tv News RT January 6, 2021 6:00pm-6:31pm EST
6:00 pm
live from the world headquarters of the r.t. america our nation's capital this is the news with rick sanchez and that is a wonderful introduction and i want to thank my colleague for doing that i'm rick sanchez let's get started. for those of you watching us from around the world including those of you using your phones on the portable t.v.'s we thank you there's so much going on in america on this day and we want to start with some breaking news that we've received just moments ago and it's it's sad news remember this story that we've been telling you throughout the day this is a woman who was one of the original protesters who tried to get inside the building
6:01 pm
breached the wall there at the u.s. capitol. apparently she was shot by police we assume using rubber bullets because we know they were using live rounds at least as far as we know. and we were just told moments ago this woman whose identity we still do not have has just perished she has just passed away she becomes the very 1st. casualty of this situation that we've been watching unfold here today in our nation's capital we did have pictures that we've shown you earlier that were actual video of the moment it happened but we've chosen now that we've learned that she's deceased just based on decency and journalistic principle that we're not going to show you that video but we do want to bring up to date on what's going on today here in our nation's capital it has been a wild day to say the least after the 2 representatives in the state of georgia won their election and after the president of the united states told protesters that they should go to the capital and speak their mind some of them took it beyond that
6:02 pm
and. actually breached the walls of the capitol as a joint session of congress was trying to affirm the presidency of joe biden the next president of the united states they did so and in doing so had a confrontation with police in fact you see them there taking down all those barricades they were able to use the barricades to get into the building and break into the building look look at this these are secret service literally with their guns drawn as the protesters are breaking into the building we have another shot take a look at this other shot we have it's the same essentially the same thing just a different angle look look at that this this is the tension that was caused when these protesters breached the walls of the 2nd tier of the capitol and then got in side of the building as congress a joint session there was trying to affirm the presidency something which is constitutionally mandated in fact here is the moment when the session was actually
6:03 pm
interrupted. and it was still in recess until the call of the. people boss' 1st decision the then thank you use it now one of the members will tell them everybody stay down you can see them waving their hands down as if to say everybody stay in your seat because we think that there are people in the building and they they were they were worried at that point that the protesters were coming in to attack members of congress so they filed them up one by one and then were able to get them out of the building many of them with gas masks to a location so they wouldn't be seen by the protesters it has been a wild and woolly day the situation now is. finally it's starting to get dark here in washington d.c. usually sun set is about over 530 or so it's now 6 o'clock in our nation's capital they have been in acting a curfew which started 3 minutes ago where they were finally starting to ask people
6:04 pm
to leave the capital area and. as far as we can tell that has been successful how successful we don't know we hope to be able to talk to some of our colleagues who are out there ben swann for for one who has been catching us up on exactly what's happening out there we should be able to hear from him in a little while but for those of you who normally watch r t america at this time as you probably know this is the time when you get to watch watching the hawks with both. and. and they're good enough to join us now i'm just going to be there helper on this day and help them kind of get through the information that we've all been watching unfold tyrrel has been good enough to join us to try to make sense of everything out there as well as i mean as we were starting to see some videos of this going on tyrrell i'll begin with you your sense of this new report that this this young lady. she's seen no more than maybe someone in her early thirty's maybe late twenty's has perished after being shot while
6:05 pm
trying to get into the capital it's truly heartbreaking and it's truly tragic that somebody had to lose a life today over what is ultimately a donald trump vanity project you know he stood in front of his people today and said hey we need to stop this vote we need to keep this from happening it's a fraudulent election basically filling their heads full of more of his own kind of lies and ego driven propaganda yes i'll say that because i'm an opinion talk show host that's my opinion but it is truly tragic that a life had to be lost today because these people felt that they needed to storm the capitol in order to put a stop to a vote that is going to be inevitable eventually no matter what happens the congress is going to ratify the congress is going to declare joe biden the winner you're not going to be able to get around that and it's truly heartbreaking that someone had to lose their life because of it i mean should help us understand for those who are watching and want you to put this in perspective a lot of people would watch this and say well they're protesting they have a right to believe what they believe some people in america were angered when they
6:06 pm
watch the black lives matter protesters what's the difference if there is any. well there is a huge difference 1st and foremost i do think that this started as a peaceful protest for the 1st probably couple hours these people have been gathering since early this afternoon however it quickly turned after they recognized that they were not going to get exactly what they wanted f.p. recognize that vice president might no power to change the election results or for states to go back and take back the election results that they've already started by mitch mcconnell previous senate majority leader also stood by the constitution and it made it really you know he couldn't do anything to help these folks either the interesting thing about this game and in d.c. we have seen peaceful protests before not just black lies matter black eyes matta protest even reached the size here is what we've seen of these protesters today and i mean i don't even want to call them that these were domestic terrorists at best
6:07 pm
they had i.e.d. bombs they had guns they barged in with bets but if we're going to compare i think that's something you could probably compare it to that was peaceful and still had millions of people was the 1000000 man march this was led by black people you had better come on you had several civil rights leaders who have literally stood in front you know argue for the rights of black people who cross this country who marched on capitol hill who brought their people here in intros and you did not see this type of action here we see people who are dead set on creating an environment of chaos an environment of threats and they were literally following the playbook that donald trump has tweeted about for the past few weeks that number 6 was a day to show up and show out november 6th was the day that they would take their country back you know be merciful the day that they would make sure president again even though millions of people across america have voted him out it is over for him and these people by any means necessary going to try to change that result and i think that that's why they're here and that's why we cannot call this
6:08 pm
a. peaceful protest by any means because the majority of people out there they're out there are they're out there. to do whatever they want to do you they are out there ready to grab and they are there because they surely believe line and sinker with all of your heart that this election was stolen even though there is absolutely no evidence to show that virginia officials are now saying they're going to be sending in $200.00 state troopers we understand that the national guard 'd will be more active now over the next couple of hours maryland's governor has said he said being in the maryland state police and the state national guard troops in d.c. to assist tyrrel to you one wonders what took so long and how it is that police officers there in the capital let this get away from that you know it's interesting i think the police officers in the capitol let it get away from them just because of the sheer numbers that you had as reported earlier today for us
6:09 pm
we're talking about the numbers that were out at the capitol and out by the white house and then coming over to the capitol has a lot of numbers for capitol police to handle but it does bring up a very interesting point whether black lives matter or protesting this summer you saw a much greater police presence and a much greater militarized police presence around those protests street by street block by block but here at the nation's capital there isn't one that also brings up the other question how many billions do we have we spent on security and other such things that they've said we absolutely needed and yet here you know couple 100 maybe a 1000 people just walk right into the capitol i've seen video of police at the capitol actually kind of parting like the red sea just letting them walk right by now we've seen the other videos as well that showed them putting up a much more larger fight but it raises a lot of very serious and very interesting questions about how we allowed this to happen and why do we treat to protrude protests so badly different let's remember also the black lives matter protesters are really there some are also fighting because law enforcement was shooting them in the dead in the streets and were
6:10 pm
fighting over those and were protesting over those issues what does this protest really over donald trump didn't win in the. action i mean there's 2 vastly different vastly different excuses to be in the streets one to me is honorable you're fighting to save lives within your community the other what are you doing you're fighting to save donald trump's political career you know something interesting is taking place right now it's it's happening in times square in new york this is actually trump pardon me and type trump protest protesting the protesters who are in washington d.c. it's a counter protest of sorts that we were told is taking place there in new york city interestingly enough seem to be almost in rock at fashion they're kicking their boots up but you know i will i will challenge the assertion somewhat tyrrel and maybe maybe i'll do this with me show and then of course you can certainly respond
6:11 pm
as well a lot of people would say the reason police were more assertive or more aggressive with black lives matter protesters was because there were some factions maybe whoever who got into their organizations or their protest and really did as we like to say in the neighborhood act the fool they really did break stuff they really did cause a lot of damage and when you get to that point police then have to take a different tone is that a fair argument ameesha. no and i say that because the police and police aggression has a long history in this country of responding at high levels when the person is black or brown and it is always been that case it has been that case when you stand outside and hold a sign and you don't have near uni being on you it has been that case in the absence of looting it has been that case when you were sleeping in your own bed in your house and you get shot and killed as a black person so no i don't think that that is actually or you know
6:12 pm
a case that we can use by and large on b.l.m. at all what i do think is there was a certain level of aggression that was used towards women because of it being a black activist organization and we saw that and we've seen it throughout history with black activist organizations as well as civil rights leaders email k. went to jail in the uk a had water hoses that were used on him or of the king had dogs that were used on him and he was the peaceful list of peaceful protesters so i'll definitely say that you know that that doesn't hold water for me what i do know is that when it comes to white protestors when it comes to white insurgents when it comes to white people who blow things up we see them walk away in nary a scratch on them police have always reacted to them with kid gloves and they continue to do so and today i would say that that has been something that we've seen play through at the capitol even though congress was in session even though senators were making this very important vote today we saw that they did not believe that they needed a more police even though there were thousands of armed people outside with the
6:13 pm
incident to create chaos and mayhem if those are people who are african-american were those people weren't armed and were african-american i guarantee you would have seen a lot more police presence and it's called watching the heart of a mission across tyro bonjour you guys were going to take a break stand by because i do want your take as well in the 2nd half of our show about what happens now to the republican party it seems to be on this day as much in disarray as at least i've seen it in a long time we'll talk about we're also going to be talking to a u.s. marshal he's going to create the strategy or draw. to help us understand what police will now do to try and deescalate the situation they find themselves and this is the news a break sanchez filling in for watching the hearts we'll be right back. listen subletting online algorithms dictate what you get to want to go to portable dot t.v. slash download to get killer television it's completely free i'm talking award

6:16 pm
been a wild day and at times we just had no idea where this thing was heading to sans the interruption of a government process which was underway but we're now getting a sense since the curfew started that things may start to finally settle down for confirmation of that let's go to our correspondent who's been on the scene all day long diligently bringing us details of what's been going on ben swan now out there among them as they would say are things calming down bad. so so things are about to get a little bit rough here let's just pan over here next just so we have capitol police are coming through we've got to move on ok we're being told we have to move on by capitol police rick we got to go we got to go. all right or you see the police officer telling ben that he's not going to be able to file his report just as he had told us that he thought things might be able to get a little rough maybe what we can do is we can reach ben by text if we could some
6:17 pm
here and at least try and give our viewers a sense of what he was intimating when he said that if you got an ok on that let me know in the meantime let me bring in matthew fog he's a retired chief deputy u.s. marshal a man who's been in this type of situation has experience with this type of thing so many questions for you marshal i guess the 1st one is how does it seem to you like the police today and the law enforcement officials allowed this to get away from them somehow did they or is that just our perspective. oh no i have that's 1st thing entered my mind is rick is that fact that they knew this thing was coming i mean the president had tweeted everybody knew this was one of the a victim of the fact in a lot of discussion about how these rats his need look these people were going to actually have try to take over the capital so they sort of had those limp portsmouth's in place a long time ago somebody dropped the ball on this big time and that's a 1st think in my mind and then the 2nd thing is i don't i don't think anybody
6:18 pm
would shoot rubber bullets i believe is everybody had you know live ammo india guns i desk by this lady just feel but the bottom line is i'm shocked that a whole lot more people weren't healed because of the fact that once they started breech annex a cure of the operation most of our training is you know you shoot to kill when you stop i mean we've seen them a vehicle suit a lady in a vehicle who hit just at the barricades and a crowd on her and curator and a cop would have children so when we see stuff like this we ask why was there so much you know reserve why would they let news people actually go inside the capitol and then when you hear that they now are sweet because they got a sweet get out of what bombs they got and look all types and anything that might have been left there so it they got a really security in place so it just caught me by surprise at how they let this thing get out of control without having enough reinforcements there he had to let
6:19 pm
me ask you a very difficult question and i want you to think long and hard about your answer do you think it's possible that the reason they were reserved in their reaction has to do with the fact that they may share an ideology with some of the people who are protesting. you know it's hard to say from law enforcement perspective and that may very well be true but it just seems to me that it's so odd that you had i mean we've seen these protests going on around the country now we've seen incidents where people were home you would have thought you've got them the most primary building in the united states the capitol and the white house in those places all of you would have thought that went down from sent out is message and people are saying hey let's go for a test they would have said look we can expect anything so we're going to let these protests only get but so close that people coming in with guns and weapons you shouldn't even be nowhere near the capitol would it with
6:20 pm
a weapon i don't care what about anything about gun rights when you're going to those areas you should be carrying weapons bats but tahn so they want to pad but no i answered a question. i just don't know i just know that it we have to really look at this thing from a long term perspective and try to understand why we're at a given so much leeway when normally like you said like some i mentioned earlier back last matter they had 3 in for the reinforcements of police. and then we see what we saw today usually in situations like this i know you know because you're a police officer i know because i'm a long time cop beat reporter in miami and other places where i've covered riots and disturbances this is about the time you bring in the having guns this is about the time you bring in the alpha forces and you bring in the national guard and you literally create barricades and people cannot cross that barricade and if you have to move people you move them do you expect that tonight that will take place and by tomorrow morning there will be no protests on the streets of washington d.c.
6:21 pm
and certainly not around the capital. what a weird looks now and from looking at all the media accounts right now i'm that on the scene but it looks like they're clearing people out people are moving away from it but i can tell you here and now once those people move away from a particular area they will make sure that area so secure all nobody b.d. of them are not it would be totally different tomorrow but right now we've got it right now we've got people still around right now now you've got a. you know a situation where to not secure 100 percent know and to be honest with you i'm surprised that it's the congressional the legislators come back assad's all of this until they are 100 percent sure that there are no bombs and nothing that's been left and at that i mean in the capital or some place where around like that so i don't see i don't see them are being a lot secure and you have way more reinforcements we hear in that the various they police some of the them are almost a police we hear in that the f.b.i.
6:22 pm
all of these songs nation now even the u.s. marshals we've got a special operations group that i was a member that doesn't operate and we have the riots in atlanta the riots out and when rodney king occurred so i know about the same situation where they called us in and we got a minute we got to move fast but yeah to mars for me is that you can best believe they're going to have a whole lot of security i had a feeling but i'm so glad you can confirm that for us what an interesting perspective especially sharing with us that now they're going to have to do sweeps of all these buildings which would then delay any governmental process for yet another day or maybe more right matthew fogg former marshal my thanks to you sure you're always a great guest to have on these types of stories thanks again thank you great let me get back to the question i asked ben swan a little while ago and i was just told by some of my colleagues here who have some conversations with ben that indeed as far as he can tell where he was things are starting to get somewhat more under control whether we can say at this point that
6:23 pm
all 'd. the protesters have been moved from a location or that they're obediently following the direction of the law enforcement officials i don't think we can say that right now but certainly compared to the standoff we had there at the capitol before speaking only of the capitol the situation seems to be improving somewhat this is old video by the way don't mind that live bug you see over there on the left because this is the video we showed earlier see that video right there those are the actual protesters breaching the capitol building there inside the capitol they just walked in it is the strangest thing you'll ever see just people out of nowhere walking in apparently police were unable to stop them and how they got in or what specifically they did we don't know we see the police officers there trying to figure out and eventually they were able to get him out of the building let me go back now to let me shoot cross and tyrol ventura the hosts of watching the hawks as they watch this
6:24 pm
situation with us one of the things today that is most interesting thing is interesting is the republican party in and of itself they lost 2 major senate seats in the state of georgia and now they have the 2 most important institutional figures in the party the vice president united states and mitch mcconnell pensive mcconnell essentially going before the microphones today and saying guys we're not with trump anymore we're essentially going to follow the constitution biden won and sorry in fact they were adamant about it in their points yet there are some of the republican party who disagree with both of them what happens to this republican party tyro going to start it well you know either would moving forward this republican party is a lot of people say it's in disarray and split and things like that and i think we've seen this for a long 'd time coming you can only kind of flirt with the extreme for so long before then you realize it's infected you and i think that what you're going to see moving forward is going to see a lot of republicans suddenly saying wow i was never really a part of that even though they were and i think we're going to see
6:25 pm
a lot of them try to distance themselves from that in your. and i think we're going to see people like paul ryan who left what 23 years ago suddenly come back into the party spotlight to kind of stacy i was i was in a part of the trump thing i'm here now to kind of bring as not to what we expect plus lens we will there's a lot of democrats that are so far right they're really just pro-choice republicans so you know it's going to be interesting to see just how the country itself politically moves forward from this because these are very strange and interesting times and it's going to be very curious to see how we can actually pull out of them do you think of me sure what happened today is going to hurt the cause of the pro trump republicans the trumps the republicans if you were. absolutely it more than anything else the past 4 years be events of today are going to be hard for anyone to be able to substantiate or try to downplay and this is just you know today i was at the runtime of this program we're going into the night and we know that you know
6:26 pm
the crazies come out at night in a lot of dangerous things that it might and i nothing in me says that they're not going to continue to you know these people were never going to go away they were never going to be quiet they were never going to accept defeat and i believe that what we know of the base of the trunk we know that base is the pro in the for a while the people even those who weren't as crazy as the people we saw in the capitol today they are going to find it very difficult to distance themselves from this and i feel as though for everyone who's watching across the globe this is a huge stain on american history this is a huge stain on our democracy or it out when president you are ready to pay for your presidency that was in shambles this is just par for the course i mean as a disaster go out as an even bigger one as if members of congress were watching our newscast just as we brought this point up we get this now from usa today the members of congress 1 are expressing confidence that they will reconvene to count the electoral college votes after rioters rushed to the u.s.
6:27 pm
capitol lawmakers are now saying they're prepared to meet again. as soon as the capitol is cleared a citywide curfew went into effect in washington d.c. at 6 pm so there you go they're saying look we're going to get back in there and we're going to finish this process important i imagine tyrrel down to about 20 seconds as well that should we have to continue the gears you know that there was a democracy in the gears of government have to keep moving forward if we let. them who are in very deep trouble because any number of groups can then continue to free as our democratic process is moving forward into the future important for them to be able to say that down to 20 for you as well. absolutely i think that this was extremely smart on their part it was extremely strategic business as usual has to keep going to be this is a procedural thing that doesn't even make news it made news today because of the chaos and mayhem of the ministration in his inability to accept the loss well it's been an interesting day watching all of this especially the vice president of the united states essentially being walked out of the capitol as he was in the midst of
6:28 pm
trying to affirm the next presidency of the united states army should cross tyrrel been sure of the hosts of watching the hawks thanks guys you honored me with letting you help in your show we'll see you again very soon i'm rick sanchez my 1st time. 21. 21 america's been exploring it in a place that china for 20 years and. now all that money. for 25 years is. real and.
6:29 pm
so what we've got to do is identify the threats that we have it's crazy. let it be an arms race in. spearing dramatic development only personally i'm going to resist i don't see how that strategy will be successful very critical time to sit down and talk. the way of life for reindeer is leading a traditionally nomadic lifestyle in the tundra is similar to a parallel reality right now i know. that the men drive the hoods women carry the weight of the household look on their shoulders and show them with their honesty let's see now. i think that's nice however in the vast expanse of russia there. were housewives could secure the regular employment status it's in the final 2 nights to make him astronomers.
6:30 pm
in usually she's. breaking news on our t.v. special forces move in after the u.s. capitol building is stormed to supporters as chaos engulfs the heart of washington congress has put into lockdown halting a session to confirm joe biden as the winner of the presidential election the president elect brands the riots a dark moment in u.s. history while donald trump himself tells his supporters to remain peaceful and go. straight to the safety of duly elected officials not protest insurrection.
