3:00 pm
live from the world headquarters of the r.t. america in our nation's capital this is the news with rick sanchez it's part of i'm rick sanchez and i'm here to welcome all of you who are watching us from all over the world including those of you who are watching us on the portable t.v. ok so let's get started right now both federal and state officials are warning americans to not panic when it comes to gasoline shortages they say there really isn't a shortage right now but there will be if americans start panic buying the problem with that request is that there really kind of a shortage now it's not caused because there just isn't enough gas out there it's
3:01 pm
caused by a gas line that had to be shut down 'd due to a happy still i want you to look at this these are images i want you to see this is these are gas stations across the mid atlantic and southern states places like virginia georgia north carolina where motorists are finding pumps that are either covered up or with signs indicating there is no gas to be had out of service so to them anyway it's a shortage especially to those who are having to wait an hour in line to get gas from only one working pump right. this shortage is being caused by a group called dark side which allegedly hacked and is now extorting millions of dollars maybe more from a company that operates the colonial pipeline the pipeline has now been shut down
3:02 pm
since last friday did you know so how did this how to do this right how were they hacked so the hackers are using ransomware it's a type of malware to scramble a company's computer data such only holding it hostage and kill for ransom is paid no money no gas or no flow right now both the company and the f.b.i. are involved as we speak can you imagine by the way this is no small pipeline colonial service is a 7 airports operates in 14 states is system and is among the largest in the united states funnels about 100000000 gallons of fuel every single day here's another important question does it have a remedy for this well sort of for now the company is saying it's working with shippers to transport about 41000000 gallons to delivery points along its
3:03 pm
pipeline as a makeshift effort to try and supply gas so they're using big trucks meanwhile will gas prices go up you betcha already have. and i bet you have a lot of questions about all of the so do we so we've invited an energy expert to try and take us through what's going on here how bad 3 might it get on the news reports and she has what we believe it's time to do news again. so here are the questions we think will come to mind as you watch this when is that gas shortage not a gas shortage and how long might it last why are the chinese sending fishing fleets to refund the middle of the ocean and this tom cruise deserve
3:04 pm
a tongue lashing for a publicity stunt. right now this apparent gas shortage that is paranoid not a shortage right here's what we know the price of gas has just jumped to about $3.00 a gallon for the 1st time as you probably know in a long time so it's up and continuing to go up this is really a weird development that involves the f.b.i. potentially billions of dollars and more importantly you right your ability to buy gas and be able to get from point a to point b. so we're going to cover this from several different angles we're going to begin with veteran journalist and boom bob boom bust host who happens to know a little bit about this and the hacking incident ben sauron he starts us off. already the lines of cars are absolutely incredible as this shortage of gasoline is impacting the east coast of the united states just for instance here in metro atlanta where i am right now 60 percent of gas stations are reporting outages of
3:05 pm
gasoline and gas prices jumped just above $3.00 a gallon wednesday and many stations in the southeast were out of fuel the governors of florida north carolina and virginia have declared states of emergency to make sure there are enough supplies of fuel so when we say gas shortage just how many gas stations are completely out of fuel with the supply crunch appears to be much worse in some major metro areas gas buddy reported outages impacting 71 percent of stations in metro charlotte nearly 60 percent in atlanta 72 percent in raleigh and 73 percent in pensacola so that is creating huge problems for drivers but what about air traffic because the colonial pipeline carries jet fuel as well american airlines rerouted to long haul flights from charlotte north carolina because of possible shortages southwest and united flights carried extra fuel on flights to nashville tennessee baltimore and some other airports in case jet fuel was unavailable at those airports the f.b.i.
3:06 pm
has said that an online gang known as the dark side struck the colonial pipeline system with a ransomware attack which takes computerized systems hostage into a payment is made by the administration says that it will help to resolve this by getting fuel throughout the east coast and southeast by loosening restrictions on tanker truck travel and moving fuel by rail and even cargo ship but in the short term the panic may only get worse. yeah and there is a bigger problem here too when we talk about the issue of whether or not there is actually a gash. here's the reality on the ground if you go to a gas station in metro atlanta right now you'll see just as we started the show with stickers and sticky notes and papers that say no fuel no gasoline available so even though we're being told there is no gas shortage there is definitely a supply shortage for consumers who are trying to access it the other thing that is causing a lack of confidence for consumers right now is the fact that we are now in day 6
3:07 pm
into this colonial pipeline shutdown and because we're not hearing any word on whether or not it all ransom has been paid will be paid whether or not the good guys are able to react to this this pipeline and get it back on line consumers and drivers have very little confidence in whether or not this will last another few hours few days or will it go weeks or even months on end and that rick more than anything else is causing a lack of confidence from drivers who are simultaneously being told don't panic there's no shortage but from a hacking perspective this is fascinating the fact that some company is. asked to pay a ransom and until they pay that ransom we are essentially all being held hostage do we know if the f.b.i. ok with them paying the ransom. so the position that's being taken right now by the biden administration is that this is a private company and so they're not going to weigh in on it which indicates to me
3:08 pm
just knowing how these things have worked in the past typically you know governments will say we don't support pain or ransom actually hear the biden ministries and say well this is a private company and they can decide what they want to do about a ransom indicates that this is going to be a much harder issue to deal with if you don't pay the ransom this is happened by the way records you know to a lot of municipalities where their systems are shut down what we don't know about this group the dark side they're out of the former soviet union soviet republic and so these guys who came on the scene last fall seem to be very sophisticated in what they're doing they could have these systems tied up for weeks or even months at a time and that's way way too long and i magine it's going to be an issue not just for the f.b.i. but for the cia to try and find out who these folks are what they're doing and maybe not pay them or pay them we'll just have to wait and see if the gas starts flowing once again good stuff great report i want to bring in an expert on this now his name is todd horwitz he's the founder and c.e.o.
3:09 pm
of apple you named bubba trading i've always 'd wanted to say that in a report bubba thanks so much for joining us i certainly appreciate you being there can you what's your perspective on all of the i mean i don't even bigger question is do hear i just want to hear your wisdom. and granted me with your record i think the 1st thing you want to look at is of course as usual american star power panicking ok now there is going to be a little bit of a shortage here but you know it does not help that everybody is running to the gas station and filling up everything they can and cans tanks and topping everything off this is you know is interesting because we've had sure it is over the years and i actually part of gas through on the seventy's and the problem is that people will not sit back and be calm about this we just came out of a pandemic where we were not even able to go outside so maybe if we relaxed we would allow the flow of gas in the go and then of course you've got the dark side
3:10 pm
of the world where some of the stations that probably still have fuel are holding off until they can jack their prices and increase profit but overall i believe this will be solved and i think the bigger question the bigger problem that needs to be addressed here is how did a hack in and how can a country and anybody in the united states allow anybody to hack into our systems period and by you should be involved because about it's a private company or a public company this is affecting americans and that's what needs to be taken care of by the president out of state but the more immediate question is what are we going to get our gas i don't know how these pipelines work i just read but go to our viewers that colonial says they're hiring trucks to try and get at least 43 percent of the area covered by getting the gas out there that way will that work. are sure that all work i mean you know they will be able to you know i don't know
3:11 pm
if oh say massively apis applied especially because we're going into more of a driving season right now as yet we approach the summer but i think that this will be 1st of all resolved and they will use trucks and as you heard they lifted the restrictions off of the trucking which will allow us to get more there and you know listen there's a lot of areas in this. country that depend on trucking and so we will be able to supply those in need but what i would bet shoe is going to happen if this continues is there will be a restriction on how often you can get gas because other that people will wait in line for hours to keep filling up everything they can do you expect these folks that kolo deal will actually. pay out this ransom. i don't think so i don't think they will i think we will figure it out i mean sisters larry we have do we do have the are the smartest people in the world there they should be able to figure it out or i would suspect they get replace the system
3:12 pm
that has been hacked now again i am not a computer expert i don't want to get into that part of it but i would suspect we could replace it now i'm just wondering if at this point you heard what i said at the beginning of a newscast when when is a shortage 'd not a shortage would you characterize this as a shortage of this point even though the companies are telling us well no it's not . no of course or the shorters look at the end of the day you can't hide that we're not pumping in more supply you can't hide that we're not going to get what we've been getting on a daily basis through colonial however again a lot of the shortage goes back to the americans panic and we wish it would toilet paper we watch it with the towels you know people get knots and they go crazy over this shortage and they can't put themselves in mind the same that they do in markets themselves if you look at the oil markets themselves they're not exploding like this is going to be
3:13 pm
a major problem yes prices are going to go higher but there is a slight shortage but i think we can resolve it but we really need the help of the american people to sit back and that panic and run to the station and go as needed not just to get it they'll be gone out there topping off your tank every time they're running every half hour that is the advice. we get from from bubba now a lot of hey i really enjoyed talking to you you're a smart guy i can't wait to get you back we'll be watching this and hopefully you'll be able to take i direct pre-shared it right this is the news of what a situation how when we come back in hollywood insider sharon stone is going to be joining us to talk about the future of the golden globes and how this latest controversy affects his family in particular we'll be right back.

3:16 pm
so hey welcome back i'm rick sanchez i'm over here at the wall because i want to show you about something really weird it's happening around the south china sea it's this region right here now this entire region has as we've told you in the past and previous newscast has really been hotly the chinese say this is their territory and to prove it they have now inhabited many of these islands many of them now have their citizens that they've put there they've also turned what are outcrops shoals reefs into islands by piling dirt sand and concrete on to them but neighboring countries like the philippines and vietnam and others are not happy about this because they want to claim the area for shipping lanes and for
3:17 pm
fishing so this is a constant conflict right you kind of know about that but now there's one particular area here in the spratly islands that is. well things have gotten really weird it's a place right there in the middle see that one little red. thing we put there for you that's called and it's so tiny i mean it's a reef right it's called whitson reef it's much closer actually as the crow flies to the philippines than it is to china. but china wants to claim it and that is why it has now done this look at this see this look at these ships they're like more doubt next to the reef $300.00 of them china has said 300 of these fishing vessels into the area. or at least they're supposed to be fishing vessels but when you look at it the way they're lined up in the way they're
3:18 pm
organized right it looks more like a military maneuver in fact some are saying that there are military personnel on board the ship but it's not a military maneuver so the philippines meanwhile are so angered by this by china's move it is now announcing that it will put a military installation there on this reef again remember it's not even an island it's just a reef how do you claim something underwater as if it were land when it's not land you see what i mean about this whole thing really being weird for more on the story here is r t correspondent alex mohan of it's. not too long ago if you ask the president of the philippines which country poses the greatest threat to his nation's sovereignty america is on the list because of that it doesn't look. out of state. we were under them for 50 years and believe the

i'm alex mileage. you know hollywood a short award shows are doing so well these days seem hardly any you watch this year's you know version of the oscars it was a virtual version now the golden globes are coming under fire in fact that actually the golden globes are getting a lot worse i don't know if you've noticed but the los angeles times wrote an exposé where it uncovered some really seanie financial deals and what was a good old boy network that seemed to shun diversity so now actors and activists have been calling for the program to be canceled and cancel them they did n.b.c. has dropped the golden globes and now tom cruise is hopping on the bandwagon for fitting his 3 golden globes awards which many observers are calling up are stocked here's john hardy. the golden globes has lost its luster the hollywood foreign press association responsible for the annual awards is under fire for among other
3:23 pm
things its lack of diversity a los angeles times exposé found that the h.f. p.s.a. reportedly has no black members and serious questions continue to be raised about the organization's finances and member benefits stemming from the millions of dollars that n.b.c. pays for the rights to televise the event every year while now n.b.c. is announced it will not air the ceremony in 2022 the golden globes is the precursor to the academy awards every year and seen as kind of a bellwether as to the movies and actors that will likely receive an oscar but the golden globes ratings have slumped in recent years particularly during the pandemic and now with this latest controversy the hits keep coming for the h.f. p.a.a. hollywood heavyweight tom cruise even gave back his 3 golden globe awards in protest as it scrambles to do damage control the hollywood foreign press association wrote on its website quote regardless of the next air date of the golden globes implementing transformational changes as quickly and as thoughtfully
3:24 pm
as possible remains the top priority for our organization we invite our partners in the industry to the table to work with us on the systematic reform that is long overdue both in our organization as well as within the industry at large well regardless of those changes to come the golden globes has been canceled at least for now anyway the news with rick sanchez john hardy and joining us now to talk more about this is our own hollywood insider he's an author he's also a director he's shot stone and he's also an actor by the way. his father happens to be all of which is. particularly salient during this conversation because that award that i just mentioned that tom cruise decided to give back was for a movie that was directed by your father right sean how's that sitting with you or your dad. i can't speak for my father you know it's all to me it's
3:25 pm
tom's what ward certainly he working with the director is part of what wins it for an actor so you know it did i can say that it may not be you know considered of everyone involved when he gives it back but in that it's a war to do what he wants with and you know is it a publicist and that's the real question look we're in the time where it's canceled culture is is sweeping the world right i mean here we literally looking at council culture working on golden globes 'd and there's different aspects of it to look at because at one level we can say is there a lack of diversity when it comes to to black people in the hollywood foreign press association apparently and yet here it's a foreign press association with members from around the world so i'm sitting here shocked as to how there are no african or black representatives journalists you know and this is so see i should but of course there are there is diversity it's not it's you know they're focusing on on one specific race here and there is the versity overall so it's quite it's really bizarre that it comes up this year and
3:26 pm
then this becomes sort of the kicker when we've known about bribery and i can go into that when it comes to these award shows for a long time so it's like you know why this moment why do we choose this moment and when it comes to you know giving as awards away i think it's a little bit after the fact you know it's like these were not major issues at the time and if they were you know he just declined to go to the ceremonies back then you know like white like you boys something that's now become a topical issue so it is kind of a publisher you think he's not real honest about this he if he were he would have done it a long time ago he would have waited for people to publicize what we already knew about this or. in certain ways yes i mean the word shows have always been problematic i mean with that that's the thing about it it was always an exclusive club and got worse i think over time because when harvey weinstein we knew was this sort of the i mean i was greece at the golden globes right chichi was you know bribery and stuff this was common to that to. taking you know is that it's a sort of inviting journalists having these these green eggs and then conferences
3:27 pm
in places and trying to basically. you know get he said get a grip if you want to he wanted to get these journalists to give you a wards for the golden globes because it would then lead to oscar nominations and how do you sell tickets for some of these movies that are more dramatic in the old days you know it was like you would want to hype around the golden globes or the oscars to sell tickets to make money to make stars so this is an old game and it's funny that now rb is gone this is now coming out. it seems like a controversy for the sake of controversy by the way just for the record i think born on the 4th of july as one of the greatest movies i've ever seen. for what it's worth so thanks to you for joining us and thanks to your dad for directing and. that's thanks so much for being with us we thought we would leave you today to reflect on some of those if you have friends looking for those of like the others.
