tv   Boom Bust  RT  February 9, 2021 1:30pm-2:01pm EST

1:30 pm
this is room bust the one business show you can't afford to manage i'm sam i'm just going to washington coming up that point to a record high after investing $1500000000.00 we're going to play what this for the future of the children and the other players companies are going to follow suit. after the nicobar after data showed the shot had little protection from would have been a variant in the country argued from in. the report and we finally hear from president joe biden on us trying to relations with the break down his comments with the panel about later in the a lot to get to that are. a big day for bitcoin as tesla announced it purchased $1500000000.00 worth of bitcoin in a filing with the securities and exchange commission tesla's said the move was for more flexibility to further diversify and maximize returns on our cash the company
1:31 pm
also plans to start accepting payments in bitcoin and in the near future subject to a political laws an initially on a limited basis which we may or may not liquidate upon receipt of the move caused going to surge to new highs 2.5 percent in premarket trading alone it reached $44200.00 meanwhile u.s. stocks are also hitting record fresh highs the dow added nearly 200 while the s. and p. and tech heavy nasdaq they all reached intraday high for more on this we're going to welcome back. partner and director of trading research and education for market gauge dot com michelle good to see you as always let's start with tesla here the 1500000000 dollars a big question it just purchased now you know on musk he's been extremely vocal on twitter about because especially as of late could he have used this to kind of prop up the price of big quinn for his own benefit we know musk also has been tweeting
1:32 pm
frequently about dodge coin doors coin. which is about a fraction of the price of big but each time he tweets about it that price jumps 20 to 30 percent. well hi sarah well that there's a couple of things that we have to think about before we go into whether or not he's manipulating the price of bitcoin the market cap of because it is a trillion so one and i have a 1000000000 is less than one percent of the market cap a big point so yes he could be a market mover mostly because he gets in and of course everybody jumps in as well but big coins been on its own should be for a while and once it took out 40000 over the weekend it dipped a little bit and then of course we saw it go back there today so in terms of his ability to manipulate we know that he has a history of talking down his own stock price and then the price goes right back i don't know if i would necessarily say that this was some grand. design by him to get the big korean price up after he bought it whatever it is though interesting
1:33 pm
and when you have a profile like his that he can at least have some kind of influence on a knee jerk reaction to what happens to the price of anything he decides to talk about like you just said was already calling and he's pretty popular going with that but also said it's going to start accepting big quintus payment in exchange for some of its products it would be the 1st autumn i don't maker to actually do so is this a sign of a weakening dollar i mean we know big question has been extremely volatile so as as much as it can go up it can also go down. well that's true and of course in terms of the dollar we've seen the dollar been weak now for quite some time with recent pop having more. but in terms getting back to your question what i really relates to more is the fact that now foreign countries do not have to convert their currency in order to buy a tesla so for example china where it's very popular to buy tesla's right now does
1:34 pm
not have to worry about converting it into your on they can do it through big coin so i think he's taking a chance here in terms of like you say the value of the coin staying firm but on the other hand it seems that even before all of this happened there have been so many bullish projections for big number one and number 2 is a lot of companies already done that for example paper how which gives you money back and we know that because going to get more and more standardization when i say that i don't necessarily mean regulated i mean that there will be more ways to trade it if you are not interested in just inserting a credit card to buy flat out so i think this is already a trend started he's continuing it most seem more to follow it isn't that something that quinn was trying to stay away from though. they're signed trying to stay away from regulation absolutely but they cannot control like for example the wink bingo boss twins who want to start a gemini not only credit card but also a way to trade their kind and we know that right now i think canada actually
1:35 pm
started out with it the cmu excuse me started the syrian teachers so i when i talk about being able to trade it i mean more away from actually buying the actual bitcoin but like for example we already can do it through riot for example which is a block chain company micro strategy another block chain company pay pal which is using it so those already ways around it i don't know if they're going to be able to control let's say an e.t.f. that might come out there's already one g b g c but it's an over the counter well michelle but i do want to turn to markets here 3 major indices in the united states all hitting new record highs the senate and house they voted to move forward through reconciliation and essentially this allows right the democrats to expedite this relief package without the republican vote is this why markets are so optimistic because of the stimulus. i think that's one reason is because of the stimulus i think there's also been a couple of other economic statistics that came out more in the manufacturing industrial side that has also shown that there is some growth and we can see even
1:36 pm
in terms of just the manufacturing in the united states in the earnings we've had 80 percent i think of the s. and p. stocks already report and a lot of them well beat expectations and then there's the vaccine so there's so many reasons why people are optimistic now that the economy is going to recover and the stimulus of course is the icing on the cake because it also brings in what we also have seen since april which is more retail investments into the market so it's all kind of one giant snowball right now working together rolling in the same direction i want to get to treasury secretary janet yellen her comments on sunday comments talking about the how she expects the united states to reach full employment by 2022 with the help of the stimulus plan but obviously we're seeing the virus the issues with vaccine distribution do you see this being the case are we going to reach for recovery by 2022. well i might be not only overly optimistic
1:37 pm
i think the whole idea of how jobs look is changed forever as a result of the pandemic there will be businesses that are just lost and won't come back the way people are employed will change more working at home and so i think we have to look at the fact that full unemployment may not look exactly the way it looked say 2 years ago before all of this happened so i do believe that we will see more jobs created and of course if they pass some kind of a infrastructure package that would help if they pass calabash that would help but in terms of the actual way jobs look they will be different and maybe like i said she's a little bit optimistic in terms of full recovery right we're already seeing a lot of difference especially with president biden although he said that the 15 dominant wage is not going to be included in this relief package he promises to address it later which will be really interesting because bernie sanders is obviously arguing for it to pass now however we'll see what happens and if it does pass that would cut 1400000 jobs not something that we necessarily need michele
1:38 pm
snyder of the market gauge group thank you so much for your time today. thank you sarah. south africa is halting its rollout of the astra zeneca vaccine evidence on mars that the vaccine did not work well against a crown a virus variant 1st discovered in the country well meanwhile in the united states mass vaccination sites they continue to open up by turning sports stadiums into medical offices today chavez has more drug maker astra zeneca is racing to adapt its kogan 1000 vaccine as new variants of the virus are emerging the process now even more urgent after a small case study revealed that it was less effective at protecting against the more contagious strain discovered in south africa today south africa hit with a devastating blow in its fight against the corona virus emergency. rooms in south africa shown clinical if you could see. substantial officials halting plans after
1:39 pm
pullin ery data from a small case study involving 2000 people with the median age of 31 suggested that the astra zeneca vaccine only offers minimal protection against mild to moderate disease caused by the variant in south africa but that a same time i think it's also very much a good idea to check been somewhat you 40. 1000 vaccines 3 and. 4 to 95 percent and all of the effects you know if you can see what's not against the v.a. and it's coming to south africa and that. there won't be a suspension of the vaccine rolled out now throwing south africa's plans into disarray just a week after the country perceived its 1st 1000000 doses of the vaccine on what's really is the fact that. we're looking. so if we can get good. so then. you.

americans look. at every single day this is a history of the u.s. . america. automakers hind i shares tumbled on monday after automakers said they are not in talks with apple to develop a self driving car this comes after speculation they were working with apple on autonomy vehicles hyundai said it is getting more requests from other companies to develop autonomy vehicles how ever apple was not one of them q motors also said it was not in talks with apple but is reviewing prospects with multiple companies overseas last month i said it was actually an early stages or early discussions with apple but nothing had actually been decided later they revise the statement and did not mention apple at all when hyundai shares tumbled 6.21 percent while
1:48 pm
kiya plunge 15 percent. and finally we hear from president joe biden on u.s. china relations will perhaps one of the most important relationships the one between the world's 2 largest economies on sunday biden told c.b.s. news that the u.s. relationship with china over the next few years will not be one of conflict but will be one of extreme competitions work focused more on international rules of the road so what exactly does that mean and what is not going to local ike joining me now to the show host ben swan and jeffrey tucker editorial director at the american economic institute for economic research ben let's start with you breakdown for us president biden's comments what is he saying about this extreme competition. yeah you know he talks about extreme competition being the driver between china and the united states the problem with that statement you know he said that the u.s. is going to be very tough because he mentioned specifically president geo over in
1:49 pm
china referring to president g. has been very tough and very bright but he also said this he says he does not have a democratic small d. bone in his body right and we all know that's absolutely true but the reality is what biden is talking about is competing with china and being competitive with china this is totally in agreement there but the problem is that biden did not talk about the issue of whether or not we can compete on a level playing field that has been the argument that's been made certainly was made over the last 4 years by the trump administration the former administration that was and how are they essentially were saying china does not have a level playing field with the rest of the world therefore we have to level the playing field in order to compete by didn't really talk about that the president this time did not say much about whether or not there would be a level playing field for both sides and that's one of the biggest arguments that's been made about china is that they still intellectual property that they they essentially don't honor the rules that are being played here so we're playing by one set of rules in the u.s.
1:50 pm
they're playing by a different set of rules in china at least that's the allegation that's been made so still no details as to how that really is going to go you said it's not saying competition right competition can mean a lot of things but one thing it does mean is that government pretty much stays out . pretty vague there but geoffrey to that point while many u.s. corporations they've complained about this ip theft by the chinese many corporations are fighting to get into china how does that corporate influence the biden administration's policies i think is really really decisive in fact i'm almost certain looking back at that that the disastrous course that trumped administration took and it's us china relations might have actually been part of his undoing with us corporate america u.s. and china are ever more linked in terms of globalism technology and growing together yes it is always contention those issues are as arguments about intellectual property particularly as regards pharmaceuticals and technology but
1:51 pm
what the trump administration aspired to do was what they called decouple i mean this was a level of for ross a tea and a trade war that nobody welcomed or even anticipated i don't think the trumpet ministration to us better that they. china was one of their 1st targets and that was the trump said oh trade wars are an easy win it's not going to be a problem or they don't expect retaliation that expected to go on as long as it didn't get as horrific a horrible as it as it became so but there's a lot of bad news coming out of the by administration but i have to say that this is one piece of good news it's it's reasons for optimism all we really need is a restoration of some kind of trade diplomacy and a little bit of peace the the trade war was devastating and intensified the communist party control over the over the country and i think even inspired china to be a little more aggressive towards its neighbors in a way the u.s.
1:52 pm
couldn't do anything about so i think this is there's a point of optimism here at least we're going to go back to the negotiating table maybe get some of these terrorists back down to get some more cooperation between the 2 countries for the benefit of producers and consumers. all sides and a lot of people did agree with president trump and still agree with him that you know they need to be a little bit harsher with china or they need to add certain tariffs to certain products whatever it is they need to do but it did get to a level where i like you want to like you said jeffrey nobody thought it would get to this was a long time coming so many negotiations we have a deal we don't have a deal we're close to a deal no we don't just hearing completely different sides of the stories but ben and his 1st call with the united states secretary of state anthony blinken china's top diplomat he took a hard stance with the u.s. what was out over. yeah a lot of that was over taiwan and the fact that under the trump administration so you know we talk about deviating from the norms one thing that from administration
1:53 pm
it was they deviated from past administrations by unilaterally dealing with taiwan and essentially selling military weapons especially military bombers to taiwan which is something that has not happened in the past other administrations have not done that china sees that as a direct provocation because as you know china believes that taiwan is part of its territory it belongs to it they do not see it i want to separate nation and so while china does not regard to i want to separate nation in the past the u.s. has had what they call the one china policy with the essentially doesn't differentiate between the 2 because the trump administration did that the kind of the 1st response from this chinese foreign minister to our new secretary of state was you guys need to get back to the old policy when it comes to taiwan we have a serious problem with this and so china is already flexing in terms of that what remains to be seen is how much the u.s. will respond to that i suspect we're going to go back to a very similar policy with china as we had under the obama administration and under
1:54 pm
the obama administration that one china policy was was full in effect so i think we'll probably be going back to that jeffrey i want to go back to the u.s. china trade or before we go there's a new report that says a large part of the phase one trade deal i want to took years to sign and 8 between the united states and china was a quote failure is that primarily because of coded or was it did it never actually it was never actually going to produce what was promised. well i was looking at the trade deficit figures here that is no question that the lockdowns had a big impact on trade in the least but it was already had in a bad direction and the invasion of the truck ministration was to narrow the trade deficit the results were exactly of course the opposite the u.s. lost a lot of markets and. relations broke down but you know what was important about this is that china did not stop its international diplomacy with regard to trade it kept striking up new agreements with its neighbors and regional agreements it was
1:55 pm
ready to fight this decoupling thing i don't entirely understand how it is that the u.s. could have so underestimate the economic power of china it's almost like i don't know whether there's something went very very wrong over the last 3 years and i think that by administration showing a little bit more sophistication on this topic i think we're going to iron out some of these intellectual property disputes u.s. corporate very influential corporate sector in the u.s. is very is very desperate to get back to negotiating and get back to trading and get back to progress that has to happen sooner rather than later and everybody knows that jeffrey before we go are we going to see a face to deal are some sort of deal in the coming year i guess you a year or 2 with the biden restoration but i predicted on the show i think around an hour gratian time that there would be 2 big 1st parodies of the administration
1:56 pm
one is to walk out walk back some of the lockdowns domestic lockdowns and to restore u.s. trade relations with the china so i think this is a huge party and in large part is one of the reasons a biden was elected and supported by american corporate class and so this is going to be a very important priority for him by administration i think phase 2 is is going to look very very differently and i think we're all going to benefit from this as much as i have a problem with the chinese communist party we need trade again that's a path towards prosperity and peace than i us hope. jeffrey yeah i think it's i think it's very likely but i don't think it will be a quote unquote phase 2 deal because i don't think the by the ministration was anything to do with the things one the oh i think i'll just refer to it as a whole new set of negotiations between china and the us although that's all we can hope for right some some will toward a common ground china today the minister of foreign affairs did say they want to cooperate to all we can do is hope for the best and was co-host bence on jeffrey tucker of the american institute for economic. set for this time you can catch us
