insight from the charity. ah, coming to you live from our world news headquarters in moscow. this is our international. i'm your host donald quarter. welcome to the program. now cuba president has lashed out at washington, accusing it of stirring up mass protests across the country. thousands have flooded the streets of the caribbean nation over an economic crisis exacerbated by the pandemic. and the answered anti government movements being called the largest in 30 years. the the, the the, the u. s, which has
12:02 pm
a decades old embargo against the island, said it fully backs the people's right to rally. the protests come after a uniquely tough year for cuba. the economy plunged 11 percent hurt by the coby crisis. and us sanctions. the country said the u. s. embargo cost is 9000000000 dollars last year alone, hurting its ability to fight the pandemic. america calls its own sanctions tools for democracy. while cuba, as president demand supporters go out and defend their country. of corresponding for our sister channel are spanish is in havana. i'm coming to town demonstrations in supported the cuban government being held around the country. when i'm you can see national flags, portraits of the historical leader of the cuban revolution. fidel castro, and slogans for him. and president miguel diaz can now make these demonstration some large other smaller like this one taking place. not only in havana,
12:03 pm
but in other parts of cuba. the protest appeared to have been organized on social media present. diaz canal appeared to the country on television. let's listen to an exit from his speech. say about i'm a little we are addressing revolutionaries who may have become entangled. addressing cubans who may have some concerns, but we will not allow the opponents of the revolution mercenaries who have sold out to the u. s. government sold out to the empire, receiving money from subversive agencies to provoke destabilization. and there will be a response from the revolutionaries. and therefore, we call upon all the revolutionaries of the country, all the communists to come out in the places where these provocations are being carried out today. and from now on the demo and noteworthy that american flags could be seen at some demonstrations against the government. many said this was proof of the involvement in the us in organizing such action many find it all the, even though the u. s. is blockading cuba. people are still waving american flags. despite this, the marches in supporting the government took place in different parts of the city
12:04 pm
. we spoke with several people who came out to defend the government and heard what they think about the protest. but for the lower level, of course improvements are needed. but we'll, we'll do it in a different way and we will not please the americans imperialist wants nothing good for us and it won't be better if they try and hear. that's a thursday. the lice, they won't get it, they will never get it. this is the 3 to fidel role and d. s. can now, since the started the pandemic cuba has suffered from a serious crisis not only in health care, but also in economics, a lack of food and an energy crisis due to a breakdown of some power plant. all of this, according to analyst, has provided fertile ground for the groups, the people organizing protests against the government. yeah. how to get more insight into what's going on in cuba. we go live now to dr. robert gucci. he's senior lecture at lancaster university's department of sociology. robert, thank you very much for joining us on the program. now the 1st question,
12:05 pm
i just want to discuss what effects do you think us sanctions are having on cuba? well, i think we've known this for a long time, the united states amount of treatment of cuba because it disagrees with its political stance, has been immense. we saw some of that change happen with brock obama, some sort of naturalization that then a relation that we then went back to a stalwart wall with, with donald trump. and it doesn't look like joe biden is going to loosen that relationship at all. i was in south florida in miami at the time when, when a lot of the, the relations were looking to be a bit better. and even their cubans living in south florida, where we're looking to go back to the island to just invest into a capitalistic hotel chain again. so it's very complex relationship the united states has with cuba, but certainly is down to the treatment that the us government puts on on the island
12:06 pm
. let's talk a little bit about what's behind what looks like, you know, spontaneous protests that have her up in cuba. i mean, we've seen people in the u. s. say that it's the result of bad cuban government decisions. the cuban government, you know, pointed that forces in the united states, what do you think is behind did this outbreak of rallies? well, honestly, it's probably a bit of both, but, but i think what's, what's fascinating about this is the opening of the internet and social media and the communication that people can have with one another, both within cuban and outside through advanced internet technologies has really changed the way that people are communicating and, and i think complicating again who is actually doing the communication. certainly it's not outside of past experience of us involvement in stirring up some of these
12:07 pm
some of these activities that then become a bit of spectacle. but i also think we shouldn't just sit back and think that this is the united states having people doing it, it's bidding for them. so there are some real challenges there. but as one of the above being interviewed said, we're going to address those challenges and we're going to address them a bit differently. and i think that that's what cuban folk are asking for and have been asking for the ability, the agency that they have to address social, economic, and cultural differences between the united states and cuba in the ways that they wished to. and that's never really tasted nice to the us government. well, let's talk a little bit about joe, us present joe biden's earlier promise to reverse what he called. you know, the trump administration's harsh policies on her vantage. would you say that this, this event was marking a, basically a breaking of this promise? well, i think, you know, joe biden likes to surround himself with
12:08 pm
a lot of advisors. i mean that we've, we've seen reporting on this, we've seen a lot of analysis on the weather in the white house. we've seen that he takes time to think about things. and this isn't one of those moments where he needs to surround himself with all these different voices. he needs to stand and actually talk about human rights. not just talk about the embargo in its benefit for the united states. and it is some sort of move to democratize, but look at what the effects united states, the end it's embargo, and it's treatment has. will this actually move in a certain direction? i think it depends on how the american public look at this, beyond just 3 or 4 spots throughout the united states with large cuban populations or populations who are interested in interested in that. so this comes down to average american actually becoming aware of what their government is doing to cuba has been doing for decades now. dr. robert good shape of lancaster university.
12:09 pm
thank you very much for joining us on the program. thanks, reviving the spirit of neo nazis segregation in europe. that's how russia slammed calls by frances europe minister for states to use to not use vaccines developed in russia and china. we can do france, profess discriminatory statements by its high ranking representative. was you via the spirit of neo nazi segregation in europe. it is not for the french foreign ministry to dictate a country and people were jeff they should be vaccinated with obviously the french foreign ministry. curtain as the country has not been able to develop its own vaccine. we sympathize with francis failure. the vast majority of european countries recognize only these 4 vaccines as the front, and only 3 countries are differently. i regret the grease does this. the ministers regret referred to athens letting in tourists to have had russian or chinese shots

results, and requires a covey test for entry. but it's far from the only european country to green light mosque, outspoken agreed, in addition to the likes of hungry and slovakia. san marino has been using it for months and now has almost 0 new cases. the lancet medical journal recently published a study on elderly people there, which showed a few side effects and those who got shot. there were also no safety concerns or fatalities reported. greek, politicians said discriminating against russia jab makes no sense. i think that we should avoid the daily cost any kind of vaccine, the national vaccine, the must see the as a public who and the global and in my understanding, the biggest challenge is how to vaccine or see this is there. we're not always, you know, just seem to be on campus where we can afford to have, i don't own vaccine and faithful that vaccination to the people in africa. the

people in india. exactly. because of the panoramic is low, but we will never be safe if only as the seasons of the let's see that better off county will be getting into the rest will be left to the pending. i must stress that, let's say that greece was to accept the french position. that would be, that would be a little bit ridiculous from the point of view of that hunger. marian's or having sputnik vaccinations. so we would allow on gary and was put nic vaccination coming into greece. free preview without any, without any other tests and discriminating on russians. coming in from moscow, we put the with put nic vaccination, which does make sense. reporters have broken into the georgian parliament building to protest the killing of
12:12 pm
a camera man by anti gay activists. the journalists are reported to have seized the parliamentary speaker seat and they demanded to talk to the law makers and the resignation of the government. we could go writers protested a pro l g. b t. mark scheduled by activists. camera man was found dead after being beaten during the classes. the news the to get some, some perspective into this incident. we go live now to independent journalists, martin summers. martin, thanks a lot for joining us. the reporters are clearly outraged. could this whole issue become a national flash point? do you think? well, obviously it's,
12:13 pm
it's very hard to understand what underlying all of this is clearly some tensions around the gay rights gender as it were. but of course, george years in a very strategic place. the war in 2008, when the shock is really was the president at the time, try to reach the breakaway republic, so cause yourself to set the tone for future relations between russia and nato in the western coast. georgia as a potential member of nate. so this is a worry in moscow. and so the kind of social tensions around cultural issues which, which is clearly underlying this has to be said in the context of great power rivalry . and potentially manipulation of internal conflict. classlent forces, while levin is liter recently said that imposing imaginary values could break the
12:14 pm
european union, actually, would you say that georgia could be reconsidering the wisdom of wanting to join the block? well, i think the whole issue of gay rights has become the kind of challenge for pro western politicians. obviously in western europe where it's very well developed debate. and of course, it has to be more conservative societies to the east, whatever the orientation, whether towards go all towards the west. these debates are much more controversial and potentially de stabilizing. i mean, in any case, you know, we shouldn't really, how people, journalist, i mean, the journalist was not suggested that he was a guy, he was just covering the, the meeting. so the journalist being killed during that job is, is never really going to create some kind of reaction amongst journalists. but of
12:15 pm
course, the government current government is accused, the issue of protesting is being manipulated by the west. the maybe some mileage is not. i'm not saying isn't the trace, but obviously most people need to show there is civic discipline and willingness to to dialogue in order to prevent instability, which could be bad, bad for everybody. well, as you just mentioned, i mean obviously there's an overall difference in values and a lot of places between east and west. but would you say there's any way for the country to bring together pro and anti l g. b t groups so viciously opposed to each other. well, i think people have got to accept that people got different views about these things and you called abolish sexuality by, by passing any laws if people are that way into and then they got to be that way, inclined, and they won't be able to exercise their right to the sexuality. but on the other
12:16 pm
hand, there are legitimate concerns that all of these issues are used. a weaponized in the struggle between nato and the, and the, you know, nice some countries from sure line with moscow. and you know, it's a more in mind we should take the heat to d. scott combs but confrontations. everybody's entitled to their views and we certainly shouldn't be murdering journalist, whomever. we'll independent journalist martin summers. thanks a lot for joining us on our international. thank you. our hidden hunger pandemic could turn out to be worse than anything cove it has dealt the world that's that's according to a warning from oxfam. some it says, 11 people are dying of starvation globally every minute. while 155000000 people are apparently facing crisis levels of food insecurity, charity has also published a series of horowitz,
12:17 pm
1st hand accounts of women struggling to feed their children. i can secure a good quality 14 for my children. therefore, i feel guilty and i feel that no matter how much i'm trying, i still need to do more. i had to look for solutions. i can go hungry, but the boy cannot. i even dared. i dared allure to go back for food because i couldn't into your hunger. it hurts me. i'm out of ideas on what to do with children. i'm not eating properly. and i sometimes feel like i'm not raising them boil enough. most of the time, we have little to nothing treat. i struggle to get my children to sleep at night. they ask for food and i tried to distract them, telling them stories until they're asleep. then i look at them and pray for a better life until i get stolen by sleep. oxfam listed climate change armed conflicts and the economic impact of the corona virus pandemic. as the driving forces behind the crisis would locked downs and the closure of borders and businesses only making matters worse for those already disadvantaged. but the head

of humanitarian policy at oxfam, matthew trust, god told us there are other factors as well. we have to understand what from actually means to pete lama. god, i mean it's extraordinarily serious with knowing that hunger figures were increasing. we predicted last year that the tension going to get was a see how about it's got net. thank yes, this is jen shocking. we have to make sure that people are able to get vaccine. so it's not just going to the rich countries because we have to also restart the economies and put a country for me. there are 3 key things we have 3 immediately. firstly, on these files and piece the 2nd is we have to stop worrying policies from blocking the monetary and 8. we cannot have a situation where parties is using hunger as a weapon of war. and finally, of course, funding funding is crucial. it will get people to help they need, and i think we also need to look at the kind of safety net that some of the richer countries have with the poor countries turned off the world's population have no access to social security, no safety net. so when they see a shock like this, there's just no way to recover from overcoming the crisis through vaccination is
12:19 pm
also an issue. as the un secretary general warns about the gap between developed and developing nations and access to vaccines, oxfam health policy, advisor and mary. it's told our team is going underground, that vaccine nationalism is also a major problem. you know, we need another 1000000000 dice. and the g 7 off adult actually less than a 1000000000 in donations with no urgency in terms of when they say nations are going to be made. and the reality is that donations are picking up the bass and we need it now because we are seeing the brakes rising from the country, but they're not going to fix this crisis to be back. we actually need the g 7 countries to box the listing of the patients on the fact that the science a know how can be shed throughout the world. we can get more qualified manufacturers making them run production. that's the only way that we're going to

get back to back to make everybody and this we haven't seen an extreme back being in the quality, but not only putting lives at risk in many of the poor countries in the world, but is actually continuing to be a threat for all of the fighting is intensifying and f dana stand. has the taliban makes major territorial gains? officials say that over the weekend, local security forces repelled an assault by the group on a northern key. northern province with its in its border with to just in the pentagon says it's watching developments with concern as us troops continue their work. rapid withdrawl from the country. the escalating situation is dragging the nation further into a humanitarian crisis with coal calling on europe to suspend deportations of afghan migrants for 3 months. meanwhile, and f dana stan itself 1000, had been forced to flee the taliban offences. village were surrounded by the

an explosion in the capital of mogadishu, reportedly killed 9, an injured and 8 others. it was the 2nd major blast and the city this month. and the also bob extremist group claimed responsibility with more on whether a cement somalian scenario could now be repeated in afghanistan. here's where i'd gas to malia wasn't a libya or a rock. it wasn't a prosperous nation, that the us invaded and left a wreck. it was a poor country to begin with, made that much poor by far and help in the form of bombs and weapons. no somalia is much more like a gun. it's done with insurgency. sure, bob, running much of the country. the the

don't underestimate the, they're smart, that tough and they're motivated. as bob, according to the b, b, c, collect almost as much in taxes as the government, even government officials pay. i shall bob to be left alone. years and years of us as strikes and grades have failed to stop them. so why not try again? the united states has been involved in somalia for decades. and it is very involved in africa for longer than that. this is a product of the poor planning in the pentagon. this is the product of the factional, little within the pentagon. it's no secret that at the highest levels of us war planning, that there are different political tendencies. there are different political factions. and so one day,
12:24 pm
one faction will have the upper hand. and the next day, another fax will have the upper hand. and you see that being played out in east africa, where we were told the states was pulling out of that part of the world. and now it appears there on the way back after 3 decades of unsuccessfully and painfully beating its head against the very solid somalian war. the united states is apparently considering another round. last year you may remember truck pulled most jewish troops out of somalia while there potentially going back in the u. s. sending troops back to somalia. are you putting more forces in the hell? how precisely is the us going to be changing its security posture on the continent? carla, i think you can understand why we wouldn't necessarily detail, but the true movements are forced presence in advance, particularly when we're talking about a counterterrorism threat. there's really no denying that our repositioning,
12:25 pm
fairly sudden repositioning out of somalia. earlier this year has introduce new layers of risk and complexity to our mission there. many people claim that the u. s. last and have gotten a thought. i would disagree. they went into kiera, l cod and they leave with a written promise from the taliban. never to let the setup shopping of gas on again . so they failed. but the whole nation building thing, but i'll car is gone. somalia is very different in somalia, the warlords, that rule, much of the country, the actual bob, their sworn while carter us has tried everything. they've tried training. somalian still fight. i shall. bob, they've tried bombing the militants, they've paid the others to bone. the insurgents sponsored invasions by countries that neighbor samaria, nothing's work. how many decades will the us leave at this time before? come?
