the president to order the national guard into the building the storming forced congress into lockdown right in the middle of a session confirming joe biden's victory in the presidential election.

so this is been going on now for about the last half hour what we're seeing are a series of flash bangs that keep going off it's the upper part of this this platform area over on the left hand side back towards the building i have been told by multiple people who were up there and coming down that there is a large group of people who are still scuffling with police up there at one point some of those protesters took the pepper spray away from police and pepper sprayed officers so what the police are trying to do is they're trying to clear everyone off of these stairs and they're using those flash bangs if used now probably every few minutes a day trying to kind of clear people off and to bring them down there using pepper spray and they're using flash bangs to put things one of the things that we have

learned about that young woman i have been getting some information from people who were here the young woman who was shot in the neck or head area apparently was part of 81st wave of people. who pushed it and you hear those why the way more of those flash bangs going off she was part of the 1st wave that pushed it with a group of men they pushed through the doors and one of the officers i'm told it was a female officer inside the capitol building who actually fired a weapon and then he hit her we've also been told that apparently there was another man who may have had a heart attack when he was being pepper sprayed inside of the building so i have been told there may be 2 people who are in serious condition after this i've also got to tell you i just finished talking with a guy who was part of this wave that pushed through the capitol building he was showing me videos of him going through breaking glass inside the senate chambers going through nancy pelosi office he said there were several 100 people at one

point going through nancy pelosi office sitting in the different the different chair so right now what we're seeing and what you're seeing with this the smoke is those flashing those flash bangs going off up there and it looks like the police trying to push some of these guys off of the the stairway and to move them down off of the capitol building right now where you can see. that group of officers standing up at the top that was completely full of trump supporters as of you know 3045 minutes ago slowly they've been moving these folks down so now if you look you can see these officers are starting to really move everyone off of those stairs they're moving them down now and with more force than we've seen throughout the day today this is by far the most force that we've seen in terms of moving people off of the building they pretty much let people set up there are afternoon i mean we had people sitting on the edges of of the stairwells sitting on the on the bleachers that are set up for the inauguration they were all up there for hours and

now as we look up there it's all the you know lime green officers coats and they are pushing all these folks down there. president elect joe biden condemned the unrest branding at an insurrection while president trump also posted a video on twitter urging his supporters to act peacefully and head home let's take a look at what they had to say. i call on president trump to go on national television now to fulfill his oath and defend the constitution and demand an end to this see each the storm the capitol to smash windows to occupy offices the floor of the united states senate rummaging through desks on the capitol of the house of representatives threatening the safety of duly elected officials it's not protest it's insurrection the world is watching.

like so many other americans i'm genuinely shocked and saddened that our nation so long the beacon of light and hope for democracy has come to such a dark moment we don't want anybody hurt it's a very tough period of time there's never been a time like this where such a thing happened where they could take it away from all of us from me from you from our country this was a fraudulent election but we can't play into the hands of these people. we have to have peace so go home we love you very special you've seen what happens you see the way others are treated that are so bad and so evil. i know how you feel but go home and go home and peace president trump's message you've

just seen was posted online but facebook you tube and twitter have deleted the video for breaking their rules while twitter itself was has has gone one step further and blocked trump's account the ban will last for 12 hours but if violations continue twitter says the account will be deleted in while biden supporters have gathered in times square and by trump tower in new york city urging the president not only to leave the white house but also demanding his indictment the protesters held banners and posters calling on the president to accept the results of november's election. meanwhile a number of congress members have said they will resume their session in the house once the capitol building is declared safe later but for more let's now cross live to our tease new york correspondent caleb moppin caleb thanks for joining us can you just outline for us how this all began indeed well we've seen quite

a bit of political chaos on capitol hill the trump supporters have been on capitol hill things have gotten quite crazy but we are now hearing that nancy pelosi is saying they intend to return to the halls of congress and go ahead and certify the election results this is what we heard from nancy pelosi. who we have said it we should proceed tonight at the capitol once a disclaimer to use. now it's important to note that the chaos that broke out began with a rally of trump supporters donald trump called for his supporters to come to washington d.c. for a major demonstration that would take place on the days congress was scheduled to certify the results of the election and he spoke to his supporters at that rally this is some of what donald trump said to supporters that gathered in washington d.c. before the chaos then broke out in the halls of congress. we will never give up we

will never concede it doesn't happen does anybody believe that joe had 80000000 votes says that if. he had 80000000 computer votes it takes 3rd world countries there are elections are more honest than what we've been going through in this country democrats attempted the most brazen and outrageous election set theft and this ever been a thing like this so pure theft. now at this point we will recall that as people were protesting the results of the georgia senate election came in and it was confirmed that the democrats won both seats in the u.s. senate this is leading to a situation where essentially the democrats will have control of the senate the house of representatives and the furthermore they'll have control of the executive branch when joe biden is sworn in not since 2009 have democrats had this secure of

a grip on power at the national level in the united states now when when donald trump called on mike pence to take action in congress today there was a letter that was was written by mike pence basically telling donald trump that he did not feel it was appropriate for him to try and interfere with election results he wouldn't be interfering in the u.s. senate and in the house of representatives in congress to you know interfere with the certification of the results we had donald trump calling out mike pence basically saying he was betraying him that he was weak so we have a situation where the democratic party clearly has the upper hand they won back the white house they won back the house and now the senate and at this point people are looking on and saying that this is a situation where donald trump has effectively polarized the country trumps supporters are very outspoken and very loud as we've seen today but the country seems to be rejecting them and many in the republican party and many mainstream

republican voices are blaming donald trump and the fanaticism of his movement for essentially weakening the republican party overall now a poll was taken 70 percent of republicans say that they want more of the republican party to be like donald trump however among the population at large that's certainly not the case the population is rejecting donald trump and it seems like outside of the republican party among average america. opposing trump and rallying the population against him has become almost a unifying rallying cry so we have a situation where it seems like the republican party is losing out donald trump is on the brink of losing office and leaving office all kinds of chaos on capitol hill nancy pelosi saying they will come back in and they will certify those election results regardless of the chaos that broke out of the property destruction quite a dramatic moment in american politics very very deep divide and deep political

crisis in the united states. was artie's new york correspondent thank you very much for those updates now for more insight we go live to dr michael rect unwalled ph d. professor of liberal studies author of thought criminal thank you very much for joining us dr now unprecedented events playing out right in the heart of washington today who do you think is responsible for all this including the death of a protester who's who i mean who has the blood on their hands do you think i don't i don't think you can point to any one person except in the case of the protester who was shot i mean there's a whole confluence of factors that really you are involved in this this that this eventuality that took place today not only the contested election when oen kinds of factors that have been building up and just you know have hit a tipping point today were finally something boiled over and really upset the

political order quite frankly really dramatically as you pointed out well what's your reaction to the news the twitter has now been blocked president trump's account so i mean to on block the account the president of the united states needs to delete messages that violate the rules of the social network you think twitter should get to decide which posts are legitimate and which aren't. no the bear and the keeper of the public square are the public good and i don't know who delegated them that responsibility or why they think they have that right or responsibility to be the keepers of you know a public goods they're simply a platform and they're acting like a publisher and of course they're not supposed to be acting like publishers. well what do you think has everything been building to this all along especially i mean if we could consider trump's calls to quote stop the steal of the election he's been calling the elections fraudulent do you think that this kind of rhetoric has been causing has been leading up to this moment right now for his supporters to

storm the capitol building well obviously the rhetoric had some play in this certainly certainly had a role but then there's there's just a whole lot of factors that have been building up for example you've had a seemingly politically motivated response to the corona virus which has locked down people and cost people their businesses and jobs you've had a protracted riots throughout that's from the summer all the way to the present day you've had you know the. constant attempts on the part of both parties but it peculiar to the democrats to the road to ruin trumps presidency from the very start and then you have trump's rhetoric certainly feeding into this and i think all these factors together just brought this contingent to a very high fever pitch and such that they went this far it's really astounding. we've been seeing a lot of political violence in the united states over the past several months and

we've been showing pictures from washington right now where there's a curfew and the national guard has been deployed and these protesters are still there protesting you know rejecting the curfew do you think these events could be a turning point and if you do which way do you think it will go will these protesters step back or step up their campaigns do you think it's going to lead to more political violence i think this is definitely a turning point we've reached a point here in our history and i think politically there's going to be a major shift i can't tell exactly where it's going to go but i do think that it possibly signals the end of the trumpet era in the sense that this event will be used as a as a way of utterly discrediting the trump movement so much that everything but is associated with it will be associated with this particular event and there will be discredited entirely and therefore the movement may fall apart or it may gain more

to the mits it's hard to say which way this is going to go but it's either make or break for trump and his movement that was left of this event i mean you know it's very possible that many republicans could break with trump's you know faction of the party those who support trump in the republican party do you think we may be looking at to political situation where it's trump supporters against the system rather than republicans and democrats. that's what i think it is right now anyway it's trump's party versus the best political establishment of such and this is been developing over you know several years now where it's finally consolidated into place so much that it's firmly the case that it's trouble cans versus the establishment this is not republicans versus democrats this is not left versus right this is. this contingent of the people as they would call themselves versus

this political establishment would say associate with what's called the deep state what they see as globalism what they see as an attempt to basically erode and destroy the sovereignty of the united states so this is really what's been put in it's finally consolidated into a solid block there's no love for republicans among the trump supporters are all moving away from trump right now and and more to biden what kind of president do you think that this event sets for biden potential you know likely future administration i mean his inauguration is planned for later this month and he's expected to become president what do you think this is you know foreshadowing. well it's a gift for him and in fact it's putting a put a gift on a silver platter for him to to pick up and say look this has been in fantasy i'm finally coming in to get you know to bring sanity to the political sphere to settle the nation to you know heal the divide are already going to put it whether he's

able to pick up this gift and really weren't run with it is another matter i think that he'll have troubles of his own there are many things on the horizon that are brewing for enormous debt there's going to be economic problems if it's specially if we move into another lockdown phase so there's going to be on the other thing is central have both houses every problem that does develop will be on his on his head he warm out be able to use any excuses such as the republicans in the senate or any of that it will be basically all on him. well as you were saying before you know you're mentioning that you know it's this really seems like a trump and its supporters against the system kind of situation here what do you think it says this all says about the divisions in the country is it just a you know where are the lines drawn. it's a really deep divide with this is this is very deep we're talking about something that goes to absolutely fundamental values and principles and that divide

is this is more or less the intelligentsia and the elite and. and the media you know and everyone amongst those verses the holy poloi who are deemed to be the shit you know unwashed masses and the unwashed masses have a lot of pride and they think they are the the holders of the system of the republican of the republic's values in the principles of the united states so that's really where the divide comes in between those who are considered sort of deep loyalists to the american project and those who basically in some sense reject it or see it needing a great deal of revision. well i just want to ask you one more question here to be honest taking a bit of a step back from politics as a whole i mean the we're looking at the fact that one of the most important buildings in the united states was just breached by protesters what how massive of

a security failure do you think that is it's a big security for the security failure but at the symbolic shock i have to say. you know i seek to explain rather than condemn or condone what happened and even with that attitude i'm less in shock about what's taken place it's it's a major. it's a major blow to the psyche of the american public i mean and if they don't feel it yet they certainly will but it does represent a symbolic breach of sorts and i think it's significant i don't know what use will be made of it but it's definitely a major possible moment. dr michael michael rect and walter ph d. professor of liberal studies author of thought criminal thank you very much for joining us on the program your insight and. let's get a wider perspective on what's going on i'm joined by our correspondent maria

building interrupting a very important event. for saying look down it's not every day that you see vice president evacuate and the whole 7 chembur evacuated national guards on the ground you know i mean all these madness that you've been talking about in the last hours covering these events and speaking about international reaction obviously what we hear from most of the politicians now is that they condemn the k. is how they describe the chaos in washington d.c. here is nato secretary general mr stoltenberg saying that shocking scenes in washington d.c. with haunting green more and he adds on tweeter by the way most of the reaction we have from tweeter that very tweeted that blog. and threaten to block it forever is some rules i'm not mad so mrs bolton is adding the outcome of the democratic elections in america should be respected and here are some more politicians describing the situation in america right now in quite

similar words. shank's mind the scenes in washington d.c. this is not acceptable assault on democracy a peaceful and orderly transfer of power must be ensured the violent acts against american institutions are a grave attack against democracy i condemn them the american people's wheel and vote must be respected this graceful scenes and u.s. congress the united states stands for democracy around the world that it is no vital that there should be a place for orderly transfer of power. and here's also german foreign minister and this is rather alarming for me but i con george calling on german citizens currently in washington d.c. to stay away from the sea to downtown because apparently it could be dangerous and it could be dangerous we've seen picturised i mean tear gas used inside the capitol building in that crowd it's very huge 1st of all very loud it looks aggressive and you know right now police confirm that that one woman one protester died in prose

and that's just what we know maybe there are more victims and we just don't know about them. as you remember the protesters breached the capitol building at the time when the debate over certifying the election was taking place there and interesting is that the congress spent were not able to finish what they were supposed to do to further president elect joe biden's victory and we now hear that recount of the votes may start very soon in a matter of minutes or hours so we are waiting for that and curfew is on the ground now as far as i know for at least 11 more hours it's madness right or you know it is one thing to see you know the videos of everything that's going on and then also hear these very strong descriptions that some high profile officials in the united states have been using to describe this i mean we heard from joe biden who called it an insurrection new york's governor andrew cuomo called it a quote failed coup attempt so what about russian reactions what are you what are

russians doing watching tell that watching this on television and what are they thinking yeah 1st of all we don't still have yet any official reaction from all we eat you right to mention that russia is a watching t.v. all the tonight russian all of them to deliver is celebrating christmas and they're supposed to be at their mass in the churches but most of them are indeed watching t.v. and it's 3 am it's 4 am right now here in moscow and what watching t.v. because the content their eyes all of these events i mean they're. following all coverage is why because the con believe it happening you know this is what i got. talking to my family my friends and people on the streets i mean looking through their opinions on social media they are just shocked although most western media sometimes refer to russia as 3rd world country most russians they respect america and look at it as
