7:00 pm
a, i'm still in white question more. ah, good evening, and welcome to the new as on our to america, i'm fair in front act broadcasting from our studios right here in washington, dc. here's the headlines that are making waves today. first up, it's the 1st of its kind in 40 years and only the 11th emergency session and you and history. what happened tonight at the united nations plus that special session, put china in the hot seat, why the united states is having a hissy fit over china's reaction to the situation in ukraine. and finally, at the end of it all, it's all about the money. how the crisis in ukraine could affect the bottom line for every day americans. the news that our t america starts right now. awe
7:01 pm
we're welcome you for being with us tonight in new york, the united nations general assembly met again to debate the crisis between russia and ukraine, reflecting widespread demands for a ceasefire along with escalating concerns for the millions of ukrainians. arch correspondent caleb martin tells us more we heard from russian ambassador, no ben z a, he's the permanent representative of russia to the united nations. and he took questions from reporters and he made a lot of very important points. one point he made was that zelinski, he was basically confronted by a reporter who said that, how can you say that there are nazis in ukraine when the ukranian president zalinski is jewish, to which the russian ambassador pointed out that zalinski doesn't seem to have the real power in the country, he took power on a platform of peace and bringing the country back together. however, at this point, at this point, zalinski has proved himself he's proved himself to be weak and have no real power.
7:02 pm
that was what was said by the russian ambassador benzene and it appears. the real power in, in ukraine is with the military and with nationalist forces and at the present really has no ability to control them. so simply pointing to zalinski is identity and heritage is being jewish to deny the reality of the as of battalion of the forces that are tearing down world war 2 memorials of the, you know, of the, of the extreme anti russian and pro nazi sentiments. the torchlight marches for a step on mendera to point to zalinski heritage to deny all that is simply is simply a facade. now, he went on when confronted with allegations that, that russia had bomb civilian areas. he told other reporters asking those questions to verify the reports because there's quite a bit of a fake news going around. and there's quite a few videos videos that have come from places like syria or libya, videos from even video games that are being circulated and claimed and passed off
7:03 pm
as showing russian atrocities. he went on to say the russia did not bomb civilian areas in give. i made that point, so that's, that's the russian basset are speaking to reporters in the un press briefing room. now this comes after debate that took place at the un general assembly hall that the un general assembly, the ide states and its allies put forward a, a resolution before the un general assembly to condemn russia. now when that resolution was put forward, we 1st heard from the un secretary general after that we then heard from, from the representative of ukraine who thundered and made up heated allegations against russia compared to world war 2, et cetera. this is what we heard from the un representative of ukraine when he spoke at the general assembly hall. deadly air strikes dropped on civilians has across the entire country. and the russian troops crossed ukraine's boldest from the territory. old russia, billers, and the occupied bars. so you cranes, dunbar,
7:04 pm
and crimea, does it remind you of something, doesn't it? indeed, medically a perilous could be drawn with the beginning of the 2nd the will will do. it was chosen by someone who is right now sitting in the bunker. we know what happened with the person who sat in the bunker in berlin in may 1945. now it's also important to note that in the un general assembly hall benz via the russian ambassador had the opportunity to descend some of these allegations. he got up and he talked about the need for negotiations. he talked about how this resolution that was put forward was not a pro ukrainian resolution, as it does not put any blame on the forces that instigated this conflict with their shelling and attacks on don atkin, lugens, and all as well as that. you know, their continued escalation threats of ukraine to join nato piling lethal weapons
7:05 pm
into ukraine. and from there he talked about the need to not believe everything circulating throughout mainstream media. a lot of the reports coming out of ukraine widely circulated in american media have been debunked. he pointed out that at this point, what is needed is negotiation. this is what the benzine said when speaking to the un general assembly hall because of suitable movement. but in would you look at those to fool direct dialogue between key of and the don't bass was needed. however, this been get more confirmation by the countries. leadership. little grain is not ready for such dialogue for taking steps to rhonda don't bass special status as provided by the men's, ke agreements. in the end, this convinced us that we simply have no right to make the residence of don bass suffer renewals while there was a lot of podium pounding from the united states and its allies. this meeting of the general assembly did not really accomplish anything. this was
7:06 pm
a lot of smoke and mirrors and theatrics by allies of the united states and their efforts to demonize rajah and obscure the real roots of the conflict. while much of the world stands united against russia's military operations in ukraine, china is taking a different approach on the issue. although not showing support for rushes, actions, the asian superpower has made clear that it believes blame for the crisis does not end with moscow here. now, as ortiz alex mahala vetch, as the west plains to send more weapons to ukraine. china is calling for diplomacy and restraint on all sides. montana has noticed the statements made by all parties on the new killer issue. i want to emphasize that on the issue of european security, reasonable security concerns of all countries should be paid sufficient attention. that after the continuous 5 rounds of east were expansion of nato, the legitimate appeal of russia out of insecurity concern should be given attention
7:07 pm
and approach properly through you all the relevant parties should remain calm and exercise restraint, so as to further avoid escalation of the situation russian president vladimir putin has the world on edge after putting his nuclear forces on increased alert. movie and many fi is a major escalation of tension. spike with the u. s. and need however, amongst other comments from her, forgotten that just a couple of months ago, spread nuclear talk was coming from washington. in december g o p, senator roger wicker suggested that that us should consider launching a nuclear strike against russia to defend to ukraine. china has voiced its displeasure with all the rhetoric when i want to affirm that china has always believed that no one can win a new kind of warm and no nuclear war can be fought. meanwhile, it's safe to say that while showing understanding for russia security concerns, staging is not fully backing that countries actions in ukraine at
7:08 pm
a meeting of the united nations security council, instead of siding with russia. along with india and the united arab emirates, china abstained from voting on a security council. resolution was aimed at ending the war in ukraine. in that said, china made it clear that it believes a true diplomatic by all parties involved in the police, the path to resolve the issue. again, look in china support equal foot, a dialogue between the you and russia on european security issues and upholding the principle of undivided security to eventually form a balanced, effective, sustainable european security mechanism. when it comes to the multitude of sanctions against russia, china as opposed to the measures not only had lifted restrictions on russian, we imports to countermeasure the efforts. but it has made multiple statements against the use of such penalties. to help with extra your china disapproved of using the sanctions to solve problems. we are again, unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law or facts that long
7:09 pm
prove that sanctions could not help solve the problem. to create a new one. on sunday, the united nations security council voted for an emergency meeting of the 193 member general assembly order to address the ongoing crisis is behavior ukraine, the world court for news on r t, america and alex mileage. well, the break it all down, we are joined by former pentagon, official micro maloof and independent journalist, ben norton. gentleman, great to see you both tonight. michael, let's start with you. the fact that china called for diplomacy on the situation which is kind of a thing that i think i never, anyone would want. why does the united states see it as such a threat? well, i think china, the united states probably feels that china has basically taken sides with russia. but i thought it was interesting the way china came out with, with its position. it was a 5 point position. and at the same time, it recognized something very, very critical. in spite of all of the chaos that's going on right now,
7:10 pm
that is the idea of indivisibility. you don't increase the security of one side at the expense of the other. and indeed, there's a whole litany of history and agreements that support that argument, all of which have been violated. and that's why russia is upset about it today. it doesn't believe it. and he pointed out that nato has expanded at least 5 times. notwithstanding the fact that there were these assurances and these agreements, and i think that that's, that that's notable. but it, but he did call for direct negotiations between the 2 countries, russian and ukraine protect civilian life and a respect for territorial integrity. which i think, i think what china is trying to do is be be the adult in the room and, and trying to position itself to be that. and to be that adult,
7:11 pm
that other countries may gravitate toward to come to look for a referee. if you will, book mark that thought. then i want to show you this article. it came out just before the weekend hit from the new york times, saying that they're anonymous sources say the biden administration gave china and tell on the russian true build up to deter them. china, those anonymous sources say, then turned around and gave this intel to russia. now we cannot independently confirm this, but it's interesting though, on the timing of this article been, is this the convenient you know, way to kind of get that hate snowball on china moving? absolutely. and we see an incredible extremely hypocritical and cynical strategy by the white house. they have been accusing china of genocide, imposing sanctions on china, saying that, you know, president, she is, is a bogeyman under americans beds. and then immediately they,
7:12 pm
they expect china to suddenly ally with the u. s. against its own ally, russia. this is a ridiculous policy and of course china is not going to ally with the country that is antagonizing that, that is accusing it ridiculously of, of genocide and others suppose a crime. so the reality is that the white house acts as though every other country in the world is going to abandon its foreign policy and go along with whatever washington wants when it's convenient. but no, china and russia have a strategic partnership. and yes, it doesn't mean that china always 100 percent agrees with russian everything. but they understand that they have a mutual adversary, which is united states and china has repeatedly throughout not not just this conflict over ukraine, but for many years now has called for abandoning the cold war mentality. constantly . we hear from the chinese foreign minister wang ye, and other top diplomats, they constantly repeat that phrase, abandon the cold war mentality. but unfortunately what we see from washington and
7:13 pm
also brussels is they keep pushing for new cold war. and not only are they pushing for a new cold war, they're actually accelerating the hot war right now. and ukraine by sending more weapons to ukraine. the u is now sending warplanes to ukraine, so they really are, you know, we were talking about this narrative a few weeks ago of the u. s. in the european union trying to fight until the last ukranian. well, it really looks like they're, they're trying to fight to the last ukranian and instead of pushing for diplomacy, they're trying to accelerate this miss war. even more boring fuel on the fire with more weapons and we're warplanes. now an interesting parallel, i want to give you each kind of a minute to respond here, but so you have the situation with taiwan. the u. s. has also supplied taiwan with anything militarily that at once, but the difference is, is that of china where to attack taiwan, americans don't know this or many of them don't. the united states has a pact that it would go and fight for taiwan. we have this pack with taiwan,
7:14 pm
not with ukraine, poon has said as to demands. as you said before, michael, you know about not being a part of nato as far as ukraine and ukraine would. demilitarize. why do you think the u. s. has a pact with taiwan, but they're not doing the same for ukraine. i'll give each 30 seconds mike. well, it's not. ukraine's not a part of nato. we had a separate agreement with taiwan that goes back many, many years. but there's a question of just what does that support mean? does that mean we're going to send in troops and that would be total suicide on the part of the us? that it will, it more than likely means military assistance. but i also want to point out that the, that, that the united states regard russia and china as allies. and that they're going to criticize china equally because they do see this military alliance. but developing between russia and china, even though russia, even though china rather paper, is playing that cool and, and not not showing its hand, but there is cooperation. and i think that this is where the united states is
7:15 pm
trying to build that case of it's you world order. now being challenged by this new multi paula world order by russia, china that's emerging. and this is, and this is threatening to the sad a quick, 30 seconds. do you think china is the one that is going to be the adult in the room and solve it? absolutely. china has been calling for diplomacy. and as i said, the u. s. in the you instead of pushing for diplomacy, they're trying to accelerate this war in ukraine. and it's the ultimate hypocrisy. i mean, this war is very tragic. they're the ones that pushed russia to militarily intervening . and now instead of trying to push or diplomacy, the e u and the u. s. are accelerating this war in ukraine. they say they don't want to warn ukraine than why are they sending more weapons? why are they sending warplanes? it's china, not united states, it's china and other responsible countries that are calling for diplomacy in a peaceful resolution to this conflict. michael opened norton. great to have you both on as always. thank you. thank you. and so ahead we're going to get the latest
7:16 pm

7:17 pm
out of the sky about big a problem is this. i pointed schachter and i don't understand. oh, available on the r t america portable tv ah martin, dwayne said it's easier to move people than to convince them they've been told. that could be why america is so divided. because people have been fed fake news paid for like corporate interests. they beat you down until you relieve their fairy tales. well, here's a story for you. it's called the big and it's full of fats nonfiction, with all the feeling. i mean,
7:18 pm
everyone in the world should experience and you get it on the open, the role, the world, according to jesse. welcome to my world, come along for the ride. with ah, max are continuing coverage and the crisis in ukraine, we're going to bring you to the front lines and our teeth were a gasdio reporting from the eastern part. and he crane the city of mary opal, which is ukraine's largest sport, is,
7:19 pm
is now almost surrounded with the garrison. that is there. the russian side has said that it is nationalist elements that are putting up the stiffest resistance and the those units belonging to the regular military to regular formations, that they are choosing to negotiate. and in some cases, lay down their arms and return to their homes. but it is very difficult to verify this information at this time because event, sir, developing so quickly. and because there are so few reliable reports close to the front lines where it is extremely dangerous. the situation there is that many roads have been mind. we have received reports from the city of dance, which is a half way between the crimea and mario ball, which is at the axis of russian advance, which is a, which is where you credit units have planted in the city itself and in the
7:20 pm
outskirts minds for example, to, to surprise that the devastated advancing force as it is very difficult to reach mario pool, the vicinity of mary pal at this point. they have been, according to reports, more than a dozen civilian casualties here in the city of the nit victims of fun directed find and the neighbourhood civilian neighborhoods. places where our weather, our apartment buildings and, and other houses. we have seen a, of course soon over ukraine, different reactions to this operation. there are certainly some is who have been happy to seize russian forces, but there, but they have also been those who have been less than happy to see again. russian troops advancing through through you crate on the whole with so far it is with the the got got the with the, the, the administrations of various villages and towns there has been contact. they have a been somewhat responsible have tried to fight to agree try to negotiate with
7:21 pm
russian forces about responsibilities, for example, about joint patrols with police being with police being kept up to speed and allow to do their job to prevent looting. for example, to prevent crime murders from taking place in the anarchy that is often left behind after military operations. there is, of course, also also the fact that the russian military has been keeping us up to date on it's statistics, which is how many various military infrastructure sites, objectives they have destroyed, which is at this point over a 1000 as well as the majority from what we understand of ukraine samples has been destroyed many huh. before being able to take off many jets, many got us before being able to take off in strikes, directed at airports and air fields and hangers, and other objects belonging assets belonging to the ukranian air force via west
7:22 pm
bank of the west bank of kia. this also said to be either the controller, the russian military. viv could the situation and care fees of course test, but made much more so after thought is there boosted that they had handed out almost 30030000 assault rifles, $10000000.00 rounds of ammunition, r. p g 's as well as grenades to the civilian population. we heard at 1st that only a passport was required than there was footage of people just coming up to the boxes and i'm trucks picking up guns by the dozen and leaving which has resulted in as we have seen on social media, get a verified footage. anaki in the, in the capital capital of ukraine. nevertheless, the russian side says that he's making rule assets to avoid civilian casualties, which, which includes a bad on bombing blog look at the solves as
7:23 pm
indiscriminately at cities, trying to keep will stripes. procedure strikes to military infrastructure sites and again have reiterated that they are offering ukrainian forces. those that don't, don't belong to nationalists to a neo nazi battalions. they're offering them a chance to surrender, that they will be treated with respect and allowed to return to their fabulous we're already seeing the effects from the ongoing violence rippling across the world. specifically, the energy sector has seen a jump and the result of these sanctions levied on russia. now, one pointed 8th, brent crude rose to as high as $105.00 a barrel. the west texas intermediate crude features reached above $99.00 per barrel. prices have since ease but some experts say the rise may still persist. the last time both contracts rose about around, excuse me, above a $100.00 as
7:24 pm
a barrel was in 2014 during the whole crimea situation. so joining us now to kind of discuss we have co host of boom bus christy i. christy, thanks so much for coming on. you know, given the ban on nordstrom to and large on investments in russia's oil and gas sector by foreign entities. what do you think we can expect to going forward? does this mean that russia will be more reliant on eastern bloc countries, specifically china? and do you think we'll see a massive spike in gas prices possibly higher than we're already seeing now? well, i will now sanctions on russia are not target energy markets for fear of disrupting very delicate oil and gas markets and causing a massive inflation spiral. so this is something that can change very quickly though, depending on if the officials are willing to escalate the situation. right now, the disconnection from swift announced on saturday is partial leaving room to escalate penalties later on. so the current sanctions will make it more difficult, but not impossible for russia to export energy and other commodities. so russia
7:25 pm
will likely become increasingly relying on china for trade going forward. and all these sanctions come into place, but it remains to be seen how much china is willing to help them. china will be willing to trade with russia so long that it is in their best interest to and they can source chief oil from them. right now, the aging has been very careful not to explicitly endorse nor condemn russia, because while it wants to trade with moscow, it also has its own domestic concerns and desire to retain a working relationship with europe. so right now to china's largest state own banks are restricting financing for the purchases of russian commodities. which underscore the limits of aging pledge to maintain economic ties with russia. so it may suggest some sort of back pedaling with recent sort of posturing alongside russia. and despite their efforts to limit the impact of the energy trade, the prices were already jumped by roughly 40 percent in the last 3 months over concerns of disruption. so prices are definitely spiky and on the rise already. so
7:26 pm
then christy, how long do you think europe could go without russian gas and oil? i mean, is this even possible? i think it would be very difficult for europe to survive without russian energy. seeing as europe trades, about 80000000000 euros with russia annually, which is 10 at the amount the u. s. does. so on average that you rely on russia for about 40 percent of its natural gas. and some countries are even more dependent than others. so europe can probably get by for a little while without russian energy, as there is storage since tension had begin building up. last year, european and work leaders have work to coordinate increased import the l. n. g liquefied natural gas from countries like us and cutter with spring the only a few weeks away, the region could make it through to autumn without shortages, even if the russian supplies were cut off. but in the meantime, europe options to reduce the need for russian gas are very, very limited. in the short term, l, a new shipments are helping right now,
7:27 pm
but you're may struggle to keep these imports at the current high levels once the cold weather and demand returns. you know christy really quick, 30 seconds what do you think the prospects of ever bringing back nord stream to your hearing? these politicians here say that it's hunger, steel at the bottom of the ocean as if it's just garbage. do you think it could actually ever get turned back on 30 seconds? i think it was a likely possibility, but that will be further down along the road right now in the near term that there's absolutely no possibility of that. but in terms of, in the future, who knows, because that is a significant amount of investment, a significant amount of infrastructure and a very significant amount of time dedicated to building this up. and right now, europe wants to roll out other alternatives to replace. it's dependent on russian natural gas, but those are not going to be ready for about a decade the or decade out past in terms of what will happen in 10 years. most likely your will have to resort back to it will leave it there. christy. i cause boom bus,
7:28 pm
thanks so much. if i wanna thank you folks for being with us tonight. we know you got a choice, a new so they for been here. good night. may the good news be yours? ah, there's so much going on in the world. don't you think was the last time you had a real birdseye view of the news be more than just hours and figuring give me 30 minutes. i'll take you off the glow. may your questions, berth new questions? number as stars, and endless as the sea. and bring you all in sight, distance, depth and more. lift your eyes to all that remains in question.
