8:30 pm
why didn't know on portable tv, ah, ah, ah, president abiding address is the nation in his 1st state of the union, hoping to inspire a political reset at home. and while there are multiple issues domestically which could be addressed, the president has revised his speech to put a spotlight on the russian ukrainian conflict. but that does not mean the current economic situation, as well as the nomination of catan g brown. jackson will not also begin in time. however, like with every state of the union, it's not only what the president and his team choose to focus on, but sometimes is also what is not said, which can be just as important. this is why i brought in some of the best voices here at r t r t america to analyze the speech, how it is received,
8:31 pm
and the message president biden is hoping to send, not only to the country, but also i've got, you know, he is in your watching our special coverage of the 2022 state of the union with america is back. ah. all eyes are on the capital tonight as president joe biden is getting ready to make his 1st state of the union address. and we are joined by our expert panel here in the studio tonight. we have robert patillo talk radio host, civil rights attorney, boom bust co host a, rachel blevins, beth. good journalists have been sworn in the lake until conservative commentator. and finally, and we are going to, we are surrounded by experts tonight, but before the president speak, take
8:32 pm
a look at this 1st year of the bite of presidency. now it is 1st state of the union address, present by no will be attempting to reassure anxious americans that the country is strong. bizarre to correspond at natasha suite reports. this may be more of a challenge that he thinks that's why it's connie convincing. the american people may be more difficult than the president anticipates, when you remain frustrated and simply exhausted over the, to your pandemic. not to mention rising inflation and gas prices as well as chaos exploding overseas. joe biden quick to criticize former president trump war on the campaign trail back in 2020. anyone is responsible for that many dish should not remain as president of the united states of america and won't bite and spoke of united americans on inauguration day last year. his actions when you're later, are in question about this is a mergers day. this is democracy's day,
8:33 pm
a day of history and hope of renaud and resolve from mass mandates to an attempted vaccine mandate. americans became more divided than ever. when it came to coven, i won't much of the mainstream media was supportive of biden's policies. questions arose when he appointed vice president, kamala harris to oversee the plaguing border issues. as searches of migrants came flooding to the u. s. border. however, she continued to not visit the border and only scheduled one after trump announced that he would be visiting the border with texas governor greg abbott. but the actual criticism for biden, from all sides of the aisle amped up over his decision to abruptly pull american troops from afghanistan, which resulted in a taliban takeover. it was timed and this for and now some analysts say we can expect a more vocal precedent in the coming year. harvard avenue, these choir conversations with members of congress for the last 2 months. i've talked to be quiet. biting also said his administration plans to fully support nato territory. as i made crystal clear,
8:34 pm
the united states will defend every inch of nato territory with the full force of american power. and the good news is native was more united and more determined than ever by day. it is also expected to continue to push his style of economic spending agenda and bell, his strategies for tackling inflation and crime, as well as honoring his pick and 1st black woman to be nominated to the supreme court at 79 years old, biting ranks as the oldest president of the united states long before his decision about afghanistan, critics abide and also questioned his mental fitness for office. a new pull from 8 me see news, and the washington post found that biden's approval rating had dropped to 41 percent most exciting their frustration with the economy reporting from los angeles and hot sweets, r t. now regardless of who is in office, a, someone is unhappy about their polity policies guaranteed. but this year's protest is not just a simple gathering of people outside the white house or the capital. and this is
8:35 pm
where we find our t america's own paxton brown, who is supposed to be out there with the freedom convoy, a large group that was traveling across the country into d. c. but it's been a little different than what was expected. paxton, you're on the ground. what are you seeing right there outside the capital? oh, great time, he's got he right now. the president's presidential motorcade is coming by as he makes his way to the united states capital of course, to night. security as of the utmost importance, that tall black fencing surrounding the u. s. capital is back in the same fencing we saw in the days and weeks after january 6th, 2021. please say it is temporary, it's here because of the state of the union address and plant protests and truck convoys that were scheduled to take place in the area over the next several days. now there are road blockages all around here. as you can see, that is customary. but what is new this year? are hundreds of national guard members coming here to assist with air and traffic
8:36 pm
control. now that's on the outside. what's going on on the inside. different safety protocols because of coven, coven tests are required here to night. all members of the house chamber will have to submit a covert test and test negative. no guests are allowed inside the house chamber to night. members of congress will not be allowed to bring any one inside and masks are not required, but they are recommended scotty, all in on a different look of war. what a very on traditional look as far as you know, coping restrictions, social distancing, and safety precautions here to night. a very untraditional look for a traditional custom here in the united states, the state of the union address, scotty will back to my find to be interesting. originally we sent you out there because there was this convoy of trucks and supposedly that they are still supposedly coming at some point. but after the president's speech, did you see any of that conway present today? any your travels around washington dc, preparing for tonight. i have not seen
8:37 pm
a single truck. i know the freedom usa convoy that was scheduled to make its way here from california. dissipated along the way or organizer. kyle seth check took the twitter of the last couple days to say that those members broke off to join other larger convoys that were making the way here to washington dc. i have not seen a single truck here. kyle, self check did hold on. he applied for a, a permit to hold a protest at the national mall. he was expecting hundreds of people to show out only a handful of people did. he did express express his displeasure with that and said he did plan to go through with all of these scheduled protests here today. well, there you go back to me. well, thank you so much for being out there and will probably catch you later on tonight at now there is a, a lot of material the president could cover tonight. so a, what will he choose? and how much will he be devoted to the past versus the future?
8:38 pm
have my own ideas, but let's get 360 view of tonight's speech and inter day and continue to talk with our panel, keeping it here at home. let's look at how the people are responding to president's 1st year and office in earlier today pack to was covering the truckers. com by protest of supposed to happening back to the mandates. tucker's frustrations were they warranted? i'm gonna actually start with you on the lake on this because the americans, there are frustrations. there was frustrations when trump was an office where they warranted to a cab, some sort of a frustration going into president biden's 1st year following it. well, i can start out talking about frustration in that my 15 minute ride here took about 45 minutes because the. busy city had essentially blocked off access to downtown because they were expecting the truckers now i come from an area on the side of se dc where truckers normally would be and i can say i only saw cars. i didn't see any trucks or anything like that. but i do think that there obviously is some frustration in the country and it's not really what you're seeing now with the
8:39 pm
truckers. a new is an extension of what we've actually seeing with people around the country. initially, what was happening is, is that democrats were doing a very good job in mainstream media as well as characterizing this frustration as this is emblematic of conservatives or the republican party. there was so much focus on rick scott versus i mean i'm sorry i'm run to santa's versus andrew cuomo . remember earlier on in the crisis. and i think what we see now with the truckers is that it's really coming to a head and with so many states now essentially rescinding their mandates. you can actually dep, you can definitely say that the talkers have a point, but they haven't gotten to dc. it and i'm not sure when they're supposed to go well, they'll get her at some point, but she had the reason why they were purchasing were these vaccine and passport mandates. it gets about been the magically expired as of midnight. some say this shows the rules of the past or more about politics and then science. how do you see it? so i think that's certainly true. but i also think that if the truckers accomplish
8:40 pm
anything canadian truckers or us truckers, it was that i believe they hurried up the end of those mandates. whether they be mass mandates or vaccine mandates. why? because no governor and an election year wants to be there to say we had mandates in place then truckers showed up started shutting things down, frustrated us and then we acted as a result of that. instead, it looks a whole lot better in electron season to say they things look better. now let's go ahead and start lifting and their lifting the math mandates for schools. that's obviously happening. blue states, whether it be michigan or new jersey. it's the, the mandate for workers are going away. we're seeing it lifted pretty much across the board, which kind of leaves in a position if you're a trucker right now where you'd say. so what are you protest if you get to washington dc and you shut down the streets until when? because on the mandates are going away well and that's the thing. so robert, as a democrat, you know, obviously the mid term they say that's the referendum for voters. there is a democrat, we like to look at our own house 1st. has present bite actually fulfilled your expectations for his 1st year office, considering everything he came into,
8:41 pm
what lowest old issue of the of the truckers and the convoy a one of the sillies protest i've seen because they were protesting a mandate that didn't exist because it or had been struck down by the supreme court weeks beforehand, and then on the then when they say, well, we're going to shut it down to, i guess, get rid of the other things you have to look to was happening at the same time from the omar kron spike that happened in early january of the number to we're seeing currently are 40 the splits 50 percent reductions and infections. we're seeing a hospital bed being opened back up our seas not being overrun. so when you follow the science along with that, the cdc guidance is going along with the numbers and august, and that becomes political because of what happens. i think we've all the numbers, that's what gets gets you to the point that you're at. now, with regards to biting 1st year in office, i think almost any progressive or liberal across the board will say that he failed his 1st year. if you go from the lofty rhetoric, which is promise during the campaign season, you know, we thought we were going to be getting a climate change bill that were wanting to be investing in electric vehicles that
8:42 pm
were going to have george flo justice and policing at would have the john those voting rights that would have the 40 people that would have this entire list of agenda items that got 81000000 people to turn out. but then we spent about 6 months in this country, arguing between jo, mansion and christian cinema, whether or not they will support a. ready bill back better bill, which was a complete waste of the 1st year because they were never going to bend on that no matter what you gave them. so i mean by don't have to have to make a more vocal more steadfast approach going into your number to having to be tough to go a long way towards articulating exactly what the, what he's going to do to overcome the parts in gridlock. which is this currently, and you mentioned the fact that our plan, rachel, we're going to start with you right after the break, where we're talking inflation. a lot of it has to do with the economics of the situation. stay right there. you're watching r t america is that coverage of the state of the use
8:43 pm
the gas, the corporate paris. i didn't power to day. my think their control will continue forever. whether they're right or wrong. we have to keep fighting question more. here you are. thank you for finally changing that. you know, i understand you're tired of networks that are new with view you're tired of common no matter what the only thing you know me. ready i'm famous for my views, you'll get them and the news and. ready yours truly. ready scotty now marked ways, and it's easier to fool people than to convince them they've been fools. that could
8:44 pm
be why america is so divided because people have been fed fake news paid for like corporate interests. they beat you down until you believe their fairy tales. well, here's a story, it's called a big and it's full of fats. mitchell with ah, america is back. ah, welcome back to our special coverage of the state of the union. we are waiting the president to take the podium that meanwhile with record high inflation rates,
8:45 pm
u. s. economy, it will take center stage in present, but instead of the unit speech. so how was the economy doing under president biden during his 1st year of this administration? well, a john had, he takes a closer look are you better off than you were 4 years ago, it was the question then governor ronald reagan posed to voters during the 1980 presidential debate. reagan, of course, would go on to win the election, but his question would be repeated during other presidential election since then, and a little over year into the biden administration. many american voters may be asking themselves the same thing, according to the us bureau of labor status 6 over the 12 months from january, 2021 to january, 2020 to the consumer price index for all urban consumers the c p u row 7.5 percent. it's the largest 12 month increase since $982.00 food prices increase
8:46 pm
7 percent over the past year. energy prices rose 27 percent. while recent polls show most americans disapprove of the way president biden is handling the economy. the president maintains his administration is responsible for record job and economic growth. the white house reports during his 1st year in office to enlarge part to the american rescue plan. entrepreneurship and business investment rebounded. the economy achieved its fastest job growth in american history. the fastest economic growth in nearly 40 years and a faster recovery than every other advanced economy. the white house is pre state of the union. fact, she goes on to read that in the last year, the economy added $375000.00 manufacturing jobs and companies. and now it's nearly $200000000000.00 and investments for semi conductor electric vehicle battery and critical mineral production and manufacturing in the united states. the unemployment rate, meanwhile dropped to 4 percent. and back in january the u. s. recorded 6600000 new
8:47 pm
jobs since january 2021 marking the strongest 1st year in job gains of any president since 1939. still inflation is at the highest level. it's been in decades and many americans continue to feel the economic pinch due to higher fuel and food prices and a b c. news. washington post poll shows biden has only a 37 percent approval rate with americans who are quote, twice as likely to say they're worse off than better under his presidency. but opinion polls don't determine elections. what generally does to quote former democratic strategist, james carville. it's the economy, stupid for r t john, honey. well, let's take a live look at the inside of the capital, where we are all the countries awaiting president biden. we did see his motorcade on the way, but before he takes the podium, i want to get a few more word from our expert panel where you have reached out to you on this. so
8:48 pm
this is your area of expertise these days. how do you just gave us this run down on how inflation has impacted the everyday american since by and took office? what is the average american looking for tonight and president biden speech to know that the better days are ahead? well, in some ways they may be looking for some reassurance, but then you have to ask yourself, is there anything binding can do at the moment? because we're in a situation where we're facing inflation at 40 year high as he noted, which means that americans are paying more all across the board. and it's interesting because even though binds likely to come out and he's likely to talk about jobs, jobs, jobs. we also have to remember that he is comparing 2021 to 2021. americans were getting laid off in record numbers. and so if you're the average american sitting at home watching the state of the union address right now, looking at his approval rating, you're probably relating it to what you're seeing at the grocery store, the prices that you're having to spend all around. and exactly how you're struggling and probably don't want to hear as much about all those jobs that you're
8:49 pm
likely to talk about tonight, which every president does, you know, malay, many of blame the stimulus checks as a car contributing factor for this inflation and people not wanting to actually return to work at the end of the pandemic. do you think by and actually chance off the foot gave out one to may stimulus checks to cause this problem? no, i actually, i won't criticise because, you know, keep in mind it started under trump. and so i understand that in crises such as this, such as the pandemic governments end up doing things in some ways they may end up over correcting. so i'll give the federal government a pass on the stimulus checks because the american people were saying this is what we want. and remember with that 1st stimulus package, there were so many strings that weren't attached to it. everybody got a stimulus check, and so there were no restrictions on it. but i think the difficult thing about joe biden here is a similar thing to what happened when donald trump was in office in 2020, dealing with the pandemic. the realities of what people are feeling and seeing
8:50 pm
a lot of that anxiety built up into the built up in the angst against trump. because when we went to the, you know, stores earlier on in the pandemic. this was the 1st time we actually had to deal with empty shelves. we could not get hand sanitizer, we could not get toilet paper, we couldn't get many of the basic things that people need. and so whatever biden says tonight, he still has to deal with the realities of what people are feeling and what people are filling is what motivates them to go to the polls. and that's why you made an excellent point. there's actually not very much a key personally can do about it, but he's president. and so he's going to end up taking the burden of the criticism . and it's really interesting cuz that's a year we started. he has real empty shelves. the, such as your traditional items a year after going into the holiday. when we saw those empty shells happened, ben going to the grocery store. if you click it, groceries, you know, hit a very dramatic increase and it's continuing to skyrocket. macro mentioned gas prices as well. eggs, pastas, fruit, and veggies, jumping in price. this is every day items. you have the bare shelves are just
8:51 pm
a part of the issue. supply chains continue to hot workers want things to move. what needs to be done? what can the president do in this case, if anything, to ease this so there's a couple of things. first of all, you know, we talk about inflation, 40 or highs. absolutely, but it's actually a lot higher than what's being reported right now. so when we talk about inflation, it's only going to get worse because a lot of it has to do with energy, right? so gas prices are already high. we know that we have the situation with ukraine right now, which means that speculations also going to drive prices even higher prices for gas go up. what does that mean? it means that all those goods that go to the store that are more expensive, get even more expensive because the cost to get them there goes up, right? so it's, it's this cyclical nature of making things more expensive. what can the president? well, one thing he do, he's not going to do, he could do tonight is he couldn't talk about opening up federal lands, gas leases on those lands, drilling. he could talk about all that tonight. remember the oil market is a speculative market. what does that mean? it means it doesn't have to happen tomorrow, as jim saki keep saying that it does,
8:52 pm
it doesn't. you just have to say we're going to do this and the market reaction says ok, who they're going to go back to practice. they're going to start that again. and so the market reacts to that news president is not going to say that instead, he's going to say we're going to open up about 500000 barrels from the strategic petroleum reserves, which is about one day's worth of oil coming from russia. it doesn't do anything for us, so he's going to talk about that, but it doesn't resolve anything, so prices continue to go up. ok, so robert, how does the present tonight address the rising gas prices? it comes down to the price of milk, eggs, and gas. how did you deal with the gas for a couple things? one presidents don't control gas prices or inflation. the reason we know this is that if presidents controlled that death will be to stamped and inflation will be 0 . and there was a magic wand that they could use to adjust that. but one thing president vitamin has to do is look, connect this to the long term future of america. because you can either tack it on the supply side has been pointed out again, attack it on the demand side. we're late this back to the green, new deal. we were like those better to build that better plan. we are investing in
8:53 pm
the types of battery technology, long range, electric vehicles, charging stations, solar, wind, electric power, the, the energy sources of the 21st century. well then now we are free from brush up for the entire of the rest of humanity. we never have to fight another war for oil in the middle east for the rest of the human history. and not does that. we don't have to destroy our environment with pipelines and drilling and artic land. i'm fracking where your water kept on fire a couple weeks later, there's underground collapses in these tunnels. we avoid all of that, but simply investing in the energy towards the future. there's a reason why the new mustang is electric. the new home v is electric. kids want careful, they don't want 18 wheel diesel trucks because that's what the future is and don't needs to concentrate in on how we address the demand side and transition to a green economy of the future. we are waiting on job by the entering will breaking at that point, but i just want to ask you a question that are we actually ready technologically, at this point, considering gas prices are possibly gonna be up to $7.00 a gallon for that type of advancement. right now,
8:54 pm
can you actually say green you down deal sounds great. so does unicorns and cupcakes free for all? is it of reality that we can handle the problem? situation right now, there is a reason that go to companies like g m ford, chrysler tests or have invested billions in green cars and electric cars for the future. we have to put the investments into charging station for the same amount of time. it will take to bring fracking back or to build a new pipeline, or to open up our alaskan lands to drilling the time they will try to get those on board is less than time it'll take to ramp up the electric harper production and battery production. this country, so i think we already fort technologically. if you remember back about 15 years, personal obama, we invest a lot of money in cylindrical. he wouldn't new a new caps on the missions he made it were. there were limits on the mile per gallon for cars and conservative. got so angry about that, but that is what set the way and paved the road for tesla for the electrical revolution that we have right now. government investments to day payoff for
8:55 pm
children tomorrow can just say one quick ad about another. i think what when rob are saying is true, and by the way, i don't want anybody to think that i'm, i'm advocating for the keystone pipeline that has been pipelines back. maybe i'm not calling for that, but listen in terms of what he could do, he wouldn't have to restart all pipelines, just renew the leases that expired when he came into office because he let those leases expire. he didn't allow me to continue. but the other issue was this, that in terms of the grid that we have right now, we couldn't support that right now. california is already starting to ask an electric car owners and obviously the whole state is not driving an electric cars, electric car owners to stop charging their cars overnight because it's draining the grid too much. we don't have a grid that can actually get support that i agree with you. absolutely. we should probably get there at some point and you have to build towards it. but we're talking about decades into the future to get to that point. and so what do you do about the, the, the parent right now, who can't afford to put food on their table or the family that says, hey, listen, i'm not getting a pay raise like the cost of everything's going up, but i'm not making more money than i was before those issues today have to be dealt
8:56 pm
with. they can't just be a strategy of what are we doing at the best point, is that why the build back better plan which should have been passed because that supposedly had infrastructure and it would, that have brought it in, is that cheer the dental? i didn't advocate for them, so most of us realize it a president, particularly in their 1st year. you get one bite at the apple with obama. it was actually the affordable care act with tromp, i think. and he got the 2000 the, the tax cuts, the job tax goes of 2017. so biden is actually in book keeping with the rest of presidents as far as what he's able to get. but the thing is, is that they over promised the over promised in on to deliver it. so you had joe biden initially talking about all of these things and keep in mind there was a word game to the use. and i was criticizing a, at the time when they talked about human infrastructure that actually where they went wrong because you had a trick because then you had to explain the difference between human infrastructure and traditional infrastructure which are like your roads and bridges. a lot of the
8:57 pm
things that are part of the big, what they did, they shift it from human infrastructure and then just started calling it bill back better. but if he had started with bill back better, instead of trying to threat the needle, explaining what a human infrastructure is, they probably would have more support. but because of the way that they chose to do it with the senate parliamentarians saying that they could not do it through the budget reconciliation process. that's why they put all. busy of these different things together in i think that biden does have a chance before it's 2024 of getting bits and pieces of the bill back better plan pass. so it's not dead, but you just can't usher in all of this change within the 1st year. we got 30, i think joe biden had the president has just walked in. but real quick, get 30 seconds truly. i think that's fair to say. and we're one year and you know, there's only so much you can do, but certainly he's going to be pointing to those campaign promises. and he's going to have a lot of americans pointing right back to that 5 dollar gallon per gallon. gas that we're seeing and right on the top of americans minds, do they care more about what they're paying in the grocery store or about future
8:58 pm
