a with tonight you f, establishes a new national security unit to combat domestic terrorism just as america marks the anniversary of the january 6th capitol hill. riot have eyes turned to brussels for the next round of rushes. security talks with the west. we look at the groundwork that has been laid during talks between russia and the u. s. so far more problematic partying for the british prime minister. a league email has revealed a 100 downing street staff, were invited to a booth he get together during the 1st national lockdown and it's 20 years since the 1st. the detainees arrived at the notorious us at guantanamo bay detention center. we speak with former inmates about the horrors they face was
6:01 pm
always a black hole, legal black hole. so that all sorts of shocking things that were taking place. one can only one on the biggest team are right with the 21st century. with my broadcasting live direct from studios in moscow. this is our international. i'm john thomas. during the glad to have you with us are now one year after the capitol hill riots. the u. s. department of justice has established a new domestic terrorism unit to combat threats that they claim have doubled in the past 2 years. i decided to establish that domestic terrorism unit to augment our existing approach. this group of dedicated attorneys will focus on the domestic terrorism threat, helping to ensure that these cases are handled properly and effectively coordinated across the department of justice and across the country. that was testimony we
6:02 pm
heard from mark olson, who is a deputy attorney general with the national security division of the us department of justice announcing the formation of this new entity that will deal with the issue of domestic terrorism. now this comes as part of the senate judiciary committee hearings about january 6th, that was the capital riot. and after that happened january 6, 2021. in the aftermath of that, we saw a number of republican representatives saying that the responsibility came squarely from trump, that trump quote, there's responsibility for when wednesdays attack on congress. and in the aftermath of that we see an investigation. now in the testimony we heard today, we heard department of justice officials talking about how white supremacists, anti government activists, and others are the primary domestic terrorism threat. and in some of their language, they even compare them to his lama stream. and here's what we heard from my perspective is spending a lot of time focused on the radicalization of international terrorists and
6:03 pm
islamic extremists and extremes of all stripes. this group shares many of the same characteristics. people who feel like their way of life is under attack. many of those people i would, i would guess last year had carried those exact beliefs and thoughts as they marched their way to break into the nation's capital. now, republicans described all of this as a, with chance setting. the stage were clamped down on the sand in the united states, serving a political agenda that will only further divide the country and increase division and po, or is asian u. s. society, here's some of the republican reactions. unfortunately, one year later, the majority party seems no closer to answering the central question of how the capital was left so unprepared and what must be done to ensure it never happens again. instead, they are using it as a partisan political weapon to further divide our country. now,
6:04 pm
republicans have also raised concerns about why this single riot that happened on capitol hill is getting far more attention than the year of rioting that preceded it. and the protests around the country, almost every major city had rioting, property, destruction going on in the lead up to the 2020 election and the aftermath of the killing of george lloyd. and such, there's a, there's a feeling that democrats are using january 6th to serve political ends and that these ongoing hearings and investigations and potentially this new unit being formed to investigate domestic terrorism, serves a political and for the democratic party. but we did hear this announcement of the department of justice has said that this formation of this new unit is taking place . so that's what we've heard from testimony in capitol hill, about the us department of justice and their ongoing efforts against domestic terrorism. let's cross lived to max abrams, who is a professor of political science at northeastern university in boston. thanks for being with us here in our international. it's
6:05 pm
a little past the one year anniversary of the january 6 invasion of the capital. the department of justice is announced that it is forming this unit to combat domestic terrorism. what do you make of this decision and why now? i don't think it's surprising. the biting administration responded to january sex. whatever you want to call invasion attack right? by calling it terrorism. so the terrorism, the domestic terrorism, prison has been the main way that this administration has tried to frame what happened on january 6. and of course, the american media, which is in the service of the democratic party, has been repeating, you know, these talking point, but not january 6 was a terrorist event. no, to our justice department to be in a stronger position in order to prosecute the kinds of people who participated on
6:06 pm
that day. totally. and so i think that he, okay, you know, holding up his capability to try, you know, the so called domestic terrorist. although in theory toe really doesn't have any particular political ideology, you know, that could be as lamb and that could be national or they could be communists. but in this case, the true enemies of the administration on the far right. and those are the intended target of this move. you bring up the intended targets you bring up the far right. do you think that this unit is primarily aimed at trump, supporters, specifically as they are the ones who store the building 100 percent. i mean, this administration is careful to, so you just rhetorically that terrorism can come in any stripe and the justice department of smart enough also to repeat the same point. however, in practice,
6:07 pm
the motivating event is january fit, and the intent is not only to counter terrorism threats and lawyers are very real terrorism threat in the united states from the way that there's a further agenda. and that is to weaken the political right. the probably the and so the intended target, it's not just violent extremis, but those could be sort of a right wing political ideology of namely trump supporters. now if you just take a step back a bit from which side politically, is it possible that if we just take this at face value, it was a decision taken because the just apartment fears that such an incident could possibly happen again, regardless of political fights. yes, i'm going to leave the impression that there isn't a very real domestic terrorism problem in the united states. in fact,
6:08 pm
there's more than one, you know, there's, you know, the united states has to deal with all sorts of terrorist threats yet on the far right. but also on the left, and also the more sort of traditional nama threat. and then the sort of, you know, different kinds of permutations. united states has been contending with terra so many different varieties. you know, certainly going back to the sixties and seventies and all the way back to the k k k . when you think about it, you know, the far right and, and the long history of racism in the united states. and so a lot of, you know, genuine terrorism experts are pleased by this move to make it easier to try domestic terrorists. my only concern is that it will be applied to loosely in order to promote a political agenda, independent of total violence, per se. now you mentioned that political agenda independently,
6:09 pm
what have you pull suggested americans, artist dissatisfied with the democratic government in power right now, that tends to be the case when a new president comes into power. is it possible that the unit is being formed to clamp down on anti biden descent? yes i, i do think so. there's a real sense on the political rights that they are being treated unfairly, that, that they're being targeted that the government isn't just going after terrorists, but that the government is acting as the police. and that's simply hold on popular political preference on the political right, especially to our trump, supporters is, is dangerous actually that the government as well, suddenly be government. but also big tech. you know, the sort of class i depended, private sector like twitter for example,
6:10 pm
that you social media platforms not being feel that they're disproportionately going after those on the right. that's if you're critical of the biting administration. so you promote some kind of information, even in cases where it might be true. if it cooks abiding administration, you might find yourself so called the platform, just remove them from social media even worse under some kind of investigation. so i do think that there is some democratic slippage going on in the united states, and part of it is due to this backlash against the political right. not all right. max abrams, professor of political science at northeastern university boston. thanks for brings us here in our international. anytime. all right, now, with the groundwork laid out between monday, between russia and us at security talks in geneva, eyes now turned to brussels, where negotiations with nato r do start on wednesday. so far the u. s. has promised
6:11 pm
a written response to moscow's security demands. they include no further eastward expansion of nato or missiles position near russian territory with one that. and what has been said here is our to show to bend ski. well, the talks may have been described as being business like and frying when the russian us delegation made each other in geneva. however, it does seem that now information has been laid back to washington. a slightly different view seems to be taking place with the white house spokesperson suggesting that russia could be getting ready at any moment to spread this information about what was said in those meetings in war may have been agreed in terms of potential wave forwards to angry reaction from the russian foreign ministry, with the spokesperson saying that the u. s. authorities was simply out of touch. we
6:12 pm
are preparing yourself for the civility in likelihood. no one should be surprised. i should say, if russia spreads dis, information about commitments that have not been made, or if it goes even further and instigates something as a proof text for further destabilizing activity. and so we would continue to urge everyone not to fall for any attempts to pushed and disinformation out there. as for the numerous statements made by the white house press secretary legally, but it is sincerely regretable that the american leadership is represented by people who do not know the subject well enough. but it's telling them we advise you colleagues not to forget to use critical thinking and carefully double check with at least the most important stories, so as not to show your incompetence to the whole world. now, interesting with those comments that russia could be ready to spread this information. given that the russian delegation held an open press conference, there was a live stream of that press conference with the deputy foreign minister outlining what had happened in the talks and plenty of questions in regards to that from
6:13 pm
media from across the world. us by contrast, didn't hold an open press conference, so to speak. it was a press conference that was or do only a telephone with a transcript late to being released. some might question who therefore has something to hide? but of course, what we do know from those discussions is that the u. s. is expected to give with a written confirmation response later on this week. in regards to some of the red lines that were outlined by russia, including potentially that old ukraine. now it was a session business like they said, however, it does appear that there is a lack of optimism as a result of those talks. now from both sides. we do not see any significant reason for optimism. the only thing that deserves positive assessment is the way the talks
6:14 pm
were conducted with openness, thoroughness, and directness. but this is not something that can bring satisfaction because what is important is the result, not the process. it was not what you would call a negotiation. we're not to a point where we're ready to set down texts and begin to go back and forth. even before going in to these talks that they were of course, new possible, thank sanctions being threatened by the united states. if it said russia invades ukraine, no rush is that time and time again. it does not intend to evade ukraine. and that was reiterated again at the press conference on monday night. however, the russian deputy 4 minutes is saying what russia really wants right now is i in clad guarantees that ukraine will not join the nato alliance. now will ever we are fed up with lose dog. ha bro, mrs. misinterpretation of what happened that different forms of negotiations behind
6:15 pm
closed doors. we do not trust the other sites. so to see we need iron clad waterproof bullet proof legally binding guarantees not assurances, not safeguards guarantees. so no concrete breakthrough, particularly with the united states, saying they couldn't discuss issues of ukraine and it's possible membership of native without me to being present its allies being present at the negotiating tables. and that is the stage that we are now at with new round of discussions to take place on wednesday between nato and the russian delegation, where ukraine of course will be a large part of those discussions we've also heard from the nato secretary general, whose pads lowered the ball when it comes to talks, suggesting that a good outcome would be that they would be more talks in the future rather than any
6:16 pm
concrete action. however, when stilton blake has said that when he was prime minister of norway, he had many discussions with russia. and he had found that the russians were open to negotiations. so perhaps there is a ray of lights at the end of the tunnel. yet more party pressure for the british prime minister boys johnson. but once again, it's social, as well as political elite email has revealed and other locked down gathering, involving the leader and his wife. it is claimed, a 100 downing street staff were invited for a buoy get together at the height of the covey, locked down there in 2020 hi all. after what has been an incredibly busy period, it would be nice to make the most of the lovely weather and have some socially distance drinks and the number 10 garden this evening. please join us from 6 pm and bring your own booze. well, it seems as though all the prime minister was doing during this pandemic is party.
6:17 pm
and while everybody was simply in a lockdown, it seems as though the government was acting as if there was a cool. so celebration. in fact, the prime minister chief 8 simply sent out this message saying that the lovely weather in may of 2020 was ample enough reason to host a party. and so invited around a 100 people to a, bring your own booth, downing street garden party. now it's alleged that around 40 people attended this party, including boris johnson. the only problem is the time the rules clearly stated, even reiterated just an hour before that invitation went out. but you can only me talk with one other person from enough a household and of cool social distance to meters apart. so it's probably not much of a surprise for me to tell you this huge amount of opposition to it, including cool. so the prime minister to resign, people will find it actually outrageous that the most powerful people in the tory
6:18 pm
government would be using up at number 10 downing street proving yet again that it's one rule for them. and another for the rest of us. if the prime minister had a shred of integrity or an ounce of shame, he would resign many months ago, boris johnson has consistently showed that he has no regard for the rules he puts in place for the rest of us. at the time everyone would have known dead going to a budget was wrong. so how can those run to country have filters was ok? now, number 10 are yet to comment, but forest johnson has previously and repeatedly said that all guidelines have been followed, of course, and metropolitan police now weighing in that considering investigating and the now in communication with the cabinet office. but just to give you a bit of an idea of what was happening at the time here in london on may the 25th, that's 5 days after this so called pocky 10 days after that wine and cheese alleged soiree forest children said this, the only reason we have been able to make such progress is because the country has
6:19 pm
observed the social distancing rules. feel free to speak to people yourself if you feel they are not observing the rules and the police will step in if necessary. so it comes as no surprise then it's no wonder that even tories on now losing trust in the government. according to the latest shocking poll, i'm more than a 3rd of tories thing, the boris johnson should quit and almost 4 and 10 think he is doing a bad job. of course, considering is now being dozens of party revelations and allegations floating around during the lock down period. it sounds as though the government was almost on a booze cruise, but it seems as though bars, johnson may not go down with his ship. it is 20 years since the 1st prisoners were taken to the notorious us prison camp at guantanamo bay. and we have been hearing about what they went through. former detainee blossom bag was held there for 3 years without ever being charged with any crime. unfortunately, on this anniversary 20 years,
6:20 pm
there are people i spoke to young boys. one no longer young that 1819 years old, who never met at all because they probably beheld without child or travel channel listening to me and i saw 2 people. i saw one present with his hands part of his head to the top of the cage being repeatedly punched and keep them children. the americans accepted that this was a homicide. i also was subject to the sounds of a woman screaming in the nest cell that i was led to believe was my wife, while interrogating, way pictures of my children in front of me and threatened to send me to egypt and the syria. if i didn't cooperate so, so they're all sorts of shocking things that were taking place. and i, as i say, i was on the get the 3 is there a few people been up to literally 20 years without charge across a new report by human rights watch details. the tragic extent of the systemic abuse
6:21 pm
had the prince camp and recess is the torture and illegal detention of hundreds of muslims at guantanamo, and calls upon president joe biden, to repair the damage done. and finally closed the detention center. here's a brief history of that infamous facility. ah.
6:22 pm
we also spoke to 2 more former guantanamo bay detainees, and like many others, both of them were never charged with a crime. here is what they had to say. we think it will tell them what we try not to, but it does come up. of course it's continuous is something that continues with us throughout our life is something that is a grain inside our hearts and spirits. and we have to think about it all the time is something that we cannot change. and sometimes one can tell them, well, like now was in the news. we think about those 2 are still in so i can tell them i
6:23 pm
was there for 5 years throughout the 5 years there was continuous thought. so. busy there was no rules, no god, no laws, nothing. the god did what they liked and the american system did what they want, something else. so sometimes you are immolated sexually. sometimes you're beaten. sometimes anything that they thought will get information out of the prisoners and they were willing to commit those books. that's why we're kept in montana when tell them or is a black hole legal black hole. what is going on? you know what channel is a place that retake garage, you know, injustice. one time when i was a simple torture, injustice, lawlessness, abuse of power in different dishes. one can only is one of the biggest human right by the 21st century. no law lives there. no human rights, no any kind of rules or basic right for, for humans. so gonna tell me the existence is a torture injustice as it is now,
6:24 pm
it's 20 years. and one thing i will turn to be a political game or a, you know, because what want to keep it open because that gives you some kind of publicity or something more books savvy. what is that humanity and they know what else is wrong? they want to know shouldn't exist in the 1st place. is disturbing landmark for america. now it broke the world record for daily registered covered infections on monday with more than $1300000.00 cases according to reports. now the de also saw the highest number of hospitalizations with many medical facilities overwhelmed and facing the severe staffing shortages. health authorities have even allowed metix infected with coven to stay on at work. if they have mild symptoms, they will, however, be required to wear extra protective masks and should be assigned to only treat code patients. it is still not clear quite how this will be put into action.
6:25 pm
we don't have any information on whether hospitals will adopt this approach or not . but what we do know is that hospitals are expecting many more patients in the coming days than they're going to be able to care for with the current resources. i spoke with my colleague earlier spoke with, excuse me, sorry about that. david green, the president of the service employees international union. he says, allowing the mildly infected to continue working could worse in the crisis. you know, it's a really scary, dangerous time because you know our job, our 1st job is to protect the people. we serve the patients in these hospitals. and by forcing our nurses and health care workers to tap to come in, if their coven pause, it puts these patients at risk. so we're, we're asking, you know, our local elected officials here and our community groups, and anybody that will listen to you. we want to reversal this policy and we,
6:26 pm
we really believe that it's health and safety crisis if they force our nurses to have to come to work while their cobra expose we. we thought it could be, it can make a really difficult crisis, even more difficult. american states suffering the most draconian coded restrictions include california and new york. many people are leaving these areas attracted by the tax benefits of other states, more than $600000.00 people leaving new york and california for lower tax states. now the biggest winners, not surprisingly worth texas and florida, which have of course no income taxes are now joined by julia clark. a realtor who herself has moved to texas from california. thanks for being with us here in our international kind of an interesting story. if i do say so myself, i actually lived in california before coming here. what do you think? californians are moving to texas and what acts aspects of modern life in california are making people uncomfortable. they're well in california. people feel like hell,
6:27 pm
fornia left them. they're not leaving california, i moved myself from california and i can have twice the price of the twice as big house for half the money. and people are moving here in droves. there is construction everywhere and they are bringing their conservative politics or not. how has the slow california migrants changed since the started the pandemic as that had anything to do with people getting out of there? yes, people are really excited about the fact that they can work remotely. and so a lot of them have jobs still in california that they can work remotely. why pay so high of prices for real estate when they can live the dream in texas and far better neighborhood? that is more family friendly and there isn't such, i mean people come here and they,
6:28 pm
there are in tears because they see the kids out playing. they see the kids in school. whereas in california everybody's been locked down the whole time. is it just a parent democrats? making people uncomfortable in these areas or is it the financial advantages on offer elsewhere? it's both, but i would say that it's really attractive and it's kind of made. the people have to pull the trigger. they're coming. and every time that there's some kind of mandate or whatever were inundated with more people that want to come out and it's just not stopping there are there's a pipeline of california coming out and in new build areas you half of the people are california. and now there seems like a, i mean, why, texas, why you, why your clients is, it's just, is this a political decision, or is there something more to it?
6:29 pm
well, because i did it myself, there's a lot of people that you know, trust the fact that i know the areas in southern california and i can say this city is like this city and i have kind of the i can speak california m texan. so i get, you know, the whole transition and also it's just the lifestyle that there are a lot of people that are conservative in, in california. and their voice is not being heard. and they are paying taxes for so many people. and they have so much on their back that when they come here, they can get twice the house for half the price. have to make a parallel here in florida also has an up turn in people moving from new york and california as well. are they moving for similar reasons? i would say so because in california there's just no end in sight with
6:30 pm
all of the taxes. and i think people are really nervous about real estate too, because they might change the some of the laws and they're already trying to do that. and so people are trying to cash out. well, they can. right. julie clark, thanks for your thoughts here on rti international. interesting perspective. thank you. all right, there's a press here on our international. i'll be back in about, let's say 30 minutes with another federal experience. the when i would say wrong. why don't just don't the rules. yes to shape out the thing becomes the after.
