a school principal hitting a 6 year old student with a wooden paddle now the video was recorded by her mother she came to the school in order to pay a fine for the damage to property now the mother did not speak english and feared for her immigration status so rather than intervene she discreetly took out her phone and recorded how the principal spanked her daughter with the help of another staff member nobody would have believed me i stick to my daughter so old parents can realize what's happening in the school now the official rules of county school don't permit for students to be hit but apparently it does happen however many counties throughout florida do have official policies permitting the use of corporal punishment elementary school principals are now able to paddle misbehaving students in marion county and many people at our morning news meeting wondered could bay area schools be next piece of video showing 2 adults at an elementary school in georgia prepared to paddle a 5 year old child it's perfectly legal in that state and in 18 other states 19

u.s. states maintain laws allowing corporal punishment in public schools and almost every state keeps it legal in private schools now some say this is just part of the religious and traditional cultures of some regions throughout the united states but others say this is an outdated authoritarian practice pretty much child abuse and it has no place in modern education if our point in giving indication to our children they would employ reduces the amount of education and. mindset than a child could have while learning so i would say since that's the point of going to school been. doing with a wooden board is counterproductive to all children having the possibility to excel in schools will be so poor school or very well preschool children do better when they feel safe people across the country have very strong opinions about this disciplinary practice i feel like that's a something that a parent should do like that kind of discipline should come from parents and

need to be hammered out by the d.a.'s office but let's talk about the child here and her mother who witnessed this assault how much trauma are the little girl and her mother experiencing right now. believe me i mean when i when i saw this video now i have to tell you i cringed because i just can't believe this is going on in the united states of america or anywhere at this day and age i literally couldn't believe it and i as you know i work with trauma my center has been number one for p.t.s.d. i've worked with hundreds and hundreds of patients at the church. this is definitely traumatic and this is going to last with this child for the rest of this child's life and it's very sad it's extremely sad that. this is definitely child abuse and i just can't believe that it's going on and it makes me very very sad to see that you know you put a child in school because they're supposed to be safe there and this is how they're

being treated now. it's scary well when they get arrested i think. does corporal punishment actually work i mean what what does this type of discipline the so-called discipline is supposed to 3rd to do. well i guess it's supposed to try to get kids to change their behavior but what it does is it traumatizes people because it's putting someone in a fight or flight response right they're not going to think rationally they're going to be in survival mode and a lot of people once they get into survival mode they can't kick themselves out of it you realize that when something traumatic happens to somebody it could happen when they're younger and they feel the effects when they're a lot older they could be 60 years old and because they were hit they still are affected by that i've treated people want this mela wow that i've had to change their memories because of things that their abusers did or their parents did i had

a patient who was basically hit every day and it affected. you know tactical or yeah absolutely and as you know now most most of those with multiples in the country are slowly returning to normal and this pandemic do you think the strath from this pandemic could have played into why the principal took the sort of action on on a child like was she stressed out as many teachers and administrators seemed to be and perhaps misplaced her anger and frustration. well you know i don't know what was going through her mind none of this is right a lot of people are very stressed out because of the pandemic and it's really taken its toll on people it's made people very angry it's mean people become very irrational and have that's had an effect you know on their relationships on their performance at work especially when they have to practice patience and tolerance but if it is something that's seen as ok within the school system in that

particular county then and they've made it ok that was something that was going well and way before you know the pandemic so that's a legal matter and like i said before i mean i was completely appalled when i saw that because as far as i'm concerned that's complete child abuse any time a child is being hit you have to report it so i can't even believe that that something like that is ok and legal it's definitely not ethical yeah yeah and real briefly some people are calling racism on this principle melissa carter who is white the child and her mother are hispanic in fact the mother is undocumented doesn't speak much english how might race or perceived social status or hierarchy have played into this incident. i mean there's always there's always racism that always comes up but you know you see and that is a real issue in our society i know i'm i'm half hispanic myself and have
