states are following suit amid soaring case numbers and a severe shortage of vaccines the czech republic is banning non-essential cross border travel and portugal has closed its land border with spain our europe correspondent peter oliver reports on the latest steps from germany. this weekend tough new restrictions on travelers coming into germany from 7 different countries will come into place from saturday they're already here when it comes to travelers arriving for me you men the states ireland and portugal as well as those coming from the united kingdom brazil and south africa from sunday that list will grow to 7 to include the african nations of s. what danny and lee so to the reason these have been put in place is that these nations have seen rises and the infections of mutated variants of the corona virus the german interior minister the horse and say hoff said before they were officially put in place that germany would have to do they speak because there

wasn't a unified e.u. solution on the horizon. from considering all the information we have we do not expect there to be european solution that would meet or expect a sions in the near future that is why we are preparing as a nation there are some exceptions for those coming into germany german citizens and permanent residents will be allowed to arrive from those nations on that list transit passengers and those travelling to do with the movement of goods will also be permitted to travel but those are the exceptional circumstances that have been granted by the the german side it hasn't gone down well politically with the opposition here in germany the greens have called it an affront to germany's e.u. partners for berlin to act unilaterally in this way while the free democrats have said that it basically covers up the fact that the vaccination program here in

germany hasn't been going as well as people would have liked floods and trouble bird zuko but it's i'm like these we must 1st of its nation vaccines are the most reliable in the only way out of this pandemic it may not be popular with everyone but the travel bans are in place all travelers arriving from 7 different nations here to germany and they will be in place until the 17th of february at least economists richard went to told us that the travel ban could end up hurting the german economy even more. so it is a copy of the u.k. policies which they banned. people from tanzania and africa and brazil and they claim that. it's because of this new strain which is not really clear is not really well established. and other countries like germany saw that they believe the u.k. statements government statements and they say well then we ban u.k. travelers as well and the same what the u.k. is banning but it doesn't make any sense german businesses are very international
3:05 pm
even local small family owned businesses tend to be international exporters and to get international deals you do need some travel the further restrictions would of course further damage the economy. as it's being proposed should really include a very detailed analysis of all the costs and all the benefits well let's look at that 1st before we further consider such a proposal. next the woman in the u.s. state of virginia has received death threats online and on her phone after revealing that her husband supports donald trump mary jane hamlin posted a photo on facebook of her husband and friends getting ready to go to trump's last rally as president within hours though she was bombarded with messages accusing her of being a domestic terrorist and threatening her with physical violence she's been sharing her story with us. somebody got ahold of that picture off my personal page and i'd

imagine somebody that. knows me inside. him and about 5 o'clock that night my don't shop started getting some ugly phone calls and it just it just kind of spiraled from there some people took that snapshot and started putting the owners of the shop or domestic terrorists and the phone was ringing in ringing and ringing and i can tell you all day thursday and friday our phone never stopped ringing and at 1st we were inserting it. but when you're hearing things like i hope your building burns i hope you die i hope you rot in hell. one gentleman actually said he was coming to kill me one person threatened my grandbabies and i can tell you that it was bad enough that law enforcement had to get in and give us some advice on how to keep everybody safe after having became the target of a hate campaign she appeared on the local t.v. news and that triggered an outpouring of support from across the country but her

story reflects a c.b.s. news poll showing most americans now see their fellow citizens as the country's biggest threat just 8 percent think foreign adversaries present a bigger challenge every day now and says the issue boils down to freedom of expression. you can walk through to the through the doors of my down and shut up in no matter what your policies are we treat everyone with the same kindness and love and respect everybody gets treated the same way because this is america and we have the right to think differently in to express our views without being made to be a free without someone saying if you don't think the way we think we're going to shut your business down if you don't admit that you're wrong in now you think the way we think we're going to torment you that is it is not the country re grew up in i understand there's people that may not want to come here because they choose not to support a business that believes one way or another and that's the greatest think

a better country you can spend your money anywhere that you. better of new york is demanding the truth about covert deaths in nursing homes after an official report revealed but the to sticks don't reveal the full picture we have to make sense of this we have to get the full truth and we have to make sure it never ever happens again nothing like this happens again and we have to be honest about the numbers a report from the new york attorney general concluded that carom deaths between march and november last year were undercounted by as much as 50 percent as kind of open explained. the nursing home scandal hanging over new york state governor andrew cuomo is head just won't go away a new report from the state's attorney general indicates that deaths in the elderly care homes could actually be 50 percent higher than was originally reported that's up to 13000 lives lost in new york it only tallied up the number who actually died
3:09 pm
within elderly care facilities not including those who went to the hospital after getting infected as the pandemic in their investigations continue it is imperative that understand why the residents of nursing homes in new york and the sara lee suffered at such an alarming rate well we cannot bring back the individuals who lost to this crisis this report seeks to offer transparency that the public deserves and to spare increased action to protect our most vulnerable residents the report singled out almost decision to send coded patients to elderly care homes it was an attempt to free up hospital spaces that may have cost 4800 new york the lives cuomo is office dismissed the report as an accurate the word on the count implies to remove total fatalities than has been reported this is functionally rome the department of health has consistently made clear that on numbers reports based on the place of death those words are of little comfort to saw a local news media just lost both of her in-laws last summer and she couldn't hold
3:10 pm
back her feelings a family was affected and i wasn't seeing the coverage i wasn't seeing the questions being asked of this governor he continued to pass the blame on everyone else democrats and republicans have now lined up to condemn cuomo reports for new york state's handing of crude 19 in nursing homes reveals a profound failure of executive leadership governor cuomo and the new york state department of health cheating our elders as expandable as if their lives were nothing more than the cost of doing business this is shocking and unconscionable but not surprising our governor actually wrote a. book about leadership the middle of the curve the 19 pandemic but as we learned today and as many suspected he never told the whole story at the start of the pandemic mainstream us media poured the law on to governor andrew cuomo for is handling of the pandemic in new york state but now it seems pretty clear that he made a bad decision and the media's darling a spacing of scandal. artsy new york.

china's announced that it will no longer recognize british national overseas passports issued to hong kong residents the u.k. earlier said the id's would pave the way for millions in its former colony to move to britain of if the beijing blasted as meddling in its internal affairs. this will only end up hurting britain's own interests no forces under whatever circumstances can erode the determination of the chinese government and the chinese people to uphold national sovereignty and security safeguard hong kong prosperity and stability and oppose external intervention under the new rules coming into force next sunday the possible holders can live study and work in the u.k. for 5 years of the which they can apply for citizenship the new scheme was heavily backed by prime minister boris johnson. i'm immensely proud that we have brought in this new route for hong kong british national overseas passports to live work and

make their home in the country in doing so we have others our profound ties of history and friendship with the people of hong kong and we have stood up for freedom and autonomy values both the u.k. and hong kong hold dear the plans emerged in july in response to chinese legislation giving beijing greater powers over hong kong subsequent riots over the lead to dozens of arrests london accused beijing of breaching its pledge in hong kong's 99700 to maintain key liberties and autonomy for 50 years britain argues that it's got a moral duty to protect its former subjects but international relations analyst victor gal thinks hong kong residents are unlikely to take up the offer of moving to the u.k. . now in terms of the old passports now they are talking about giving a lot of people they are talking about millions of hong kong people the right to move to hong london or britain and eventually become u.k.
3:13 pm
citizens 1st of all i don't think a lot of people in hong kong want to do that why because hong kong is one of the most efficient place to live and to do business and it will continue to do so they compare much better than britain as a country secondly what the british government is doing is to give 2nd class citizenship to the hong kong people because it was they move to hong kong they need to live there for 5 years before they have the right to apply for you cases a ship i don't think people really want to do that so i think the british government is really very much double standards and what they are really talking about is very a whole. you will see from moscow on the way this saturday the nominations are open again for the 2021 at nobel peace prize and a norwegian politician wants the black lives and that's a movement to get the gong will debate that. for the bright.

who dares thinks. we dare to ask. a living on the british prime minister is being accused of hypocrisy over his recent visit to scotland officials there are saying he should be abiding by the lockdown rules that everyone else has to follow reporting next from how he's around . this trip by the prime minister of state assembly to save the union going down very badly in a number of causes not least because many of the that has not been essential your of course in the midst of a very deadly 2nd wave of the crowded 19th pandemic chad and our son's major clits

is so politicized troops north of 'd the border that the welsh 1st minister mark trying to suggest that boris johnson was wrong cite that journey i am only leaving my home or place of work in a genuine image and see and that's because the rules in wales are stay at home work from home we are at level 4 'd of a public health emergency and on the whole i think it is preferable for people who make rules that we expect other people to observe to observe them or selves another person within the government ranks to come in for criticism as the home secretary pretty to sell she's been criticised for holding a meeting great session with police offices in oxfordshire again the questions being raised as to whether that's really essential of this time and a law ordinary people are being harassed and harangued by police when they do nothing more for example we've seen scenes of people travelling to work or going to
3:17 pm
the shops to do their essential shopping and yet being stopped and harassed by police. and about how i did a. thing on and i have a really hated woman my mother and i do it right on i'm. just going to do. one assume just because you didn't believe there you had a right to stop anyone you want and get it he told the kurds were you need to be really informed about. all of that will only seen into the notion and the perception amongst people in the country that one rule for those in government one rule for everyone else. like lives master movements being nominated for the nobel peace prize for its global campaign against racial
3:18 pm
injustice the proposal came from a norwegian lawmaker they've been able to mobilize people from all groups the society not just african-americans not just oppressed people it has been a broad movement in a way which has been different from their predecessors warning the peace prize to black lives mass and will send a powerful message that peace is founded on equality solidarity and human rights and that all countries must respect those basic principles the politician went on to describe black lives matter is mostly peaceful while acknowledging that there had been incidents the movement started in the u.s. back in the summer of 2013 after the acquittal of a man who killed african-american teen trayvon martin since then it's waged a relentless campaign against racially motivated violence of course that ignited big time in 2020 after the police killing of george floyd in minneapolis the idea of giving black live matter a nobel prize has been met if you'd expect with a mixed reaction to have black lab's matter when the nobel peace prize would be so
3:19 pm
incredibly awesome then needs to be a noble mostly peaceful prose so that blow close and stop the seal game counters to that your other black lives matter nominated for a nobel peace prize powerful peaceful like gandhi and king jr tear gassed and shot at by riot police for simply marching peacefully marching against systemic institutionalized racism in the chronic police brutality of black americans the simulation is spiraling out of control. according to a report tracking political violence in the united states the vast majority 93 percent of the black lives massive protests last summer were peaceful 7 percent involved harm to people all vandalism nevertheless the scale of the chaos and damage in the worst hit cities is substantial.
3:20 pm
discussing it with us next is political activist anthony rogers writer and also conservative writer jeff chiles both welcome to r.t. international thanks for you time 1st of all to you anthony the norwegian lawmaker who's nominated black lives matter for this called them mostly peaceful is that enough to qualify for a prize this prestigious. i would say so i mean i think it's important to remember
3:21 pm
1st and foremost that black lives as a matter is a movement of individuals working together in principled struggle but it is not a collective of individuals and what that means is that of course there are individuals who have escalated and taking matters into their own hands that you know some people would criticize including your other guests at the same time i would remind people that gandhi himself also a had periods in his life when he was most bellicose when he was in south africa against black africans and even dr king held weapons in its house to protect himself against white supremacy terrorism so i think that any movement that is 93 percent peaceful and has had just the impact as you were stating earlier around the world not just in the united states also in solidarity with all oppressed people around the world including palestinian people this is a most warranted and deserved award for sure jeff those figures 93 percent peaceful 7 percent violence i would say i guess we look at the news coverage we say was 93
3:22 pm
percent coverage of the violent actions. is that a risk of overstating osorio of overshadowing the global conversation that we've been having in the past year about racial equality that led to this nomination. yeah i think it has i mean i have no problem acknowledging that the vast majority of people who are protesting black lives matter were in fact peaceful but the notion that this is anywhere similar to martin luther king jr having guns in his house defend himself is a little bit absurd on its face the thing is you have a movement where people whether they represent the movement or not torch black businesses 25 people were killed last summer due to these riots that occurred and i might understand out point if the black lives matter their leadership and force came out and condemned the rioting but you only had a few local chapters who were willing to actually condemn the violence so as this went on and on and on you have black neighborhoods being destroyed millions and
3:23 pm
millions of dollars in damage which affects black people and will affect them for years to come just like it happened with the l.a. riots i don't see how this organ how this organization at least the national organization deserves this prize this prize is intended for poor organizations that benefit mankind when you've got people's livelihoods being destroyed and you've got people being killed it's hard for me to for me to see how that's the case especially when there is no widespread condemnation among the ranks of black eyes met antony donald trump's being nominated as names being put forward for a 2nd obviously not to do with they impeach munson the claims of incitement on the capitol hill earlier this month it has to do with israel bringing them closer together with the u.a.e. people who presumably wouldn't begrudge him this nomination. yes i mean i'm which is why it's very interesting to even hear conservatives like your guest try to juxtapose the black lives matter movement with the white supremacy the insurrection that's placed on january 6th which of course was incited by former president have
3:24 pm
to say donald trump and also you know this idea that martin luther king was indigent singing kumbaya a person waiting to get beaten up is just plain feckless dr king himself did say that people in places like detroit and watts and newark you strategic violence because we're talking about property damage not loss of life and never have you seen black lives matter take part in an insurrection where they were trying to stop the democratic process in a country that still oppresses them more than the peace and volatility of white supremacy that we saw on january 6th the fact that donald trump has even been considered for a nobel peace prize just goes to show you the differences in standards for black and white people in this country and quite frankly throughout the world jeff what if you put a pin in the list of anybody who's won the nobel peace prize over the last 50 years just about all of them of had a pretty rocky road to get there but then we look at it all through the prism of history with nominating black lives it's not an individual or
3:25 pm
a couple of individuals that are being nominated it's the global conversation that we're now having unprecedented i would say in my lifetime about racial inequality in all sorts of countries presumably that is what carries the weight of this nomination. you know i liken it to what a lot of people did during the riots out here a lot of our democratic politicians the riots happened the proto peaceful protests happened and what change has actually happened nothing they got they got some painted they got black eyes matter written on certain streets so yeah i'm all for a conversation but just like in the past how this always goes is there's a lot of conversation a lot of talking and no actual action so to meet i mean just having a conversation is in and for me isn't enough to win a nobel peace prize there should actually be something good that happens i mean you have black lives matter talking about defunding the police even though 82 percent of black americans disagree with that and you know what defending the police and having fewer police officers is going to disproportionately affect black people so
3:26 pm
it's me saying that that black lives matter you're not really showing that when you are supporting the destruction of black businesses the destruction of black lives and you're making black people less safe and unlike a lot of people of the other person that you have on this show here i can condemn the rights of the u.s. capitol as a matter of fact the vast majority of republicans did condemn that violence and yet you don't see a whole lot of that we didn't see a whole lot of that this past summer during the riots that were happening with the n.c.f. and black lives matter. and the code message of sending police violence against black americans to express quickly to expect the situation to change now that the someone else in the white house. i mean we have already seen those changes even before this president was sworn in we saw the introduction of the breed that by representatives rashida talib. presley from massachusetts we have seen a slew of executive actions of having to do with racial justice by this president so to say that it's just a hash tag and just saying that there have been hasn't been any action we've seen
3:27 pm
massive police reforms and investment in cities like new york in cities like los angeles minneapolis at one point calling for changing the entire police structure in san francisco police officers are no longer allowed to go on the scene for mental health cases and all across the country we are seeing a call for police to have a more structured analysis in how they deal with transgender people so this idea that there hasn't been action it's simply unfounded what we haven't seen action is is in the domestic terrorist threat in the united states from white supremacy terrorists who show up to state buildings with their guns out but not their mass and we would love to hear more conservatives also going after congress people who are trying to bring guns into the people's house and threatening other members of congress with their white supremacists in q. and on views so again black lives matter is about liberation it is about peace and it is about the real threats of black people which include a capitalist state and white supremacist police officers you have to think that in
3:28 pm
america because this topic does divide the country so much of that are in danger of interpretating this potential nomination for the nobel peace prize as being a political giant against domestic politics rather than as the norwegian politician points out it's more to do with the fight for justice not who individually is proposing it. yeah i think the fight for justice is laudable i think that there is an issue with police brutality i think that something should be done about it i mean anthony had mentioned the build a slew of executive orders that biden has listed you know who are kind of left out i mean he named asian americans by name illegal immigrants by name he didn't say anything about us though did it and when it comes to all these actions that people are calling for where is where are the laws in place to hold police officers accountable when they overstep their boundaries that's what's going to get them to stop not all this nice stuff about oh well what if it's mental health will send somebody else now i mean you whatever you have to actually hold these people accountable and nobody is really trying to do that so it's to me it's just it's
3:29 pm
just window dressing it doesn't actually mean a whole heck of a lot and i want to get to a point to where both conservatives and liberals can actually discuss actual solutions when it comes to white supremacist you're not going to have a lot of people on the right who agree with that like i said the people out at the capitol were roundly condemned by the right unlike what we saw with the rights from black lives matter last year so i think we need to get to a place where we can actually have an honest conversation about this rather than just pushing for a certain agenda or trying to just call out the other side or or what have you. just i am in a if i agree with that i think you just saw a beautiful moment i would love to have these conversations with our conservative friends to actually hold police officers accountable. read things like qualified immunity and i think your guest is absolutely right i mean we have to have these difficult conversations we have to be willing to listen to each other not talk past each other and i think that black lives matter in many ways have started it and
3:30 pm
maintain that conversation ok i'm glad you're both of the same page just the rest of the country to go that gentleman i suppose said right well that she'll tell us what 2021 anthony wrote is right jeff thanks very much for joining us. on that for the news for this hour i'm calling brian moscow next altie international update in 30 minutes. max ties are of this is the kaiser reports everything's going to plan let's check in with stacey max full disclosure at the 1st headline is actually from you that's a tweet from you what's happening with g. and e today shows maintaining fair and orderly markets becoming a nightmare market making technology across all markets globally is breaking down
