president my parents were a highlight reel of modern us political discourse a great example of this was seen in how the 2 candidates battled over whose political party has created or lost more us jobs than the other in our 1st 3 years after we could. give lation unleashed american energy this administration saw 500008 basement jobs created joe biden is responsible for saving america's auto industry and you fight it against it but in the age of 19 it's not just about the creation of jobs here in america it's also about keeping workers safe at those jobs and according to a new complaint filed by the largest trade unions in the u.s. the united states government has been woefully and dangerously inadequate in workplace safety in this time of covert 19 the washington post reports that the

service employees international union in the a.f.l.-cio has filed a complaint with the united nations international labor organization in geneva charging that the u.s. government is violating workers' rights in terms not typically associated with well off countries at one point saying the bind they bind many essential workers have been placed in during the pandemic forced to risk infection or lose their jobs and potentially unemployment benefits amounts to a system of forced labor. the post goes on to note that the some of the complaints harshest accusations were over the trump administration's executive orders the clear again history such as meat packing essential compelling them to stay open even amid potential novelle coronavirus outbreaks while federal agencies including osha declined to issue and forcible safety regulations so with no help coming from our elected officials at home due to both the democrat republican

party's fealty to corporate money power and influence u.s. labor unions are now forced to look to the united nations for help. yes my friends it is come to that which means it's time to start watching the hawks. on a city street. there so you can see that this is joyce state. great city this least systemic deception is to late show which. so you'll. welcome everyone to watch it i robot and i will be surprised i mean it's incredible that our workers here in the united states have now got to go to international bodies you know international organizations in order to try to hope to get some kind of rights back hope to get some kind of workplace safety that's that mind

blowing and babble and so many ways for the past what 7 decades plus we have been seen as a nation that continually progressed when it came to workers' rights and just brush rating now that we're going to institutions for assistance that we usually argue on behalf of other place. to go to when they are you know major problems like this and now we're finding ourselves in that exact same lurch if there's a lot about our leadership it also says a lot about how demoralizing we're actually making everyday work for american citizens richard trumka the president of the f l c o told the washington post quote covert has laid bare what we already knew it has demonstrated that not only is the u.s. violating workers' rights but those violations are resulting in people died it became soil rageous that we wanted to file the complaint and when you look at the numbers it is kind of frightening when you see these you know you see them in this

report when you lay it out that you see complaints to osha and then 1720 days later you see a spike in krona virus best know that's enough correlation to say people were complaining but then. you know now they're getting hit because no one stepped up no one stepped up to say what will be workplace safety guidelines everything was kind of patchwork or what ever anybody could grab no it absolutely was in the other part is that if you work in a factory or if you work with machinery or if you did any of those types of industry level jobs you were one of the last people to get p.p. equipping and you know they and their their families everyone is hearing about how 1000 is ravaging yet they fought to keep food on the table so they're still going into work and the devastation is just being quite severe and these organizations have not paid any attention to the mandate that the state in many cases nor you know we have a lack of it at the federal level but they have not been attentive to any of the science behind 1000 either so they're risking a lot of potential workers when you say leg of the federal it's interesting because

the 1st thing people think of when they with think about workplace safety is osha you know the occupation safety and health administration their job is to enforce workplace safety workers can silently and honestly say hey look some of my job sites dangerous can you come in and spec but that's one of the major problems they're saying is the cause of this is that in the 1935 national labor relations act commonly referred to as the wegner act that actives like so old it now excludes farmers contractors good workers and other types of more precarious employees from any kind of labor rights labor protection rights here in this country but getting the ocean. researchers at harvard boston boston children's hospital and the master's purpose department of public to help from that to date the occupational safety and health administration has not issued any emergency or permanent standards specific to cope with 19 exposure at the workplace they have not received any rulings as to how you're supposed to keep your workplace safe that's just the thing even worse as of august 13th 2020 osha has issued only 4 citations related to

covert 19 moreover the total number of federal ocean spectrums of any kind during 2020 has been written. by 2 third's compared to the same period in prior years they're inspecting the last and they've only found 4 instances in the entire country of a workplace not taken covert seriously in putting their workers in danger absolutely and their initial. conversation about that was that they didn't want to expose their inspectors to. so you're not going in because you don't want to expose your own people meanwhile you are the organisation that is supposed to provide the check in the balance for these corporations or these entities that are doing things that they shouldn't for their employees and i hate to say it but that is directly because of corporate influence on our politicians on the federal level and both parties are guilty of this no one you don't see many people go out saying hey we need more inspectors at osha we're going to fight for this osha has been gradually

chipped away and chipped away and chipped away and now the trunk administration is come in and kind of put that chipping away on overdrive but journalist i want to point this out journalist david serota writes that ultimately what the g.o.p. wants is an entire american workforce that is legally barred from suing employers financially punished for refusing to return to unsafe work places and unable to call the workplace cops when lives are put in danger that's frightening because that is kind of the corporate idea we're allowed up here to do whatever we want you work for us we pay you so you are then obliged to do whatever we say while the g.o.p. is treating workers like cogs in a wheel they don't see them as human and they are a means of manufacturing so this isn't surprising but it is really frustrating because it also you know it breaks the backs of unions as well because the top administration in g.o.p.'s consistently tried to strip them of their rights as well so that's typically the last stand for workers who really are are trying to get their voices heard i hope that as we turn this i hope that at some point when this

country starts turning around we start actually doing things to protect lives it's a member me and you said it this does back in the spring when they have the big push to get people back to work saying no what this is this is feeding. people to the nightmare that is co but i wish people would step up and try to change this in the future will keep our fingers crossed but as long as corporations have their chokehold in washington i don't think that's going to happen. with every passing day we get closer and closer to november 3rd yes that fateful day when the united states of america chooses a new commander in chief and in between now and then one message is being heard all across the country from maine to san diego from politicians to celebrity to social media influencer and that message is to get out and vote but in the age of coded gerrymandering and held on hold trump several states have already reported voting issues that are creating new concerns ahead of our great election day artie's rachel blevins joins us now with all of the gritty details thank you for coming on

rachel so. let's look at florida florida's always where those big swing states we talk about every election water the voting issues that we're seeing take place in florida well if you look back at 200 florida was the state that passed as a landmark legislation that would allow some convicted felons to vote now at the time they saw it as something that would help hundreds of thousands of residents who had served their time convicted of very dangerous crimes and were still contributing to society but even though the majority of the state was in favor of it their new republican governor was not and so he launched this mission to really go against it into got those provisions and to add new requirements to it so now in 2020 we have them saying well convicted felons can vote as long as they don't owe any fines or fees to the state well that creates a whole new host of problems obviously because you have an incentive to get those people to vote in some ways and where you can even influence their vote and then at

the same time you have felons who may not know exactly what the state so they can actually get into even more trouble with the law if they do move forward with voting. and you know another topic that is on the minds of a lot of people across this country because of a lot of the conversation we've heard from president trump and his acolytes is around mail in voting and absentee ballots so what is new on that front how do we prove the fact versus the fiction when we've jeff only seen a big push without especially at a time when they're trying to limit in person gatherings or telling people hey voter early send in your bollards do all of that stuff as early as possible well we've heard from voters in states like ohio and new york saying that they requested absentee ballots but then received either the wrong ballots altogether or the wrong form the wrong address that kind of thing now those technicalities are extremely important because when we're talking about those ballots we're looking at places where in the 2020 primaries alone more than half

a 1000000 ballots were rejected and they can be rejected because. is your signature look a little off because you're out of the middle initial here on this forum but not on this forum it can be any number of things to especially when we're looking at an election and wondering if it's going to be close what it's going to look like every vote counts so those concerns that we're hearing now are especially important in that they're getting taken care of getting them out of movie now as we approach election day. only a few weeks away but how i think the biggest question is given what you've been saying and what we've all been hearing about you don't get a vote get out and vote vote early do. those waters early you know how was early voting playing a role in this election you know what words are look like right now well so far they say that around 5600000 votes have been cast in early voting in the 2020 alexion that is far and above what we saw in 2016 and if we look back at 2016 we see an election where voter turnout was at a 20 year low so over the last 4 years you've really seen that message turned

you've really seen you know from whether it be celebrities any time you get on facebook or instagram they're telling you hey pressure to vote get out and vote and we're also in a time where a lot of people already know exactly who they're voting for and they know that ahead of the debates and all of that so they're much more likely to try to make their voice heard and to hope that everything goes as planned and their ballot is accepted and do you think that there are going how do you think this is going to play out on election night we've heard that you might not get a date someone actually elected and sell weeks or a month later with what you know about what's going on with the ballots in early voting how do you think that's going to affect when america will know who the next president is was certainly is going to have an impact especially because you do have states saying that they're either going to count those ballots the day after polls close or maybe that they're even going to wait a few days so especially when it comes to those very important battleground states that are literally looking at every single ballot it is going to play a big role and it's also going to play a big role to see how those 2 candidates handle it you know you've got the

a system of government that use race before personhood isn't anything new to america in fact it's what this country was founded on from the early explorers who open land owned by native americans and brutalized them to a country for treatment of blacks and latinos america seems to function on racial bias and exclusion but for black america there is a particularly nasty and pervasive level of abuse domestic terrorism legal discrimination and a limp dick level hurtles institutional racism and white supremacy supremacy present in the united states slavery reconstruction jim crow the prison industrial complex a subpar education system lax health care housing equity you name it and somehow this country has created a nearly impenetrable system of racism is to keep blacks from progressing. and in a nation that speaks so heavily of its christian leanings its devotion to biblical principles and touts think often the actions of whites against their black

counterparts don't exactly mirror jesus's teachings does the white church deny there is a race problem are these churches complicit why do they they've leaders stand on the sidelines a new book titled white lies 9 ways to expose and resist the racial systems that divide us moves to answer those questions and more arthur and pastor daniel hill takes a deep dive into the cultural and historical trails of racism in america he not only defines white supremacy and gives real world context but also speaks of the ideology that makes it so hard to root out and give steps specifically for the church on the work they have to do in teaching equity standing with black people and making america live up to its ideals hill is a racial equity advocate pastor of river city church a multiethnic congregation to congo and is on a mission to lead church leaders beyond the racism deeply embedded in the white evangelical church daniel hill joins us now to discuss his book the takes all right

supremacy were biblical winds welcome daniel. hey i mean. so you and i go way back we're both chicago people i know of your church quite a bit and you're someone who leaves this massive most high cultural church in what is one of the well it is america's most segregated city chicago you've seen promise that are the results of community vestment a bias criminal justice system the results of redlining how are these things addressed in your church and how does your congregation live out the examples that you set out in your book. you know that's a big question. i think if you've heard the analogy right of. it there's babies being coming down to the stream of a river and you try to help the babies are coming down but at some point you have to go upstream and you're out why the babies right over the water in the 1st place i would say that that describes the full range of a lot of we're trying to do as a church is try to support folks who are trying to navigate what you call those i'm

excited hurdles and you know trying to walk with folks as they do that but then at the same time we're trying to take a deeper look at the foundations at the roots of what has led to these racial disparities in the 1st place and to really equipped people to be true tellers that can really uproot the ideology of white supremacy from everywhere that it lives it's interesting you know i i want to ask you this because it comes up a lot especially now the election and all of that and you see a lot of you know evangelical white churches and church members are politicians that belong to you know talking about you know their connection with god and jesus and all that but historically speaking you know white evangelical churches have not had the greatest of records when it comes to race relations in this country you know they upheld slavery they back jim crow. back agree just and unjust sentencing at times and they constantly have ignored the rights of black people throughout up until now in present day you know do you think there is hope for those white evangelical churches who have this nasty history. you know upbringing does there

hope for them to get better when it comes to racism in this country. well hi i agree with you and all those things you said and despite the touch reputation that comes with that word even joke along one of them i'm a white image of a pastor and so i see 1st and all that i think there are many of us who dream deeply that that's both our history and our current reality but you know there are those of us who have seen the kind of profound sin both historically and in present times and are doing our best to maim that to repent of and confessed of it and leader people in a different direction so i have to hope that the very core of my faith is not a matter of the biggest energy or you can find redemption and so that's my hope for those of us in the white evangelical community as well. and then you in your book you try to when you talk about this this recognition of evil i think that that's a that's a big thing in the christian church in general all the evils of the world as opposed to be fighting against not just your role as

a christian but the jellicoe church has largely not made any noise about societal problem of white supremacy or recognizing that as been a central evil why do you think it's so important right now in this nation's at this point in this nation's history and what advice would you give the church leaders who are grappling with how to speak to their congregation on this touchy issue. you know when i'm with white pastors we're doing this work i'd remind them that we have to take a historical viewpoint of it and the reality is christianity in america is really unique as opposed to other places because it's part of our origin story white supremacy christianity grew up together here in the united states and so this is a new for white christian to be turning a blind eye towards what supremacy as you did that powerful introduction we had to learn how to look the other way during colonialism and genocide when to look the other way as slavery became kind of the norm for building our economy and so it's ingrained into our system of coming to believe deeply in jesus and somehow learning to look the other way when it comes to black suffering and so i don't think that's

a representation of jesus at all i think a clear view. jesus demands that we tell the truth and deal with this but unfortunately christians have learned how to coexist where they think about personal faith and some are able to turn a blind eye to black suffering is that hard to find that hard and you find that you know pretty rampant in the evangelical or in the white evangelical community where it says where they kind of is that hypocrisy is how rampant is that in your in your ventures in kind of dealing with this. where i think it's rampant you know i think in every circle we are all having to deal with kind of some of the brainwashing that comes with white supremacy and so i think in white christian circles it's particularly of a joke a more conservative spaces there's been this kind of i would almost call it a propaganda that has treated things like racism and white supremacy black lives matter so like that they treated it it's need label that is kind of leftist social movements that aren't directly relevant to their faith and so once a waitress comes to believe that they just stop thinking about it and so the best

of even joke with them is i have grown up and it is that there is this view that god is beautiful and loving and it's revealed god self through the bible and through the person of jesus and that when we follow and when you know we're most alive when we're loving our neighbor and so what i'm trying to say is like you know you missed it very early on right to love jesus is that he writes promise and that's kind of the core message in every white circle on minutes that to love jesus to hate white supremacy and that's a new unfortunates a new idea in a lot of spaces but the good news is a lot of people are hearing that going oh well i do love jews so i guess that means i need to learn to hate white supremacy as i can solve everything better communicate and starting point if you start thinking like that most awfully do i want to ask you this too as do organizations like the southern baptist convention and other groups have an imperative to change i mean we've already seen the s.p.c. move to change its name and and release a statement during the george floyd protests you know do you feel the church is moving forward or is this more kind of performative walking is just to make sure no one points a finger at them. it will be both you know i think there's we're seeing fits

and starts and somebody thinks on that nick a lot of it i think is temporary and then we revert back to our bad patterns my word and whites but you know i think we need a critical mass of white christians or need to try to change i mean i think we should be active but you know there's a biblical image in the old testament sackcloth and ashes where once our community recognized how evil the their day was and how they participate in it they would wear 2nd ashes as a sign of their repentance for participating in the evil and so really what i'm hoping for i don't know what a critical mass to be 20 percent 30 percent 40 percent but i think what is a critical mass in the white church just even acknowledge our complicity with this evil and to repent of their complicity i think is going to change the tenor of the conversation and you know whites from she'll still be a monster going today to take on but that's where i'm really hoping a large percent of the white church will begin it with kind of having their own sackcloth and ashes moment about how profound white supremacy is how evil it is and how complicit we've been in giving it safe haven. and daniel churches are known to

be the most segregated place in america pacifically on sundays but every other day of the week so thank you for you know leading this multicultural charge of yours but also for you know speaking out against one of the societal ills and again from knowing you for a while i know that this isn't something that you just jumped on today you have been about this for years now and i think that your book could have the opportunity to showcase a lot of how the church can actually step forward. and thank you mission is very meaningful and thank you very much for coming on today and talking to our audience about this and i look forward to having you on in the future so that it's important to you know hear this message about you know how to balance their faith you know with current issues facing politics and culture today so thank you very much. thanks i'm very appreciative of your work thank you. already buddy about is our show for you today and remember everyone in this world we are not told that we are loved and i really mean it. i tell you i love you i roll them for and i don't keep
