intelligence resummon the deal. must protect its own existence as excess. according to a new gallup poll over 60 percent of those are just satisfied with the 2 major parties the country is divided politically but the parties themselves are divided which did into this most voters on their part is it finally time to evolve from this stupid. greetings and salyut a shim from pandemics to police violence to murder hornets to the death rattle of
2:31 pm
rational political thought 2020 will without a doubt go down in history as one of the most difficult and bizarre years in the modern era but just outside the edge of last year's headlines and click bait was another story that silently and steadily rose during the 365 of 2020 and that my friends of murder yes while our eyes were on the pandemic here in the united states of america murder quickly became the epidemic according to the national commission on covert 19 and criminal justice homicides bloomed in 2020 and along with the sharp rise of the rates of aggravated assaults and gun aggravated assaults and gun assaults rose dramatically as well in fact the commission reports that homicide rates were 30 percent higher than in 2019 and a historic increase representing 1268 more deaths in the san. well of 34 cities
2:32 pm
than the year before 30 percent higher wow but what's truly fascinating with this sudden rise in violence was that it was across the board from sea to shining sea according to f.b.i. data journalist rob arthur and jeff asher report in the intercept that quote the change in murders was larger in towns with under 10000 people that was up 31 percent then in cities with over a 1000000 and the murders rose dramatically in big cities like new york and chicago but smaller cities like lubbock texas and shreveport louisiana also recorded their highest murder counts in decades now of course the question is what what would cause this terrible rise in violence while some point to the strain of living under the pandemic or the rise of police violence and the national questioning of law enforcement legitimacy as factors others point to the massive surge in gun buying at the beginning of the year when the threat of lockdowns and pandemic was
2:33 pm
prevalent but thomas abbott director of the national commission on code 19 and criminal justice bill he observes it lightly it likely takes more than one factor to create a spike of this size that means it wasn't just the pandemic or police violence or more guns it was all of these things happening simultaneously and perhaps more so what does the violence of 2020 mean as we now start the year of 2021 well the only way to find out is when we start watching the homes. in a city. like. this you always see. great. slaves systemic deception. which. you'll. know watching the hawks i am tired or old or i'm an. incredible rise in homicides
2:34 pm
and violent assaults and things of that nature across the board from small towns to large towns what do you think is the role the where why how do you think that these things have risen so dramatically what do you what's your take on this well i think we've watched a precipitous fall in people's financial safety and security particularly around jobs more and more people have been laid off some people don't know if their jobs are coming back and industries collapse but in addition to that you know we have these high stress areas and high stress concerns and you're right whether you're in large cities suburban areas rule areas it seems to have touched a lot of people and irrespective to you know what certain parties would like us to believe that it's only the big cities and only the urban areas i think the data shows that a lot of people are affected right now and honestly the only thing that can really point to in terms of a direct impact is what we've seen with job crisis that's true true you know when people are unemployed when people are pushed against the wall financially and
2:35 pm
they're stressed out you know tragically that is a perfect potion for violence it's interesting when you see in the some of the numbers i just want to point this out it has been a half a century since the country saw a year to your murder rate jumped nearly 13 percent in fact at the end of 2020 chicago police reported more than $750.00 murders a jump more than 50 percent compared to 2019 when you jump over to los angeles just some of the bigger cities 30 percent increase in los angeles new york city saw 43437 homicides nearly a 40 percent increase than in the previous year but having said all that. it's still a downward trend because in 2020 the homicide rate was $11.00 deaths per 100000 residents in these like 3435 sample cities 25 years earlier in 1999 when i was in the middle high school that all the rate was 19.4 percent per $100000.00 residents so we're still seeing a drop in violent crime universally but 2020 was this like weird year where it just
2:36 pm
shot up now i want to ask you this because a lot of people are kind of pointing towards well you know you see a lot on the conservative side of the argument because you know they'll kind of point and say well it's you know the lack of policing and you know the whole you know the protests we saw over the summer and i'm going to pull back from being able to prove police correctly but it's not really that is it it's not that at all and what we know what the data points to is that it wasn't necessarily a summarize that all of these these instances were happening before the summer protest ever started also this summer protests largely war in a lot of the major cities the fact that some a lot of these murder increases we've seen have been outside of major cities as well point to something else and i do think that it's important to overall note as you did that murders have grossly or you know these incidents of violence at that level have grossly declined over the past 15 years so yes there's been up to date
2:37 pm
and you know a now versus what we had a year ago but overall we've seen decreases across the country we've seen that new york and a lot of other places too in fact many you know when those people kind of make that challenge that well we change the way police procedures due to the b.l.m. marchers and things like that and george floyd you know that's why we're suddenly seeing this rise in violence that's actually not true because. you know while arrests fell 39 percent in the summer relative to the 1st 3 months of 2020 arrests in new york have been falling for the pad this in new york they've been falling for over a decade and these big drops and arrests previous to this last year have not resulted that they can. pattern that they suddenly result in more violent crime i mean i think a lot of people really they really look at it and say this is an issue of you have pandemics you have economic depression and then you combine that with tension because you saw 3 big spikes you saw one in the early spring then you saw one over the summer and then you saw one in the fall and i think that all contributes to that now moving forward how we deal with that i don't know i mean i will say this
2:38 pm
there was a hill harris poll the hill and harris poll found that 50 percent of registered voters so the u.s. government spends too little on antipoverty property measures 56 percent of those responses so there's been too little on health care another $56.00 but there's been too little. education i don't know about you measure but those 3 things that we spend so little much money those to me would bring down the murder rate no you're absolutely correct and ironically these are things that people often throw tomatoes towards when they talk about socialism but it looks like the majority of americans actually want to see policies that are more progressive that actually do alleviate some of these some of these poverty situations that lead to some of the violence that we've been seen to true true true. the volunteer state tennessee has been in the news a lot lately and it hasn't been positive this week republicans the party of free speech and individual rights it's what's more working against their own spouse
2:39 pm
beliefs tennessee republican lawmakers what university athletes to be punished for protesting at sporting events after the wave of summer protests in the wake of the george boyd murder students in particular are organizing in protesting in solidarity with black lives matter college athletes are no exception particularly in sports that both large amounts of black participation like but ball and basketball every single g.o.p. member of the tennessee senate find a letter after the men's basketball team at east timothy state university milt during the national anthem the republican delegation the state senate is asking the university to implement policy banning athletes from protesting at all. e.t.a.'s you coach jason say defending his team said many of us don't know the same sacrifice fear pain and loss that people of color have had to endure over 400 years he said his team is a daily reminder to me that some things are bigger than basketball. and turning to
2:40 pm
professional sports golf in p.g.a. champion tiger woods is no longer fighting for his life following a car accident that led to his body being removed with the jaws of life new information released shows the 45 year old golf giant suffers from serious leg injuries including open fractures that required emergency surgery considering tiger's past 5 back surgeries the road to recovery will be long in our interests without them urgency medical treatment he received tiger could have been at risk for amputation here to tell us more is our sports producer for gina hamm welcome regina. well regina we've heard this back and forth time and time again when it comes to the fight between athletes who are protesting and what those protests right should they actually have them and it's all think you're disrespecting the flag or disrespecting those who have served our country valiantly in terms of soldiers and things like that you should not be protesting tennessee has taken this a step further they've decided that they want these athletes to actually be
2:41 pm
punished what do you think what should a response be and lo and why are we seeing this up to these students have a voice it there are you out there trying to make is that this is violating some free speech and it's not the 1st amendment is protecting your freedom your right to protest your free speech you can say whatever you want. they are protesting because they are where in their communities men of color women of color are being murdered attacked by police except they are standing up for what they personally believe now what they're saying is these are universal looking at u.t. martin you teach at new austin peay other schools in tennessee they're they're asking these schools hey you shouldn't let your athletes be allowed to do this now they are going to be made there's no case for this to stand up because these are not employees yes they're kids on scholarship but they're not employees now it's kind of like when you have employees like you should have political views fine that's all right so that's why people you know saying my retreat of whatever is not endorsement these are athletes they should i mean these are employees you write say whatever they want they are not employed by these universities and the fact you're
2:42 pm
telling them well we need to find a way for you to restrict that is restricting their 1st amendment rights by the party who supposedly wants to protect them interesting isn't it but it's also a reflection of what we're seeing happen in the professional sports where you see you know we saw the reaction to call and now we're seeing a similar type of thing happen at the college sports level where all of these colleges are making major money off of these athletes so the idea that she would have to shift your responsibility to your community specifically if you're a young black person you're seeing what's going on many of these individuals come from impoverished communities have had their own episodic relationships with police officers some of them even while they are playing making money it seems completely ridiculous that they would now be punished for simply having their voices heard and that's the thing is these are these are people who are allowed to have opinions you are allowed to have opinion they're not saying i as a member of the eastern tennessee or you know i i as a vessel team this is my opinion and the coach going up told me say that totally
2:43 pm
endorse that these are athletes who are making their choices to protest on their own and good for their coach for supporting him you don't see a lot of coaches in college sports you know nick saban i'm sure would never support of his players this year like they should not done it so it's good to see that their coach is backing them up and at the end of the day it is their opinion is not their opinion of the university or speaking for the university and they say well when you put that uniform on your. present us here they do but they also still can represent themselves it is that the kind of interesting dynamic you know but i want to actually get to this before we go because we really talk about good things on this show and i think that the recovery you and the fact that tiger woods made it through all of this is pretty incredible. you know what does it look like for him right now and what will you know we can't really predict what the future is going to hold for him he's accomplished enough at this point but you know where were things looking with tiger and his recovery i mean things will look good i mean he's going to have to learn pretty much how to walk again the injuries sustained his right leg compound fractures very your bone is sticking out through your skin it is
2:44 pm
he's going to have to learn how walking is rods in his ankles he has pins these are not things you can see in back of the masters in oh what a little over 2 months he might be there he might not be playing and i think you know if tiger decided this was it after again numerous back surgeries he had a distinguished career he won the masters in 2001000 that was impressive enough if this was to be you know i'm done i think it's ok and we're grateful and we have to focus on the fact he made it out alive we need to ignore all the other things that's not what matters back that he's alive and it's kids have their father and he's breathing and we should be grateful we definitely should be grateful especially after living through last year with what happened to kobe bryant and his family the fact that tiger made it through this regardless of what your opinion is of him as a person or as a player or if you're a fan or you're not a plan just be thankful that there's no i made it through at the end of the day absolutely you know every in sports i should be grateful after all the hardship we've been in the past year most definitely would you know always a pleasure having you on with your wonderful insights into the world of sports a little nice reprieve from all the politics of it thank you so much all right as

there he became a minister in icon and a leader that will become world renowned for his voice and power and the backs let the black live matter movement before it ever had a name it has been a long held belief in the black community that because of malcolm x. ability to reimagine in america stands white supremacy and tear government leaders themselves were responsible for his death. was widely reported that his death came at the hands and command of the nation of islam but new evidence indicates a coordinated effort to eliminate malcolm x. and the threat of his pro black message by none other than the n.y.p.d. and it be our. family members of the slain civil rights leader revealed a letter written by a new york police officer that they believe shows that in my p.d. and f.b.i. were ultimately behind the 965 assassination the letter by then officer raymond would stated that would was compelled by supervisors at the n.y.p.d. to coax members of malcolm x. the security team into committing crimes that led to their west just days before
2:49 pm
malcolm's assassination. the last he members of his security team left new york's audubon ballroom on security would believe the arrests were part of the conspiracy by the n.y.p.d. and f.b.i. to murder malcolm x. who recently left the nation of islam creating some bad blood in a timely for oil for his murder what's contended that him and other officers were hired by the n.y.p.d. to infiltrate civil rights groups and find criminal evidence so the f.b.i. could discredit and arrest them but it was later evidence of an actual government cover up or is it just adding fuel to the fire for conspiracy theories joining us now is civil rights activist and the author of as a condition of your freedom guide to sell we're dimension from societal oppression spirit well comparing. parry we're going to get straight to the point here what do you make of this newly released letter and does this offer credible information of a potential government orchestrated assassination of malcolm x.
2:50 pm
. well this is a 2 sided coin base revelation. one side. of the letter cell. a surprising unmasking of our government. and the other is that he gives no surprise he is the black conscious and ego who all believe that j. edgar hoover who led the f.b.i. at the time had conspired with super black. principals in actives they conspired to murder malcolm x. so it's a give and take in this case. i want to it's long been known that the f.b.i. and what you know n.y.p.d. and cia tracked civil rights leaders like malcolm x. and dr martin luther king throughout the civil rights era and they also targeted the black panthers and we you know recently black lives matter in the black lives

a condition of your freedom you can that is now its violence and that is what made malcolm x. in heat to the very country they sought to me to make great. and carry do you think hollywood drives a lot of the interest or the newfound interest into the murders of people like malcolm x. fred hampton and others we know netflix has produced several docu series on these murders over the past year the film judas in the black messiah has provided a window into the inner workings of government orchestrated murder plots against brad hampton do you think overall these types of films make people want more answers and question government. simply this that is our hope is that cinema even though sometimes older drama times can bring a kernel of truth to the american conscious of the 1992 bill malcolm x. because spike lee 1 did just that and there have been many many to fictions of

factual principles which in our american story. have driven people to take a view back into history and really examine the stories we have been distorted we have been told and hopefully for the younger generations it will allow them and prompt them to dig deeper into america's history in order to make the country's future not the same as. you know it's interesting i read last per for a 2nd they're all poor going to baghdad i think what he said had a lot of power and meaning to it when he talked about the reasons as to why malcolm x. percent of such a real threat to this country you know and why you couldn't see the n.y.p.d. the f.b.i. saying maybe we need to take him out but absolutely i think that you know part of that is because they were already a little bit nervous more than a little bit nervous about black muslims in general in the nation of islam but also

because not the barack megamix commanded hundreds of thousands of people this man is our leadership was really strong i want to bring back to perry and ask him perry racism and white supremacy in the ranks of the police have led to the ultimate character assassination and as we're learning throughout history actual sasa nations that many civil rights leaders why do you think that this cycle continues even today and what can be done in today's cycle to stop it you know when we spoke you see leaders like b o m or groups rise up and then you see that propaganda machine start working against them how can we fight back against that debate. in the uk tell you. i was it became of that very. paradigm of american history and. we saw from the ceiling at the capitol back to the tea party movement the white.
