just outside crim and naya danger lurks around every tree. what used to be one of ukraine's national parks is now one of the most heavily contested swigs of land and the don bass. and he didn't want him to have the ukrainian forces cross the river and their mobile units show our checkpoints. our intelligence identified some of their strongholds here. their main tactic is to attack, so they mostly work in mobile groups. artillery is useless here. walking single file, we follow the only path deemed safe towards russia's positions. with our guide leads us to what looks like a long abandoned hut, but the 1st impression of desolation is deceiving. inside we meet russian soldiers from the mortar, battery hidden in the thicket. not far from here. this is our battalions command and observation point, but we gather all the information about the targets and our battalions frontline.

we decide what targets to attack with our mortars. i mm. with globally, this move is to quench any attempts of the ukrainian forces to cross the forest that is surrounding all of us. oh, what you see here is the equivalent of close quarter combat in the world of artillery. this mortar team is only about 2,

and the sense of danielle is being shelves by ukrainian forces. and the important story to realize is that they are intentionally shelling civilians are markets around the area. i think the boss stations of bodies in the streets use huffs or you sense was hit the other day with her 4 people were killed. and it's very difficult to see any military targets antoniette scott civilian areas. ukraine is trying to, sometimes it target administration buildings. sometimes they, they often target. so infrastructure like energy infrastructure schools, sometimes just random shelling. so what do you think this is so under reported in the western media, johnny? well, i think that's, that's the reason a news happens where the journalists are, i think there's been no mainstream outlets from british or american companies that have occasionally been french, german, italian. but any mainstream of what is a little is a lot of fantastic, mainstream, honest reporters working for mainstream channels in western countries. and if any of them were there living under the shelling avenue,

the u. s president goes out of his way, agreeing on multiple deals at an ongoing summit with african nations in an attempt to court the continent. that's as washington seeks to recover, influence in the region as the continent seeks new partnerships with china and russia. please now for a long time that after success and prosperity is essential to assuring a better future for all of us. not just for africa, united states is all in on africa's future. we're still grappling with the deadly pandemic facing down war and instability address in economic challenges with global impact fighting, fighting, rising food prices, tackling the impacts of climate change. we can't solve any of these challenges without african leadership at the table. and i'm not trying to be nice. that's a fact. let's cross live now to our correspondence. horrible at thought le

bite and made several references to the global importance of africa. what is behind is timing an increased focus on the continent? well, as expected, the president of the united states and this, the joe biden made a push for africa support to considering the votes him block that sub saharan africa, in particular holes in the united nations general assembly. and that relationship between africa and the united states. the seemingly more complicated than ever, even as this trip happens, because african leaders who went to the united states who i am the white house, who, who listen to the president, a train to engage with issues they deem as a priority, as opposed to issues of morality and judgment that the united states has literally led the continent with every se, then to the countries in africa that i'm more concerned about their high dead re

payments. they are high interest rates that are being chased by west thin banks. and, you know, put for your managers and such, but that is not a priority for the united states. what seems to be a priority is a focus and a push on issues of health on the continent. investment in true food aid as well as the green energy agenda. those are not top priority for the african continent. and the polarizing part of course, remains the united states push against the entry of moscow and beijing into the african continent. what they seem to conveniently forget is that in the last 11 years or so that the united states has left a void on this continent. it is china and moscow that stepped up engagement with the continent that started having some, it's with
1:18 am
a regular scheduled rather than rather than once in 8 years, which the united states seems to be heavy. and it's upon their push that they're trying to hold back. it almost feels as if america is trying to re assert it's hedging many over africa while pinning it. and that is thumb and making sure that it's consistently while food programs and their investments on the continent remain rather not in something that would catch your eye rather. and they were supposed to, for instance, chinese investments which are really very big the, they build the roads that americans lend on here the, they build the hotels that american sleep, or the year they build the airports that the americans use on the continent. and for african leaders, they are almost in the white house for their own agenda, like i said, this seeking solutions to their own problems. but also they are trying to devoid themselves of most of,
1:19 am
of washington's morality and his finger wagging about human rights record than about democracy and what they should and should not do. and hence, that's the difference between what you get see in a chinese investment, which generally comes without any pre conditions. l american investment, which is not as big as the chinese investment would be, but the conditions attached to it make it a very difficult proposition for african leaders. but i thought that what was more interesting was the american defense chief, who really came out without any any doubt and really aiming straight the influence of russia in china. and he says that they could potentially have a d, stabilizing effect on africa. something that's not universally agreed by african leaders. let's hear more from us defense. or he were witnessing the piazza expand its footprint, ah, in a on, on a continent on

a daily basis. and that creates problems that will be eventually destabilizing, if they're not already a we see russia continuing to paddle cheap weapons, employing mercenaries across the continent. and so the combination of those activities by those 2 countries, i think i'm, that bears watching. and certainly i think their influence again, can be the stabilize is amazing what the u. s. defense she conveniently forget about at least the need for lead mission in africa and even the extent to which the americans are focused on the security on the continent . well, establishing and number of endless military bases for the drones, for the war ships and just military bases are in general without necessarily providing their promised security of the ability to the continent did was under the

obama administration bed. the united states really wrecked havoc on north africa and they've said of a litany of insurgents. as we've seen, the hardest movement grow, even stronger within the se, hell region in africa, that was all started by the toppling of the get down feed government and killing of mom on that as somebody who was seen as symbolic leader in africa and somebody who aged in continuously supported the idea of the united states of africa. and for some reason, mom and that fee represented a threat to the west that he had to be taken out that way. but unlike ukraine, when most of the aid the seems to be going from the united states perspective, and african leaders are watching this. and this is among the, the more private conversations that they're having with the administration of joe biden to say, hey, you've never responded to our problems with that kind of visit ferocity with that

kind of investment in terms of the quantum of money that you put up towards ukraine, the united states as part of this, is part of the summit, for instance, is promising to invest $55000000000.00 in africa over the next 30 years. they've already committed 60000000000 dollars this year alone to ukraine, and they're still urging congress for more money, some $40000000000.00 that the still wants to, to assign to ukraine. that is something that is not going down well with african states and it hasn't found favor. and it's very difficult for african meters to choose between, between beijing and washington when they look at the quantum of that investment. and the united states seems to be almost pro, actively looking at the situation as a diplomatic war, if not already a cold war and african shores. and china is refusing to go down that way. instead,

being the responsible superpower that is becoming and this is how they refunded to the defense chief from the united states. winter war miyoshi hote, the u. s. could view china africa cooperation with an open mind. africa is not an arena for big power game. so let alone the target of arbitrary prussia from any country or person. washington should respect the world, the african people, and take concrete actions to help africa's development instead of concentrating its efforts on smearing and attacking other countries of fight seems to be intensifying as america. once it's hedging money back, but even within that, that even within that, that dynamic america seems to be, you know, contradicting itself. speaking about, you know, democracy and openness and accountability while supporting for instance, the government of equitorial jenny, which only recently heads the ruling party when some 95 percent of the votes there
1:24 am
. it doesn't really bode well for the said democracy in africa. and debt is the treacherous path that the united states will have to trim our teeth, corolla, toddler, thank you. now, let's get back to our story. in germany, we're a member of the countries main opposition party has proposed the creation of a committee to control the spread of so called russian media propaganda. i'm now joined live with tv anchor and social activists to hear a shahid welcome to the program. what do you make of a proposal? thank you for coming on and what do you make of the proposal to create a rush and media propaganda committee? well, i think this isn't right. it's against the very fundamentals of, you know, freedom of speech and freedom of expression. and the west has always propagated and
1:25 am
stood for freedom of speech. and it always, you know, upholds this, that everybody should be allowed to have an opinion of their own. and to also shabby opinion, it is up to the audience and of us to decide themselves what they want to choose out of it by doing something by taking such measures where you actually trying to control the kind of information that you're giving across. you're probably, you know, kind of confusing the view as, as to what does in this information that it's being held back. and why should they only be getting one point of view? i think in today's world, when we have the web and we have, you know, everything is out there in the open it, there should be information from all sorts of services. and then it is up to the audience to decide themselves what they think is more relevant is more correct in their opinion. because news, you know, and journalism it should not be held back, journalism should not be defined or be a property of certain, of a certain mindset alone. it can, it is open to, you know, everything, everybody should be, should have
1:26 am
a right to say. and just like the west always stands for it, they always say that everybody has a right to come out and express what they feel is, right. so they should not be holding back. or, you know, because of any political differences that they may have, or there might be some issues. but this does not mean in any way that they can cub journalism or actually have a channel. or, you know, as a news agency shut down just because it does not resonate with their narrative or with their point of view, everybody is entitled to their own point of view. and everybody is entitled, as the audience, as a universal global citizen, out there to decide to listen to view and decide what they want to follow. so i personally think that this isn't a right way, and it's actually an attack on journalism worldwide. and everybody, everybody, all the anchors, older journalists everywhere up there should be open to all sorts of channels from every sort of far you know, country. but so that we get all sorts of mindsets out there. if there should be not
1:27 am
just one narrative, what, what we might call propaganda might be, might not be a propaganda and somebody else's view. and what we think is propaganda would be right for them. so, you know, we're nobody to sit and decide this. we should leave it to the audience. there are there, you know, they're intelligent enough. they're smart enough. they watch the thing and they decide because there's so many other channels. we saw it during the days of co it. we saw it even before that during the us elections as well. that's cnn spoke another story. fox news spoke another story and different channels to give their own narrative. even over here we have like, different channels. for example. yeah, i have, i has another words and another has another, wasn't completely g o has another, wasn't to offer. but the thing is, when you offer a number of opinions, you offer a number of perspective, the audience, the audience that is watching you is intelligent enough, is smart enough to derive out of it. what is right and what is not, and how authentic is a piece of information and it is not for us to pick up a certain piece of information a. so a certain source and to actually promote another. i think it should be all out
1:28 am
there out and be open for everybody to absorb and, and to judge on their own with their own free mind as to which you know which narrative do they think that resonates with them. and we cannot actually say that somebody else is defining what we want to perceive it's out there and it's up to us to perceive what we feel is right. and what do you think the issue of russian propaganda, in particular really quickly is so such a hot topic for european officials and european media actually, you know, if something is out there and they feel that it is going against what they want the people to believe they're obviously going to make efforts to curb it. they want the information out there to be available to the global public in a certain way that they wanted presented on for. it's very unfortunate. it used to be said that, you know, this is the 3rd generation warfare. public opinion,
1:29 am
both count and people are actually going to shape public opinion. but that's not true. you cannot shape public opinion by enforcing just one sort of ideas on to you . perhaps because russian, you know, because russian or for an exam, for instance, chinese, or even, you know, salvation, anything that goes against what they're saying becomes a threat to them so much so that even the cutter, fifo woke up, for instance, has so much of resistance. why? because it does not resonate with the, with the kind of ideas they want to put forward, or they want to show to the public and show and show the world that this is the truth. when people out there come here or see things, for instance, they know that the reality is often very, very different from what is being portrayed. and now anybody who fears that somebody else can change the mind that the others, if somebody who's trying to change the mind themselves. so i think basically if they are out there and they're ok, for example, if i'm wearing black, then i have, i don't have to fear that anybody can tell somebody else or convince the other person that i'm wearing red because i know i'm bearing like nobody can make them
1:30 am
see me as red. so that way if they are saying the truth and they're confident about it, they need not fear anybody else for that matter. russia or anybody else, whatever they might be saying, because everybody out there knows and can see for themselves that what is it those the says an emission is a certain news that's going out there. they have the mind, they have the understanding to understand that. okay, this is the piece of news. i'm seeing it without the subtitles, i'm seeing it, but that the audio with this is what i make of it. then i hear the audio of do 3 different channels and i had 23 different words. and then i with my own thinking, you know, judge whatever it is, this is what journalism should be. this is, wasn't news reporting should be all about. and i don't think any one thought of the word, whoever it maybe has the right to control the kind of information that they want to be given out and the one they want to be withheld or shape it or more that accordingly. thank you very much to hear a shaheed t
