. all right, folks meet suppliers, oil pipelines in new york city transit system. they've all been recent victims of cyber attacks and regulators are warning that brokerage accounts are now at risk. so how will the united states respond? joining me now is todd shipley, cybersecurity expert, and president of dark intel. welcome sir, and let me, let me 1st start with the breaking news of the day, which took place about an hour ago. us and investigators, they've recovered about $2300000.00 in crypto currency, which was paid as a ransom to the cyber crime group responsible for the attack that shut down the colonial pipeline last month. this is according to the justice department, so they explain how significant this is and how they might have gone about doing it . well, it is significant in the fact that they are able to find where it went. and they obviously were tracing the cryptic currency from one place to another,

which is fairly perfunctory to do because bitcoin is an open block chain where every record is written. so you can track where it goes. so it went to someplace that they were able to serve legal process on and be able to get into that account and turn the count over to the government. so the bad guys made some mistakes because they didn't move their money fast enough and hide it from the government. well enough. well, let's hope a lot more of them make the same mistake. ok, well in addition to what i mentioned at the top in trowing you, you can add to the list of attacks that have occurred the one over the weekend that the disrupted servers for a martha's vineyard ferry on cape cod. but these are nothing these attacks compared to what can happen. so my questions to you are, what is your greatest realistic fear? and do you agree with that? be i direct chris, right when he says that ransomware and that threat is the threat comparable to 911? well, the 1st part,

what's my fear is this is gonna be an ongoing problem that doesn't get solved easily, because the issue becomes people's a, you know, inability does not click on something and their inability to not open that email or the attachment, an email that allows these bad guys in now as far as direct res, comment about this being the 911 of a cyber kind of thing. i disagree. totally. i mean, this is more like, you know, the death by a 1000 cuts analogy because this has been ongoing for some time. this isn't a one time attack. i mean, we've forgotten what happened to atlanta just a few years ago. and a number of a small agencies that have been attacked, hundreds of them over the past few years. so this is an ongoing problem. we have to look at how we're going to the legislature some control over how infrastructure protection is done in the cyberspace area. i want to jump ahead, keep, keep that, that question in there. but how did we get to this point? i mean, i used to talk about this on my radio show back in 2010, 2011,

and speak to some congress been talking about, you know, where we're looking into protecting the grid. i'm sure the grid might keep you up at night what they could do to the grid. god forbid, millions of people could die if they ever took down the power grid. so my question is, how did we get here? and realistically, how to, how do we get out of it? well, i mean that's, that's a good question. if we knew the answer, we'd solve it. but part of the problem is just like any, you know, kidnapping situation where we take the, the tact of not paying the ransom demand, we have to stop paying the ransom demand. these insurance companies that are paying these companies for back for the ransom are part of the problem. if you're going to pay for it, we don't solve anything. and so we have to start taking a harder look at how we get around some of these ransom attacks. and part of the technology issue, part of it is taking good. right now, i hate to interrupt, but i get it right. i do want to get this in though much has been made about the

fact that gina raymundo was asked on a b c 's this week yesterday. what the us response might be to those attacks that would be severe and would include a military response and our congress secretary said, all options are on the table, do you put much stock in a, in a possible military response to a cyber attack? well, if, if it's a nation state, certainly, but the problem is, these aren't nation states doing these things. these are organized criminals that live in countries that we don't have a good cooperation with. that's the problem. so we have to do some negotiation. we have to get some legal methods to get into these countries and we have to negotiate with these countries that we're not doing a good job with now and haven't for several administrations finding out where these people are and going after them from a legal perspective. and that's the only where we go. effort. well, you know, this is not going to be a military operation. we're, we're an attack somebody with

headlines can help it. think something like one of these rifles is intimidating. scary and deadly. but according to the specific research center, the majority of murderers are committed with hand guns. not long guns and gun owners would argue most to own firearms abide by the law and only want them as a means of personal protection. and as a last resort, one of the platinum in the case james miller of san diego says he applauded the judge and actually taking the time to physically see what a so called assault rifle. in fact, looks like. and that was very enlightening, and i don't believe that the department of justice, california attorneys were very happy that he actually took the time to see what a 15 actually looked like. and how it came apart after a gunman kills 5 children and stopped him back in 1089. the sale of more than 50 gun models were banned. but according to judge roger bernita of the us district court for the southern district of california, it's unconstitutional. and filled experiment, these firearms are semi automatic and work the same way as current legal guns do. they are not automatic machine gun current governor given new some opposed. the

about today. the justice department, both on the president trump and under president biden, for a while, worked with google to spy on the e mails of for new york times reporters. i want you to watch a r t correspond that john hardy. he's here with more and how the biden ministration is now trying to distance itself from these actions. it's still unclear why the department of justice was secretly investigating for new york times reporters. it likely had to do with stories the times published. now possibly the f b, i investigation into 2016 election meddling, whatever the case, the d o j. how to gag order on the times preventing it from reporting about the secret legal battle underway, but that gag order was lifted. and now the story is coming out. the times reports the trump administration and 2020, secretly seized months of the for reporters phone records from early 2017, and goes on to write that the d o j, under the biden administration, quote, continued waging the fight this year, telling

a handful of times executives about it, but imposing a gag order to shield it from public view. new york times executive editor deemed a cat set in a statement. the justice department relentlessly pursued the identity of sources for coverage that was clearly in the public interest. in the final, 15 days of the trump administration, and the biden administration continued to pursue it. as i said before, it profoundly undermines press freedom anthony collie, a. d. j spokesperson said the quote bite an air, a justice department voluntarily moved to withdraw the order before any records were produced. the department strongly values a free and independent press and as committed to upholding the 1st amendment. white house press secretary jens khaki said no, one of the white house was aware of the gag order until this past friday night. and president biden has sent on the record. he would not allow the d o j under his watch to seize the phone records or e mails of any reporter. so that raises the question about what president biden
