7:00 pm
price at the. dependency and addiction to opiates to long term use that really isn't scientifically just. now study actually suggest that. the long term effects might not just be absence of benefit but actually that it might be causing long to . live from the world headquarters of r t america in our nation's capital this is. rick sanchez. our buddy i'm rick sanchez i want to bring up to date now and i want to welcome all of you watching us from all over the world including those of you who are watching us using portable t.v. up in fact especially you who are watching us from around the world because you must be looking at this on this day and wondering what in the world is going on in the united states of america so it's usually an orderly process where one president loses an election the next president is coming in happens every 4 to 8 years and
7:01 pm
that next president must be affirmed by the u.s. congress actually a joint session of u.s. congress which was what how what was happening this morning in washington d.c. when suddenly a group of people protesters following the order of the president of the united states went to the u.s. capitol not to be to be fair to the president ited states he didn't go and tell them to go to the capitol he did not tell them to try 1 and breach the capitol or break into the capitol but that's exactly what they did here's the video from earlier in the day when they started going over the barricades but they didn't stop there then they went up the stairs and then actually use some of those barricades to climb up on the top tier into the capitol where they actually broke in to the capitol as a matter of fact. these are the videos that we've been seeing throughout the day were it seems like they were manifesting that they were in the capital in fact there they are those are the protesters inside part of the cap. it all which we've
7:02 pm
all 'd come to see when we visited the capitol but you can't just get in there nearly willy whatever you want which is exactly what they did look at this picture we're going to show you now the police officers with their guns drawn look at the fear in the faces of the cops these are secret service agents realizing that people are breaking in and they're trying to stop them because remember there's a joint session of congress going on where just moments ago as this is happening both mitch mcconnell of the vice president had stayed said enough is enough they're going to follow the constitutional mandate and they're going to affirm the presidency of joe biden so it's it's been it's been amazing to watch and then there's the horrible news that of arizona. the fact here's the. boss 1st decision the people didn't think you know before they come in they reach the building secret service goes into the building and tells both the senators and the congressmen the house members there that someone has breached and that they all
7:03 pm
have to take their seats and then prepare to orderly leave which is exactly what happens after that but just as this breach is going on another side of the building among the people who were breaching the building was a woman who seems like a very young woman we've got video of her now being taken out in an ambulance you can see her in the stretcher and i think we're going to try and pull that video for you in just a little bit because i have sad news to report as we bring you this story here 3 minutes after 7 o'clock in the east coast of the united states this woman we're told has passed away. apparently she took a shot we don't know whether it was a rubber bullet or if it was a live ammunition we don't know at this point we haven't seen the autopsy report obviously we only know that several agencies including usa today and n.b.c. news and a.p. are now reporting that she has passed away becoming the 1st i imagine only at this point as far as we know casualty of this. today here in washington d.c.
7:04 pm
. so what is the situation now well it does appear that since 6 o'clock when the police officers started telling everyone to leave the capitol grounds and they've started to move them away from the streets that there are still stragglers but for the most part we are star starting to get an image of a quieter washington d.c. for confirmation of this let me go to ben swan he's my colleague better a journalist host of boom bust and he has diligently been following this story all day long ben bring us up to date. yes so as you mentioned rick it's a much quieter minus the police sirens here right there but there are very few people out right now no you know the last time we came to you all we got cut off because capitol police were moving everyone out what was happening at that moment was we saw the capitol police come essentially with their right shields and they moved everyone off the lawn of the capitol building and a large group of several 100 people remained in the street right in front and as
7:05 pm
they were in front of becoming increasingly agitated extremely angry. i want to say this you know when you i was in baltimore i was in ferguson when those riots happened there and i know you and your guests were talking earlier about what was happening and how to compare that to the kind of anger that i saw in those places is very similar rick to what i saw tonight in terms of the rage inside of people's voices and the anger they were feeling the anger towards police the anger towards capitol police the anger towards everything going on around them and so national guard did come in they are on the street right now there's several 100 of them who have been deployed to this area and right now as of right now it's quiet very few people are still out there's a few stragglers who are still walking kind of through the streets but that that level of anger has subsided as those crowds of kind of moved away there was a seeming to be a growing confrontation that might take place between capitol police and those few
7:06 pm
100 protesters who were left but it didn't happen but it was about the time the national guard showed up so right now things are much quieter out here it's a much more calm situation though we do still see people walking through the streets they're still carrying the trump flags the don't tread on the flags but it's a very different atmosphere certainly than it was over the last few hours thanks so much ben i appreciate you bringing us that report next you know what as an american citizen of this great city our nation's capital i know i speak for my neighbors when i say that we're all glad to see that everyone has a right to protest things were getting a little out of hand if i might say myself certainly not to mention not to mention the interruption of what is a constitutionally mandated process that took place today i want to bring in a dog jones she's a former georgia state representative to join our conversation you know a dog i think. as we watch this happen today it seems to me
7:07 pm
that the president of the united states was 'd. on these protesters in fact that seem quite obvious with the very 1st thing he told them today when he said he wanted to go to the capitol and protest of course he did not tell him to go breach the grounds or the building itself but how much do you put on the president the actions that we've seen today in our nation's capital including you know the fatality that we've now had to report as well in the last 15 minutes. i am not we absolutely put this in the in the right in the lap of the president not only did he encourage them to go to the capitol here's where you know that it seals the deal after the capitol was reached after this woman was shot he didn't makes a video he puts out on twitter when he tells them i love i love go home peacefully but i love you he has absolutely supported and promoted these actions
7:08 pm
and then when dates and follow through he gave them an a plus this is the most un-american thing that i've ever seen and this president has to be brought to task it's time for us it would likely be his term is over but this has to be denounced particularly by those congressional members who are supporting him in objecting electorial college they should be the very 1st ones to quickly and clearly denounce everything that has happened and pull their support from trump on that action but let's listen to the piece of audio that you just described moments ago we have it here it is it cued up it was a landslide election and everyone knows it especially the other side but you have to go home now we have to have peace we have to have law and order we have to respect our great people and law and order we don't want anybody hurt.
7:09 pm
don as i watched the president i'm sensing that he is convinced that he is going to push this forward do you expect that because of what happened today some of his supporters in congress the ted cruzes of the world who were preparing today to make this artful statement for how the president was cheated out of an election do you think tomorrow they will be less strident or maybe even reserve their comments . if they were already going to give these comments after president trump was recorded talking to my secretary of state here in georgia and asking him to find 11000 votes if that was not enough to prove and the rest who are joining this. nothing is going to convince them i would hope so you know i keep looking for opportunities for republicans to redeem themselves and help to restore all the things that donald trump has torn apart which we told them in the beginning if they
7:10 pm
elected donald trump he was not exceeded their party apart and they are. right down the rabbit hole i don't have a pick i think they're going to still get up there and with the same lie even though they know there's no evidence to support that there was any tampering here in georgia. if they started before this election last night had to see of the deal people shown and organized crime was so horrible that's why it's no use my colleague. those the. news is joining us to share perspective on this and you know it's got to the question that remains today is because of what happened today because there are people there on the republican party who are very much. and people in the republican party who are more establishment what's what what happens in the party what happens with that conflict . well this is definitely a very hard day for the republican on top of
7:11 pm
a couple of weeks of hard time for the g.o.p. as they were trying to figure out how to handle the situation going under a bitit administration now you from waking up to fighting out that obviously they don't have the control of the senate mitch mcconnell is out of power they don't have the house even though they gained a seat it's a new day for the republican party wanted to have an experience at least over 12 to 15 years this did not help. the events that happened tonight now let me just give you a background rectus because i do have lots of people that i know that were at the rally today for the last. 24 to 48 hours as so often we see when people are passionate about issues and events it was peaceful in fact i joked with my mother i feel like i'm watching an old fashioned tent revival from last night as many pastors got up there it was definitely one full of passion and no talk of this idea of violence or storming the cattle or breaking windows and then something just snapped i felt like as i was watching the events that just went through today and there is no way anybody republican democrat can defend what happened on the steps
7:12 pm
the capitol today it is unheard of and i think everyone that's why i think so immediately this is something that i was actually very very glad to see both republicans senators representatives as well as t.v. pundits anybody that had anything to do on twitter quickly didn't ounce the events that were going on and told these people that they were wrong they were not patriots they were not executing their constitutional right to protest because it's peaceable protest or what they're allowed to and that they should be arrested and fully prosecuted i think that right there showed that there is no unity right now behind what we saw happen today by the g.o.p. but will there be unity to morrow we're learning no congress is the joint session of congress and say they're going to try to get together tomorrow if the secret service lots of back into the building they're going to try and get those constitutionally mandated 'd processes affirming the by presidency do you believe and i'll ask you the same question i asked is do you believe those who are going to
7:13 pm
protest vote or protest the election of biden will be. aggressive as they had planned to be today if i can use that word. aggressive the good word republicans right now are going to have to choose their words very carefully everything they say everything they say is going to be put under a microscope so every single commentary can i do believe that there is obviously some revisions going on right now because most republicans realize that today was not a good day for them so. but once again i think all republicans even those that were outside protesting were alive nothing was going to change joe biden was still going to be confirmed today the electors are going to be confirmed this was all the pony show that we saw a formality but none of the senators thought going into it they realistically were going to keep trump in office for 4 more years scotty no hughes my thanks to you live dog jones former georgia state representative great conversation to both of
7:14 pm
you and always good to see you scotty my colleague see you here on camera we'll be back in just a minute we're going to be talking to a police officer who's going to describe to us what the strategy is now moving forward for these protesters ad what he has to say is 'd interesting in understanding exactly what police will do and it's time to do it we'll be right back. seemed wrong. but. just don't. get to see out just because that's
7:15 pm
a kid and it gets me equals betrayal. when so many find themselves worlds apart we choose to look for common ground. world is driven by shaped by one person or those. thinks. we dare to ask.
7:16 pm
elizabeth . hey welcome back it's been a team effort for us here today bringing you the news of what has happened in our nation's capital those one of those who has played a key role in our coverage throughout the day is tyrrell ventura as you know the host of watching the hawks and another one of my colleagues here in our team
7:17 pm
america is good enough to join us now for his take on what the situation is it would seem that at least looking at it right now things are starting to settle there bringing in the big guns as it were with the national guard the maryland national guard state police the maryland state police so we are going to have a lot of police visibility on the streets tonight and tomorrow one would expect things would be very calm if not quite correct oh you are very correct the least over in this part of town about for you know a couple blocks from the white house rick i'll tell you it's like you saw a lot of people out in the streets you know walking earlier chanting you know you heard all that and then a bollard the 45 hour 45 minutes after that curfew went into effect it is eerily silent on the streets right now at one point when the wind stopped blowing you almost could hear a pin drop by i am not using hyperbole it was not silent earlier. yeah you know i'm
7:18 pm
looking at the streets and i'm wondering now in hindsight of course and i know you and i have been talking about this throughout the course of the day maybe the police officers were just trying to be very cautious to not escalate the situation i know they've already received a lot of criticism for letting the breach occur but once it occurred it seemed like they just wanted to control it and not be too hard on the protesters for fear of causing a picture that would be set all over the grow all over the. globe part of america out of control it's a tough it's a tough tightrope to walk because at the same time you're also sending a picture all across the globe that look how easy it is distorting the capitol building and take it over you know so i mean i did my heart goes out to those you know to those officers who are trying to kind of keep the peace and make the right decision there hopefully many of them did we know in the past a lot don't but we just hope the in those situations the people do the best they can and act as if you act like a human being not just a law enforcement officer or
7:19 pm
a protester that you put your own humanity 1st in those situations in order to keep people safe but no matter how you look at it rick really no matter what everything looks bad you either have citizens you know storming the capitol steps and interrupting our constitutional process interrupting our democracy for the sake of their leader or you have you know if in the other side of that as you just alluded to the didn't necessarily have and was you know capitol police turning it into a bloodbath you know so it's a very ugly situation no matter how you look at it if you get a call from here but it's harder when you're there actually having to do it tyrrell as usual tyrrell ventura thank you so much man you're a good guy appreciate i know it's getting cold out there and it's been a long day for all of us so we're staying on top of this story for our viewers. one person who knows exactly how police deal with this type of situation is one of our frequent guests matthew fogg is a former u.s.
7:20 pm
marshal who joins us. so many questions for you marshall i guess the 1st one is how does it seem to you like the police today and the law enforcement officials allowed this to get away from them somehow did they or is that just our perspective . i don't know i that's 1st thing in my mind is rick is that fact that they knew this thing was coming i mean the president had tweeted everybody knew this was going to be a big didn't matter back in. a lot of discussion about how these rad his need these people were going to actually try to take over the capital so they sort of had those women force mints in place a long time ago somebody dropped the ball on this big time and that's a 1st think in my mind and then the 2nd thing is i don't i don't think anybody is shooting rubber bullets i believe these are everybody head you know live ammo india guns i desk why this lady just feel but the bottom line is i'm shocked that a whole lot more people weren't healed because of the fact that once they started
7:21 pm
breaching x. a cure of the operation most of our training is you know you shoot to kill when you stop i mean we've seen them a vehicle suit a lady in a vehicle who hit just at the barricades and a crowd on her and cured her in a cop would have children so when we see stuff like this we ask why would there is so much you know reserve why would they let nice people actually go inside the capital and then when you hear that they now are sweeping because they got a suite that alcopop bombs they got a look for all types and anything that might have been left there so it they got a really secure it in place so it just caught me by surprise it how they let this thing get out of control without having enough reinforcements there he had to let me ask you a very difficult question and i want you to think long and hard about your answer do you think it's possible that the reason they were reserved in their reaction has to do with the fact that they may share an ideology with some of the people who are
7:22 pm
protesting. you know it's hard to say from law enforcement perspective and that may grow well be true but it just seems to me that it's so that you i mean we see these protests going on around the country now we've seen incidents where people were home you would have thought you got them the most primary building in the united states capitol and the white house and those places all up there and you would have thought that when don't send out his message and people are saying hey let's go protest they would have said look we can expect anything so we're going to let these protests only get but so close that people coming in with guns and weapons you shouldn't even be no way near the capitol wouldn't would a weapon i don't care what if anything about gun rights when you want to those areas you should be carrying weapons bats but tongs so they weren't prepared but you know i answer the question really i just don't know i just noted it we have to
7:23 pm
really look at this thing from a long term perspective and try to understand why we're at a given so much leeway when normally like this it likes and i mentioned earlier that the last matter they had 3 and 4 the reinforcements of police and then we see what we saw today usually in situations like this i know you know because you're a police officer i know because i'm a long time cop beat reporter in miami and other places where i've covered riots and this turban says this is about the time you bring in the heavy guns this is about the time you bring in the alpha forces and you bring in the national guard and you literally create barricades and people cannot cross that barricade and if you have to move people you move them do you expect that tonight that will take place and by tomorrow morning there will be no protests on the streets of washington d.c. and certainly not around the capital. what the way it looks now and from looking at all the media accounts right now i'm that on the scene but it looks like they're clearing people out people are moving away from it but i can tell you here and now
7:24 pm
once most people move away from a particular angle make sure that area so secure all know by to be here tomorrow night it would be so different to morrow but right now we've got it right now we've got people still around right now now you've got a. you know a situation waiting that secure 100 percent know and to be honest with you i'm surprised that it's the congressional the legislators come back assad phyllis's this until they are 100 percent sure that there are no bombs and nothing that's been left in at that i mean in the capital or someplace all around like that so i don't see i don't see them are being a lot secure and i have way more reinforcements we hear in that the various state police some of our role as they please we here and at the f.b.i. all of these long as agents now even the u.s. marshals we've got a special operations group that i was a member that doesn't operate moving we have the riots in atlanta the riots out and when rodney king occurred so i know about the same situation when
7:25 pm
a caller said we got a minute if we got to move fast but yet a march for me is that you can best believe they don't have all lot of security i had a feeling but i'm so glad you can confirm that for us what an interesting perspective especially sharing with us that now they're going to have to do sweeps of all these buildings which would then delay any governmental process for yet another day or maybe more matthew fogg former marshal my thanks to you sure you're always a great guest to have on these types of stories thanks again thank you greg there's a bunch of new developments coming up one is fascinating twitter for the 1st time has decided that it will remove in fact it is locking out. the president of united states account. they say the president has threatened. excused violence from reading as i'm getting it excused violence and as a result they're now threatening him with a permanent suspension so that he can no longer use twitter to communicate with
7:26 pm
people who may do some of the things they allege that they have done meanwhile. apparently members of the senate are now saying they are back in washington back in the area of the capitol and will resume the electoral count at some point tonight possibly 8 pm this on president mike pence he has returned to the senate they say he never left the capital and he has been in regular contact with the house and senate leadership he says now we will finish the people's business so the president being banned from communicating the senate coming back together with the vice president and they are going to quote resume the people's business fascinating development as we learn this we go back out now to ben swann who's been following the situation a very important question to you ben if it's true and if they are able to get into the building after the building is sweep that they do all 'd the others are going every police procedures that they have to do is there any chance that this time
7:27 pm
they will be interrupted again or that there will be some kind of 'd protest outside that will stop them from finishing the quote unquote people's business. i don't think so rick i think the chances of that are almost 0 you have to remember that the majority of the people who are out here you know probably the vast majority are people ages 50 and older right that was the majority the people out here not the majority the people who tried to storm into the capitol or the people who made it in but those people are long gone and what we're looking at right now there's a few people still out here but they're getting moved out there are so many police out here right now police vans buses buses that look like school buses filled with police officers national guard who are on the. it's everywhere you turn the capitol building is completely surrounded and they're fanning out and moving people away most of these protesters wouldn't even know it was happening and there's no way they're going to have access to be able to get back even close to that building the police presence out here to call it would be
7:28 pm
a huge understatement the police presence is staggering right now around the capitol building no question about it i guess the video are the video that was sent out that the president is that is in question that twitter was angry about as badly and unfairly treated people for so long and then he told them to remember this day for ever and apparently twitter says that the problem they have with them thank you ben i'm rick sanchez actually being with us. and we'll see you want to get a news. 2021 i'm going to c n n staying phenomenon in point 21 you know america has been exporting its inflation

breaking news on the chaos and division in the heart of washington after trump supporters stormed the u.s. capitol building brings an abrupt halt to a session confirming joe biden as the winner of the 2020 election and president elect brands the riots a dark moment in u.s. history while donald trump tells his supporters to go home. threaten the safety of duly elected officials to protest his insurrection we can't play into the
