news just in from the done yes. republic where the mayor said it's at least 5 people have been injured at the city was brought with some of the most incense shelling it seen in 8th. yes. ah ukrainian forces fired 40 grot rockets overnight. 3 of them hit the city, sent a damaging multiple civilian buildings, including several residential blocks, a student campus under kindergarten. some people are reported late, still chops under the debris. a number of homes on cars also fell victim to the flames. in this footage from witnesses, you can see buildings that have been heavily damaged. one local shed, his terrifying experience with us. please include me. the strike head at 7 am, the bang was so loud. it shook the house was the people who lived there had left a few days before. i don't know anything about the other neighbors. well,

as fighting continues in the don boss, the russian defense ministry says that several ukrainian attacks have been repelled in little guns republic ortiz at correspondence, he could have done a false russian troops on the foot lines as they fight for key positions in the region. in these woods, just outside crim and ny danger lurks around every tree. what used to be one of ukraine's national parks is now one of the most heavily contested swathes of land and the dawn bass. i need me to put them down for the ukrainian forces, crossed the river and their mobile units shell, our checkpoints. our intelligence identified some of their strongholds here. their main tactic is to attack, so they mostly work in mobile groups. artillery is useless here in for me walking single file, we follow the only path deemed safe towards russia's positions. with

our guide leads us to what looks like a long abandoned hut. but the 1st impression of desolation is deceiving. inside we meet russian soldiers from the mortar, battery hidden in the thicket. not far from here. this is our battalions command and observation point, but we gather all the information about the targets in our battalions frontline, we decide what targets to attack with our mortars. hm. with globally, this move is to quench any attempts of the ukrainian forces to cross the forest

that is surrounding all of us. ah, what you see here is the equivalent of close quarters combat in the world of artillery. this mortar team is only about 2, maybe 4 kilometers away from their targets. bigger guns and tanks provide extra fire power from further away to. right now, the woodland here is in the grey zone. and whichever side concedes the ambition to take it will have to give up neighboring villages and towns to suffering a painful tactical defeat is done of reporting from the don bass r t o coverage of the complaints in ukraine can often be imbalanced as there are few western media correspondence reporting from the ground in the dumbass. well

that the lease is according to johnny miller, who's a reporter from iran's press tv, who recently returned from done yet. i spoke to emily in studio. it's incredibly tense and dangerous. there at the moment only returned a few days ago from the week before from saturday, 20 civilians have been killed in week alone. and the sense of danielle is being shelves by ukrainian forces. and the important story to realize is that we are intentionally shelling civilians are markets around the area. i've been to the boss stations of bodies in the streets. youth, hostel youth sense was hit the other day with 4 people were killed. and it's very difficult to see any military targets in don, yet good civilian areas. ukraine is trying to sometimes the target ministration buildings. sometimes they, they often targets infrastructure like energy infrastructure schools, sometimes just random shelling. so what do you think this is so under reported in the western media? johnny? i think that's, that's the reason i news happens where the journalists are, i think there's been no mainstream outlets from british or american companies that
2:07 am
have occasionally been french, german, italian. but any mainstream of what a lot of fantastic, mainstream, honest reporters working for mainstream channels in western countries. and if any of them were there living under the shelling, having the apartment bombs going to the boss stations, the civilians in the street that have no choice report exactly what i've been reporting that the vast majority support russia and ukraine is intensely selling support. in fact, that's why it's not been covered all in on africa, the u. s. the president's has signed various deals at the ongoing summit with african nations in an apparent attempt to court the continents with us as washington seeks to recover influence in the region, as it increasingly turns toward china and russia. we've now for a long time, good after success and prosperity is essential to assuring a better future for all of us. not just for africa, united states is all in africa's future. we're still grappling with the deadly

pandemic facing down war and instability address in economic challenges with global impact fighting, fighting, rising food prices, tackling the impacts of climate change. we can't solve any of these challenges without african leadership at the table. and i'm not trying to be nice. that's a fact. oh, from on this, let's cross live now to our correspondence trouble. let's hot la. thanks for joining us. carrabas. now, by dint, he made several references to the global impulses of africa. can you tell us what's behind his timing and the increased focus on the continent? well, peter, there is a scramble for africa and a scramble for the power it holds, especially within global for a like the united nations general assembly america had wake up call. if you will, earlier this year, upon the vote in which they tried to muscle african countries to the voting with
2:09 am
the western light condemned russia. and something that was not really contained by different african states. many of them choosing to abstain while from really rejecting them. all right. the problem here is that america is waking up late in the game. they find china really entrenched on the continent and russia to have found space with in some of the conflict loans that you find on the continent. and they have voice ahead and, you know, created really good relations with those countries. america is not only waking up late in the game. joe biden is still trying to lecture the continent. he still putting human rights before development. he still seems like he is pushing an agenda out with conditionality. well, china and russia really coming into the continent with assistance both before anything else and development, this type of mindful, lots of african need us. but as we stand, even within the summit,
2:10 am
joe biden is talking about is talking about human rights and talking about the openness and accountability of democracy, entertaining countries like equitorial guinea, we've just had a disputed election and this is according to his own state department. that said that they cannot really trust the credibility of an election where a ruling party gets some 95 percent of the vote. but that is not the message that is being priest now in the white house. and also part of the confusion with regard to the funding. not only is it happening for the 1st time in a, d is to show how important africa, if i guess in american eyes. but it's also coming at a time when there is a varying interest from african leaders to the united states. they're not singing on the same hymn book if you will. african leaders are watching the kinds of support the ukraine kicks, enjoying, and they see that as something contrary to what they've ever enjoyed. america has
2:11 am
committed some $60000000000.00 of fun to what ukraine in this 11 month conflict. and the part of the, some is the only committing the $55000000000.00 of investments over the next 30 years. that is a tiny fraction of what china continues to invest on the continent year in year out . and we've seen that move with the russians to most goals. investments have grown significantly, some 40 percent 2015 on the continent, and that is something that does not go for watson. but america, once it's hedging money, just if they lose justice, they've lost that control. and that influence in latin america and middle east, they seeing it dwindle in africa to and they wanted back at the summit is really all about. but at the top of it is what they promised not to discuss. there wasn't an occasional need not to china from the summit, but that is not what we found from us. that was the defense secretary of the united
2:12 am
states as he just aimed straight for russia. and now with these, what we're witnessing, the p r c expanded footprint in the, on the continent on a daily basis. and that creates problems that will be eventually destabilizing, if they're not already, we see russia continuing to peddle cheap weapons, employing mercenaries across the continent. and so the combination of those activities by those 2 countries, i think that bears watching and certainly i think their influence again, can be the stabilizer embed. if the difference rights america is moving into the continent, still the same old, same old united states. let us give africa food aid, let us keep it that they've done. let's make sure our influence is still pretty present on the continent while china is moving in and big infrastructure projects.
2:13 am
the building rose to building airports mega railway projects, and that is not what the united states is known for here. and people are wondering what this commitment actually means. and some commentators are fed. this is as close to cold war ration, at least on african swale as we've ever had in recent times. but china is remaining astute and remaining resolute with regards to in line on the african continent. they want only a responsible invest, even if the united states and even if they're seen as rivals. but they want that investment that will develop africa and how people. and this was their response to lloyd austin remarks. push me to see what we hope the u. s. could view china africa cooperation with an open mind. africa is not an arena big public game school alone, the target of arbitrary pressure from any country or person. washington should respect the world, the african people, and take concrete action that help africa development. but instead of concentrating
2:14 am
efforts on smearing and attacking other countries, i really do not think that america can waltz into the continent, especially after the loss of tries to, which was endured over the last 10 years. particularly the last 4 during the donald trump presidency. where disparaging comments were made above the continent and its leaders and the people that it's very difficult to just, you know, smooth all those relations with one summit. but by that might have missed the trick here in a sense that he should have been the one who comes to africa. if africa is that important. and if it's really a part of the global voice and should be content should be at the table as he said . then way, if the you and security council feet is credible at the thank you very much for breaking down those countries. vine for influence in africa. thank you. let you know we spoke with joe oldman who is the host of the conservative daily podcast.
2:15 am
and he thinks the u. s. is rapidly losing confidence among africans while look at the libyan q qu, and also look at what they did in today and look at what they did in, in other african nations, in the amount of interference and things that have done in those regions. it's like a bunch of school kids at a, at a high school. it's always like they're bad, they're bad, they're bad, but they never look at themselves. let's go back in time and look at what the u. s . has made promises over and over and over again in that region. they've done this for decades and they've never delivery. they said, we're going to give you a, we're going to help you with element and those development for large part i spent a lot of time and in africa and the middle east, those developments where china would come in and say, hey, we're going to do something they always did it, but the us never, i don't think they learn from their mistakes and they definitely don't learn from history. and the thing, the thing that saddens me is the fact that they're doing things that do not benefit the people of africa. and it's not as if we're pulling on both sides of a country when trying to, to help them and say, okay, china is trying to help in the united states trying to help. and we're competing in
2:16 am
that arena the united states just sees them as much like to do their own people in the united states as, as slaves to be enslaved, or to use a pines and game and or the great power or money to come. and in other news, american football funds have been reeking habits. havoc, excuse me, on the streets of europe. since the nations seem lost to nail against france after a long winning streak in this year's fif, well cop ah, sanctions are particularly high in paris, where morocco funds were reportedly setting off fireworks into crowds of french funds. city officials called on more than $5000.00 police officers expats in violence, regardless of which team on the much police reports. li, arrested 40 armed individuals heading to the sions elisa to take part in the vine and clashes, claiming that some had ties too far. right groups ah,
2:17 am
bonds clashed all over the country with centuries old colonial tensions bringing out the worst on both sides. authorities for montpellier, i have confirmed that a 14 year old moroccan boy was killed after being hit by a driver fleeing a crowd of rival funds. ah, and over in brussels, police were forced to use tear gas and water cannon for dispersed crowds of moroccan funds, who had been shooting fireworks offices and stopping fires in the streets. anyone sporting a french flag was apparently a target us politicians have called for the expulsion of russia from the un security council fighting moscow's role in the conflicts in ukraine. the bond would not be possible, however, under the year and charter russia media, however, have already faced numerous bonds on crackdowns, which could get worse. that's as

a new e u draft. blacklist reports. li includes russian media figures and outlets without he been among them. an international organization protecting the rights of journalists has refused to support russian media and a response to ortiz request for comments. since it does not view russian media as unbiased. the committee's refusal to live out so it's a states aims. a comes as a member of germany's main opposition party proposed even more measures. namely the creation of a committee to control the spread of so called russian media propaganda. the danger of so called pro russian fakes has been named as a key threat to the european community. such comments come amid recent reports that artes a german language channel uses 3rd party outlets on youtube channels to spread disinformation . well, i'm now joined live by professors say it mohammed mirandi of the terran university
2:19 am
am. thank you very much for joining us professor. now, what do you make of this suggestion in the you to, to make a so called anti russian propaganda committee? i think it's quite natural for the you to move in that direction. this is nothing really new. it's been going on for many years. all of the iranian media has been sanctioned for many years now. many people in west asia have been the platform from facebook, from twitter, from instagram, because of their political views that are critical of apartheid in palestine or critical of the united states in europe. and so whether it's individuals, whether it's state media or whether it's independent media that is supportive of iran, this has been the case for many years now. and increasingly,
2:20 am
over the past few years, we've seen the same sort of behavior towards russia. and now of course, the right the russians are, are like iran, they're being silenced across the board. and those that do remain online. they are being snuffled, they're being silence through algorithms. so the west while claiming to be a bass in of human rights and freedom of speech. in reality, when their power decreases in relative terms and alternative voices across the world can more easily be heard, they become more despotic. and they increasingly silence those voices that run against their mainstream views in the west. we focused on it just a bit. but what does this this mean for the freedom of the press on the freedom of speech in europe? as you say, you know, it's one of the buttons of european values is freedom of speech.
2:21 am
yes, and it's not just a problem in europe. it's this the famous true in north america. and in canada, they filings alternative voices in the united states. they do so as well, and even those people who work for media outlets that are non worse, that are non western, are increasingly under pressure. they've lost jobs. they can't find new jobs or academics who have voices that are run against the mainstream or what the lead demand of them they increasingly are under pressure. they cannot get tenure, young professors who join universities, if they criticize western policy in palestine or western policy on iran or on syria, or when it comes to the support of not sees in ukraine.
2:22 am
this is something that is in some places is allowed, but it has consequences. you can raise your voice, but then you lose your job. you can raise their voice. but then you are intimidated into silence. so whether it's institutional intimidation or whether it's into new laws that are made in order to silence these voices, we are seeing this happen across the board and fewer and fewer people are able to hear those alternative voices. only people really seek them out can, can find them. do you think we can read anything into the timing of this? but why do you think the issue of so called russian propaganda is such a hot topic in europe now because they've been lying to their people about ukraine. and as the economic
2:23 am
situation gets worse, people are going to be increasingly dissatisfied. they can lot in the past, they could have lied about venezuela or syria because it had less consequences for the well being of ordinary europeans who are busy with their own life. except for of course, when the syrian refugees began to move towards europe. for obvious reasons, the europeans, nato, and their regional allies destroyed syria. so ordinary syrians had nowhere to go. so that created problems for these western regimes. but now with the war in ukraine, the expectation that they've created among the population was that they were going to win and ukraine. it is. and it is obvious that nato is on the losing side. and life for ordinary europeans is going to get much worse. and because of that,
2:24 am
as western power decreases, they become more despotic. they become exactly what they claim their adversaries are. do you think outright buns like this are effective, or do you stopping the spread of what they call? you know, russian, russian disinformation or can they be counter productive they are effective in the short term in their own societies. but they are, they run contrary to their interests across the world because the false amys that they've created among many in the global south is that they are indeed regimes that protect freedom of speech. but when people in russia, when people in central asia or the subcontinent or west asia, africa increasingly see how they ban all these different media outlets and the
2:25 am
silence different voices, then the soft power that those western powers accumulated in past decades through this false image of them being the bastions of freedom that diminishes and therefore their soft power influence across the world diminishes as, as well. so on the one hand, they increase their ability, at least for the short term, to maintain control at home. but they increased the pace of the global south moving away from western countries as well. well, professor said mohammed miranda the terran university. thank you very much for your thoughts with us today. pleasure is always happy on the program. thank you. the peruvian government has announced a national state of emergency as process continue across the country. the 50 day measure will authorize, confused on suspend the public's freedom of movement and assembly
