were cancelled worldwide with some 1000 of those involving the united states. that's nothing compared to the $6000.00 interrupted flights on christmas eve. and yesterday, combine with 1200 cancellations and over 5000 delays here in the united states. so joining us to talk about this and more is jamie finch, former director at the national transportation safety board. i hope you had a great holiday, jamie welcome. you know, some airlines are claiming that these delays are due to weather. but is it fair to say it's the virus? and if so, how is the coven screwed this up? what, what, what, what part of cove it has caused all these cancellations? well, i think you easily say that this has been a perfect storm of everything coming together at once. there was some weather, especially in the upper northwest pacific northwest that really did it, in fact,

alaska airlines and some of those airlines flying in that region. but obviously koby has had a huge impact on this, not just with the airlines and the flight crews themselves, but also with those people on the ground. so talk about that a little bit so. so for the, how much 1st of all, i remember back i'm maybe a month ago or so when these vaccine mandates came down for pilots and crew, there was certain airlines more than others that canceled lots of flights. so i how much have the mandates contributed? do you believe to not enough crew being available maybe as opposed to you know, the virus itself and positive tests? i don't think that the mandates have been a negative impact on, on this cause some of this, i think that what we have is a virus that has a lot of breakthrough with the people that actually had the vaccines. my father would just, i mean he, which is diagnosed last week, and he had already been actually with the 1st 2 vaccines. and the day before he was, he was diagnosed as positive for cove. it, he had gotten the booster. so, i mean,

a lot of these things are breaking through. that's what's happening. even though they've mandated these with the pilots have been cru the, the virus is still breaking through. and these people are still getting sick now, which is obviously a much milder case. but nonetheless, it is still covered. you know, it's not stopping people from traveling though. everything i read says the t s a is screen. you know, just as many people now, maybe a little more, maybe a little less i forget than they did back in 2019, during the holiday season. so people are afraid they're, they're willing to take the risk. right. i mean, people are worth, it looks like they've been pent up for the last 2 years. they basically miss christ christmas last year. and now they were just like, you know, we're going to go in there just kind of determined in pushing on through. but the fact. 2 still remains that the flight crews are, are still sick in there of, you know, there, but there's been a shorthand, there. now the flight, the flight. the airlines have also been positioning planes and,

and doing things to make sure that, that they are, that they can have the people in the right, the equipment and everything else and the right place. but there's only just so much you can do and, and there's, this is where we are. and it's just, it's one of those things. you know, i had to say this, but i mean, this is one of those things that we're all just gonna have to be patient. we're going to have to work through the us. we're all in this together like it or not. so we just got to be patient, but as we worked through this but it things are getting better. well that leads to my next question. how about a week from now? do you think god was still going to see these cancellations and, and, and people being stranded or, or right after new years, it'll be much different than it is now. right after chris. yes, it will be much better with what you're seeing right now is obviously the big rush of, of, of the people together. and the being exposed will also be getting past those, those times where the flight crews are having their, their, their mandated a quarantine. the they've already asked the cdc to lower that from 10 days to 5. 1

days and some of the unions were protesting against that, but quite frankly, that's the same thing that has been allowed by cdc for, for a emergency responders, healthcare workers, rob and others around the country that are your central. well let's, let's talk about masks at a senate hearing last week. you had the outgoing southwest airlines ceo saying that wearing mass someplace doesn't really do anything. he touted the air filtration system on, on the plains as being more than sufficient to deal with cove. it, he got back up from the outgoing american airline, c. e o, who agreed with them. but of course the doctor found, not surprisingly, was a bit outraged. at such talk. he said, you should never take a mass on a plane. and by the way, you may never have to, you may never ever fly again without a mass. so where are you on this? what do you think? well, you know, the mask can provide a, a bit of protection to a certain degree on some of the, the larger droplets. obviously,

the smaller droplets may still get through. i think it's a matter of personal safety. i personally would, would, would what, where my mask on a plane where especially when you're in, i can find space like like an aircraft. now i will say what he said about the air for filtration system is very true. they are very, very good and they have hipaa filters on them too. so the entire airplanes, the air within the plane itself is, is completely recycled every 2 to 3 minutes. so you have very clean air there, but you don't ever know what that person next you've got or right, well, right there being. and so you just in, they may not know either. so it's not like it's something very so somebody, they're doing wrong. you know? so just as a precaution, i think it's smarter to keep it on. but also does talk about is one of the people that's promoting the idea of having to be actually ready to get on a plane. and i don't know. i know he, he, well, to me he makes it up as he goes along to say relevant and then that the next time,

we're tired of staying home. right. so does this embolden or should i say maybe raise expectations for other movies that are, that are coming out and will, will, will these movie makers that will be saying, well, as spiderman could do it, you know, we could do it and if they don't, they'll be severely disappointed or is this is this unique it is never easy to make a $1000000000.00. certainly. not even a 1000000000 but at least go back to where it was. yeah. sure, sure, exactly. i think i think you have a few things that work here. what we've seen, and we've talked about previous the last couple years is how the streaming services have grown. so you have movies like the, you know, the new matrix coming out. and, you know, they say it's disappointing in the box office. now we don't know what the actual numbers are when it comes to h, b o max, where it's streaming. so if you're a subscriber h b o max, maybe you watch matrix this weekend or, you know, watched it for free, right? and so you don't really it to be difficult to know when it comes to the streaming

side of things. what's a huge success? something like spider man. they didn't release it on disney plus, so you can't hide the numbers anymore. now it's just out there. and if it makes you know, a quarter or 2000000000 in the u. s, then it's clear there's a market and appetite. if people were watching at home, you might not have known as readily, you know, what the numbers will look like. so we're in this new phase now going forward, where you do have most movies coming across platforms on streamers, as well as in theaters. so i don't know that the expectations are always going to be the same, whereas something like this, they are, they must have felt very confident. they were dr. be honest. the theater, obviously it, it show you know, performed excellent in an excellent way. right? it just shows the yes, the appetite is there, the audience is there. you know, we are not, we have not lost box office. it grows as a barometer and you know, it's not going very, very, very encouraging. and let's turn to the economy. overall. we have retail sales up over 8 percent, 8.5 to be exact. the report out now from for the holiday season. online sales were

up 11 percent in store of 8 point one percent between november 1st and christmas eve. according to the mastercard spending pulse study. so this increased, which was the strongest in 17 years. again. do you believe this goes beyond the movie theaters in the movies and maybe were, you know, were recovering as an economy? you know, we can, we can hope so. you know, there's, there's a couple of things you have to, you have to factor. you have to wonder, you know, if people weren't spending, let's say, especially last year, you know, how much did that then get applied into what they felt comfortable spending. you know, this is holiday season. certainly, we've seen the economy being pumped with very, you know, the, the trillions of dollars had been spent by the federal government, quantitative easing and all this. so how much of this is really actually, you know, id say earned, you know, coming from people's pockets as far as earned melt? well, how much of this is just, you know, applied from debt from credit cards and things like this. i don't know how to analyze that, but i do feel again that there's a,
