that's nothing compared to the 6000 interrupted life on christmas eve and yesterday combine with 1200 cancellations and over 5000 delays here in the united states. so joining us to talk about this and more is jamie finch, former director at the national transportation safety board. i hope you had a great holiday, jamie welcome. you know, some airlines are claiming that these delays are due to weather. but is it fair to say it's the virus? and if so, how is the coven screwed this up? what, what, what, what part of cove it has caused all these cancellations? well, i think you easily say that this has been a perfect storm of everything coming together at once. there was some weather, especially in the upper northwest pacific northwest that really didn't impact alaska airlines and some of those airlines flying in that region. but obviously cove, it has had a huge impact on this, not just with the airlines and the flight crews themselves,

but also with those people on the ground. so talk about that a little bit so. so for the how much 1st of all, i remember back i'm maybe a month ago or so when these vaccine mandates came down for pilots and crew, there was certain airlines more than others that cancel lots of flights. so how much have the mandates contributed? do you believe to not enough crew being available maybe as opposed to you know, the virus itself and positive tests? i don't think that the mandates have been a negative impact on, on this cause some of this, i think that what we have is a virus that has a lot of breakthrough with the people that actually had the vaccines. my father would just, i mean he was diagnosed last week and he had already been actually with the 1st 2 vaccines. and the day before he was, he was diagnosed as positive for cove. it, he had gotten a booster. so, i mean, a lot of these things are breaking through and that's what's happening. even though they've mandated these are the pilots have been cru the,

the virus is still breaking through. and these people are still getting sick now, which is obviously a much milder case. but nonetheless, it is still covered. you know, it's not stopping people from traveling though. everything i read says the t. s a, a screen. you know, just as many people now, maybe a little more, maybe a little less i forget than they did back in 2019, during the holiday season. so people are afraid they're, they're willing to take the risk. right. i mean people are, we're getting the site, they've been pent up for the last 2 years. they basically miss crass christmas last year. and now they were just like, well you know, we're going to go in there just kind of determined in pushing on through. but the fact. 2 still remains that the flight crews are, are still sick in there. of, you know, there's been a shorthand there. now the flight, the flight. the airlines have also been positioning planes and, and doing things to make sure that, that they are, they can have the people in the right,

the equipment and everything else and the right place. but there's only just so much you can do and, and there's, this is where we are. it's just, it's one of those things. you know, i had to say this, but i mean, it's one of those things that we're all just gonna have to be patient. we're going to have to work through the us. we're all in this together like it or not. so we just got to be patient, but as we worked through this, but it things are getting better. well, that leads to my next question. how about a week from now? do you think god was still going to see these cancellations and, and, and people being stranded or, or right after new years it'll be much different than it is now. right after chris . yes, it will be much better than what you're seeing right now is obviously the big rush of, of, of the people together and being exposed. we'll also be getting past those, those times where the flight crews are having their, their, their mandated a quarantine. the they've already asked the cdc to lower that from 10 days to 5. 1 days and some of the unions were protesting against that be quite frankly,

that's the same thing that has been allowed by cdc for, for emergency responders, healthcare workers, rob and others around the country that are your central. well let's, let's talk about masks at a senate hearing last week. you had the outgoing southwest airlines ceo saying that wearing mass someplace doesn't really do anything. he counted the air filtration system on, on the plains as being more than sufficient to deal with cove. it, he got back up from the outgoing american airline, c. e o, who agreed with them. but of course the doctor found, not surprisingly, was a bit outraged. at such talk. he said, you should never take a mask off on a plane. and by the way, you may never have to, you may never ever fly again without a mass. so where are you on this? what do you think? well, you know, the mask can provide a, a bit of protection to a certain degree on some of the, the larger droplets. obviously, the smaller droplets may still get through. i think it's a matter of personal safety. i personally would, would, would what,
