6:30 am
that's nothing compared to the 6000 interrupted life on christmas eve and yesterday combine with 1200 cancellations and over 5000 delays here in the united states. so joining us to talk about this and more is jamie finch, former director at the national transportation safety board. i hope you had a great holiday, jamie welcome. you know, some airlines are claiming that these delays are due to weather. but is it fair to say it's the virus? and if so, how is the coven screwed this up? what, what, what, what part of cove it has caused all these cancellations? well, i think you easily say that this has been a perfect storm of everything coming together at once. there was some weather, especially in the upper northwest pacific northwest that really didn't impact alaska airlines and some of those airlines flying in that region. but obviously cove, it has had a huge impact on this, not just with the airlines and the flight crews themselves,
6:31 am
but also with those people on the ground. so talk about that a little bit so. so for the how much 1st of all, i remember back i'm maybe a month ago or so when these vaccine mandates came down for pilots and crew, there was certain airlines more than others that cancel lots of flights. so how much have the mandates contributed? do you believe to not enough crew being available maybe as opposed to you know, the virus itself and positive tests? i don't think that the mandates have been a negative impact on, on this cause some of this, i think that what we have is a virus that has a lot of breakthrough with the people that actually had the vaccines. my father would just, i mean he was diagnosed last week and he had already been actually with the 1st 2 vaccines. and the day before he was, he was diagnosed as positive for cove. it, he had gotten a booster. so, i mean, a lot of these things are breaking through and that's what's happening. even though they've mandated these are the pilots have been cru the,
6:32 am
the virus is still breaking through. and these people are still getting sick now, which is obviously a much milder case. but nonetheless, it is still covered. you know, it's not stopping people from traveling though. everything i read says the t. s a, a screen. you know, just as many people now, maybe a little more, maybe a little less i forget than they did back in 2019, during the holiday season. so people are afraid they're, they're willing to take the risk. right. i mean people are, we're getting the site, they've been pent up for the last 2 years. they basically miss crass christmas last year. and now they were just like, well you know, we're going to go in there just kind of determined in pushing on through. but the fact. 2 still remains that the flight crews are, are still sick in there. of, you know, there's been a shorthand there. now the flight, the flight. the airlines have also been positioning planes and, and doing things to make sure that, that they are, they can have the people in the right,
6:33 am
the equipment and everything else and the right place. but there's only just so much you can do and, and there's, this is where we are. it's just, it's one of those things. you know, i had to say this, but i mean, it's one of those things that we're all just gonna have to be patient. we're going to have to work through the us. we're all in this together like it or not. so we just got to be patient, but as we worked through this, but it things are getting better. well, that leads to my next question. how about a week from now? do you think god was still going to see these cancellations and, and, and people being stranded or, or right after new years it'll be much different than it is now. right after chris . yes, it will be much better than what you're seeing right now is obviously the big rush of, of, of the people together and being exposed. we'll also be getting past those, those times where the flight crews are having their, their, their mandated a quarantine. the they've already asked the cdc to lower that from 10 days to 5. 1 days and some of the unions were protesting against that be quite frankly,
6:34 am
that's the same thing that has been allowed by cdc for, for emergency responders, healthcare workers, rob and others around the country that are your central. well let's, let's talk about masks at a senate hearing last week. you had the outgoing southwest airlines ceo saying that wearing mass someplace doesn't really do anything. he counted the air filtration system on, on the plains as being more than sufficient to deal with cove. it, he got back up from the outgoing american airline, c. e o, who agreed with them. but of course the doctor found, not surprisingly, was a bit outraged. at such talk. he said, you should never take a mask off on a plane. and by the way, you may never have to, you may never ever fly again without a mass. so where are you on this? what do you think? well, you know, the mask can provide a, a bit of protection to a certain degree on some of the, the larger droplets. obviously, the smaller droplets may still get through. i think it's a matter of personal safety. i personally would, would, would what,
6:35 am
where my mask on a plane where especially when you're in, i can find space like, like an aircraft. now i will say what he said about the air for the filtration system is very true. they are very, very good and they have hipaa filters on them too. so the entire airplanes, the air within the plane itself is, is completely recycled every 2 to 3 minutes. so you have very clean air there, but you don't ever know what that person next you've got or right, well, right there being. and so you just in, they may not know either. so it's not like it's something very so somebody, they're doing wrong. you know? so just as a precaution, i think it's smarter to keep it on, but also does dr. valgy is one of the people that's promoting the idea of having to be actually to get on a plane. and i don't know. i know he, he, well, to me he makes it up as he goes along to stay relevant and then charges at the next time. but i think a lot of that shows me, i think a lot of thank you so much. thank you so much for filling us in on what's going on
6:36 am
and giving us a positive outlook for next week. thank you. thank you. all right, folks with the i'm a con variant, wreaking havoc in so many ways that you really come as no surprise at the approval ratings about joe biden. and kama le harris are at or near record lows, but it's more than just the pandemic that's responsible for fueling those numbers or, or is it? well, joining me to talk about this is the political panel. we have robert patillo, a radio talk show hosts in civil rights attorney and steve gill, who is a former u. s. t r official under bush and clinton gentlemen welcome. i hope you both had a very merry christmas. it's gotten so bad for biden, that this happened on a christmas eve call with parents and kids as they tracked santa through nor add watch. yeah, i hope you guys have a wonderful christmas as well. and let's go branded jo,
6:37 am
brand and i oh my, i mean steve, that, that was just so real unreal. however you want to describe it. well again, i think it just shows that the president, by new is totally out of the loop of what's happening, both economically, what's happening internationally, and even what's happening in kind of the cultural le icons of the, the whole f j b. let's go branded movement. it is, it is a serious problem when the leader of the free world is totally incoherent, incapable of understanding the most simple economic or other issues. and i think that was just kind of it summed it up in a nutshell. yeah, robert does by not know. let's go brandon means f joe biden, or does he not know that it's been chanted sporting events in around the country and around the world? is he that much in the dark? no, he doesn't. in 95 percent of americans don't know either is so lame,
6:38 am
it's so dumb. so juvenile, this is what happened. we have a political party that has absolutely nothing to offer. as far as policy goes, you can't even have a christmas celebration with children without some them compute tried to insult we proceed the united states. so joe biden were small at the appropriate way, which will order dismissal of something does this don't? this is the equivalent of when cafe was a thing on the political left, or when people made a big deal about donald trump, lead to scoop of ice cream. nobody chairs go to the grocery store and talks with just a random person line. and to think that would be held, let's go, brandon means, i think this is just how insular insecure to conservative movement become that i think this isn't kelsey a bell. live hoop to prove the of the lack of connection to bite and handled. some friends group, the american paul. oh really? wow. wow. just so you know, this father who says he's getting very bad phone calls. i is not please says he's not politically affiliated. he said that he's a, you know, he just want to express some displeasure with biden, which, by the way,
6:39 am
so he person from children the there he didn't curse in front of children and say, he didn't say anything. i also the children knew it met app. joe biden, but joe biden didn't know it, but killed by, he was making these gay with arson from the children on christmas. great job for christian. nobody coerced. nobody curse. he said something. that means something right. let's, let's move on. we talk about co bid and coven deaths, and one thing we hardly ever hear about in the media is how many are dying from fentanyl? the overdose is there now, according to a piece in the daily wire. for a may 2020 to may 2021. over 800000 americans died of drug overdoses. the 1st time, more than a 100000 people died in such a way by comparison, there were about half as many overdose deaths in 2016 much of the increases driven by the stream of fentanyl flooding this country from the southern border. so steve, this is a disaster and the american public, although most may not know about it,
6:40 am
there are hundreds of thousands dead that means families, friends who know about it. well, we've had about 7 tons of fentanyl get caught coming across the southern border. there's completely wide open to, to the cartels, to, to terrorist everything else, 7 tons of fentanyl. and that's just what we've caught. that's enough to kill every man, woman and child in america. and yet we have the border wide open as more is coming in every day. because we're not shutting down the board, not only to the illegal aliens that are coming in by the way, 600000, according to the border patrol. have come across the border and vaccinated and then distributed by the, by the administration all over the country. you want to know where the on con, spread is coming is because we're bringing it in from the south in the bind administration is flying them all over the country. i robert, this administration, ignore the responsibilities at the southern border. i mean, it seems that they do when it comes to this issue,
6:41 am
and coven positive illegals crossing into the country. they do not thing. yes, february 2020. the february 2021 was the trumpet ministration. i think of my math is correct. and 2016, that was the end of the obama administration. so i think that kind of lies directly . the numbers were citing lie directly on the trumpet, ministration list. you think joe biden has a time machine where he go back to before he was present to address those issue? i don't think we have issues at this of them. we're do think we have to have a comprehensive immigration control plan where we can actually have normalize relations. i think by the, by the most recent duly correct thing and try to insure too many people coming across the border or all that they did as possible. but i do think we have that would be start working cross party lines, creating an actual solution. i was seeing no movement from republicans in the senate when it comes to this issue of having a comprehensive plan. i do think both parties have to come together to actually create a plan of action. so we can address these issues going forward because doesn't benefit anybody to have non normalized relation to force on the border. well,
6:42 am
i got, i got a start hockey, the comma harris would actually do something since you've been at dallas, mcguire, texas, manga. she's not even able to talk to, emma cra, here it is. get you in on a to foreign countries, given money to countries like guatemala and others, are money that's going to solve it. believe steve, you're going to get no quarrel out of me with that at the forever. the most powerful caribbean american woman in the history of the free world is the vice president right now of jamaican descent and being of haitian to sentencing to way to haitian migrants retreat at the borders. you get no quarrel of me. of things been deplorable. the absence of this administration wouldn't comes to actually normalizing relations. i think even katrina john here who's in asian american woman who's in the us tomorrow. harris's inner circle, they've been nothing to normalize a normal what's going on at the border and think this goes into why those approval ratings are so low because they have been nothing about the 8. well, the policy set for the aid, 1000000 american voted for, and this is why you're seeing the flounder and flail, instead of having
6:43 am
a clear straight for misses on what they're going to do and what they have done. all right, like let's move over to comma le harris who recently had an approval in the high twenty's. she just doesn't seem to be very bright or able to answer a question with any substance or grabbing to us yesterday on c b s. she was asked about the one national security threat that keeps her up at night worrying. what do you see is the biggest national security challenge confronting the us? what is the thing that worries you and keeps you up at night? frankly, one of them is our democracy and we are embarking on a new era where the threats to our nation take many forms, including the threat of a toxicities taking over and having outsized influence around the world. all right, later in the interview, she clarified her comment. you just are saying there's a need to fight for the integrity of our democracy. see 30 seconds each. what's
6:44 am
wrong with her? i think she's clueless and that's probably the kindest thing you can say about her . the threat to democracy is this autocratic administration that wants to govern by executive order, rather than listening to the will of the american people. and that's why you have almost 30 democrats in congress. hit the exits because they know what is coming next november. all right, robert. i think she could take it later herself better, but i do think is very clear throughout history. they want a nation to store that cell from the inside out. it does not recover. we can fight to training who can fight the cream, who can fight the iranians. we have to be united here as americans. what you meant by the tax on democracy. all right, well i'm glad you're here to help her explain what she meant and that seems to be the case every time she answers a question. thank you guys, appreciate it. have a great day. happy healthy baby. i said you too. all right, nasa is working on a project where reality needs science fiction coming up the out of this world
6:45 am
technique that could save planet earth one day don't go away. i became a test bed for medical and then later recreational marijuana and it started with something. so innocent, i was wanting to socialize, everybody does it? so i cannot, and then it just keeps going and going and going. i'm just going to do it once. yeah. and then it's, oh, i'm just going to try this once and then we never do it again. because they want my phone, customers want to know i'm right on inside. okay. and you surround yourself with people who are encouraging you to do it and not to stop. oh, it felt like my life was over. jump office about the balcony and died. mm. you just couldn't stop for christmas. the traditional yuletide on a day this year,
6:46 am
making this traditional with a special christmas guide. me christmas tolerance diversity guide. we all know that christmas is a family holiday. so make sure all your parents are properly number. mm hm. this year, follow the agenda that make us no woman instead of snowman, or even better that this new person decide for themselves. ah, oh, now gifts, no don't so teddy bears prepare your children for the brave new world. and remember, diversity is not a t i o is no longer an appropriate cost. you this is appropriation
6:47 am
0 a logical appropriation offensive to the dear community. mm hm. and obviously sandra has to be cancelled. i because he is a wisest gender male who amuses mrs. claus discriminates against children based on behavior, whereas red, which is a communist color, makes children sit on his lap, makes people destroy trees and exploit sales. so sorry kid center is not coming to town anymore. i follow these instructions. stick to the spirit of christmas. you decide oh ah
6:48 am
oh, that were the 1st time in history. nasa will test an asteroid deflection technique . no, it's not spider man. we'll get to that in a minute. it's good to protect earth or could from being wiped out by knocking the rock off course. it's a story where science fiction meets reality. in ortiz, john hoodie has more it's what we call a global killer. we in mankind, robinson wright, glass russel freeze from nuclear. where you may remember the movie armageddon by director michael bay, about an asteroid hurdling towards earth, about to wipe out humanity. fortunately, we're not in any danger of that happening any time soon. according to scientists, at least none in the next century or so. but nasa isn't taking any chances. the
6:49 am
space agency has developed a $1200.00 pound spacecraft designed to slam head on into an asteroid at 15000 miles per hour to try and basically throw it off course called dark or double asteroid redirection test. it's part of a $330000000.00 effort aimed at finding out if the earth can be saved from extinction by big space rocks and he chang, head of the dark team, explains dark spacecraft has to hit the asteroid. then dart has to measure the amount of deflection and then we want to understand why that deflection came about how it works. so that's all about measuring the momentum transfer. how much momentum do we put into the asteroid by hitting it with the dark spacecraft? by understanding this chain says that one day, if a killer asteroid is discovered to be on a collision course with earth, scientists,
6:50 am
assuming they can determine the size and speed of it. well then have an idea how much momentum will be needed to make the asked it miss the earth, just so bruce willis and his rag tag, but lovable aerospace may not be needed after all the blow it up with a nuclear bomb. the me up, scotty. nasa says this is the best idea thus far for protecting mirrors in the quiver of all potential saving mechanisms. and we're trying to put some arrows there. and this is, i think the most potent one that we could think of right now. the plan as of now is to send the dark spacecraft head on into di morphis. it's an asteroid, 525 feet across that orbit, so much larger asteroid called dumas. now, nasa says the collision will occur about 6800000 miles from earth. and while both asteroids are classified as potentially hazardous in our solar system, scientists say they're not in any danger of hitting earth before or after. the collision takes place. for new views, john, honey,
6:51 am
i feel safer already. well, folks, it seems pretty obvious why since the covert pandemic, people had been staying away from movie theaters. of course, they were closed for a long while, but they have been open for several months in most places. and hollywood has finally come up with a post cobit blockbuster. and joining us to talk about it and the latest retail numbers as well as sean stone, filmmaker and author, shawn. great to see. you have a great holiday. welcome aboard. thank you. it's going to see you too. ok. so let's talk about spider man. no way home that's it's vitamin no way home. it's the 1st film to make a $1000000000.00 since 2001, 900. since before the pandemic, it took only 12 days, only 200-1900 of vendors, end game and avengers infinity war reached that market last time. what's the appeal? and are you shocked a little bit that it happened in this, you know,
6:52 am
ongoing pandemic? yeah, no i, i can't see that i'm, i'm surprised just to correct a little bit. the chinese film that i discussed a few months back. there was a summer blockbuster from china and it was made almost a $1000000000.00 of the korean war film. so to say that this is, this is the 1st thing i guess, american film to get to that $1000000000.00 mark. but the point is that it's, it indicates a few things. a, there is an appetite, you know, the audience is willing to go to the theaters again. and i think there's also it, it indicates that there's an appetite for quality because the reviews and everyone is really touting how good this film is compared to other marble films. that we've seen come out in the past year, but maybe we're not as appealing to a large audience. so i think there's 2 factors that work here. there's both appeal of just the quality of the story and then the desire for people just to say, i think enough is enough. we want to get back to the theaters. you know, we're tired of staying home. right. so does this embolden or should i say maybe
6:53 am
raise expectations for other movies that are, that are coming out and they will, will, will these movie makers that will be saying, well, as spiderman could do it, you know, we could do it and if they don't, they'll be severely disappointed or is this is this unique it is never easy to make a $1000000000.00. certainly not even a 1000000000 but at least go back to where it was. yeah. sure, sure, exactly. i think i think you have a few things that work here. what we've seen, and we've talked about previous the last couple years is how the streaming services have grown. so you have movies like them, you know, the new matrix coming out. and, you know, it's, they say it's disappointing in the box office. now we don't know what the actual numbers are when it comes to h, b, macs where it's streaming. so if you're a subscriber h b o max, maybe you watch matrix this weekend or, you know, watched it for free, right? and so you don't really, it's very difficult to know when it comes to the streaming side of things. what's a huge success? something like spider man. they didn't release it on disney plus,
6:54 am
so you can't hide the numbers anymore. now it's just out there and if it makes you know, a quarter or a 1000000000 in the u. s, then it's clear there's a market and appetite. if people were watching at home, you might not have known as readily, you know, what the numbers will look like. so we're in this new phase now going forward, where you do have most movies coming across platforms on streamers, as well as in theaters. so i don't know that the expectations are always going to be the same, whereas something like this, they are, they must have felt very confident they were dr. be honest. the theater, obviously it, it show you know, performed excellent in an excellent way. right? it, it just shows the, yes, the appetite is there, the audience is there, you know, we are not, we have not lost box office. it grows as a rama or any, you know, it's not going very, very, very encouraging. and let's turn to the economy overall. we have retail sales up over 8 percent, 8.5 to be exact. the report out now from for the holiday season. online sales were up 11 percent in store of 8 point one percent between november 1st and christmas eve. according to the mastercard spending pulse study. so this increase,
6:55 am
which was the strongest in 17 years. again, do you believe this goes beyond the movie theaters in the movies and maybe were, you know, were recovering as an economy? you know, we can, we can hope so. you know, there's, there's a couple things you have to, you have to factor. you have to wonder, you know, if people weren't spending, let's say, especially last year, you know, how much did that then get applied into what they felt comfortable spending. you know, this is holiday season. certainly, we've seen the economy being pumped with very, you know, the, the trillions of dollars had been spent by the federal government, quantitative easing and all this. so how much of this is really actually, you know, id say earned, you know, coming from people's pocket as far as earned melt? well, how much of this is just, you know, applied from debt from credit cards and things like this. i don't know how to analyze that, but i do feel again that there's a, there's an overall desire for people to say, you know what, we're not going to just stay home any longer. we're not going to listen to an
6:56 am
administration that just basically wants us to live in fear any longer. i really feel that the american spirit is coming out here. yeah. you have any favorite picks or 30 seconds worth or less of what people might want to see in the near future. oh, for the holiday season. again. fred, spider man is great. i think i've heard licorice pizza is quite entertaining. you know, i haven't heard such great things on west side story. i mean it's kind of a surprise to be honest because it's a classic. i mean, when people redo the classics, you just go, what's the point, you know, do it very, don't make out right. what sean say, thank you so much, my friend. good to see and have a great new years. and that's all the time we have for today. show. i'm see malls we're good for scotty now use you can follow me on twitter. feed them talk, watch my show the press every friday at 6 30 pm eastern and tuesday at 3 30 pm. thanks for watching everyone.
