7:00 pm
personally, i'm going to resist, i don't see how that strategy will be successful, a very critical time. time to sit down and talk the canadian city of ottawa declares a state of emergency in response to the truck, a convoy protest against vaccine mandate to city mer, site serious danger and threat to residence. and also in these stories that shaped the week on our international russia shuts down the moscow office of german broadcaster doors, well after berlin blash, our sister channel, our g d e in germany. last trillion curling team member is allowed to compete at the basing winter olympics, despite testing part of it for cobit, we ask if the rules are for some countries but not for others. and at least 6 children are children, northwest syria, as american commandos claim to have taken out the leader of islamic state at the

same time and place the broadcasting live direct from our studios in moscow. this is our international. i'm john thomas. certainly going to have with us as we recap the week stop stories with our weekly program. now the mayor of kennedy's capital city ottawa has declared a state of emergency over the truckers. freedom convoy protest citing serious danger and a threat to the safety of residence. he had earlier accused the drivers protesting in ottawa for a 10th day of disruptive behavior, claiming that they are out of control. and the organizers vehemently deny that saying the movement is entirely peaceful. they accused the government of smearing them with allegations of extremism. the freedom convoys started out as a protest against covert vaccine mandate for cross border truckers. it has since escalated into a nationwide rallying point against prime minister just intrude government on
7:02 pm
sunday, around 5000 people with a 1000 vehicles flooded downtown ottawa parliament split on the issue with opposition. conservatives largely supporting the convoy, while the governing liberal party have branded it an insurrection. our city is under siege. what we're seeing is bigger than just the city of ottawa problem. this is a nationwide insurrection. we need a concrete plan to put an end to this. meanwhile the truckers are pulling in political support south of the border as well. for some reason, the governor of florida is launching a probe into the u. s. website. go fund to me for withholding millions of dollars and donations for the canadian truckers. the fundraising platform claims the movement violated its terms of service. but rhonda santas has accused the company of fraud and deceptive practices. for more on this, we can cross live to independent political analyst alice under. bruno, thanks for being with us here. are to international as usual. john, so do you find the ottawa mayor's decision to declare
7:03 pm
a state of emergency necessary and do you really think the protesters pose any danger to the residence there in the city? in short answer, no, no, and yeah, and yes, the reason why the mayor has called the an end or because it's causing because the trackers are causing a big disruption. apparently, according to sound reports i've read this morning, it's costing the city at least a $1000000.00 a day. that's all the way. so they are having an effect. that said, i was witnessing some of the related protests in toronto, which is kind of the biggest city and in as far as impact, i think toronto might be more interesting to look at than, than ottawa. because the,
7:04 pm
the biggest city has the most businesses and has the most diverse population. and what i saw, yes, that was quite interesting. because apart from the peaceful nature of the protest, i was the friendly attitude of many of the pastors by to the protesters. and they were bringing them food and i saw people with i'm not sure if the images i sent had the pictures, but i saw the people with back saying treats for truckers and and people were buying coffees and so on to give to the truckers and they were the support was uniform in the sense of it was multi cultural. there were people from every cultural, multi ethnic group and language that i could see. i was on my way just to do some regular shopping when i went straight into one of the heart of the
7:05 pm
heart of the protest in the downtown core of to the main intersection which would be avenue road and blue street. where a lot of the luxury shops are also located. so it was an interesting site for one thing. it was the 1st time i should use my video camera from the phone . i am. so, i mean, just the, looking at the images, looking at the witnessing, the, the, the protests and having some of the background on read what was going on. and my 1st impression was example when in 2024. now because unlike canadian politicians, he's been much faster and smarter to the, to the beat. he immediately started to support this movement. understanding that it wasn't just about vaccine mandates. these people make
7:06 pm
a living trucking and they don't want to do deal with the additional paperwork that they have to produce at voters. but it's also about the increasing cost of fuel rights is being driven and not just in canada. well, a question about the actual purchase themselves, they are legal, it is a legal right in canada to protest. but with the state wrapping up restrictions on this movement. what sort of precedent does that set for the future when they did a legal and as i said and by the way there was a police presence and the police seemed quite calm and they were actually getting along well with, with the truckers, even though the there were lots of noise being made and so from that point of view, very certainly family friendly protests for sure. and
7:07 pm
now i don't know what requires to have to they could, can nuisance in the sense, perhaps nice disruption to business, but that is the point they, they didn't choose these intersections by accident. they're going to drive traffic to a standstill in a city like toronto, for example, that already has a massive traffic problem with the state of emergency. if they do declare the state of emergency which looks like they've gone through with that, how does this change the game for the protestors who have said that they are in it for the long haul? and they said that they will stay there until their demands are met. do you think that this will eventually become a major stand off or does this just seem like it's a lot of nothing yet? yes. and that's the thing. and i mentioned the, it was very friendly, so i and the population has supported them so, so far now if the state of emergency means that they're going to be driven out,
7:08 pm
they're going that implies the use of some kind of force. but i, again, i'm not sure how this is going to be playing out because it just from a physical point of view, they have made a big trucks in, in the streets and, you know, the size of north american trucks blocking on lanes a major streets. and major highways, apparently this was a record setting convoy terms of length zone. and they're not, it's not going to the, the ab government has ruled out using the army as at least the last that i have seen. but them that, that could easily turn and well, we could see some hostility for sure. if the authorities use a means other than a robot of persuasion or else under bruno. thank you for your insight. in this we
7:09 pm
know that if anything develops, you keep across developments for us. thanks a lot, appreciate that. i'm only one kilometer from the protests. indeed indeed, all right, stay safe and also we appreciate your insight. thanks. thank you for switching gears. now, germany's media regulator this week, band archie, his sister channel r t d e, across all platforms, in retaliation, russia shut down that the moscow bureau of german broadcaster deutsch vellum, with the foreign ministry also warning of further measures or she's unconscious dawn, courtier has a story for us, it was this week, the biggest violation of freedom of the press in germany. the country's top media regulator took r t d. e's broadcast off the air on the internet via satellite social media. absolutely everywhere. the required media lo license was not available. the organization and distribution of the tv program by a live stream on the internet for the mobile and smart tv up archie, news on fire,
7:10 pm
satellite miss death will be discontinued. what was russia left to do, but to respond and kind, deutsche avella was told, its offices in russia will be shut down. it's journalists press accreditation, revoked, and it's russian language broadcasts. taken off the air on top of all that a blacklist was declared to include everyone complicit in this enormous censorship campaign against our t. russia is drawing up a list of representatives of states and public structures in germany involved in the streets in the broadcast of all c, d and putting pressure on the russian media outlets will be denied entry to the russian federation. moscow promise. this was just the 1st stage of measures that it was willing to take after all this r t d e ban is only the latest episode and a drawn out pressure campaign that's been aimed at obstructing r t from broadcasting in germany. sure, the government denies playing any role in all this, but it's done nothing about the fact that a number of banks won't do business with our channel or that the country's top
7:11 pm
media regulator seems unwilling to even reach a compromise. that's all despite r t holding a legal european broadcast license. i t t e was nice and since happier, under the european convention of trans frontier television i t t e can but cost is programs in 73 year pain. countries including tammany arching can still appeal the decision. but how much good will that do at this point? almost immediately after r t d e created a youtube account, the platform deleted it. when it tried to broadcast over satellite, the signal was so poor. people couldn't even tune in german officials have even labeled our german language channel, an irritant. it's not difficult to imagine that these problems were deliberately set up to impede r t d e's success, which i know about the closure of bank accounts and so on. there's a large number of tactics they're using. so all t d consol crate. they're infringing on freedom of speech. and that's very bad. and yet berlin's acting like moscow took these measures out of the blue
7:12 pm
r t d is currently broadcasting without the license and the channel has not applied for license. the german state media office is decision was based on this. this is a completely different situation to deutsch velez. his license has been revoked. profit this was the 1st time or even maybe the 2nd time r t was obstructed from broadcasting one might say rush overreacted, but r t d was entirely banned from broadcasting in germany. and that is no small step in the wrong direction. we spoke to film director morton traffic, who says the ban on our tv is aimed at silencing those who challenge mainstream narratives in the western hemisphere. so much of what comes up the russia is viewed with such suspicion because that that creates a world view where a lot of people are missing out on potentially valuable corrections or,
7:13 pm
or alternative viewpoints to look at the big tech giants who are already censoring . sometimes in very bizarre ways, statements or viewpoints that are supposedly unacceptable, is just a part of a general trend toward a q rated or controlled media world. or this is obviously, i think, connected to the prevailing political situation not least connected to ukraine. i would suspect australia registered its 1st ever olympic curling event when this weekend events, despite a team member testing positive for cove, it at the beijing winter games leading to claims of double standards for some athletes. ortiz alexia shasky. comments from the host city. winter olympics are continuing in the chinese capital bay jing and we may have a 1st scandal of big proportions he involving australian curling team. now on
7:14 pm
saturday night, one of the team members tightly gill was tested positive for cove it. however, on sunday morning, the chinese authority said that she was cleared to participate in the competition while observing close contact rules while looking at curling and the way this game is played. you cannot imagine any way that this is free of any close contacts. gill herself was probably very surprised to hear the news already admitting she was heart broken. and the official explanation from the chinese authorities was that her covered readings war to law. and that's why she was allowed to participate. i had a look at how this was actually happening and obviously gill had no mask on whatsoever . and move like that would seem as a very hot warming gesture from the health authorities to allow athletes with low symptoms of cove at 19 to participate in the games. had it not been for multiple
7:15 pm
hot breaking stories involving many athletes from across the planet who had been preparing for the games for, for yes. tested positive upon arrival and were forced to miss out on the olympics here in bay jing such as the case of a russian by athlete musket salva, who was immediately taken into isolation upon arrival, having tested positive for covet and just a few days back, she put a post on instagram describing horrible conditions as she described it. she's been captain. on top of that, there are many cases involving colleagues of mine, journalists who've also tested positive. i'm been locked away and even more so those who were on the same plane with them and were sat next to them despite testing negative, are also put into mordor itself. isolation, just to remind you that all of us here are living in a bubble that we are the allows to be inside the hotels and at olympic venue were not allowed to go into the city. but with all these new regulations and rules
7:16 pm
imposed by the chinese authorities, all this seems like an unnecessary requirement for us here. why are we supposed to be in a bubble when people like gil, are allowed to participate despite having tested positive for corporate, or at least it's not all that sour for many athletes winning golds and phil is already that is the case of alexander bush and off of the russian, the limpid committee team who managed to win gold in the sky race. and that is the 1st goal for the r o c team here in beijing. of course i'm keeping you updated with everything happening here in the chinese capital lecture. says the rti reporting from beijing and china a veteran reporter class with a u. s. state department spokesperson this week and as officials failed to back up their claim that rushes planning a false. busy flag operation to justify a war with ukraine. what is the evidence that you had that suggested that the russians are even planning with math? i'm not saying that they're not, but you just come out and say this and expect those just to believe it. without you
7:17 pm
showing a shred of evidence that it's actually true other than when i ask, or what anyone else asked what the information you said, why just gave it to you, which was just you making a statement. we do so we do classify information only when we're confident in that information. if you doubt, if you doubt the credibility of the u. s. government of the british government, of other governments and want to you know, find solace and information that the russians are putting out. that is, that is where you to do moscow says it's not surprised by yet another string of accusations saying it's reminiscent of 2003 when the u. s. made false claims of iraqi weapons of mass destruction. meanwhile, the full text of the confidential us nato responds to russia's security concerns has been leaked. the document was published by spanish daily l pace and later confirmed as authentic by washington. really are my colleagues,
7:18 pm
neil harvey and soft taylor, discuss its contents. over the past few weeks, we've seen the highest diplomatic levels, riley's of accusations, verbal sparring, and that's just what's been happening and public's. we can only imagine what's going on behind closed doors, but now a fresh document leak has offered us a glimpse into what is indeed happening behind those doors. and it really showed that moscow in washington, alongside nato, a very, very far from reaching any kind of consensus with regards to ukraine, issue, uninsured. well beyond move, not that does seem to be almost a blind unwillingness from the military alliance to recognize any of russia security concerns. now, the spanish language paper open hasn't managed to get it comes on the nato and us response to russia. security proposals now will remember those proposals they was sent back in december. they fin triggered a flurry of diplomatic talks and calls and essentially they requested legal guarantees, restricting for the nato expansion, specifically with regards to ukraine. the document that we're seeing now though,
7:19 pm
reveals a very blunt response from washington and brussels. and it's in all states should respect the right of other states to choose or change security arrangements and to decide their own future and foreign policy free from outside interference. in this slide, we reaffirm our commitment to nato's open door policy under article 10 of the washington treaty. we have of course, requested comment from both nato and the us state department. but if we take just this document, it seems that it is an open shot case. them, they will not compromise. that is despite flat and person warning. but this is a very reckless disregard of russia's concerns. it's not well for help, because do people realize that this could potentially set all nations involved down a very dangerous path of no return associates? just because when you much listen carefully to what i say in ukraine's own doctrine, the documents it is written that they plan to return crimea, including by military means that it's not what they say publicly. imagine for
7:20 pm
yourself that ukraine and nate members will begin military operations in crimea. what do we do? go to war with the nato block? has anyone thought about that? so the situation is it seems to me both sides refusing to budge and let him have pigeon set it there in a slightly different context. but what do we do? what's versus reaction? been to this moscow has already sent follow up questions to this document. so clearly that is a desire for continued a dialogue, but most dispositional this has been consistent from the beginning. it recognizes, of course, that every single country has the right to determine its own policy and assure its own security thought is not what's being disputed. here the issue is when a countries choices have ramifications beyond its borders and actually pose a very real physical threat to someone else. and let's just be clear. a potential natal launchpad located in ukraine is just a couple of minutes miss all away from, from russia. so it's essentially, i think,
7:21 pm
this fear that really underlies russia's concerns, even though you know shows abortion is just ignoring our concerns, the u. s. and need to refer to the rights of states to freely choose how to insure the security. but it's not just about giving someone this right. after all, this is only one parts of the well known formula for the indivisibility of security . the 2nd integral part says that once not allow the strengthening of any one security at the expense of the security of other states. so the russian leaders asking, why must we sacrifice our security that someone else can feel safe? not said it would be remiss if i didn't point out that the document has some encouraging moments. i'm talking about reestablish communication long military channels, reinstating the nature office here and moscow discussing arms control. so reducing missile deployment to ukraine. but if we get to the bottom of it, let's be blown. according to this document, the west responds to normal,
7:22 pm
existential concern of russia says, we have here, but we don't care enough to do anything. and this is in fact case clothes, we're not gonna discuss it further. but here's a list of much smaller things that we feel that we can give you to project an image that we are listening and being co operative but do nothing in any way to address your fundamental concerns. and with that kind of inflexible rhetoric combined, of course, with this ongoing footage of millions of dollars worth of weapons being sent to kiev. it's very difficult even with the best of intentions to see where to move from. now, the employees watchdog in the u. k. has revealed a disturbing internal culture of massage and attitudes on sexual violence. now, bit of warning, you may find some of the following content defense. if the report includes private messages between officers of the metropolitan police force which serves greater london in one and officer says that he would like to rape a female colleague and other jokes about getting a woman on to bed with using

the right and murder of forever on by a serving metropolitan police officer known to colleagues of the rapists during his career. i'm just the mattress serious about ridging, the force of rotten abuses of power. surely those individuals must go and that boss to all is a toxic, dangerous culture that yet again, leadership times a blind eye to any cost. when we actually started our best a geisha, individuals on the score stopped all worked on that one investigation actually mushroom. and to 9 separate investigations and what we uncovered, where c is, the thing that was happening here was that they thought it doesn't just be devasted public. it also has a devastating impact on the internal culture within the b service. because these

minimize civilian casualties. unicef confirms that at least 6 children were killed and one girl was badly injured overnight in the border town of at my in the northwest of syria due to heavy violence. the pentagon says 2 children and a woman were killed during that rate when the isis leader blew himself up. a u. s. department of defense spokesperson claims that there are quote, strong, strong indications. american forces caused no civilian deaths. we spoke with juliet toma from the u. n's children's agency about the cost of ongoing violence in syria . when we have seen an escalation and violence in that area on what this means is that children pay 1st and they pay most. and if we compare the number of casualties of children during the month of january in comparison to, let's say, december last year, the number is so it's in the higher. and this has been the case since the beginning

of the year. and this has got to stop children continue to be the 1st and most to pay in this 11 year long conflict. we call an old fight and all parties to the conflict in syria to stop the fighting for the sake of serious children and its future. also video has emerged of what is said to be the helicopter, that us commandos were forced to blow up during the raid. here you can see what's left of the vehicle. american officials denied crashed or was shot down and says, the crew is safe. adding that it was a mechanical failure that led to the helicopter being detonated. we spoke to locals, who say they witnessed the raid. soon as i left them there, there were helicopters, flying low altitude, about 4 or 5 aircraft. then we saw soldiers landing. the soldiers targeted a house near where i live. the house was surrounded. they spoke through land speakers telling everyone surrender or the house would be destroyed. then the

fighting started near inside the house for about an hour. the helicopter carried out 4 or 5 machine gun attacks on the house. okay, bummer! we were preparing to go to sleep and suddenly we heard wind and the sound of helicopters. my aunt went to see what was going on. she found the sky totally red through loudspeakers to go out. we did that, but then they searched us and hank of my father, they asked our names and what we knew about our neighbors. we said we didn't know anything. they asked us to move to the neighboring house and started rating us. that is a for me in the weekly this hour, i will be back with another look in about 30 minutes. stay with us, our international ah ah, ah.
