tv Cross Talk RT February 28, 2022 11:00pm-11:30pm EST
11:00 pm
a good evening and welcome to the news on rti america. i'm fair in france. act bringing with the headlines from the rti america studios right here in our nation's capital. here's the headlines where you're digging deeper on. it's the 1st of its kind in 40 years and only the 11th emergency session and you and history. so what happens tonight at the united nations plus that special session puts china in the hot seat. why the united states is having a little bit over china's reaction to the situation and in ukraine. and finally, at the end of it all, it's all about the money. how the crisis in ukraine could affect the bottom line for every day americans. the news on our team. erica starts right now for are welcome you for being with us tonight in new york,
11:01 pm
the united nations general assembly met again to debate the crisis between russia and ukraine, reflecting widespread demands for a ceasefire along with escalating concerns for the millions of ukrainians. archie correspondent, caleb martin, tells us more we heard from russian ambassador na, ben z a, he's the permanent representative of russia to the united nations. then he took questions from reporters and he made a lot of very important points. one point he made was that zelinski, he was who was basically confronted by a reporter who said that, how can you say that there are nazis in ukraine when the ukranian president zalinski is jewish, to which the russian ambassador pointed out that zalinski doesn't seem to have the real power in the country, he took power on a platform of peace and bringing the country back together. however, at this point, at this point, zalinski has proved himself he's proved himself to be weak and have no real power.
11:02 pm
that was what was said by the russian ambassador and events. yep. and it appears the real power in, in ukraine is with the military and with nationalists forces and at the present really has no ability to control them. so simply pointing to zelinski is identity and heritage is being jewish to deny the reality of the as of battalion of the forces that are tearing down world war 2 memorials of the, you know, of the extreme anti russian and pro nazi sentiments. the torchlight marches for a step on bendara to point to zalinski heritage to deny all that is simply is simply a facade. now, he went on when confronted with allegations that, that russia bomb civilian areas. he told the reporters asking those questions to verify the reports because there's quite a bit of fake news going around. and there's quite a few videos videos that have come from places like syria or libya, videos from even video games that are being circulated and claimed and passed off as showing russian atrocities. he went on to say the russia did not bomb civilian
11:03 pm
areas in give. i made that point, so that's, that's the rush ambassador speaking to reporters in the un press briefing room. now this comes after debate that took place at the un general assembly hall that the un general assembly united states and its allies put forward a resolution before the un general assembly to condemn russia. now when that resolution was put forward, we 1st heard from the un secretary general after that we then heard from, from the representative of ukraine who thundered and made up heated allegations against russia compared to world war 2, et cetera. this is what we heard from the un representative of ukraine when he spoke at the general assembly hall. deadly air strikes dropped on civilians has across the entire country, and the russian troops crossed ukraine's boldest from the territory. old russia billers and the occupied bars of ukraine's dunbar and crimea. does it remind you of something, doesn't it?
11:04 pm
indeed, mary clia perilous could be drawn with the beginning of the 2nd the will will do. it was chosen by someone who is right now, sitting in the bunker. we know what happened with the person who sat in the bunker in berlin in may 1940 part. now it's also important to note that in the un general assembly hall in a bend, zia and russian ambassador had the opportunity to dissent. some of these allegations he got up and he talked about the need for negotiations. he talked about how this resolution that was put forward was not a pro ukrainian resolution, as it does not put any blame on the forces that instigated this conflict with their shelling and attacks on don atkin, lugens, and all as well as that. you know, their continued escalation threats of ukraine to join nato piling lethal weapons into ukraine. and from there he talked about the need to not believe everything
11:05 pm
circulating throughout mainstream media. a lot of the reports coming out of ukraine widely circulated in american media have been debunked. he pointed out that at this point, what is needed is negotiation. this is what the benzine said when speaking to the un general assembly hall presume will move them in more detail. okay? those to whom direct dialogue between key and the don't bass was needed. and however, this been getting more confirmation by the countries leadership, ethical grain is not ready for such dialogue. so i for taking steps to rhonda, don't bast specials out at us as provided by the men's agreements in the, in this convinced us that we simply have no right to make the residents of don bass sofa or video on those of wow, there was a lot of podium, pounding from the united states and its allies. this meeting of the general assembly did not really accomplish anything. this was a lot of smoke and mirrors and theatrics by allies of the united states in their
11:06 pm
efforts to demonize russia and obscure the real roots of the conflict. while much of the world stands united against russia's military operations in ukraine, china is taking a different approach on the issue. although not showing support for russia's actions, the asian superpower has made clear that it believes blame for the crisis does not end with moscow here. now is ortiz alex ma, highly batch as the worst plans to fin war weapons to ukraine. china is calling for diplomacy and restraint on all sides. montana has noticed the statements made by all parties on the new killer issue. i want to emphasize that on the issue of european security, reasonable security concerns of all countries should be paid sufficient attention. that after the continuous 5 rounds of each square expansion of nato, the legitimate appeal of russia out of its security concerns should be given attention. and approach properly through you all irrelevant parties should remain
11:07 pm
calm and exercise restraint. so as to further avoid escalation of the situation. russian president vladimir putin has the world on edge after putting his nuclear forces on increased alert means a movie can of many see is a major escalation of tensions, like with the u. s. and need to be honest, however date amongst other comments. so somehow forgotten that just a couple of months ago, pres nuclear talk was coming from the washington county in december g o p senator roger wicker, ross suggested that that us should consider launching a nuclear strike against russia to defend ukraine to china, has voiced its displeasure with all the rhetoric, when i want to affirm that china has always believed that no one can win a new cannon warm and no nuclear war can be fought. meanwhile, it's safe to say that while showing understanding for russia security concerns russia, beijing is not fully backing that countries actions in ukraine at a meeting of the united nations security council,
11:08 pm
instead of siding with russia all along with india and the united arab emirates will come china abstained from voting on a security council resolution, which was aimed at ending the war in ukraine. that said, china made it clear that it believes a true diplomatic i van by all parties involving deeply is the best path to resolve the issue. again, look in china supports equal foot, a dialogue between the you and russia on european security issues and upholding the principle of undivided security to eventually form a balanced, effective, sustainable european security mechanism. okay? when it comes to the multitude of sanctions against russia, china, as opposed to the measures, not only hasn't lifted restrictions on russian, we in ports to counter measure the efforts. but it has made multiple statements against the use of such penalties. to help with enter your china disapproved of using sanctions to solve problems. we are against unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law is all each of acts have long, proven the sanctions,
11:09 pm
but could not help solve problems which will create new one. so it's on sunday, the united nations security council voted for an emergency meeting of the a 193 member general assembly. right order to address the ongoing crisis, use behavior ukraine the world court for use on r t america. i'm alex mileage. well, the break it all down we are. and so by former pentagon official, michael maloof and independent journalist, ben norton gentleman, great to see about to night. michael, let's start with you. the fact that china called for diplomacy on the situation which is kind of a thing that i think anyone would want. why does the united states see it as such a threat? well, i think china, united states probably feels that china has basically taken sides with russia, but i thought it was interesting the way china came out with a, with its position. it was a 5 point position. and at the same time, it recognized something very, very critical. in spite of all of the a chaos that's going on right now, that,
11:10 pm
that is the idea of indivisibility. you don't increase the security of one site at the expense of the other. and indeed, there's a whole litany of a history and agreements that support that argument, all of which have been violated. and that's why russia is upset about it today. it doesn't believe in. and he pointed out that the nato has expanded at least 5 times . notwithstanding the fact that there were these assurances in these agreements, and i think that that's, that, that's notable. but it, but he did call for direct negotiations between the 2 countries. russia and ukraine ah, protects civilian life and a respect for territorial integrity, which i think, i think what china is trying to do is be, be the adult in the room and trying to position itself to be that of to be that adult. that other countries may gravitate toward to come to look for
11:11 pm
a referee. if you will bookmark that thought, then i want to say it is article it came out just before the week on head from the new york times saying that their anonymous sources say the by didn't administration, gave china intel on the russian true build up to deter them, china, those anonymous sources say, then turned around and gave this intel to russia. now we cannot independently confirm this, but it's interesting though, on the timing of this article been, is this the convenient you know, way to kind of get that hate snowball on china moving? absolutely. and we see an incredible extremely hypocritical and cynical strategy by the white house. they have been accusing china of genocide, imposing sanctions on china, saying that, you know, president, she is, is a bogeyman under americans beds. and then immediately they, they expect china to suddenly ally with the u. s. against its own ally,
11:12 pm
russia. this is a ridiculous policy and of course china is not going to ally with the country that is antagonizing that, that is accusing it ridiculously of, of genocide and others suppose a crime. so the reality is that the white house acts as though every other country in the world is just going to abandon its foreign policy and go along with whatever washington wants when it's convenient. but know, china and russia have a strategic partnership. and yes, it doesn't mean that china always 100 percent agrees with russian everything. but they understand that they have a mutual adversary, which is united states and china has repeatedly throughout not not just this conflict over ukraine, but for many years now has called for abandoning the cold war mentality. constantly . we hear from the chinese foreign minister when ye and other top diplomats, they constantly repeat that phrase, abandoned the cold war mentality. but unfortunately what we see from washington and also brussels is they keep pushing for new cold war. and not only are they pushing
11:13 pm
for a new cold war, they're actually accelerating the hot war right now. and ukraine by sending more happens to ukraine. the you is now sending warplanes to ukraine, so they really are, you know, we were talking about this narrative a few weeks ago of the us in the european union trying to fight until the last ukranian. well, it really looks like they're, they're trying to fight to the last ukranian and instead of pushing for diplomacy, they're trying to accelerate this is war, even more boring fuel on the fire with more weapons and we're warplanes. now an interesting parallel, i want to give you each kind of a minute to respond here. but you know, you have the situation with ty, one, the u. s. has also supplied taiwan with anything militarily that at once. but the difference is, is that if china were attack taiwan, americans don't know this, or many of them down the united states has a pack that it would go and fight for taiwan. we have this pack with taiwan, not with ukraine. prudent, his said is to demands, as you said before, michael,
11:14 pm
you know about not being a part of nato as far as ukraine and ukraine would. demilitarize. why do you think the u. s. has a pact with taiwan, but they're not doing the same for you crate. i'll get each 30 seconds mike. well, it's not. ukraine's not a part of nato. we had a separate agreement with taiwan that goes back many, many years. but there's a question of, of just what does that support mean? does that mean we're going to send in troops and that would be total suicide on the part of the us for that. and it more than likely means military assistance. but i also want to point out that the, that, that the united states regards russia and china as allies. and that, that they're going to criticize china equally because they do see this military alliance. but developing between russia and china, even though russia, even though china rather paper, is playing a cool and, and not not showing its hand, but there is cooperation. and i think that this is where the united states is
11:15 pm
trying to build that case of, of it's, you world order now being challenged by this new multi polar world order by russia, china that's emerging. and this is, and this is threatening to the non satta good guy. quick. 30 seconds you think side is the one that is going to be the adult in the room and saw that absolutely. china has been calling for diplomacy. and as i said, the u. s. in the you instead of pushing for diplomacy, they're trying to accelerate this war in ukraine. and it's the ultimate hypocrisy. i mean, this war is very tragic. there are the ones that pushed russia to militarily intervening . and now instead of trying to push or diplomacy, the e u and the u. s. are accelerating this war and ukraine. they say they don't want to warn ukraine than why are they sending more weapons? why are they sending warplanes? it's china, not united states, it's china and other responsible countries that are calling for diplomacy in a peaceful resolution to this conflict. michael opened norton great to have the both on as always. thank you. thank you. and so ahead we're going to get the latest
11:16 pm
on the ground and ukraine. 5 days since the fighting 1st began. we're going to check in with one of our own on the ground. stay tuned for that. and the meantime makes you download our portable tv app where you can catch everything from this show or any other one on this network. we've got live sports and a whole lot more. 247, the palm of your hand because it's tv as it should be. it will be right back with i like it when the host asked the question for the guest, and linda actually listened to the guess, answer, and then react to that answer. a folks dennis wheeler here, i've got a new show, the mainstream media, swarming with falsehoods, riddled with censorship,
11:17 pm
and under corporate control is incapable of truly informing its audience. it can't rise above the corrupt motives of those calling the shots. when you awaken to this fact turned to archie, america, where we dare to question morn. i seen the horrors utilize when money and evil combine corporate criminals who dress countless lives. they had just one more dollar to their billions. they threatened, they bribe, they'll do anything to keep their crimes in the door. but the people i've heard are demanding justice. their stories need to be told on america's lawyer for oh, dear newark. thank you for finally changing. i understand you're tired of
11:18 pm
network's templar noon with you. you're tired of commentary. ready i are not to say no matter what personally you know, mean. ready i'm famous for my views, you'll get them avenue. and yours truly, scotty now ah, back to our continuing coverage and the crisis in ukraine. we're going to bring you to the front lines that are teas more gasdio reporting from the eastern part of ukraine. the city of myra, you pull, which is ukraine's largest sport and ease ease. now almost surrounded with the garrison that is there. the russian side has said that it is nationalist elements that are putting up the stiffest resistance and the those units belonging to the
11:19 pm
regular military to regular formations, that they are choosing to negotiate. and in some cases, lay down their arms and return to their homes. but these are very difficult to verify this information at this time because then said developing too quickly. and because there also few reliable reports are close to the front lines where it is extremely dangerous. the situation there is that many roads have been mind. we have received reports from the city of dance, which is, i'm halfway between the crimea and mario book, which is at the axis of russia, the advance, which is, which is where you credit in units have planted in the city itself and in the outskirts minds for example, to, to surprise that the devastated advancing as it is very difficult to reach mario below the vicinity of mario pal. at this point. they have beat,
11:20 pm
according to reports, more than a dozen civilian casualties here in the city of the nit victims of fun directed fire into and the neighbourhood civilian neighborhoods. places where our weather, our apartment, buildings and, and other houses we have seen are of course soon over ukraine, different reactions to this operation. there are certainly civilians who have been happy to see russian forces, but there are. but they have also been those who have been less than happy to see again russian troops advancing through through you create on the whole with so far it is with the got got the with the, the, the administrations of various villages and towns that has been contract they have a been somewhat responsible have tried to fight to agree try to negotiate with russian forces about responsibilities, for example, about 2 and patrols with police being with police being tapped up to speed and allow to do their job to prevent looting. for example,
11:21 pm
to prevent crime murders from taking place in the anarchy that is often left behind after military operations. there is, of course, also also the fact that the russian military has been keeping us up to date on its statistics, which is how many various military infrastructure sites, objectives they have destroyed, which is at this point over a 1000, as well as the majority from what we understand of ukraine, sad force has been destroyed many before being able to take off many jets. but any got us before being able to take off in strikes, directed at airports and as heels and hangers and other objects belonging assets belonging to the ukrainian air force via west bank of the west bank of kia the. so set to be either the consoles of the russian military vehicles, the situation and care fees, of course,
11:22 pm
desperate made much more so off to authorities there. boosted that they had handed out almost 30030000 assault rifles, 10000000 rounds of ammunition, our p. jeez, as well as grenades to the civilian population we had at 1st only a possible it was required. that was footage of people just coming up to that the boxes and had trucks picking up guns by the doesn't and, and leaving, which has resulted in as we have seen on social media, get a verified footage anaki in the, in the capital capital of ukraine. nevertheless, the russian side says that he's making all efforts to avoid civilian casualties, which, which includes a bad on bombing blog, a rocket to me, solves as indiscriminately at cities, trying to people, stripes, procedure and stripes to our military infrastructure sites. and again, have reiterated that they are offering ukrainian forces. those that don't,
11:23 pm
don't belong to nationalists store neo nazi battalions. they're offering them a chance to surrender that they will be treated with respect and allowed to return to that fabulous. we're already seeing the effects from the ongoing violence rippling across the world. specifically the energy sector has seen a jump and the result of these sanctions landed on russia. now one pointed 8th, brent crude rose to as high as $105.00 a barrel. the west texas intermediate crude features reached about $99.00 per barrel. prices have since ease but some experts say the rise may still persist. the last time both contracts rose about around, excuse me, above a $100.00 as a barrel was in 2014 during the whole crimea situation. so joining us now to kind of discuss, we have co boom bus christy i, christy, they so much for coming on, you know, given the ban on north stream to and large developments in rushes,
11:24 pm
oil and gas sector by foreign entities. what do you think we can expect to going forward? does this mean that russia will be more reliant on eastern bloc countries? specifically china? and do you think we'll see a massive spike in gas prices possibly higher than we're already seeing now? well, as of now, sanctions on russia are not targeting energy markets for fear of disrupting the very delicate oil and gas markets and causing a massive inflation spiral. so this is something that can change very quickly though, depending on if the officials are willing to escalate the situation. right now, the disconnection from swift announced on saturday is partial leaving room to escalate penalties later on. so the current sanctions will make it more difficult, but not impossible for russia to export energy and other commodities. so rochelle likely become increasingly relying on china for trade going forward. as all these sanctions come into place, it remains to be seen how much china is willing to help them. china will be willing
11:25 pm
to trade with russia so long that it is in their best interest to, and they can source cheap oil from them. right now, beijing has been very careful not to explicitly endorse nor condemn russia because while it wants to trade with moscow, it also has its own domestic concerns and desire to retain a working relationship with europe. so right now, 2 of china's largest state own banks are restricting financing for the purchases of russian commodities. which underscore the limits of beijing is pledge to maintain economic ties with russia. so amazed to just some sort of back pedaling. with recent, a sort of pastoring alongside russia and despite their efforts to limit the impact of the energy trade, the price is, was already jumped by roughly 40 percent in the last 3 months over concerns of disruption. so prices are definitely spiking in on the rise already. so then christy, how long do you think europe could go without rushing gas and oil? i mean, is this even possible? i think it will be very difficult for you to survive with our russian energy.
11:26 pm
seeing as europe trades about 80000000000 euros with russia annually, which is 10 x the amount the u. s. does. so on average, the relies on russia for about 40 percent of its natural gas. and some countries are even more dependent than others. so europe can probably get by for a little while without russian energy, as there is storage since tension had begin building up. last year, european work leaders have worked to coordinate increased in ports of l. n. g liquefied natural gas from countries like us and cutter with spring being only a few weeks away, the region could make it through to autumn without shortages, even if russian supplies were cut off. but in the meantime, europe options to reduce its need for russian gas are very, very limited. in the short term, l and d, shipments are helping right now, but europe may struggle to keep these imports at the current high levels, once the cold weather and demand returns. you know christy really quick, 30 seconds, what do you think the prospects of ever bringing back nord stream to your hearing? these politicians here say that it's
11:27 pm
a hunk of steel at the bottom of the ocean is if it's just garbage. do you think it could actually ever get turned back on 30 seconds? i think it is unlikely possibility, but that will be further down along the road right now in the near term. there's absolutely no possibility of that. but in terms of in the future, who knows, because that is a significant amount of investment, a significant amount of infrastructure and a very significant amount of time dedicated to building this and right now, europe wants to roll out other alternatives to replace its dependence on russian natural gas, but those are not going to be ready for about a decade or a decade out at best. all right, so low in terms of what will happen in 10 years, most likely your will have to resort back to it will leave it there. christy. i cause the boom bus, thanks so much. and that's our newest folks. we know you have a choice when it comes to where you get your news, so thanks so much for being here. good night. may the good news be yours? ah
11:28 pm
