establishing islam is a religion that is in crisis today all over the world we don't just see it in our country yet they don't listen the will of the islamists is precisely to turn our citizens against the republic using their religion and we cannot let that happen when the attack on sign or pattern triggered a crackdown against extremist mosques and is necessary she ations we heard from fatty security he's the president of the paris space islamic confederation which is against macros charter and told us why. always look at that you know we disagree on a number of matters one being the group this charter was to be addressed to at the beginning it was about drafting a charter republican principles of the national council of so it was supposed to concern and mosques here we find ourselves with the charter of principles of islam and france and the failure to make the proper distinctions run many paragraphs anyway asking muslims explicitly to clarify their position on subjects that are of

10:10 am
people across russia have been on the streets protesting this saturday morning for the release of the opposition activists alexina valmy mr attained last weekend upon his return home from germany violating the terms of his parole port's now from the rally in central moscow it is getting a little bit hectic because the police special forces have begun at least their initial attempts to clear out of this square which has been completely packed for about an hour now so people have been trying to escape the security forces. through this corner as well we managed to keep our vantage point but no we're not sure how much longer we will be able to do that because there's a lot of people it's a huge crowd it's very very packed so it's difficult to let people through here not be taken away with this flood of protesters now it does feel like there's a good few 1000 people here although i haven't seen any official of figures as of
10:11 am
yet as to how many people have showed up here in the heart of the russian capital and now there has been some movement also i'd sit quite snowy here in moscow right now so people have been actually throwing snowballs at police officers as they were detaining people because we have seen some of detentions some scuffles fighting between the protesters and the police and people were taken and well taken into custody now when it comes to the police response of rather staying with that there's a constant message being played through a megaphone that is right over there calling on the people to disperse saying that it is this rally has not been authorized and also reminding people of the coronavirus situation here because obviously social distancing is not a thing here and those even a police officer who was handing out masks at the very beginning of the protest
10:12 am
have all of. you. must. know by. the past. 3. years. there's a fear. so you could hear that some people saw a surgical mask as a symbol of oppression from the authorities now well people here right now they aren't going anywhere so essentially they will if the police want them gone they will have to force them out of which they are doing i should say also also when it comes to the amount of people and to how they have been behaving in general
10:13 am
they have been chanting slogans like shame. freedom calling on the release of alexina vali prominent opposition figure here in russia also they've been calling for the resignation of the russian president vladimir putin which is a traditional traditional thing a traditional chant during protests like this some protesters also climb to these street lights and you could put you i'm not sure if you can but you could probably see that they left their banners there. ok well that was reporting for us and we can i speak to independent journalists even it was also that protest in central moscow new be good to get your thoughts on this even because. you was report he said that there were scuffles have read some western media they said look no violence plenty of people getting arrested and it wasn't pretty but what was your sort of general assessment of what you saw today you know
10:14 am
i think it depends how you define pretty how the arrests were performed basically arrived at 12 so 2 hours before the protests began in order to have a sense of the scene to be there in time to make sure i did not miss anything from early on there were police fans advising as was mentioned in the report people to mask up. from about 2 pm. place fans started broadcasting warnings for the crowds to disperse because it was not a sanctioned protest and that those. warnings continue throughout the entirety of the protest however i was surprised to see that protesters were convened in the square in pushkin square and periodical chanting and cheering for a good hour and a half before the police took me in measures to clear the square when they did that they did it in waves they approached you know forming a line and generally pushing the crowd back and doing that repeatedly until the
10:15 am
protests were pushed further and further back i did see baton being used but i did not see the kind of excessive violence that i would see in protest for example in france yellow vests i'm sure many people are aware of the very excessive police brutality used against protesters there or in other cities even recent times in cities in the u.k. and the u.s. where people have been protesting coronavirus has been crying virus measures and there has been an excess of those protests so i would say in my from what i could see from where i was positioned i could not compare those types of protests to what i saw today and you pointed out quite rightly that these rallies that took place across russia were unsanctioned people turning out were doing so we legally but a difference i suppose people would know between this and yellow vest is that there was no violence today it was nothing orchestrated to. buildings being set on fire and windows being smashed given that do you think that the police could have been
10:16 am
more restrained. i don't see how they should have been more restrained basically as you just said the protests were unsanctioned and police anywhere in any country around the world if there is an un sanction and sanctioned protest will clear it out usually by a very violent means again all that i saw in my position where i was standing although i did walk around the square as much as i could were people being forced out again when pleas for mines and people being carried away in some instances in many cases people being. ushered away like this which was not in my view of college at all and i just want to know not all of the all of us protest began with any sort of violence but they were met with extreme pleas for talent you know you were protests. a couple of years ago or at least back in 2019 it was only the state duma elections. how do the 2 compare i mean did you see a lot of similarities between what was going on today back then back then so i went actually there there's
10:17 am
a few similarities i want to mention but in terms of the protest itself. because at the time western media had been part of the test and excessive police brutality so i wanted to see for myself whether that was the case the protest i attended was august i forget 10th or so 2019 i went again early to the area where the process was being held and i stayed for the duration of the protest which was a sanction to protest and saw no violence whatsoever the crowd was fairly calm again were periodic cheers but there was no violence from either side after that protest there was an unsanctioned protest which western media decided to call a walk instead of a protest which is something that was employed today as well and that protest ended up at moscow. and i don't know what kind of police they were but they did clear that square out very quickly again using the same tactics i've talked about today so those were similarities but i would like to note that in both cases today and
10:18 am
previous protests the u.s. embassy in russia and moscow has advertised the protest times and the group is clear you can argue that they're just trying to warn u.s. citizens not to be near those protests or it could be seen that this is an advertisement for civil unrest in russia do you expect these protests to continue then i do i mean we see in the change of the president in the united states the buy it in. a very pro-war regime and there's certainly going to be an uptake in anti russian warmongering media spin and i think that you know they just have the backing of the west so i think that we will see more protests in the usual attempts to paint scenes of chaos in russia paint scenes of you know mass this. satisfaction in the country. but in my experience those scenes that are depicted by western media are not what is actually on the ground not what people on that how do you
10:19 am
assess them what's going on in the ground because i mean i take your point when you look at western media this is screaming headline. generally you put everything into context how would you describe it well one thing i noticed with the protests in 29000 and today there are a lot of young people and on the one hand you could commend young people for being politically aware but i don't really see that's the case and of course i have to add the caveat that i don't speak russian but based on other reporters reporting that i saw in the 21000 protest it seemed like it's not a good number of young people that turned out didn't really have much of an understanding of what they were there supporting today they might they might well know that they're supporting of all me but there were not just in moscow protests but i've seen on twitter they were in various cities across russia very young people from ages 12 perhaps lower or older which is strange to me because at that age you don't really have a political awareness so it seems like if you want to be on this look at things
10:20 am
from a cynical perspective seems like tilden might be being used in these in this political game in order to paint to the western world scenes of the entire mass of russia uprising you know in support of an appalling who was arrested for i believe his for breaching his bail so actually a perfectly legitimate reason and who returned to russia knowing full well he would be arrested so again that seems to me that this is more of a sense more about political theater and it is about a genuine you know will of people on the ground for whatever it is demanding ok interesting. thanks very much for coming in that was independent journalist eva . approach to. thank you. well earlier hundreds turned out from an unsanctioned rally in valley for stock in russia's far east bringing the center the city center there to
10:21 am
a standstill police did use force to disperse the crowd detaining dozens of protesters some of those taking part as we discussed there appear to have been school children well under the age of 18 russians on policeman for children has denounced what she described as opposition activists using youngsters as a human shield against the police similar things played out in the city of chita to go on a much smaller scale with a few 100 demonstrators there taking part marches have been happening across the country day with the main focus on moscow none of those rallies as we mentioned have been authorized and at a protest and caused me ask the police to try to reason with some of the younger protesters. who. have appeared right here. if you were there to. cover it for. you of course you know if you. are.
10:22 am
all right. well the russian foreign ministry has singled out the u.s. for encouraging the protests with a spokesman reason out of a highlighting how the american embassy and the conscience and russia gave protesters instructions online yesterday the u.s. embassy in moscow published routes of protests in russian cities and to an information about a march on the kremlin what was its instruction even the organizers did not announce such plans you can imagine what would happen if the russian embassy in washington d.c. published a map of protest through syndicating to you and point for example in the capital you can imagine what would happen if the russian embassy in washington d.c. published a map of protesters syndicating the end point for example in the capital. one of the taste of things to come perhaps after britain recently left the e.u. or britain living in spain and working in the u.k.

controlled enclave of gibraltar has had his shopping bag emptied by spanish border guards must forced to leave behind much of its contents at the border it is an individual case but it does highlight the change of rules for britons trying to enter the. usually you just walk straight well they might be out check it. out call tobacco whatever. they showed them a bag and they they took the time to look for a little bit more caffeine than we normally day and they started back probably this guy pulling everything out after checking a few items they basically just told me that the majority of this you can't take through because it has processed vegetables on it and saying that they were going to essentially just put them in the vent. welcome discussion was in keeping with the travel guidelines it does prohibit travelers from bringing maint dairy products and process vegetables from non member state among the things that got the briton to trouble there was processed onions in a spicy sauce to try to make the best of

a bad situation i would venture selling the paper products at a loss on line but i think it's reasonable i had a brief conversation with one of the guards in the in the office that made my point if i can take these items it seems to me that would be more like large quantities not for signal items and there was no documentation to support a fact at least my knowledge of the sign that i can take these things over so. if this is already happening in the 1st week after bret's it then yeah our program enters a bait a few a few other issues. as it stands going forward i think at the moment we're still in which a bolter is actually having to negotiate an agreement with spain due to us being left out of the bracks g.'s my surroundings and some things i was going through the time for just moving around a lot i didn't get. a really wish i had had i voted as
10:25 am
a set of really wish i had i would have stood with the 9097 percent of gibraltar that chose to remain because that i didn't really see any benefit whatsoever for us to leave the european union. meanwhile around has broken out after the ambassador to britain mr knight for diplomatic status a london insists though it's not obliged to treat representatives of international bodies the same as foreign diplomats working for nation states but best london does change track the new ambassador won't be able to get approval by the queen as head of a diplomatic mission you case decision is at odds to with the way the blocks representatives are treated in most of the countries and london's move doesn't sit well with brussels we are not the national religion of the ozols we have a union i think it would be a virus in my view too for do you care to find. what britain's foreign office has tried to smooth things over and does say that the representative will receive quote

the privileges and immunities necessary to carry out their work in the u.k. effectively however political commentator john fryer does believe that london's approach could actually backfire. i think this is a rainy sad position that the british government has taken because after all we were members of the european union for nearly 50 years and brags that a part is not enough they now want to downgrade the status of the european union and although more than $150.00 countries around the world give thole diplomatic privileges to iran bassa does under the vienna convention and this is the situation that he's landed to sit in now with the government surrounded by cabinet ministers who support this nationalistic break z.t. airline which is actually not a toll championing britain's global role as he would see it the diminishing

time afshin rattansi welcome to another lockdown edition of going on the ground in a week of the inauguration of the 46th president of the usa joe biden hailed and heralded all around nato nation media but joining me now is the legend that is the publisher of tribune and the founding editor of jacobin buskers and caro thanks so much for coming on he joins me now from new york i'm going to start by saying what do you make of the inauguration we saw lady gaga wearing a brooch depicting what looked to me like the piece of code in a spanish banks because so how optimistic are you. well i should say that
10:29 am
i certainly as a socialist i'm used to being perpetual opposition i think if you're a good socialist in the united states given the horrors perpetuated by the us economic system at home and the horrors perpetrated a broad one is used to a posture of opposition i honestly would rather be in opposition to i joe biden i ben to donald trump i think joe biden is more susceptible to pressure and saying that isn't really much of a credit to joe biden either as a human being or has certainly his political history which is quite a sword one but it is a credit to the fact that due to the fact that he has a social base that is disproportionately rooted in minority communities and so on there is some room to be in opposition and to pressure from the outside but i get that that optimism is very cautious very guarded most of all i'm just glad that the

culture war of the last 4 years might possibly be over a recess a pathway to and again i think both the liberalism and conservatism in the us have been driving themselves to the brink of evan sanity and it's going to be on that he seemingly moving beyond some of that and send it while being on one's god could arguably be. justified and he will justify suspicion of maybe virtue signaling of moving up the bust of winston churchill infamous for the famines in the global south and putting in say chavez but even you presumably were impressed by these a 2nd what is announced within hours of him taking the oath x.l. keystone pipeline paris climate change must mandate no arctic drilling and he races in the dream i am a good bro.
