in the world transformed. what will make you feel safe. isolation in the community. are you going the right way or are you being led. by. what is true. is faith. in the world corrupted you need to descend. to join us in the depths. or a maybe in the shallows. this is boom bust the one business show you can't afford to miss unfair montecito going
5:31 am
to washington coming out the big tech band conversation continues as social media giants face one of our clash on purging account we have former republican congressman ron paul discussing his experience with facebook and a panel discussion later on on the president's twitter ban and what this means for the future of regulation we have a lot to get to so let's get started. we begin the show with the wild week with big tack what began with a president donald trump twitter ban has led to purging of social media accounts some without notice well our next guest lost access to his facebook account citing a violation of community standards but it appears no details were provided so let's welcome our republican congressman ron paul congressman thank you so much for being with us today can you start by just explaining to us what happened in your situation here with facebook. you know risk. by surprise i guess is about 2 days
5:32 am
ago that i arrived and to stay off looks at the. you know the website right away they say they've cut us off there which was a surprise to me because it's something. for me personally it's it's an article that i do every day every week and i thought it was an article defending the liberty i've been doing it every week since 1906 have never had any controversy related to it and all of a sudden they said you don't follow community standards and i was just dumbfounded because you know the terminology is so weird who establishes you know community standards and one station they interview in this and i was kidding and i said which way do i do it i get the standard for vox or do i go to c.n.n. their image isn't going to see to find out what communities and theirs are where it was bizarre or absurd and there were a few people including and some good organizations when it started it and then the
5:33 am
next day they say. looks like we made a mistake we're letting you go back on again but the intimidation is there we we fell intimidated even before that happened so you can imagine how many other people are involved and i've been exposed to this it doesn't sound like it's proof the men that ball the frustration over just being bad over something similar situations i have seen across the board especially as of late with this person there doing i believe a facebook spokesperson did say let me read you this quote while there were never any restrictions on ron paul's page we restricted one adamant ability to post by mistake we have corrected the error what did they say the supposedly the error was even in the 1st place you know they never would tell us but i felt restricted i couldn't add anything and i couldn't change anything but they didn't take anything off as a way i understand it but it didn't. make any sense and i talked about this one
5:34 am
item and i didn't at one time on that since i wasn't sure whether they were talking about some item on my staff or some item some individual you know with facebook or just what was going on but the whole thing was just you know anti-american for that matter you know intimidation and all of a sudden challenging what we were doing and then this whole thing is you know when they when you try to pin them down or you look at it between the lines you know they're talking about people who are advocating violence and anybody who knows me you know with my libertarian believes i am very very pro peace a you are considered too much for peace because you know but that that is what is so ridiculous about it to say that oh sometimes people express terrorism on these sites and they didn't do they didn't accuse me of that but death is sort of thrown in the basket like that they when you when you do these things they they say don't mistake terrorism we have to watch and we have to protect the community so it's you
5:35 am
know it's such a distortion of when the article at $230.00 was established it was supposed to sort of guide those companies so that they would make sure that everybody had access to but what has turned out now that big companies big tech this has given them license to regulate us and keep out the people not allow the people come in and make use of it so it's really been messed up and i'm afraid i'm afraid that it's going to be a while but i'm still optimistic that technology is going to come along and there's going to be alternatives and stations still do exist that allow us to speak like your station so it has to be used but we can't be complacent about it but of course i'm in the business of just spreading information and i wish people would think that it's a decent bit of the been from a just promoting peace and you know prosperity that's what it stands for is to to for peace and prosperity why. why should that be
5:36 am
a threat to anybody i think individuals that run those companies are easily threatened i think they're in secure they have all the money in the world and you know that they have all the power and all of these things but they still feel like don't let anybody speak and i keep thinking you know i will little outfit why would they come and they will weigh me and try to intimidate me and on so you know they do it to other people but i think it's an incentive for people to look for our time to do and i don't know the technology but i'm a believer in technology i believe that people who are are aware of what's going on now will develop technology that will be available to an individual like myself so that we can have the safety and security of expressing ourselves at the same time you know having decent rules and regulations of true advocacy of violence and you know in some ways to me in my mind is sort of like what you just treated like a newspaper and news newspapers can just slander people at the same time there's
5:37 am
a fair respect for freedom of speech well much like you said it especially when their community guidelines or their standards are so rare we've talked about this before here on the show where we want to see this competition it's almost like they're obviously trying to keep that competition out of control of this all of the social media 10 years ago the start up firms of facebook and twitter they were relatively small that working sites now they've obviously become the these platforms for government and notable think here figures just as yourself to communicate to the public like you said you want to get your message out since tech platforms have become so central for communication how should government think about these channels do you think that they should be regulated more than they are now. well i don't i don't think you know reform and new regulations will do it because my beef is is this thing we're dealing with big tech has been. in the guard
5:38 am
in guided by big government i mean how did the internet get started and who cooperates with big tech government they use it for security purposes you know they're they're sort of in bed together they receive money from government that is the taxpayer because they are providing a service and so i i don't think the government now that they big tech has learned to make a lot of money and the technology is protecting them but i think it's going to change i think people are going to get so upset i think we've seen it this week some of the stocks of the big tech companies actually went down it is not automatic and it's not automatic that the people will remain complacent forever and i think there will be choices out there and if it comes to a point where there is 0 choices our country's in bad shape and i don't think we're that bad off but complacency has allowed us to get to this point where they feel you know encouraged to do whatever they want and there are many and they make
5:39 am
a lot of money at it and i think people need just to wake up well congressman do you see any where do you see the future of tax companies like twitter and facebook going. well hopefully they get smaller and smaller and lose their influence as they have because competition because as soon as they see you know they want to crack down of a think i'm participating competition you know they'll go after anybody you know for that but i think long term but i don't you know some people don't need more laws we need to have laws against you know antitrust laws and their size is just too big. i don't think that's going to do it because they control the legislative process they will they will have and they will have legislation but they'll be a little obvious and they will god will be able to write it they write all this stuff so if there's any type of regulation they'll be involved so that's why i look toward the private sector and literally preserving anough liver. that's my goal
5:40 am
where individuals can be creative enough that they can just really be competitors and when the people get sick and tired of it and believe me that's what i sense there's a lot of people now waking up and knowing what's happening and i think what's also going to precipitate this is the need for the internet to be obstructed because i think our economy is going to get so much worse and there's going to be people for looking to get their information out right now you know it's ok and information and that's what bothers me the most because there's no really freedom of choice in what we get in generally speaking and this internet is sort of monolithic and sort of lay on it lay it out there heard by to accept 3rd reject it things are getting much worse people are getting angry and hopefully this will somehow have people get out of and create that competition we're talking about former and u.s. republican congressman ron paul we really appreciate you making time to join us today it's always great talking to you. thank you nice to be with you. all the back
5:41 am
and forth over tech censorship is also leading to a new discussions of reigning in tech companies and users abandoning some of the largest platforms in the world joining me now to discuss his boom bust co-host of. one and international regulatory attorney miles edwards miles and start with you we know that several world leaders have come out against this permanent ban of president trump why is it why is that and what is this going to lead to. who. who. who. who. sort of you are who are. who. you know this is well known.
5:42 am
and so what they say you know that means you're flying along an open architecture far from where people should be through express insults another scene it's literally the size of the room and they really are stifling and sort of well ben twitter c.e.o. jack dorsey he defended the decision to ban donald trump but he also said that he's concerned about this long term effects that bands could have to buy that. i absolutely do not buy it look jack dorsey walks around with that ridiculous you know rumpelstiltskin beard of his and he is making statements that make no sense whatsoever he's saying in this moment we were right to completely remove from our platform the sitting president of the united states because of 2 tweets which by the way if you go back and read the tweets one tweet essentially said that trump would not allow his supporters to be bullied and number 2 that he would not attend
5:43 am
the inauguration of by those with the tweets at twitter so they were going to permanently banned him over they were not called for violence in fact with twitter said was you have to take those tweets not what they specifically say but in the broader context of what they say which basically means out of context take them out of context and then you can understand so but at the same time jack dorsey trying to have a both ways and this goes back to what miles was talking about because there's such a backlash especially among foreign leaders right now who say what are you guys doing over there that he now says well in terms of the big picture for social media companies this could be problematic i tell you what's problematic since the permanent ban of trump on twitter facebook you tube snapchat you name it between those big companies there has been $51000000000.00 in market value that has been erased since their band president dropped $51000000000.00 collectively now these companies are worth a lot of money so that's not a huge amount but it is a significant amount in such a short amount of time and i expect to see it continue in that way always we've
5:44 am
seen president tweet much worth. this and for them to have made the decision over this and it's just mind boggling miles meanwhile f.c.c. chairman said he's abandoning a proposal to even limit the liability shield for social media companies that president trump has requested that he's saying he doesn't have enough time to pursue it what are the chances here that any incoming f.c.c. chairman is going to take action. well the person in the biden support which is the now you have a commission that basically split the 2 republican nominees into democratic nominee so it was going to happen is legislation will have that i believe him or her order who are 21 to look at this little patient on liability and it's also going to try to get through the commission as well but the problem is follow the money if you look to see what the largest social media companies contributed to by them
5:45 am
including twitter to $3000000.00 you really have to follow the money so even though the goals are great about winning why those are the the congress are going to be a lobbyist and in a while a situation where our politicians are not to be concerned continual local donations from the social media companies they evaporate if they become too restrictive are especially if they go ahead and start looking at the liability issue 'd right now looks like that's exactly what they're trying to do ben little less than a minute left what's happening asian all these marketing scrambles and india is what up facing a serious challenge from other messaging apps. you know what's up is in is in trouble here they're spending tens of millions of rupees right now to try to put together a marketing campaign essentially telling the indian people that you can trust us when they don't they're not being trusted right now we're watching signal picking up 25000000 users in 72 hours what we're watching the telegram does that signals
5:46 am
picking up 7 new users a day that serious competition and one more note to what miles was talking about about the by administration heap in mind there are a lot of people from the tech space microsoft google facebook and apple who are now going to work in a biden administration these tech companies are literally planting their people inside that administration in order to protect themselves in the future well i'm not going to see much change then at least for now but america has spent on an international regulatory attorney miles edward thank you both for your time today. time now for break but when we come back to us an employment claim 3rd in the wrong direction as global economies struggle to find a stable recovery we have an expert panel standing by as we go to break here the numbers at the close.
5:47 am
i got this 8 millimeter film purely by accident. time period 963 to 65 place damascus. i don't don't know why young. i've watched it many times a man posing the monuments and all poster of the hollywood premiere of town without pity and a fight in a minute so with bruises. i had my doubts if i should waste my time on this but i came back to that film over and over again tracing a sequence of events happening in syria at that time and most of those who worked there the moment on radio. which you'll see in the neil curiosity is like
5:48 am
a petrol motion machine did lives on without a lunch break and then suddenly i saw him stop let's take another look now at low speed this is key like cohen a super spy who some consider a national hero and others and evil villain an israeli double 00. lead. because of the blood some. at the one shore still. she left no trace. of trace sure that you're being silent just your triggers are. to be used to call the 5 minutes for you to draw an audience to play when the ball should brace that.
5:49 am
the us saw its worst unemployment numbers last week as it reached a 5 month high 965000 americans filed for unemployment last week much worse than the expected 800000 all the increase in these claims came mostly from states with tighter restrictions on businesses despite these claims markets are hitting record highs as investors are eyeing more stimulus coming from washington with president elect joe biden stimulus package for more we're joined by boone was co-host chrystia partner and director of trading research and education for a market gave dot com michelle schneider michelle let's start with you how much worse are things going to get before we turn the corner here and while the market seems to kind of shrug off these unemployment numbers with more stimulus around the corner how can the economy actually recover when so many americans are still out of work. well in terms of things getting worse i actually believe that what the market
5:50 am
is trying to tell us bang us over the heads with is that things will improve so it's unfortunate that we saw those numbers today but they are lagging indicators so that's one thing to consider in terms of what needs to be done for the market and for the economy to grow from here if i didn't ministration call me today obviously this is would be a great question for somebody who trades because what i would say is besides obviously the stimulus that they're planning to do which we need especially for those who are still claiming unemployment benefits and the vaccinations obviously have to continue to roll out there's been some clogs in the way we have to clear those clouds you have to make sure they get to people we live in a state by the way where a lot of businesses aren't open yet like restaurants are still only allowed to do take out we need to get those businesses open we need to get the mass will to be more in force we need to do more home testing and get those home tests affordable and easily access with quick results and i also think that we need to have some
5:51 am
tests required before we do things like travel or go places where we can possibly infect people i know people find that to be upsetting when you have to do anything and you have to get abuse or not as porton ordered to travel so this would just be another thing all for the sake of getting the economy open plus infrastructure i'd love to see an infrastructure built that would create a lot of jobs and boost the morale of the country and finally legalize marijuana cannabis it's what the country wants it would actually create a tremendous amount of opportunity on all aspects of the economy from the sales of this regime to the growing to the marketing with a lot of these cases surging like you're saying as they're trying to do something at least increase in testing like you said getting the vaccine although we're even behind in that but speaking of the biden stimulus a christie that supposed to be released thursday the proposal at least what do we expect to see in the stimulus and how soon is it going to be passed investors are keeping a close eye on this. yeah well it's
5:52 am
a widely expected that biden will push for more direct cash to americans and also extend the supplemental have insurance so vaccine distribution funds as well as additional relief and support for state and local government are also a top priority for the administration however there is a lot of skepticism about the proposed $2000.00 direct payments to americans because the cost of it the total package is rumored to be somewhere between one to 2 trillion dollars and so as for when it will get passed that's hard to say because democrats hold a slim majority in the house but it could mean the republican support to pass the bill and while the bidens party will control the senate later this month it will need 10 g.o.p. votes in order to approve legislation unless it is a procedure called budget reconciliation that requires a majority vote so the slim democratic majorities in both chambers could create some headaches for biden as it will leave a very stern margin for error is to pass legislation the party will either have to
5:53 am
win full support from all of its members or earn some republican votes in order to approve economides package and right now according to goldman sachs it is not clear that all the democrats would support a near term relief bill that cost $2.00 trillion dollars that's a lot of money that's exactly right a lot of democrats haven't said that they're on board or not with that with the stimulus michele earnings week is starting and we 1st have reports from delta who reported it lost a record 12400000000 dollars last year what's the outlook for the rest of the airline industry for 2021 we saw airline stocks do pretty well today. well delta also said that obviously they're much more optimistic for a 2021 and again that's the key so when i was looking at some of the actions that the airlines are doing already and will continue to do as we go on this is a changing world so it's great that we see the innovation through technology but also some very practical things number one is that we are doing cabin roof reef
5:54 am
reconfigurations which is something that i think would help they're looking at having sex knology and i recognition through either palm or through facial recognition to get the whole security going through security much faster now looking at using robots to get a sense for passengers and so bio metrics cloud based technology really basically this is a time when we're looking at the people who are really the most innovative in terms of technology helping the airlines get to that place they've got a lot of government money they may get more in the stimulus package i don't really know the details of all of that but again we have to continue with masks vaccines and i know that in some places now before you travel you have to prove that you're negative 3 days before you get on the plane they're used to doing that especially for international travel right now as these new strains of the virus that are transmissible are surging kristie lots of such over to chinese trade surplus that hit an all time high on soaring pandemic good export this is despite the escalating
5:55 am
tension throughout the trumpet ministration that we've seen do you expect relations to get better with the incoming by the administration that been pretty quiet as of as of lately pretty tamed. you know that kind of remains to be seen because after all the escalation from washington during the trump and mystery show there has been a lot of walls put up and trust broken so there have 1st needs to be a lot of repairing of the relationship that needs to be done before things can actually get better again so it's so unclear what by this policy towards china will be i think it will certainly be more predictable but i don't think you actually reverse the course that compounds put american on in terms of you in china as a potential threat and competitor especially when it comes to sectors like high tech and so i mean it's so industry watchers had hoped that the transition from trying to buy them with sort of ease tensions but i don't think that we'll see any major policy changes anytime soon due to the rival efforts by the superpower to control the technologies and at the heart of all this is in some of conductors
5:56 am
industries that is the technology that will create the value base as both nations brings to control the supply of the output and the development of the latest chips and machines so as for trade and general china's economic recovery seems to be basically dominated by strong external demand exports jumped in the 1st quarter partly due to a stronger u.s. demand the chinese exports to the u.s. jumped 34.5 percent in december from a year earlier so for the full year the trade surplus with the u.s. was at $317000000000.00 which is 17 percent higher than in 2019 so like what we've been saying all along trade wars are very ineffective and then you don't actually bring down the trade surplus definitely hurt the u.s. and other brought back what president bush was fighting for the whole time american jobs bill must co-host christi i and michelle schneider of the market gauge group thank you so much for joining us today. thank you. for this time on demand.
5:57 am
