemic but this is going to put the pandemic back on trump's plate i don't see explains
2:34 am
that. he doesn't want this we're in the last some of the election and naturally biden is going to use it every day he should use it at every day. you business of anything like this right larry never. never never well there's been nothing like trump in our entire history that's what i mean this or. this is more in stream than the normal so yes this is something that i just can't explain i can't explain really other than hillary clinton how he ever won. if the votes were counted today would biden win absolutely it wouldn't be particularly close today i realize that things can change but how do you get around a pandemic i just don't see it and the economic problems how do you get around them
2:35 am
in 7 weeks when he's counting on law and order right and scaring people in the suburbs. yes and there's no the butler. well it works some places it may work in wisconsin though you don't see it in the polls yet. you and i lived through richard nixon and we remember his use of the law and order issue which did work for him but he wasn't the income but you know the natural question for people to ask is why isn't donald trump handling the problem now he's the incumbent he's in charge he's saying. elect me so we can you we can have more law and order but you are responsible for all of them right now he's running like he's not in office. he always likes to be pretend that he's not the incumbent it just doesn't work he's been in office for almost 4 years.
2:36 am
what do you make of the flack now about him as the calling soldiers who have passed away in war loses on suckers. that the trump white house has done a pretty good job fighting that because they produced 10 or 12 people who were there with the with the president in france who claim he never said any such thing however i think most of us realize given his pattern of attacking john mccain and his pattern of calling people losers and suckers and he's clearly said it before when when he and his chief of staff john kelly visited kelly's son's grave his son was killed in war. trump said something very similar to john kelly's so you can easily imagine those words coming out of trump's now and that makes it tough for him to refute this and it infuriates people. yeah one week that
2:37 am
one surviving member of the family said well he signed up for it yes excited up for an insider guy he signed up to fight for its country in oh but as he gets away with things larry that none of the politicians you've interviewed over decades could ever get away with ever. why are wow to xen doing it he made an emotional connection with tens of millions of americans who were mainly blue collar who felt they had been cut out who weren't part of the conversation and because he made such an emotional connection with them they will forgive him anything either they believe him that he didn't say it or they don't care that he said it it's what and the other they always say something like well he isn't
2:38 am
a politician really he's president the united states he is a politician what do you make of his attack on the pentagon brass saying you know he loves the troops but not the brass. he's had a lot of fights with the pentagon brass because he is not respectful as he said during the campaign i know more than the generals how many times did he say that i know more than the generals and they know that's not true and he's insulted many of them personally he's gone into the pentagon and said terrible things to his own generals insulting things well that has a price trump really wants the votes of the rank and file now originally he had 70 plus percent support the best soundings now are bad basically $5050.00 you still got half of the troops but that's a that's a real come down from 70 percent. is it true that you know all about this that his
2:39 am
standing with hispanic voters is stronger now than 4 years ago it is it's mainly because of cuban americans mainly in florida the cuban americans believe that he is strongly anti castro castro has been dead trees but you know a lot of the older cuban americans larry when you go around and talk to them they start talking about the the bay of pigs it was april by 961 they've been mad at democrat since j.f.k. in the bay of pigs i don't know how you're ever going to change that other hispanics are much more primal i could we have an election similar to 4 years ago with the popular vote winner being the loser yes i hope it doesn't happen it's terrible for the country if it does it's going to encourage violence
2:40 am
because twice in a row you will have had the popular vote not producing a president but it could happen because the electoral college has gone over here and the popular vote is gone over there and that's that's half the problem or about the theory you know better than anyone of so-called secret trump supporters they say the polls a myth that missing these people who really is not saying wait what they're about and then on election day we'll vote for him there are some of them they don't say they're from by they're not they're not lying in telling pollsters they're going to vote for the other candidate they're the people who say i'm undecided actually they're very decided they voted for him 4 years ago they're going to go into the polls and vote for him again. as come allow us help the ticket. i think she helps i don't think a vice presidential candidate ever produces
2:41 am
a victory the exception being lyndon johnson 1960 for j.f.k. but she helps them i think she's popular among communities where turnout was a terrible problem for hillary clinton and biden has to make sure that minority communities vote polling is your business are there too many polls. actually i would argue there are in the key swing states i like to do polling as which most people today do we don't rely on this poll because we think it's great or that poll because we think it's great you wash out a lot of the air in polling when you average out the results that's fine nationally but the popular vote doesn't mean anything i want to see more polls in michigan i want to see more polls in wisconsin and pennsylvania and arizona so that we can average them and have
2:42 am
a pretty good idea of what's happening how important is the upcoming debate much less important than most people think it's the end of the the vast majority of people don't change their minds in debates they tune in to cheer for their side it's like a sporting event so and the democrats come away saying my guy won and the republicans come away and say my guy won so they really don't change very much. larry you've been doing is how long now virginia i've been doing it since the 1960 s. well it's been a long term larry. a great one with young great seeing you again stay well out. that you particularly we need you you're really give me hope larry you stay healthy aright. larry sabato great talking with him will be back with more politicking
2:43 am

joining me now is republican former congressman bob barr of georgia state with double ballin concerns allegations of wrongful voter rolls and lots of others he was attorney general of the state of georgia and he was the libertarian party's presidential nominee in 2008 he's in the latter i the big news of the day of course is trump admitting that he knew the coronavirus was very bad but he wanted to protect the public so he led them down a different path what do you make of that. well it it doesn't surprise me i mean there's a lot of balancing that has to go on whenever a president says something about something as consequential as a as
2:46 am
a pandemic and initially i don't think a lot of people really understood including the experts exactly how insidious this this this virus really was so you know the president i think was trying to balance the need to not create an iq but not also say something that was not true so that that you know gives people a false sense of security it's a very fine line there you know i'm not sure that he really got it exactly right but i understand what he was trying to do what about the reports that he called american troops losers and suckers at a world war one cemetery. that makes no sense to me whatsoever and the timing of it of course is very suspect 2 years after the fact i think it is or at least a year and a half after the fact for this to come out you know trump has a very blunt sometimes over the top way of putting things but i cannot imagine that
2:47 am
he would say something like that in a way that people you know including people that might use it against him could overhear i mean it's one thing to say that you know to your spouse in the privacy of your own bedroom it's quite another to say something so over the top when other people are there so i discount that that makes no sense to me larry ok last month you blogged that teaches who refused to return to the classroom because of call the 19 should be fired he said they should stop acting like scared bunnies and grow up . fired if they're worried about the health of their children and themselves. i don't think it's so much that they should not worry about their health and their children certainly they should but as we were saying here in georgia to simply say well because there's a health problem rather than take reasonable measures to ensure that teachers
2:48 am
administrators and children are protected reasonably we just won't have anybody come to school and instead will rely on distance learning which by any measure and according to all the experts i've seen is not a good way or a complete way for children to learn my point is larry that there are certainly ways that children could be brought back into the schools reasonable measures be taken to protect them and teach them at the same time rather than have them sit at home month after month after month and not benefit from the in classroom experience which is invaluable to their kid to their learning experience the a.c.l.u.'s released a report that says georgia likely removed nearly 200000 georgia citizens from the hotel rolls as the wrongly concluding that these folks had moved when in fact they never moved at all. well there we do have in georgia
2:49 am
a process that the secretary of state or some sponsible for to ensure that the voter rolls are cleaned up on a regular basis and if people move and are not receiving information if they are not properly registered or if they are registered in 2 different places for example if they move in then register to new address it is a legitimate responsibility of the secretary of state to correct that whether or not there were mistakes made i'm not sure yet i'd certainly wouldn't just take the a.c.l.u.'s word for it but certainly it's worth looking into to make sure that the process was done properly are you worried about november 3rd you were about the election what might happen mr votes wrong votes panic in the streets i'm very worried about it larry when i see what's been happening so far on the streets of many cities and you sort of extrapolate from that how angry people are
2:50 am
going to be regardless of the outcome of the election on november 3rd i fear for the safety of our cities and our citizen really people are are so angry so viscerally angry right now that anything could happen and i'm very worried about it and the anger is on both sides and that yes sir it is it's it's it's very it's very toxic i've never seen anything like this i had you know grew up back in the sixty's late sixty's and early seventy's going to college and saw you know as you did the weatherman and the symbionese liberation army and so forth but it was never this ban across a broad swath of our society and it doesn't look better on the horizon does it. no because already. i guess are you know already sort of laying the
2:51 am
groundwork for it just beauty in the election results and even if there may be problems in terms of vote counting or ballots received late the fact that both sides are sort of indicating that they're not ready to accept the result of the election leads me to believe that we're in for a a rough november do you think people would deliberately vote twice go to that trouble of mailing in a vote and go and avoid the just say that will be a very few. well i don't know how many how many it would be but i certainly as a former prosecutor know that people are capable of pretty much everything if they really want to accomplish something so i wouldn't be surprised if we see that happening and what numbers i don't know but this push for universal mail in voting bothers me a great deal and i do think that it is rife for potential problems why
2:52 am
well because you you have so many steps in the process when you have people go to the poll and vote you have basically one step that person is going there their identity is verified here in georgia by a government id and they cast their ballot if you have millions of ballots malad out in advance to whom you don't really know who's collecting those how they're getting dropped off when they're getting dropped off there are so many more steps in the process and every time there is a new step in that process there is the potential for error or deliberate fraud. at a rally in north carolina president trump urged his supporters to gather the polling places and monitor the election won them do expect thieving and stealing and robbing use
2:53 am
a board that well i don't think that kind of rhetoric are really helps here in georgia and i suspect in most states larry we do have a system of monitors at at polling places in addition of that back when i was the u.s. attorney here in atlanta and i know the department of justice continues this process you have u.s. attorneys in every district in the country who are tasked by the attorney general to monitor elections to make sure that there is no fraud from the standpoint of civil rights violations for example under federal law so i think that it's important for people to be to be aware of this but leave leave it up to the authorities at the state and local level to make sure that there is proper monitoring at the polling places i mean we don't need to have been giuliani monitoring so to speak. bob and seems likely that in your state judge's 14th
2:54 am
congressional district is going to elect republican module intel and going and avowed cua nonsupport the president trump has called her a few joe republican star what do you make of her. i don't know her personally i've met her i've seen her i've listened to or you know i certainly read the stories that you're referring to there and many others about some of her some of her beliefs in statements. there are there are there are a little bit out there no doubt about that but i don't know her personally larry. you've endorsed incumbent g.o.p. senator kelly loffler and georgia's nov 3rd special election law for cohen's the new n.b.a. team and criticized the women's basketball league for making black lives matter such a big part of their a season. i think i think that sports to the greatest extent we can larry ought to be or politics ought to be kept out of sports whether it's the women's basketball
2:55 am
league whether it's the n.f.l. whether it's major league baseball you know it it really has become unfortunately very very politicized and i think that is that is something that takes away from the love of the sport so i thought i really don't like to see the you know sports move in that direction whether it's black lies matter or something else i would much prefer to see politics stay out of it. how is the term blood the lives matter political well it is political because the leaders of it are both marxist and very leftist and they are making it very political they are involving themselves deliberately and anti trump activities they are making statements that very clearly are political and i think it really has very little to do with black lives and has everything to do 'd with politics matters nowadays but
2:56 am
you would agree that black lives do matter certainly they do and the lives of every police officer there are matters but i don't think that the organization itself is doing a service to the lives of black people or anybody in this country because they have become so radically politicized. or anything is going to happen and of a 3rd. man i know it is it is so difficult to gauge larry i think that right now i think that the races is tightening somewhat i do think that if the unrest in the violence in cities continues i think that that will be very much on the mind of voters and unless the biden harris team comes out far more strongly than they have already to condemn the violence
2:57 am
saying it once or twice doesn't really cut it i think that's going to hurt them unless they come out very very strongly against this sort of violence and rioting and looting that we've seen how about the president's weaknesses though. now the president's weaknesses are himself he's his own no best best. reason for voting for many his own worst enemy i think his weaknesses he needs to. talk less and act more and act alone more presidential are you worried that there might be big problems on november 3rd. i am i do think that there is great uncertainty even now and i think that with the unrest and the violence that we've seen in the cities i don't see that decreasing or diminishing before the election and i think it will increase unfortunately. do you miss holding public office.
2:58 am
some aspects of it larry i do miss the work that i was able to engage in while i served on that you this year a committee in the house it's a very important work and right up my alley a lawyer in his former prosecutor but i don't miss the environment nowadays in washington it is so on pleasant it's just sucked all of the enjoyment out of the work up there and that's very unfortunate. thanks for being with us we always appreciate your thoughts thank you larry thank you for having me and thank you audience for joining me on this edition of politicking remember you can join the conversation on my facebook page or tweet me at kings things don't forget to use the politicking hash tag that's all for this edition of politicking.
