both we and the danes medicines agency have to respond to reports of possible serious side effects both rimmed mark and other european countries are the danish health authority has yet to make a direct link between the vaccine and reported side effects including blood clots and death but has suspended the shot for 2 weeks they waiting on the results of a european medicines agency probe austria has also suspended a batch of the vaccine after reports of one death after seneca is insisting its job is safe for though a spokesperson confirmed the company is investigating adverse side effects why let's speak now to our mr lawrence younger all of us a professor of molecular oncology joining us here live on r.t. international thanks for coming on the program today denmark is calling this move a precautionary measure is that what you would call it absolutely clearly if you see serious side effects in any vaccine then the important thing to do is to stop vaccination and to fully investigate whether or not that serious effect is calls by
7:03 am
the vaccine could it be a coincidence that both austria and denmark have decided to suspend the vaccine for now. i think when you're vaccinating very large numbers of people you've got to recognize that in the general population there are going to be a fix anyway of people suffering diseases all the time and you need to be sure that when you have beds that you see any effects that you see of the vaccine or not simply because you're vaccinating a large group of individuals who have other health conditions and so you have to look at it very very carefully and that's why you need to take a bit of a breather and investigate the possibility that the vaccine is it associated with these effects as far as i i can tell some of the the e.m.a.'s already looked at this in relation to austria and it's right no no specific links with the vaccine because i've done that study comparing blood clots and other and other effects in
7:04 am
the general health healthy populations let's say the normal population versus the vaccinated population so you have to look at these things very very carefully after seneca has said that its job is absolutely safe and should go forward of course there might be potentially a bit of competition between pfizer and modernity but do you think you think there could be some who may have perhaps a lack of faith in astra zeneca after hearing these reports of adverse side effects i think so and i think there's a been a big issue hasn't there about confidence in vaccines generally and there's been there's been the big issue with the new europe about the effect of age on the on on the on the effectiveness of vaccines. and of course as i say you have to investigate every serious side effect carefully but there is a big commercial dimension to all of this as well why indeed there is a commercial dimension to this as as you say but are there concerns perhaps that the european medicines agency is approving shots faster than they should i've certainly heard people talking on the social spheres about some of these being just
7:05 am
called experimental vaccines. i don't think so i think both the e m a and indeed within the u.k. the m h r a o be very careful to monitor side effects all the way through and record to those very carefully as the vaccines have been rolled out through different clinical trials so i think we're all confident that in very general terms all the appropriate safety measures have been looked at in detail for these vaccines when you start vaccinating millions of people in the real world you'll bound to see some effects i would say the majority of these i suspect will have nothing to do with the vaccine itself but clearly they need to be investigated and we need to provide as much confidence to the general population as possible that the vaccines are safe now mr young there has been some a discussion about the possible need for vaccine passports to enable people to travel i know that brussels is potentially moving ahead with this and what's what's your position on that because ultimately that means that just about everybody has
7:06 am
to have one of these vaccines in order to be allowed to leave their home or cross borders. i think all very concerned remain concerned that even though the vaccines are being rolled out across europe we still have a problem with virus variants and we still have lost ways about how vulnerable populations unvaccinated so we need to think about how we stop the spread of the virus and one way to do that is to ensure that where people are traveling particular traveling between countries that they're not bringing with them new variants of the virus that could create real problems in managing outbreaks we know in europe at the moment there are enormous issues in parts of europe if we look for instance at the czech republic with the you know almost uncontrolled levels of infection enormous pressure on hospitals and so we have to control that and one way to do that is using vaccine passports to make sure that when people are traveling they're not going to get infected and they're not going to spread the virus there

are just an professor of molecular oncology lawrence young thank you very much for your time today appreciate you joining us on r.t. thank you. hundreds of millions of pounds wasted and barely anyone treated that's the story of u.k. emergency hospitals for covert patients due to be closed this month as the country gradually exits its strictest lockdown yet people are starting to question the government's handling of the pandemic and as artists head partridge reports many find it wanting. 4 of england's nightingale hospitals are being closed down they've been built at a cost of 500000000 pounds to preempt a surge in the pandemic but the east london venue treated only 54 patients in the 1st wave while others so not all n.h.s. officials say they served as the nation's safety net since the very early days of the been there make the nightingale hospitals have been on hand as the ultimate
7:08 am
insurance policy in case existing hospital capacity was overwhelmed but many permanent hospitals were already short staffed and unable to release frontline workers to the nightingales the government felt the need to show some of the. centerpiece that they could share what they look how rapidly we have created one thing it was rules and. china managed to create a hospital and once we even even more so i mean there's an element of basically showing of those who are trying to reassure that they were doing and why and when the government starts to do things right now is ensure you're going to get the waste of money because no one asked the question well do we need to really do we need to as it turned out. it also turned out we start them because the main issue was basically stuff and not the actual number of plates that were
7:09 am
available so the whole thing was just. to go well as i can see why that new year medics in covert hotspots were days away from having to choose who would be treated and who wouldn't as record coronavirus admissions forced ambulances to wait outside a n.d. and amid the surge n.h.s. workers had to resort to wearing bin bags due to a lack of personal protective equipment some doctors even received p.p.a. which had gone beyond its expiry date over 2 years the u.k. government has also set aside. cashpoints much criticized coated 19 track and trace system 37000000000 pounds of taxpayers' money prompting a scathing report from a westminster spending watchdog despite the unimaginable resources throwing at this project testing trace cannot point to a measurable difference to the progress of the pandemic british tech space cannot be treated by the government like an a.t.m.

machine we need to see a clear plan and costs better controlled in his budget chancellery she soon x. said the government had spent over 280000000000 pounds during the pandemic over 700000 jobs have been lost and the economy has suffered its biggest drop in 300 he is but tough questions are now being asked about how chunks of that 280000000000 pounds have been spent and the impact that they've had i think a collaboration or very cool reply i mean it's very cool our execution the planning. numbers the breaks of course are printed money and big spurts all the. nicer girl hospitals most of which were not properly was being a complete waste of resources. that the government's a big cross was not looking at how much the issue of the soft resources because

there's no point in. extra hospital facilities if you haven't got the staff to go in. the hospital closures come off the ministers announced they can't afford more than a one percent pay rise for n.h.s. workers nurses have launched a petition calling for a 15 percent salary hike they add they're grateful for public clapping which has become a symbol of gratitude to n.h.s. workers but warned that won't pay the bills meantime more than half a $1000000.00 have already signed the petition one nurse explain just what a one percent pay rise means. to be honest when dissent is quite frankly an insult to us to the profession and to the n.h.s. it's a home for most nurses that equates to around 3 counts a few weeks and in many hostile sites across the it costs more than that to park your car to go to work a market cop we are acutely aware of this financial strain that's the brits on u.k. by the pandemic. we're not saying that we deserve any more than anyone else we're
7:12 am
just saying that we are also they will say what we do and the public sector workers have seen some sadly well deserved raises recently and we've been left out of that again as an n.h.s. and i think what we talk about money and what supportable we've just seems to be 7 years on and it's extra system that we pay for an n.h.s. to how 50 percent pay rise and it would still be money left in the pot after that we see nearly qualified nurses and student nurses already thinking gosh you know if i come into the right korea here we have over 400000 nurses vacancies in the way i'm not really causes patient safety issues across all that what we really need is to fill those vacancies and to have a committed and enthusiastic and educated group and we're not going to achieve unnecessary stuff i'm afraid. italy has launched the world's 1st covert hospital train as it struggles with overflowing wards a doctor say it's
7:13 am
a quick to deal with the critically ill. and i think this is a medical train that has been equipped to transport and treat critically ill patients and dose intensive care costs everybody is organized as a kid to be in the intensive care unit obviously with simply equipment the best c. label to do the job 7 patients can be transported in each carry so in total $21.00 patients in intensive care covered cases have searched again this month for some authorities to put more regions or to the so-called. red zone with the tightest restrictions the health minister says the train can move quickly to whatever part of the country is needed most. hospital train was made available to reinforce the territory where there is a difficulty it's approximately service and national health service that goes where there is a problem or italy is set to become the 1st e.u.

state to make russia's sputnik the vaccine with the launch of production slated for july now the shorts are still waiting for approval from the european medicines agency job developers demanding an apology after a chair branded authorization as russian roulette nevertheless italy expected a manufacturer $10000000.00 doses by the end of the year as the blocks up as huge shortages from western alternatives the president of the italian russian chamber of commerce told us the deal is about people not politics. as for public opinion leaving aside political views everyone is very much looking forward to the vaccine people are waiting for doses not for statements though a great number were coming from pfizer and astra zeneca according to the promises all italians were to be vaccinated by june but unfortunately we can see that it won't be the case therefore there are great hopes for sputnik v i wouldn't say that the reason it's widely anticipated is because it's
7:15 am
a russian vaccine people want to get any vaccine and certainly one with a reasonable price and these religious sticks and sputnik the meets those expectations i believe that's been in the perfectly fits into the logic of the made with russia label let me give you a specific example the russian direct investment fund was looking for european pharmaceutical company incorporation with which you could produce a vaccine in europe as the russian italian chamber of commerce we couldn't sit idle we examined all the information concerning the vaccine i personally was one of the 1st foreigners inoculated with sputnik v. we understand there is no life for development without a vaccine and geopolitics shouldn't be a priority all the focus should be. peoples health and business. and all the job innovation is not the only a russian. breakthrough of the russian institute of immunology is testing the 1st drug that stops the virus spreading and people already suffering from the disease of the head of the institute told us about the ongoing trials with the clinical

trials of near 19 kicked off at the beginning of this year at the moment the 1st phase concerning its safety is coming to a close and we expect it to be completed by the middle of march and then as part of the 2nd phase we will proceed to the examination of its efficacy on patients the medicine is designed to stop a virus from replicating itself it's clear already that this drug will be administered in an inhaled form as for the period of effectiveness it's hard to say right now certainly the earlier an infected person takes the medicine the better it will work however given its immediate focus on blocking the replication of the virus we believe it can be effective at any stage of illness anyway let's wait until we get the results of the 2nd phase. next an ultimatum to lawmakers germany's ruling coalition has reacted to it vost face masks a for profit scandal involving senior m.p.'s by demanding written proof from all

party members that they haven't been lining their pockets the alliance is ultimately scrambling to recover its reputation ahead of crunch state elections this weekend. put all of the reports. german politics tends not to do scandal and drama as readily as their partners in italy france or even the united kingdom but the so-called mosque affair has already claimed 2 scalps in german politics and it might not be done just yet the 2 that have gone already are nicholas loeb or from the christian democratic union party that's after his company was understood to have profited by around 250000 euro for being the middleman in a deal to provide masks and p.p. while a new sly and a senior figure within the christian social union has also said he won't be running at the next election after it's understood he made around 600000 euro

lobbying for a must supply it during the 1st 1st lockdown in the pandemic mr mifflin says he's done nothing wrong but he is facing a corruption probe in his local party in bavaria over that well what the reason that this is so important is because this 2021 is what's called a super election year in germany serious votes are going to be cast culminating in september when is the national election that will elect who will be the the replacement the successor to angola merkel before we get there though it all kicks off on sunday with regional elections in the states of biden vote and book on the rhineland latinate that has prompted senior figures in the conservative union in german politics to say to all of its members all of its politicians by 6 pm on friday you've got to sign this declaration that you have had nothing to do with
7:19 am
punt demick profiteering as m.p.'s you stand up to citizens and local companies to see yourselves as having a special responsibility for the common good it is just clear that the task must not result in any personal or financial benefits. plus a slow rollout of vaccinations across germany will be watched keenly to see how that translates at the polls in those 2 key states on sunday the big issue for this though is that the look into pandemic profiteering could well end up casting a wide net looking at earnings for politicians outside of the bundestag if that happens which it looks like it is going to that could well be some more financial skeletons found in various people's closets meanwhile half of all care home workers in france are refusing to get the covert job despite having to work closely with the elderly at high risk from the disease there are concerns about the short safety
7:20 am
as well as mistrust of the government behind the inoculation dr will be addressing this just a bit later in the program. when you have a government that's been able to print money willy nilly without and without any accountability and whatsoever you need some barca reaction to that used to be in the form of the bond market. that would call my gosh they're printing so much money we're going to drop bonds or of the gold bugs would say oh my gosh you know gold's going to go higher because the government's out of control but both of those 2 have been euthanized we don't have bond vigilantes or gold anymore. is a more big coin is confiscated and nobody is going to put
7:21 am
a big coin what to do. you know what this money printing is out of control and we're going to. ironic that all the people that are in the big point bubble talk about the other bubbles that the fed has inflated without recognizing that they're in a bubble themselves i mean it's like a bubble is generally in the eye of the beholder nobody can tell their own bubble and so you've got all these people who are involved in the crypto bubble they can see it. could have you with us today for your news a consumer goods multinational unit is dropping the word normal from old skin care products the u.k. says that would makes some customers feel excluded we know that removing normal from our products and packaging will not fix the problem but it's an important step
7:22 am
forwards the company's international survey found more than 2 in 3 people thought using the word normal had a negative impact you know levels also ending excessive editing of photographs of models and it's appetising but so far there's been a backlash against both the news. so sick of woke n'est taken to p.c. extremes normal means not only and not dry do we have to turn every term on the planet into enclosing a t p c i've never been able to use normal shampoo but at least i know that it isn't suitable for my dry and or oily hair thank god i have always felt marginalized with my dry scalp every time in the shampoo aisle i would have to seek out a safe space because of the pain and anguish caused by seeing the word normal and my inability to ever have normal hair you know leverage just saved my life your liver will drop the word normal from mutant brother it's yes up to decades of cell
7:23 am
in fairness creams in india you know of us trying to rebuild its reputation in time after global criticism last year over its marketing of skin whitening products and asia we discussed it's a ban on the word normal with guests. there's no way ordinary people think this in those kinds of numbers when it comes to the word normal the other thing about using models and changing the shots oh i agree with but the normal thing this is purely them over reacting to the trouble they landed themselves in i think it's important that they are talking about this and they are going to do this because. it's needed we need to keep pushing change in the industry i mean you know body and and we have 31 of the most inclusive agencies and i don't think enough times to doing enough to how that can haynes inclusive and stay away from normal this is marketed this is a bit like we're going to change tomato sauce so it's going to be green we're going
7:24 am
to turn salad cream into a different color we're going to start making solid cream this is just a pathetic attempt to grab more market share and also so i can i disagree i don't think that's that's and i think the 3rd leaving the it was all is not it doesn't i disagree so i have to agree and then i mean we we've recently hired a model who went through an accident he has today scarring she actually you know think. she is doing very well now a fee is going to be shocking to see but this is imposed and this is what we should be seeing and i think removing normal is important for not a people have asked so i had great. there's the idea of normal i would agree with you that if somebody has got a disability or whatever could do not understand what they call the motos or take on board completely but it's the word normal when it comes to things like shampoo for a normal hair well it is our the normal greasy or dry or cracked or damaged i think
7:25 am
doing what they're doing or they're talking about removing almost stopping editing and editing especially on social media this is you know there is a definite trend against that. and i think what they are doing is a step in the right direction it is not the be all and end all but it is moving forward so i think it's an indication i don't think they're necessarily doing it to ground press i think it's needed doing this purely to get market share and they're doing it purely because of their offensive products that they had before 10000 people i'd love to see the steps of let's see the demographic of the 10000 people that they asked him whether they confuse the question ability or being confused or not my friend where you think it's about normal imagery would your grandmother would normal i don't object to any of the rest of it but the word normal it's world nonsense it's all done for marketing and you shouldn't be falling for it because

they're making a mug of you. only half of french home staff are prepared to get the covert job with distrust of vaccines and the government of being cited a corresponding a solid defense if ah this report. they are all the workers on one of the front lines battling against it caring for patients many of which are vulnerable in residential care homes across france homes which have been some of the hardest hit by the virus official figures say that around $25000.00 people in care homes have died as a result of the pandemic so you'd think their carers would be lining up to get the vaccine but that's not the case. many house workers are free to vaccinate it on we have lost a confidence in the government over the vaccine process people are concerned about side effects so some want to wait and get more information. front is known for
7:27 am
having a high level of vaccine skepticism but amongst health workers the rate is even higher the concern over low uptake is even prompted the health minister to intervene health care workers who get vaccinated is not only protect themselves but also patients and residents i ask you fuel cells your colleagues with the people of france if you're not you're vaccinated quickly espouse a collective security and the capacity for health system to function but. says the government has been partly responsible as it's locked clarity over the vaccines doubts have also been fueled by president mark corn who claimed the astra zeneca short was quasi effective for older persons. who are curious who want to be vaccinated prefers a pfizer shot because we're told it's 90 percent
7:28 am
a factor but there. isn't a 70 percent effective so it's understandable that the medics and the rest of the population are one of the most effective options but there has been so much. mation about the vaccines and now we're really confused this is another reason warehouse workers don't want to get in. other concerns have been raised around the side effects from the astra zeneca jab last month around 150 health workers who received it reported suffering off 2 words from high fever that was temporary and not apparently dangerous but it's enough to make some people think twice the situation is now so bad that the national academy of medicine is recommending making the couvade vaccine compulsory for health workers while some talk about conspiracy theories is the reason that so many are refusing to be vaccinated the c g
7:29 am
t union says this is more of a problem with communication all a lot of it health workers including care workers want up to date medical information to make up their minds my own situation i know i just think housework is selfish they're not they're locked into to get a vaccine but this should not just tick more dice for them they want to protect the people they care for the patients and care home residents as the vaccination program continues to be ruled out the government is attempting to persuade health workers that having the job is good for them and of course with those that they care for if that doesn't succeed the government may have to take things a step further and make the vaccine compulsory geology auty paris at half past the hour here in moscow wrapping up this hour's headlines for you here at r.t. international that we are back in about 41 minutes time you can join us then.
