field? i'm leaving the prism there to go to your commission. save say it is time to make sure europe is home by accepting ukraine, moldova, and the west and bulkheads into the union image phase that these days will fall under the influence of russia or china. can we imagine your union will be without ukraine without moldova, without the western balkan and those parts of europe are under the influence of russia or china? impossible news flash for queen ursula evangeline president of the european commission. it's entirely conceivable for ukraine, although the and the western balkans to not be in the european union because they never have been. and as a result, they've been able to diversify their interest between east and west and maintain strategic autonomy, which means that they aren't stuck having to rely solely on the you end up being
1:38 am
processed every order, the modem and deputy prime minister, for example. just said last month that china is built in rhode initiative, could help boost mobile with transportation infrastructure and turn the country into a critical transit point between europe and china. ukraine play the same kind of trends that roll between the you and russian economies right up until washington stuck its nose into that relationship. certainly, as president, alexander, who judge has the same independent mindset, saying back in february that his country won't blindly follow b, e. u and sanctioning rush because it's not in serbia's best. national interest, not formally committing to either east or west, is a pretty good way to ensure that you're going to continue to be seduced by pretty much everyone. but cleaner. so uh, is really showing washington and brussels hands here, when she basically blurted out that these countries and not committing to a monogamous relationship with the western block, is just on bearable c, b,
1:39 am
you just broke up with russia. and it's a complicated relationship with china, with the us pushing for us with their so hot and messed up these relationships. and it's life with skyrocketing inflation and energy costs. as a result, while the block is now acting really insecure about any of its friends wanting to hook up with russia in china. so now he was tray, it's friends to pick a side to prove their loyalty. no hail behind brussels back down to pub. meanwhile, some members of nato, like the lithuanian president, had been pushing for the military alliance to offer you crane membership perspective. as a kind of engagement ring that he has in the west can flash that russian president environment put in. we should not hesitate to make bolder decisions because otherwise persons regime will decide the less than that lies a week and should be posting to the corner,

so they surrender. all remarks on ukraine's membership perspective will for sure, increase the fighting spirit until few cleaning and sol just on the battlefields. and that is very important. but even this leader of lithuania, one of the most anti rushing countries in europe is saying that ukraine cannot expect a marriage when it's still an active costs, like with an ex russia in this case. yeah. who needs that baggage? certainly not. the german defense minister by the sounds of it. during my recent meetings with major secretary general young stilton bridge, we have once again agreed that the alliance must not become a side to the granting conflict of any circumstances. this is why we cannot answer the question on you. grant's accession to nature while there is war going on and ukraine only after that, we and ukraine will decide on the conditions of succession to the lines. yeah, she wants absolutely nothing to do with all of this drama, even though nato played an instrumental role in the breakup between ukraine and

russia and creating all the drama, the pretty and for mysteries recently said that it would be suicide. not to let you refrain into nato. yeah. to mention me or else i'm going to kill myself, is always a really good foundation for a relationship that's totally not dysfunctional or tactic at all as well. this comes ahead of next week's nay. so summit and lithuania, where the block is expected to approve additional military support for kids. however, ukraine's expression bid to the alliance will not be on the agenda of the meeting dislike. he asked in logs for roadmap, ukraine's presidents has also been pushing for as 165 projects, but as top may so ask most stays, kids will not be getting such find a pallet any time soon. at least in today's currents, counselor offensive is those of international affairs and security on the smoke slow boat, it saves the nato summit, is on like you to bring, he has the results. it's hosting for 2 things. it won't happen is obviously ukraine
1:42 am
will not receive either a median, as mentioned into nato or a membership action plan, no roadmap. it will not receive f sixteens or promises a concrete promises of f sixteens with a timeline. it will receive more vaguely worded promises about is rarely style security guarantees, which simply means they will provide ukraine with lots of weapons, essentially what they're already doing. so that that means nothing. if you crane was the simply absolved of a meeting all of the military requirements of joining the alliance, it would still mean as long as a conflict is going on with russia. and there are territorial claims contested that that would immediately invoke article 5 and bring nato and russia into direct
1:43 am
military conflict. as long as this conflict continues. and if there is open question about how much of ukraine is left under the control of the care of regime at the end of this conflict, that does leave a lot of questions open out of how even to fashion a road map while the conflict is going on the, for you as president biden housing valid, a list of his normal needs for bypass and boats with a position and the advisory commission on public diplomacy falling into the hands of a politician with a vaulted contribution poss. elliot abrams has been 3 republican administrations including donald trump, while he was responsible for account painted fine replacement, his wayland, presidents, nicholas medea were previously during the wake of the presidency. abrams found himself in the world in the wrong countries scandal. i seek with us operation 2 and legally fund anti communist rebels in nicaragua, using the proceeds from west themselves to iran. in 1991,

all 5 and liberal electorate full set of lead challenge the nomination. you know, i'm concerned that only it's there. he's not the best representative of, of good diplomacy. i've interacted with lovely it for a long, long time, including when he worked for senator moynihan, who i worked for and then interacted with him during the trump administration when he was charged with dislodging nicholas madura from venezuela, which you know, was an abject failure. he's a survivor, you know, i'd say, you know, as you pointed out, he did plead guilty, he was pardoned. and you know, that in itself would seem to be disqualifying the pleading guilty part to being on an advisory board where you're supposed to inform the secretary state and best practices and how to make diplomacy more effective. there's no question that the, the liberal base or jo biden's base will be apoplectic. that's going to be the

messages. why does this commission deserves this criminal who lied to congress? and now was in a position of advising the secretary of state on best practices for diplomacy. so yeah, it's going to be controversial. and other developments international atomic energy agency. chief raphael grossi has greenlighted a controversial plan for japan to release radioactive waste. voting for me is default fish, stream and nuclear plants into the pacific ocean. where is the science? the japanese decision based the standards of environmental safety measures, despite and outcry from neighboring states plan as he to has been proposed and device is in conformity with the agreed international standards. and each application send, the, the goldman decides to proceed with it would have negligible impact

on the environment, meaning the water fish and settlement for 2 years. japan has been pushing to release the costume of waste water into the ocean, made a growing se, civic storage containers could be of the field. so care will partially filter the way through before draining it as a precaution. the whole process is expected to take up to 40 years, causing concerns among environmental estimates, tons neighboring nations, rushes, green paste, seeing the official cold depends decision if all the time that outweigh dismissed the decisions evolving responsibility to see, monitoring a future generation. you go see the report cannot green light japan's ocean discharge decision and cannot prove that the decision is the only st. best or most reliable option. just we urge the pan to be responsible to humanity and future

generations and stop the ocean discharge plan. international and independent trying, especially sandra long released upon has no right to make such decisions. utilize shortly as the consequences of contaminated volts in the pacific would be a reverse symbol of this nuclear contaminated water. it causes a damage to the marble and it will be in the reversible and as long as the environment with the neighborhood. because the water, the codes that would carry it is nuclear pulses around the world. if there was a huge concern of neighboring countries, even though the united states for example, have released is water in the cost, it must be in some so, um, water and a lot to assess a cloud, it labeled with so many nations in the region and such a cost to insure the area for fisheries and,

in the middle, kyle has received a a to make over as consumers have a band and a dairy farmer instead of different brands of whole 2 percent in skim options. now range from a soil almond and out. i'm sure i know hughes, and on today's 360 view, we're going to look at what is causing the world to become more lactose intolerant . let's get started.
1:51 am
a new ad by the creators behind gotten milk has got people talking international correspond it worked fine, a solano explains why this take on getting people to drink. milk may have backfired . well, scotty, i don't think actress. i'm for media and aubrey plaza intended to get in the middle of the milk wars. with this commercial, the world's 1st and only milk made from what. what now started with a simple idea. i saw a tree, and i asked myself, can i drink this? as it turns out, the answer is yes. if you make it into the commercial, went all it's showing different flavors and it's not until the end. when you see the click on up, it's tyson products. do you 100 parts? i realize it is a power the they even created a website and there some vice. scrolling through to the bottom, you read a disclaimer saying wouldn't milk is 100 percent fake,
1:52 am
completely made up. and the whole spoof is actually spawns sort. i'm paid for by america's meal companies is would melt real. absolutely not. only real now says failed. then what did i invest in? the only issue is most millennials and n z will drink. would milk? as you said, be for scott the meal aisle has changed. there are tons of different products labeled milk, making nothing very alternative these very popular, but the question is, would use drink, would milk market with all of these options? i tell you, i am not a moved. i mean, i'm sorry i had to enter my joke on that one. i'm sorry, but no, i would not. i'm, i'm one of those the plays and you know, there's a reason why god put a couch on this earth make milk. why? why i scares me. of things that are altered in sort of a, a, in a scientific era. well, for me is like there's so many products based off of the theory. you know, like pastries, lot teeth,
1:53 am
obviously the cheese sandwich. brad with butter and the it's hard not to not eat or drink me. right. and i think it's important that we know what actually when they say meal, what is milk every other day? we have lots of other questions in this world. now we just added one more into our repertoire. are trying to thank you so much for reporting on this. yeah, there's almost 79000000 begins in the world. and while that number sounds big, there's only one percent of the global population. but the number of people who are choosing not to drink milk from the cow is increasingly growing. now the choice to consume milk alternative is subjective and varies from person to person. all based on individual preferences, belief in dietary needs. some are choosing the alternative because they might have an allergy or lactose intolerance. well, others choose the alternatives because they believe it is healthier for their body . then there's those that believe in drinking non dairy,
1:54 am
because they're choosing this past because they believe is better for the plant by me, either methane produced by cal's or the possible in humane treatment of cattle on dairy farms. but with the retail sales of a plant based milk alternative topping 20900000000 globally last year. the increase in availability of products and the marketing of options definitely is causing real competition for the dairy industry. in fact, statistical data reveals milk alternatives are the largest category of a plant based food exceeding meat ready made meals and ice cream products. what effect will this have on the future of the dairy industry and world wide availability? well, to join us to discuss is sylvain shop why is a community research and professor in food distribution and a policy at del jolla university in halifax, nova scotia, canada. and he's a former member of the universities and faculty of management. thanks for joining
1:55 am
us, dr. charlotte, why? thank you so much for joining us today. i want to start off this conversation. are you seeing an actual decrease in demand for milk from dairy farms right now? actually the consumption per capita has been dropping steadily for last several years. uh, so consumption overall is quite steady. but with even with more people to feed the we are seeing a drop per capita. so we are drinking less mil now with the dairy products a bit different dairy products. so depending of the product you look at, demand actually does go up from time to time like butter. for example, a few years ago the demand for butter did go up uh for other products as well. so it really depends on the of the product you look like you look at. but generally speaking, fluid milk consumption is, is way down per capita on both sides of the border. really, why do you feel like this is happening at the present time?
1:56 am
well, 1st of all, i think that a lot of people are considering reconsidering their relationship with with dairy. i mean, we're the only um, uh, mabel's honors drinking milk from another mammal. and when you think about it, it really can feel awkward for some people. there is some history, obviously it didn't happen overnight. the, we've been doing this for thousands and thousands of years, but now with science, we know more about nutrition. we know more about health. and so now there are more options. all of a sudden the people could actually get their nutritional fix elsewhere are consuming, other types of food and the end. thanks to science, thanks the research we're able to provide these options to, to consumers. that's why people are starting to reconsider their relationship with milk. and barry generally speaking, are very farmers currently trying to do anything to help encourage consumption of
1:57 am
their product. again, as such a large scale as we've seen in the past. i mean, one of the largest and lobbying groups used to be, especially in the west, was the dairy fibers, especially amongst the education department. are you seeing the idea of stepping up those marketing campaigns again as one of their possible approaches? i actually believe that right now, we're in the midst of a dairy war of sort, cuz on the one side, of course, you have the dairy lobby, which is incredibly powerful on both sides of the border by the way. they have voice at many tables. uh, they're quite influential, politically and economically. but on the other side, what we're, what we're seeing that's new is our plant base companies. uh, companies who manufactured products. so using vegetable proteins, they're out there actually uh, not only advocating for their product, but the crew they, they openly criticize dairy in general,
1:58 am
ult lee is certainly one company that comes to mind right now in america. you're seeing the company advertising, in many newspapers, uh ads. they put their putting as criticizing dairy, so it is something we haven't seen before, but you can see that right now. uh, both sides i guess are challenging each other. but still, we have to recognize the fact that the dairy law be in north america is still quite influential and powerful. have we actually considered what would happen if dairy farms around the world actually started closing? and do you see some of the same lack of consumption and present day, how could potentially lead to that? it's not just the supply of milk which will be effect. i mean, there's a whole ecosystem we have to worry about. oh, absolutely. so when you think about a dairy farm, you have to think of the oak eco system around it to think of the machinery. i
1:59 am
think of the jobs and the work in rule america and rule canada. i mean, those are critical things. when you think about how to grow and economy, you can just groat economy by amplifying urban centers. you have to think about, you know, uh, farm land use and, and, and you really quickly realize that animal proteins play a huge role. uh, with, with territory occupancy basically north america, it's quite create a lot of farmers are actually growing crops to feed animals. uh and of course with dairy farms. uh you have dairy fires really being quite a busy growing crops to feed animals and so on. and so forth. so there's a huge eco system around each and every farm and north america that can be, that can be denied really. so obviously the dairy sector is quite critical for
2:00 am
agrifood economy in north america. on a global perspective, the united nations food and agriculture organization and just announced milk eggs and meet or vital sources of nutrients and calories. but does this not go against the push we are seeing to go big and globally? or do use more alternatives to dairy and other types of naturally grown agriculture products. i think uh the message that, at least i'm hearing is, is that the issue of proteins in general is very much about choice. it's not about this or that. it's more about this and that for many years obviously animal proteins have had all the attention of the world. and most consumers in north america were fixated in, in, in eating and consuming animal proteins. but now we have options. uh i think what the un is saying basically is that yes they are traditions. uh they are uh.
