a lot we know about contradicting information from various sources on the right way to contain this pandemic and as many leaders are urging schools to open and a multiple options for the vaccine are becoming available most people still are hesitant on the next steps mainly because the risk involves the most valued life itself this is new variants from south africa have been confirmed in new england as well as other strains are emerging around the united states so should you be concerned and is this a reason for the united states to slow down their reopening phase joining us is dr marilyn singleton past president of the american association of physicians and surgeons thank you so much for joining us dr singleton. thank you for having me and i have to start obviously there's a lot of questions and things that come out this week that could be changed in 3 weeks as we continue to learn more that is kind of been the story for the past year but now we're hearing about this new strain and how concerned you think we should be and to think this deviation was expected. well certainly new

strains happen all the time that's what cyrus's do they mutate they just mutate on their own with because they want to live and as our body mounts a response to them they find a way to live that's their job evolution is well and that's what they do want to fight and we're talking about now we're seeing this continued vaccine roll out president biden even just recently announced he's going to add more and to the roles and of relief more to the states to think there's any evidence regarding whether or not these vaccines can protect you against these new strains if you happen to encounter them. well each strain is different apparently with the u.k. strain according to moderen and 5 that's the messenger r.n.a. vaccine according to various data that they are effective against the u.k. string however south african strain which is more infectious because

it changes a more ways than the u.k. strain. that they've measured the antibodies of people who have the vaccine and the antibodies to do to the south african variant are much lower then through the u.k. fairy so sun protection and they say it will protect against severe disease but it does not protect you from getting code at night or an infection with sars virus that the vaccine is made against well it's interesting i do want to focus on the vaccine as one of the things they're coming out right now they're saying obviously the study to keep up precautions but that this vaccine might only last 3 months do you think they're saying that this is a protective measure because we've not had it around for more than a year for that is just a simple bit of what we can thought of guarantee it for and as we continue to learn more do you feel like that time period will be extended if as we learn more about

how long the fact thing can have. i think so and certainly the c.d.c. has now allowed people who have the vaccine if they wait 2 weeks and it's with in 3 months they can go out and see people who are might or be infected with copd that. most people assume that just like with flu vaccines that every year they are it has to be a booster knowing that ceasefire says are going to mutate just as the flu mutates granted it's a different fires but viruses tend to follow the same sort of pathology and right now i think you're right we can only say 3 months because that's about the time the. number of people have had the effect seen beyond the people in the clinical trials so how can anybody saying anything definitively beyond that well

and that's are also talked about with this vaccine because now we're also finding some other risk factors that come into we found out last week a doctor released that involving women and mammograms are saying they would not suggest you getting the vaccine and you have to wait now 4 weeks before you get a mammogram for fear that there could be a false positive or false negative that come from it we're also hearing things such as female cosmetic fillers that might go in that there could be reactions to that do you think these attorneys that we're finding out are enough to say pete for people to not get the vaccine is that a good enough excuse for people to say you know what i'm going to hold off getting it if it's obviously having reactions or could cause a reaction with something else i'm doing. i think this incident being something that's up to the person there's risks benefits to everything we do in medicine and if you're in a low risk group then you might decide not to take the vaccine in take your chances with getting copd it which you may not get you may have already got which is sort of another kind of dicey thing that's happening with the vaccine that people aren't

being tested to see if they've already had coven prior to getting the vaccine and there might be some complications that arise from now sort of your body getting a double dose of the engine and you might already have antibodies to cope with it so there's some unanswered questions out there and there are other vaccines in the pipeline if someone wants to wait for a more standard vaccine where it doesn't inject something that makes you produce a an agenda get the antibodies that is good old fashioned vaccine where it just in checks you with in an engine and you make your own an avanti and that's that and there's one in the pipeline like that johnson and johnson vaccine is made a little differently so the real question is if someone is told to have a vaccine will they get their choice will they be able to say well no i don't want

power but does this show that the biden ministrations a disregard for china in dealing with taiwan and what could be the result for this and more we bring in former u.s. trade official under bush including steve gill say steve thanks for joining us i mean that's all that we've heard is that president biden is you know was obviously a good friend of the chinese but in this case the chinese are not happy with president biden because he's cutting up to taiwan they don't like that friendship so let me ask you this you know he's given a pledge to not accept chinese claims to sovereignty over taiwan president biden did this do you think that the u.s. should be engaging in the dispute especially when it seems china is actually willing to use its military force to get what it wants. well china has been using military bullying in that region for the last 10 years this is not anything new what's different is that there bellicose talk has been accompanied by them completely changes the dynamic in hong kong reaching into hong kong making it

subservient to them in a way that was never intended by the agreements that have been in place for a long time and i think that's what makes this a more dangerous move as they've already shown their willingness to take action in hong kong which we have not really responded to and now they're being very aggressive when it comes to taiwan as well again they're going to test president biden they're going to be tested president biden in the middle east and all over the world and i think it's going to be important to see how response and frankly so far by the ministration looks to be responding pretty well when he's going along with a bunch of the island of taiwan obviously there's an economic standpoint if it hits why present but i think it's trying to make this deal just like president trump try to go along with the chinese make a deal with them but do you think it means so much the chinese that they are willing to take over the island of taiwan even if it means using force if it what if it for the chinese right now is it just purely economics or is it ego. i think at this point they're willing to throw some muscle and you've got president xi who is you know certainly in mind with its generals who are much more aggressive than

perhaps previous chinese administrations so right now it's you know it's a sharp elbows it's showing some muscle i don't think they more than anywhere else in the region wants to actually go to the armed conflict and invasion of taiwan by the chinese would be extraordinarily costly both in terms of human life and the risk of nuclear weapons being deployed as well so i don't think the chinese really want to help that way particularly when you've got other nations in that region japan korea also want to tamp things down and make sure that the flow of economic goods from china japan korea and others continues and aggressive action in taiwan ins the economic growth in that region and that is not what china wants but yet you have some of those same countries like the japanese actually wanting the u.s. to get involved to look at taiwan as a red line you know why can't they take care of their own region why do they feel like the united states needs to get involved in this why can't they within themselves or is this the u.s. saying we need to be involved in everything that goes on. well certainly we need to

be involved because the economic impact again between japan between korea between our trade relations with the with china and taiwan and malaysia in the whole region the economics report enough for us to be involved in that region is good for the u.s. it is good for the whole world when there is not aggressive military actually going on when countries are not invading others or using military might do to exercise their will so it is in our interest to be there and to make sure that we maintain a calm atmosphere and keep in mind we've got tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of troops in korea and japan and throughout that entire region the philippines it's in our interest both in terms of stabilizing the region as well as making sure that it continues as a trade region that benefits our economy and the rest of the world well and you have to look at the timing the steve you know it's only been a few weeks since president biden's been in but administration is obviously in power now some might look while there was a lot of debate a lot of conversations a lot of back and forth between china and the u.s.

over tariffs or the last administration the truth that the chinese leaders i don't think really tested trump during his term people say probably because they couldn't predict what trump with going to do to feel like this is a test by president xi to see how much that actually can they can actually get away with and pushing the united states. yeah i think again if you're going to test administration do it early before they get their feet firmly planted on to themselves before they really have their their team in place and i think a lot of the members of the of the by the administration are still trying to figure out where the bathrooms are and where the coffee machines are this is when you do those kinds of tests but i don't think it's it's it's the same kind of administration that you had with president trot president trump made it clear that he would be very tough with china if they were in the negotiations they were in the way that they stood up to north korea so i think they're trying to see if that same strength in character is going to be shown with biden particularly with some of them having the expectation that maybe he's in the pocket of the chinese that maybe he's beholden to them i think at least at this point you know one week into this

put biden's $1.00 trillion dollar krone virus relief package on a fast track to becoming law it's a process called budget reconciliation this would enable the senate to approve the resolution without any republican support this comes after 2 massive relief stimulus packages were sent out under the trump administration as a way to help those facing financial hardships during the pen demick one in march the other in december the current bill under review has 3 major factors the 1st encompasses $400000000000.00 for the crowd of r.'s vaccines and testing 2nd to over one trillion dollars would provide a direct check to families in need 3rd the bill would give $414000000000.00 as emergency funds for struggling small businesses according to what biden calls his american rescue plan it was break down to an additional $1400.00 in stimulus checks for those who qualify 600 dollars has already been approved so that would total each check to $2000.00 families could receive up to $5600.00 and unlike the

previous 2 rounds adult dependents would be able to receive payments as well while there has been some debate on who should be eligible for the checks the house is calling for those making 75000 a year and married couples making less than 150000 a year to qualify for the full assistance the bill would also expand unemployment benefits by $100.00 that would increase the weekly total to $400.00 it would also up the child tax credit to $3000.00 per child according to the congressional budget office legislation would give states about 19000000000 of parental assistance worker a list of who may qualify and some republicans are pointing to the existing debt and argue opening up the country would be the best stimulus for both the american people and businesses to democrats in the senate have already voiced opposition against part of the plan that would raise the minimum wage to $15.00 an hour the bill will be finalized this week and could reach a vote as early as next week if passed checks could be received by mid march.

a very comprehensive very complicated bill and it's one that they're going to need a lot of support from members of both political parties so it really look president biden has only been in office a rather relatively short period of time and with legislation is complicated it's just it's going to take some time but as as your speaker just stated they hope to get disapproved by next week so that's quite frankly pretty rapid response to a very serious need out there in society but jan you're right it's a 1 point one trillion dollar deal malique however it's a pie there's a lot of alternate at this point i think most americans of people are saying just give me the dollars forget everything else why aren't republicans saying pass a clean bill why aren't they united saying let's just get the money and the american people stand and deal with the rest of the bill following. you know that we're in washington d.c. you're really asking that question about congress the problem is that we've seen this happen many times before where there is agreement on many parts of the bill

but because of politics that actually gets in the way we saw what happened with the last to be aware there was this 2 trillion dollar number and i think that ended up going down to maybe about 900 or so congress never passes clean bills and this passed bill we saw that was about $85000000.00 for cambodia know millions of dollars for the kennedy center and many other things that have nothing to do with where we are today biden said that he's the person that as soon as he gets in office he can talk to people across the aisle but according to his own press secretary he hasn't talked to i think that was leader mccarthy since before the inauguration so why don't things get done we pay people we pay these people and they don't do their job because we don't demand it and i think that's why they're in jan i don't see this thing a republican or democrat issue i think we can all agree people need the money right now but one thing we do have to think of long term is jan where does and this would

happen if trump was under office people were asking where does the $1.00 trillion dollars come from. well obviously comes from the printing presses as gannett yellen said it's a problem if we don't do something and it's a problem if we do something but the fact of matter is this is a necessity and will have to learn to pay for it later i mean listen republicans sure don't seem to complain when they lower taxes which creates budget deficits but all of a sudden when you start looking at budget deficits and on the horizon there's probably going to be a tax increase somewhere the republicans scream but the fact is this is such a monumental problem that nations is facing right now this is a relief bill that's long overdue and vastly needed and it's not gonna be a perfect fix but it's going to be something that hopefully will offer the relief to the american families and at the same time perhaps stimulate the economy and once this crisis in just health crisis hopefully the united states will be in a lot better position that if we do it will be a much better position if we don't do anything and that's

a thing like most the time republicans come back and say it's actually take away regulations that's the best way to stimulate the economy instead of actually the government paying just putting money into the circulation why are republicans united in any way there's very little coming out of the republicans in congress right now on how to fight back on this $1.00 trillion dollars bill are they afraid they're going to be seen as cold hearted because they don't want the cash in the people's hands oh you know i think republicans are really very. able republicans have pretty much a step to that when it comes to passing a bill in congress whether we have control of congress or not we're still going to get blamed for it there are a lot of things that both congress members on both sides can do but because we exist in tribes i don't expect either republicans or democrats to really come to an agreement hopefully there's money that the american people can get soon we've wasted a lot of time on impeachment you would think that that's the thing that congress with focused on on day one but instead we saw that trump got another acquittal for

us and p. smith but if we can get politics out of the way which is of course. pretty ironic talking about here in washington d.c. we can actually make progress and but unless we you know move forward. together as opposed to existing in tribes we're not going to get anywhere and that's where we are today and that is definitely a good place good way to describe how we are in these different tribes jan 15 dollar raising as a minimum wage democrats have campaigned on this for a long time they think that this is something that are kind of nice however are they going to be willing to hold it up if that does not pass are they going to hold the whole bill up based on that one nugget right there to get that victory. well the democrats certainly need 50 votes plus the vote of the vice president to probably get this bill passed so as you mentioned earlier there may be 2 votes democratic votes that they don't have so it may be something that they'll compromise on and maybe something that may have to come up later in separate legislation but more importantly they need

a vast comprehensive bill which is going to treat lots of the 00s that are facing this nation right now and if the minimum wage has to be compromised or so or save for a later date and that's probably where it's going to be especially if there are democrats that are going to vote for this because they need 51 votes and that 51st vote has to come from the vice president they certainly can't afford to lose 2 votes well and that's the thing with this bill you know in the last bill we heard a lot about small business small business owners the ones that are saying this raising of the minimum wage is going to hurt them the most because it's obviously who they employ are a lot of people that are just you know at the basic working on this case right here we're not hearing much about small businesses mainly i think because there was so much corruption and drama that came the last time in this bill is this republicans say ok we're going to let you pass it then we're going to do the same thing to you and show just how this to dr small business where's the focus. i think republicans are allowing democrats to take the lead on this because again we've been to blame so many times for things there are going to follow the democrats lead i actually

hope that both sides actually come together because we saw over the summer the police reform bill because of one issue qualified immunity that killed the entire bill let's hope that this minimum wage does not kill the entire bill but because we're in washington i would not be surprised if that's the case and if money does not get into the hands of the people quick and a chance you think democrats could have to answer for this that this is their real chance the 1st time to show that they can do something for the american people when they hold both houses of congress and the white house do you think if they don't pass it this could be very hard for you to overcome later on of course it will be and that's why this is going to pass and it may be. with the minimum wage maybe without it but it's going to pass in some comprehensive form involving probably $1.00 trillion dollars as we discussed it will pass the democrats won't put themselves in the position they have to play the blame game on this one well the sooner the better i think is what we feel like even if it's the government handing out checks people need money today and thank you so much for joining us thank god.
