yes the. world according. to day we discussed why congress is exists. that the corona virus may have accidentally leaked from a research lab in china we also talk about escalating violence between israel and palestine sit tight the show starts now. but your. question hi i'm bridget as santos for our top story today several members of congress are investigating the possibility that the virus that

causes the disease coated 19 may have accidentally leaks from the ruhani institute of allergy in china where coronavirus research is conducted now as a reminder the 1st cases of covert 1000 were reported in late in december of 2019 well it's been over one years since the pandemic began the specific origins of the pandemic remain a mystery so let's take a look at the 2 leading theories the 1st theory is that the virus naturally jumped from an animal host to humans a v a mutation that's what caused these sars one pandemic in 2002 and the murders of 2012 the 2nd theory is that the virus escapes naturally through some sort of lab accident yet people are often called conspiracy theorists for entertaining the very real possibility that these sars kovi to virus may have accidentally leaks from the one lab now rather than being a health and science issue the pandemic has become political to the point that

doing an investigation into a possible lab leak has been widely dismissed as some sort of right wing zina phobic inquiry. jesse i want to make it very clear that there is currently no direct evidence to support either of these 2 dominant theories and that's why they're merely hypotheses at this point it's also important to note that there is no evidence that the virus was intentionally leaked so if the origins of the virus remain a mystery shouldn't we investigate all credible possibilities so we can understand pandemics how they start and how to prevent them salut lee we should investigate every lead that we have you know but the 1st thing and most important thing is stopping the pandemic before we worry about where it came from we need to get it under control and what i mean that's not just the united states of america the world must get the pandemic under control that should be the number one 1st

priority deal with the pandemic now and then worry about where it came from and how to avoid it again later you know it's interesting because. you know to me stopping the pandemic is more important than finding out necessarily where it originated from at this point in time now a lot of accidents have caused outbreaks in the past including in china that's why it's very important to have safeguards in place back in 2017 jesse on this show you and i discussed the problem of the u.s. lifting a federal funding ban on research into making lethal viruses more deadly since then researchers have been free to modify influenza sars and mers virus is to make them more deadly in the name of science and research one of the main concerns about lifting that ban back then was that a lab accident could cause a global pandemic jesse. well absolutely a lab accident can cause

a pandemic you know and were quick to blame china and china may be responsible i don't know that that's what will be be determined when they investigate but let's remember the united states isn't clean on things like this either anybody hear of lyme disease before yeah when i was doing conspiracy theory line busies which is prevalent all throughout the united states why is it called lyme disease because the 1st reported case was in line connecticut right across from plum island now what is plum island well it's the place they were going to send a hannibal lecter to in the movie silence 5 of the lambs where you could run on the beach and go swimming but it's also the plum island is a research center which was given over to a gentleman named eric trowel by a nazi during operation paperclip when we brought nazis to this country and his

expertise was creating biological weapons with wood with wood ticks and mosquitoes well was he successful obviously we have plum island we have lyme disease now all the responsibility of the united states government so we are not clean on producing epidemics either people are inflicted with lyme disease all over this country and it's a very real dastardly thing. we now turn to israel which has ramped up violence against palestinians during the muslim holy month of ramadan on monday israeli forces attacked the 3rd holiest site in islam the mosque in jerusalem wounding at least 163 palestinians hamas militants then responded with rockets and israel launched airstrikes into gaza in return killing at least 33 palestinians and wounding over 120 others on the israeli side at least 3 people have been killed and

56 others wounded the conflict has obviously been raging for decades but it's getting harder for the international community to stay silent because israel is a nuclear powered state with the military while palestinians are stateless and forced to live under israeli control with no rights the latest round of violence has been referred to as a real estate dispute by the israeli government which is trying to evoke palestinian families who have lived in eastern jerusalem since the 1950 s. under israeli law occupying jewish settlers can reclaim property that was under jewish ownership before 948 that's when israel declared itself an independent state in violently expelled palestinians in what many historians refer to as a campaign of ethnic cleansing in 1967 israel then an excuse jerusalem and the entire west bank but the international community has never recognized the occupied territories as belonging to israel. today the reality on the ground has been

condemned by human rights groups who accuse israel of committing crimes of apartheid against palestinians jesse despite the evidence the u.s. and its taxpayers reportedly provided the israeli government with over 3 $1000000000.00 in military aid every year with no conditions or accountability for human rights abuses well i'll tell you bruges 1st and foremost you're never going to get peace over there between israel and the. palestinians why it's simple you have 2 separate religions battling each other here and take that from me religion's aren't going to change their positions not for at least a 1000 years or more and you have this occupied territory the way it works is both religions want to troll of it and they won't allow the other one to be in control so as long as that religious thought prevails the wars are going to go

on and on and on and people are going to die and die and die now the question i would ask is this don't both of these religions don't they take val shalt not kill or killing as bad why are they allowed to kill each other and then claim to be religious and claim to follow religion if they're killing each other no religion advocates for killing and yet it shows you that government is more powerful in many ways than religion because religion allows you apparently to kill let be have stuff government no other time can you kill but you can if governments are involved and that's what you've got here you've got loose palestinians who are you know under kind of a government you've got israel which is a super powerful government and the war is going to go on and on and on you're

going to see it but your grandchildren are going to be talking about this war because with 2 religions fighting each other unless the religion is changed their positions which is highly unlikely the war will continue on into forever and ever amen. for our final story today a ransomware attack has forced the operators of the colonial pipeline network to temporarily shut down services leaving millions of americans without fuel a pipeline. carries roughly 3000000 barrels of fuel per day across a 5500 mile stretch from texas to new york 45 percent of the east coast jet fuel petrol and diesel are supplied by this pipeline the attack was reportedly carried out by an organized crime group called dark side which targeted poorly protected corporate data the shutdown has left hundreds of feel stations in the south east to dry or rationing supplies in georgia and tennessee and elsewhere

consumers have driven up costs by panic buying and by the end of today gas prices nationwide had increased to $2.99 per gallon heading toward the highest level since 2014 the colonial pipeline company has since started moving some operations back online and it aims to be fully up and running again by the end of the week but we'll see if that happens just see the cyberattack highlights the vulnerability of the u.s. infrastructure and our corporate networks. yes it sure does and the unfortunate thing here or fortunate depending on how you look at it is most of our companies are all run by the private sector they're not run by the government now there's the government oversee them i hope so then the government help them out in these cyber attacks we certainly hope so but in this country like this pipeline this is run by the private sector so when the private sector fails and goes down all the rest of us will bear the brunt of it and get ready because gas is going to you know we're

seeing shortages now because of this it all comes back to our dependency on the fossil fuel industry again i think president biden is correct in trying to move away from the fossil fuel industry but it will be a difficult task to do it will be long and it will be slow and i think you're going to see $5.00 gas at some point a gallon and you're going to see shortages all over like the way back in the seventy's we had. our 1st gas shortage in the seventy's and get this right when the vietnam war ended we had a shortage of fuel now how could that be we were using up tremendous amounts of fuel fighting the war in vietnam we stopped fighting the war and then there's a fuel shortage there should have been a glutton of fuel when we stopped fighting the war so it to me it's all manipulated and it's all part of a big work to make money in the end you know they they've got to protect themselves

from cyber attacks but they can also use it for excuse to jack up prices and to control the fossil fuel industry while the electric industry isn't necessarily going to be any better remember this winter in texas when they had that big freeze and electricity prices went up if you drove an electric vehicle you also wouldn't be able to power in that situation either yeah that's true but let's remember of that texas didn't follow the rest of the country and they didn't want to follow the regulations of the rest of the country texas was kind of a lone wolf and you saw the results of that this winter i still laughing when i hear about united states citizens running across the border to mexico to seek shelter unbelievable who'd ever thought they'd see that. it's time for a quick break when we return the governor sits down with professor richard wolfe to talk about the state of the u.s. economy during the pandemic we'll be right back. the world

halfway through the year now a new jobs report indicates that the economy isn't coming back as quickly as some experts have projected richard why do you think that is all i think we have been indulging a failure a failure to face how serious of the last 1618 months have been let me remind everyone that as we hold that the cold it is behind us as we hope that the economy comes back that we don't engage in wishful thinking of the most dangerous short here's a couple of things to keep in mind over the last 16 months 82000000 americans had to go and file for

unemployment insurance let me explain what that means some of the folks were only unemployed a few weeks all those were unemployed the entire time and everything in-between. what is $82000000.00 mead well the total labor force of the united states the total number of men and women that look for and hold the jobs that keep this economy growing is estimated at under 116000000 people if 82000000 had to file for unemployment it means that more than half of the labor force of this country was unemployed for a while and you know when you run employed all kinds of things happen we know that because we've been studying it for centuries here's some examples if you're unemployed you tend to use up whatever savings you might have accumulated when

you're on employed the stresses and strains on your family can often lead to mental and physical problems more than usual suicide spikes alcoholism spikes i mean i could go on but you get the picture we've just been through all of the extraordinary economic burden but as if that weren't enough and of course it was we also had the worst public health disaster in this country's history for the last century the last time we had anything like this was the virus a pandemic of 1918 which is over 100 years ago we've never had it at the same time a major question of our economic system and

a major public health disasters and so there really is no precedent for this and so that what we've had is you know millions of people have been on. able to pay their rents that's coming due millions haven't been able to keep up their mortgage payments people have used up their cushion or whatever they've socked away and i think what you're seeing now is the fact that it's going to take a long while before people get back we're not going to have the glorious recovery quick and easy as so many had foretold you know even though the labor department says the n.m. unemployment rate rose to over 6 percent there have been reports of job openings that aren't being filled is this happening all over the country or in just one particular industry. one of the victims over the last year was also small and

medium size businesses the the the cold it closed them the economic class closed them they lost business they lost money they didn't get profits they're in a really rough shape so now that they can begin to open again here's what they're trying to do on the one hand they want the workers to come back without having to pay them more wages but the workers also suffered last year they need more wages to offset the losses of the last year so you've got workers who need more and small and medium businesses who don't want to pay them more but they tend to say that because in our culture you're not allowed to say i want you to come back to work for me but i will while i offer you more wages so instead we hear

a lot of noise about a labor shortage there is no shortage we have at least 10 to 20000000 americans on in cloyd right now looking for work but they're not willing to come back to work under difficult conditions still scary safety concerns and no more money than they got before the worst of it businesses can survive by raising prices and you've got to get more wages or else you just form on . now what kind of unemployment benefits are people receiving due to covert 19 and when do these benefits exactly expire. we used to give people a little bit of extra in other words the normal unemployment they were eligible for was some plum ended by the federal government creating 2 or 3 programs that would give you under some circumstances 300 for a while it was $600.00

a week now it's back to $300.00 a week it's set to expire before the end of the year so it's a temporary boost then people go back to what they got before but nobody in their right mind what argue that the extra few $100.00 a week is adequate to the losses and difficulties we have faced as a people so the argument that we should take away the benefits that we've given them for coal that is really a pretty ugly bald effort to force people back to work by making the unemployment they're getting shallow inadequate that they literally have no choice it is in my judgment they're very un-american now do you think there's any truth to the idea that people don't want to go back to work because they're receiving got

enough money from unemployment our wages and benefits that bad for the average worker that unemployment would be better. i don't think so i think that is a make believe argument because you know that if you do take away a few $100.00 a week that will make life harder for people and so they will yes be more driven to go to work but it's not the cause of their not going to work the cause of their not going to work is easily seen in some concrete examples millions of americans who are parents cannot have the wife go to work the mother because this is no child care and the schools are either partly or completely closed what are you going to do with you're a parent you can't go to work the cause you haven't got at it quick child care

here's what you would could do to solve the problem have the government produced what most other countries already have which is a robust government supported daycare program if you took care of america's children you'd be freeing up their parents to do the work in the labor force that they want to do rather than portraying them as people who'd rather sit around use of unemployment benefits rather than work that is an insult it's dishonest and it is disrespectful to the real problems that are keeping people from going to work at wages that employers refused to raids. now most people have received 3 stimulus checks by now 2 thirds of the recipients claim the funds have been used to pay for groceries rant and other monthly bills have the checks done

enough there stimulate the economy when people are mainly using them to pay off debt no they're not and it's a really good question jessie that you asked let me explain it this way this morning the government released figures that surprised many economists that showed that between april of 2020 and april of 2021 the month just passed consumer prices rose by 4 percent let me explain what that means it means that for an average family in this country household i mean somewhere in the neighborhood of $56070000.00 in their. 4 percent increase in prices is the equivalent of losing $3000.00 worth of purchasing power because at the prices go up you can't buy as much with

a dollar as you used to be able to so an enormous portion of the extra money given to workers over the last coat that year has had to be used to pay higher prices which is why the american working class is still in a rear is on its rent in a rear is on its mortgages and using the little bit for groceries and to get by we still haven't faced how serious the crisis is and how much we have to do to get back there's no easy and cheap way to do that and pretending otherwise simply causes different americans to fight against each other rather than to solve the problem now what do you make of president biden's plans to ramp up infrastructure projects is he focusing on the right areas to create job growth.

well the answer is yes and no i mean i appreciate i want to be fair here i appreciate that president biden is recognizing what american engineering associations have been telling us for decades that we have neglected our infrastructure that unlike other countries we do not maintain our roads and bridges and all the rest of it the way we should ok that's correct he's doing now on the other hand look most of this money is going to go in big contracts between the government and major corporations they're going to take that money yeah they're going to do some work on the infrastructure but they're also going to pay out big salaries to their executives big dividends to their shareholders and that money is going to go back into the on equal economy we have and that's not going to solve our problems that's going to perpetuate our problems. well i'll tell you richard
