a lecturer at work medical school thank you for joining us on the program it's nice to see you how have lockdowns affected people's drinking habits do you think well i think there's a lot to be said about this latest report from the b.m.j. perhaps the most crucial thing is that these deaths are avoidable they're not nearly figures that these unfortunate people that have lost their lives due to fights without hall and yes we have seen the highest level since we started recording these in 2001 but we actually need to look into what the data shows us before we can draw good conclusions on it so it's tempting to make a direct conclusion that because we have seen an increase in alcohol consumption with the pandemic that's causing a direct reaction here there will be reaction there will be a response in that data but probably not visible here yet we sort 10 percent rise in acute intoxication deaths that was $352.00 people however the biggest

rise was a 16 percent death rate 16 percent rise to over $4000.00 people from liver disease and this is something that is going to take at least 10 years and some of that is abusing alcohol to develop so it's very very important that we acknowledge that yes there is a in a dysfunctional relationship with alcohol and this really should be the warning shot that there are problems coming down the line to us the attribute this purely to the pandemic is probably not approaching the data reasonably and also groups in society more affected than others are is that an increase drinking across the board. well it occurs all groups we've seen an increase and it's thought that we're looking at individuals who need help about 4 and 5 people are accessing any

forms of support that whether that's talking to their g.p. whether or not that talking to family members who can say actually we will support you in getting through this we have a large number of alcohol related support groups in the u.k. great change their lives turning point you know we are with you we can help but we need people to step forward and say please help us whether or not getting support from family to go forward to that the lockdown will have had a big impact on that i wonder if it will happen once restrictions were lifted. hopefully it'll mean that people are able to access mental health support so that anxiety about isolation that concern over the lot there will alleviate and hopefully we'll see a reduction in general alcohol consumption i mean let's be very very clear we have seen a rise to cross the border alcohol use about one quarter of all people who drank

alcohol have increased their consumption and some of those numbers have been staggering if we look at the people who drink over 50 units a week that's more now 5 bottles of wine and week that's gone up from 1500000 people before lock down to now over 2500000 people so the effect of the pandemic probably isn't visible in these numbers yet and it's expected that we'll be further consequences coming down the line so we need to act now to give people the support that they need to overcome these alcohol as a coping mechanism and what advice would you give to people struggling to cope during the pandemic. speak to your doctor you know the n.h.s. is free at point of care we are there for you whether or not us and telephone consultation a video consultation we will help you you are not alone please don't suffer in
