live from the world headquarters of r t america our nation's capital. with rick sanchez. hi everybody i'm rick sanchez and i want to welcome our viewers from all over the world including those of you are watching us right now on the portable t.v. out there is a story that we are following right now that sounds like something. that happens often here in the united states let me show you what we're talking about it's a gunman that has burst into a school and he has started shooting he's injured at least 16 people killed 7 children it sounds like something that would happen in a place like kansas right or arizona but this shooting you're looking at right
2:01 pm
there that's russia. it's happened in a russian city called. thirty's with the national anti-terrorism agency say the shooter has now been apprehended the area is in lockdown motive is still unknown expect to get a lot more information on this story as well we're going to be following it for you throughout this newscast throughout the day but there's another tragedy that's taking place in another part of the world and this one is. this was not a surprise because it's been occurring off and on now for almost 70 years and that's about how long this conflict between the israelis and the palestinians has been going on in fact overnight it's really heated up violence shelling aerial attacks have been occurring we've we've been monitoring these pictures furnished by the associated press and they show the constant. clock the anti-aircraft of the shooting this is in the area of gaza and jerusalem by the way
2:02 pm
where some of these incidents of taken place in fact i want to share with you some headlines this is from haaretz right one of his rules leading newspapers there report that israeli defense forces have assassinated the chief of islamic jihad's special rocket unit here's another headline from the rats 28 palestinians in gaza 10 children reported to have been killed during the attack and expect those numbers to change throughout the course of the day israel has also killed 3 top israeli job militants according to the government and dozens of israelis have also been wounded from shelling coming in from the palestinian border so. what is the genesis of all of this it's a bitter dispute over settlements as israelis move into neighborhoods and in acworth they call it vic shin's the palestinians argue they're not evictions
2:03 pm
they're simply forced displacements. so are palestinians being affected as part of a routine real estate conflict or are they being forced off their own land as an illegal displacement this is what we are going to be debating right here on the news rick sanchez let's get at it we believe it's time to do news again. here's a list of the questions we think are going to be asking tomorrow as you watch this newscast today displacement or evictions which is occurring to palestinians why are all sure you have france or japan conducting joint military exercises and why is a pulitzer prize winning journalist warning americans about president biden. by let's get started tonight with what appears to be
2:04 pm
a bloody conflict in gaza just a moment ago we were monitoring some pictures these are some images i don't know if we've got those now kevin but we've got some images there it is that's a live picture you're looking at right now over gaza and as you watch these pictures from time to time you will see what appears to be some form of strafing anti-aircraft going back and forth between some of the israeli air ships and some of the folks on the ground there the palestinians who are trying to combat them as we put this story together we you know we are dealing with a story that essentially hasn't been able to see a compromise in more than 60 years but the latest source of this friction is all about something called settlements. he did were in the region john howard worked for years about war correspondent based in jerusalem he reports today on the latest in the overnight fighting between palestinians and the israelis. 2
2:05 pm
israelis have been killed and at least $26.00 palestinians including reportedly 9 children in gaza as the cross border fighting intensifies in what has been the most intense escalation of fighting since 6 days of cross border fire in november 2019. in israel 2 women were killed when a rocket hit their apartment building in the city of ashkelon just north of the gaza strip more than 400 rockets have been fired from gaza into israel since monday as israel continues to launch air strikes on targets in gaza the i.d.f. israel defense forces says it has struck 130 quote unquote military targets in gaza according to a military spokesperson mostly belonging to hamas the i.d.f. says 90 percent of the rockets that penetrated the gaza israeli border were intercepted by israel's iron dome defense system at least $122.00 people meanwhile
2:06 pm
have been reportedly injured in israel since monday all this says the protests and violence also continues in east jerusalem and the old city where the clashes started about a month ago when israeli residents in a neighborhood of east jerusalem received a court order to have it 6 palestinian families while that case plays out in court the violence only increased the past month old timidly erupting to the point we're seeing now fueled by political instability in both israel and the west bank. and the i.d.f. the israel defense forces says about 90 percent by the way of the rockets fired from gaza into israel are intercepted by what's called the iron dome rocket defense system and as the fighting continues wreck israel is calling up 5000 reserve soldiers as egypt is now reportedly engaged in intensive talks with israel and also hamas and islamic jihad in gaza to try the big key word try and broker a cease fire possibly something as soon as wednesday but that said israeli prime
2:07 pm
minister benjamin netanyahu said that the fact that rockets from gaza were aimed at jerusalem crossed a quote unquote red line and that israel he said would attack in response with increased strength and frequency john hardy reporting for us on the situation that continues even as we speak in gaza between the israelis and the palestinians thanks so much john joining us now. is really author who argues for a palestinian rights also joining us is alan grayson who is a former congressman from florida who argues of defense of israeli defense policies my thanks to both of you for being with us you come at this from conflicting points of view alan let me start with you the conversation really is a lot about the settlements the israelis say look there are victims of the palestinian say no there there are people being forced off of their own land how
2:08 pm
would you characterize it. i don't think that makes a difference what matters of the facts not the words that we use to describe them i think it's fair to say that the israelis have been aggressive in trying to clear land for us for many years what's most important at this particular moment is that this conflict is occurring right at the time when the most inclusive government and israeli history was about to be formed and i have to think that extremists on both sides are doing everything they can to prevent this unity of government from being formed and. why we're seeing what we are seeing today we go what do you make about the fact that. you know we're not going to get in an argument alan suggests about what words we call it whether they're being forced off their land or they're being affected that we really need to look at is the fact that we have the potential to form a government that's actually going to be able to help the palestinians. some groups but it isn't you know larry this is you wanted this tyrant's because you know this
2:09 pm
is this way. and it makes a great deal of difference or to use you use your life or some of the tradition. and. words. it's actually not. it's exactly. 5 years how many dreams. you know. it's best later that he claims it. just sort. of cranks professors. are liars they are slated to be kicked out rise from gaza just know they go out of my mother's house and never get the pictures as you see them of your. words matter a great deal here it's all about the words it's all a fact that even. came up and said that israel is doing its part sides are tied to playing it and they know. the situation because for

politics here the budgetary and the reality is that. people. are getting the solidarity. and. unity and you start when it's a dream and should it evolve during worship these are ideas that are well. it was the right words because these people are nasty they're big more low. let's give a chance to chime in here. is it difficult at times to defend israelis actions because they do appear certainly image wise to be extremely aggressive and let's face it. the palestinians seem like david here compared to like a lion to use a biblical phrase. well rick it's difficult to defend israel against the kind of
2:11 pm
crazy talk that we just heard from your other guest to compare what's happened in the west bank to quote ethnic cleansing is incredibly irresponsible all the settlers together occupied less than 10 percent of the west bank he think about the actual issues the incidents of ethnic cleansing that we've seen historically like armenia and i compare that to what's happening now and israel and it's almost criminal to talk about it that way and when you're talking about it with such extreme terms and then yes that words do start to matter because you're vilifying an entire people you're vilifying the people of israel which isn't the 1st time that's happened so with regard to your question listen i agree with this or whatever israel's right to just like when i was in congress i agree with president obama whenever president obama is right and that's it that's as far as i go but i think that there's a real danger in trying to turn people against an entire culture against an entire nationality like your guest is trying to do against israel right now you make it
2:12 pm
sound he says maaco like the israelis are just by nature of evil people like your demonizing them away some argue they might try and demonize palestinians how do you respond to alan's accusation against. you know. there. was a general. i i actually no. i'm not a. nurse he slides but reality is. the deputy fire brigade rest of the southwest in the south so most understood question that's. where the policy is that they are if you get asked because of the of the classic. he doesn't want the world leaders of the. international
2:13 pm
organizations or. state because the more of this these crimes are. and i see. this there's crouse hardest to get your hands were these crimes are well i mean i know what i'm talking about because they gave. people my son who was involved in creating that state so i don't think marcus is a worse. mico one of them and if you could keep your answer to 30 years i want to get allen i want to get on the last word but what about the rocket fire into israel that the palestinians have been doing and did last night by the way some 30 some israelis were apparently injured. yes well the spokesman for the our state department said that there is the right of people most of the class yeah right they have rights you know this with.
2:14 pm
cell phones. they're trying to defend or trying to befriend their friends and are found most of that interest them are being thrown out of their own and this is what they're doing. to the. violence is real and. over and over again what do you expect the but i'm not going to break in mold duality in this situation what should they do why what what what would you counsel them to do what they have to move can do. terrorism some type some people in jerusalem are being forced out of their homes that's being countered with missile attacks against civilian populations and literal terrorism people throughout south israel now other parts of israel live in terror because of these fanatics and if you want to relive again what happened in 1948 that's one thing but if you want to talk about what's happening today the palestinians are wrong wrong wrong you do not launch missiles at civilian populations period mico alan my thanks to you both good
2:15 pm
debate smart and passionate we appreciate it. this is the news with rick sanchez and when we come back chris hedges joins us to talk about the brand new article of his all about president joe biden he seems to say to americans chris don't trust him we'll be right back with chris his own words. seeing the horrors that arise with money and evil. corporate criminals who trashed countless lives to add just one more dollar to their millions. they threaten they bribe they'll do anything to keep their crimes in the door but the

going to look forward to that conversation that's coming up in just a little bit but 1st i want to catch you up on something else that's going on right now and this has to do with that situation we've been sharing a bit about the south china sea so many different countries have been suddenly interested in doing military exercises there and now there's a new batch japan apparently is joining australia and france with the united states to conduct military exercises in that part of the world the obvious signal that they're sending to china is don't you dare try and push us right there countering china here's archies alex behind a bitch with this story. western allies have picked their common threats of the day and china is at the top of the list be committed to working together to take on the challenges from china and on issues like the east china sea the south china sea as well as north korea to ensure a future of a free and open indo pacific. japan the united states are 2 strong
2:19 pm
democracies in the region we're committed we're committed to defending advancing our shared values including human rights and the rule of law now japan and the u.s. have been joined by france and australia to show that their stance against china is more than just words as a response to a growing concern regarding trying his assertiveness in its region before countries are participating in a week long run of air land and sea military exercises the show of force follows a slew of accusations against china from g 7 foreign ministers at their recent gathering this was the chinese government's response secretive and down to the 7 porn ministers meeting made groundless accusations against china it's lamely meddling in china's internal affairs and engaging in blocking holon tell us what you think gross interference in china sovereignty email wanton destruction of the norms of international relations and contrary to the trends of the times of people
2:20 pm
development and win win cooperation with china strongly condemns the drills which are being held in the southwest part of japan include fighter jets and b.b.'s operation exercises at sea at japanese submarine and 10 ships including 6 from japan 2 french one australian and america's u.s.s. new orleans are participating in the joint exercises to crush a couple cami the head of the institute of world studies at tackle shoko university told a.f.p. the drill is no doubt a deterrent to china's increasingly aggressive behavior in the region japan has had long time territorial concerns in areas of dispute with china beijing has made claims to the japanese administered some cuckoo islands and through the years there has been chinese military activity in the area the latest military exercises which include european nations are a rarity in japan and are clearly an effort on that country's part to expand and consolidate military alliances in an effort to deter china for r.t.
2:21 pm
. i'm alex mileage. you just saw president biden there well interestingly enough according to a recent poll president joe biden's approval ratings are gigantic certainly when compared to his predecessors the associated press now has mr biden at 63 percent that means 63 percent of americans polled seem to approve of how he's handling the country why explanations may have to do with the fact that unlike his predecessor he's not bombastic or barely even visible comparatively speaking but the real reason for his popularity may have to do with what he's promised to do create more jobs through a huge infrastructure plan tax the rich provide college tuition for free increase medicare medicaid the list so far and there's a lot more to it seems to read like a dessert menu for progressives but is there a catch a next guest says you betcha chris hedges has is an award winning former 'd new
2:22 pm
york times correspondent the host of on contact here at r.t. america and he's written a column where he warns americans with these words don't be fooled by joe biden chris joins us live now to explain what he is saying in his column explain to us chris what you mean by don't be fooled by the guy with a 63 percent a.p. approval rating right now. well he has a high approval rating as did obama when he came into office obama was also compared to f.d.r. and then turned out to quote the phrase by my friend cornel west to be a black mascot for wall street biden has long serve the interests of the business elites and lead he was chosen by obama to be a vice president because in essence he voted has voted republican they used to call him senator a credit card most of the big credit card companies are based in delaware he has
2:23 pm
you know he was an author of the patriot act nafta on and on and on and then of course in the clash with bernie sanders the democratic party elite made it very clear lloyd blankfein the former c.e.o. of goldman sachs and other major figures in the democratic party said that if sanders was the nominee they would vote for trump trump was distasteful in that he didn't bring the gravity and decorum to the management of empire that the elites want they knew biden would do that and when you look at his plan remember biden on the campaign trail had said that he would when he got to office right to $2000.00 stimulus checks that got reduced to $1415.00 minimum wage has collapsed his infrastructure plan is not is clearly going to be whittled down by the senate and his relief package is essentially handing large sums of money to states and to corporations that's just another version of trickle down economics so then how does
2:24 pm
it work how is it that all my friends and the folks that i interviewed from time to time on the right can't have it so wrong they say he's a communist a socialist but he's going to absolutely give away the country to all the poor people and the rich are going to be a lock i mean they literally have have a could worse view of him than you do explain that to us. well but that was true in the obama administration rick i mean they made those same charges against obama when the track record is quite clear obama serve the interests of wall street indeed bailed wall street out bailed out the people who carried out the financial fraud at the expense of the victims of that fraud so that's a rhetorical feint i'm not sure they believe it and in fact i think most of them are probably quite comfortable with biden biden is not going to touch structurally the for profit health care system he has called for an increase in his budget
2:25 pm
military budget by 11000000000 dollars 1.6 percent increase and that's you know over $750000000000.00 so yeah i think that is just part of the kind of political game but the reality is that he has always been and remains essential in a creature of the corporate elites so he that would be more expression is a walking representation of that that saying we hear all the time that nowadays in america there really is no difference between a democrat and a republican is that right well there is a difference but there isn't much of a difference so let's talk about the his call to tax the rich well what he's really talking about is restoring tax rates that doesn't even reach pre trump levels remember under reagan the wealthiest corporations and individuals were taxed at 40 percent go back to eisenhower republican president the legacy of the new deal
2:26 pm
you're talking 91 percent so there's certainly movement but it's not significant movement it doesn't threaten the death grip that the corporate power has on our political system and let's be clear the goldman sachs' there is no way to vote against the interests of goldman sachs in our political system whether you're voting for trump or whether you're voting for biden do you believe he joe biden the man knows that much of what he's saying isn't true and isn't going to come to pass that he's actually being dishonest. that's a good question i think he's pretty shown that he's pretty intellectually limited in the same way that george w. bush was was an election limited in some ways this makes obama more culpable because he wasn't intellectually limited i'm not sure what biden knows and what biden doesn't know he strikes me as a pretty empty vessel he has throughout his political career shifted with the winds remember he was the super predator and he orchestrated the whole militarization of
2:27 pm
the police the explosion of mass incarceration the 3 strikes you're out laws even though his own son struggled with addiction i sense a kind of vacuity there but again that's conjecture sounds like he's a guy who's been playing a role. you know i mean that's what he does and that's what i that's what political theater is about you play a role look reagan that's reagan did that very well and so did trump i mean let's hand it to trump he did it better than jeb bush and mitt romney and all the others but that's what it's become and it's not about substance it's about playing a role and he plays a role is kind of like being there early they trot him out and he reads from the teleprompter chris hedges nobody like thanks chris always a great conversation thanks for the call and thanks for the wisdom pretty good thoughts. that is our news thanks so much for being with us i'm rick sanchez by the way when we come back we're going to tell you more about what's going on throughout
