the rise and it physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological actions, or threats of actions and in fluids. now, the person, during and following the cobra 19, pandemic has been so great. do you? it has labeled the situation shadow pandemic sky. now he's in on this edition of 360 view, we're glad to examine the rise in domestic violence and why more has not been done to prevent it. let's get started. the the ripples and the cubic 19 pandemic and the locked downs have been felt beyond the realm of health. now. so my claim, this is just a coincidence. but the rise in domestic abuse. but during the pandemic locked downs
6:33 pm
and continuing around the globe and the years after should be very concerning this unintended consequences. as a result of a people in abusive relationships, no longer feeling they could leave. when things got bad knowing leaving is it hard enough as it is, or even finding a safe space to call for help. that the united nations refer to the rise in domestic violence victims as the shadow pen to make during cobra 19 lockdown. yet the globe doesn't seem to be losing it shadow. 3 years later after the pest demick, the national coalition against domestic violence says the number of victims remains the concert. the n. c, a, d, be found about 20 people per minute, are physically abused by an intimate partner. that is it a percent increase from before the pandemic? what's worse, the abuse is become even down there, where the record spike in homicides from an intimate partner, venezuela. so
6:34 pm
a 65 percent increase and finish sides in april 2020 compared to april 20. 19. now the organization of a salvador and women for peace. first 70 percent increase in domestic abuse reports in 2020 compared to 20. 19. and niger, an organization called women at risk found a 64 percent increase in cost of their hotline. after they've locked down is where i produce and you've gone to. there was a 522 percent increase in costs of the hotline run by the association of women lawyers. in india, one woman tells her story about how during lock downs, her husband lost his labor job and begin tracking became irritated and abusing her at home. the counseling center helping her had an increase in cost for help by a 160 percent since locked down to begin in march of 2020 to join us to discuss is buried goldstein who is the co author of representing the domestic violence survivor domestic violence abuse and child custody, and also author of

a scared to leave, afraid to stay. he'd been instructor and supervisor and a new york model better. a program for over a decade and attorney representing the victims of domestic violence for 30 years. and now provide workshops, judicial and other trading regarding domestic violence, particularly related to custody issues. month says he also served as a consultant and expert witness a barriers, new a book. the quincy solution stopped domestic violence and save $500000000000.00. how we can dramatically reduce domestic violence, crime with permanent tax practices. thank you so much for joining us, barry. glad to be here. have you seen a difference both during and post pandemic and abuse cases? i'm talking about the type or number of cases themselves and certainly there is a difference. and there are 2 things that they do. the 1st is
6:36 pm
that because women are forced to stay in the shade and they can't get away on their captive. and so they are much more vulnerable. the other thing is that there may be more likely to use drugs and alcohol. and i want to be clear drugs and alcohol do not cause domestic by which if a man believes insurance or another woman even do show even under the influence of drugs or mental illness or anything like that. but drugs, alcohol, visual owners, they reduce the additions. and so that means that a domestic violence that is. busy will be more so you're more likely to disable and so that's what you're doing well. well, when we talk about, when we talk about this type of use, there's different kinds are using
6:37 pm
a rise in physical mental, especially since a different type of abuse is did you find a certain type has more now than they did prior to pay demick centers, email street or more physical, more um, fatal uh, domestic pirates. um, but if i take the weight or do they do you weight is if women can't get away from their reviews or anything that makes or for them to leave increases domestic product, which maybe increases the risk. and that's the problem with the cost, the cords that need to find in award majority of cases that involve to save parents who love their children in domestic violence custody gauges.
6:38 pm
your courts are using the wrong practices. you're not using experts, they're not using the research. and as a result of they keep getting these cases well. and what that means is that it's much for, for women to lee. and that leads to the increase in calories. well, and you're talking about the physical abuse. what role does the mental abuse? does there any law that allows post pandemic? is there been any changes for a mental abuse that might be happening? i mean in reality words, perhaps the sort of the general will pay. busy attention to made to me is worth the substance abuse because there's, there's moves attached to the cause of domestic violence. but with do not pay
6:39 pm
attention to is the stakes wide chords that make it harder for women to leave their users. that's the biggest problem, the most common investing, fine, which is why did she stay? and that's not the best western of their question would be. why develop just women and even better busted, wouldn't be wider society around it would use web, increasingly, the inability to leave because of the broken cost of the court system. there's a major reason why she stays. and when she stays, her wife is in greater danger. berry, you talked about the fact that people, because of the pandemic and the locked out. so they had to be close contained with each other. they were in the same house. you really couldn't get out. but where there are other factors that appeared to make that you thought might lead to this
6:40 pm
increased things that might have been environmental outside of the house themselves that were having the impact of what was going on inside. yeah, i mean the history here. if you think about the domestic violence, came a public issue, really in the 19 seventy's, the wait 7 at that time there was no research. and the popular or something was the domestic violence in sports by mid to all their substance abuse. and that would to a lot of mistaken practices, particularly under custody chords. but in 19 seventy's, the late seventy's into the eighty's societies develop the practices that made it easier for women to leave. it was easier to get a divorce to gibson for, to go to shelter, to get a divorce,
6:41 pm
and all those things made it easier for women or users to get away. and then as a result, there was a shed, a reduction in domestic violence or a check. you really domestic violence on this, on of all sorts are really abusive. men have to go to practice. oh, she get custody as a way to regain what they believe is their right to control every time i have progress. step relieve that and because the custody gorge don't work, a mortgage to get research. don't use the rank refreshing goals, they keep getting your wall and show is a really successful tractor for abusers to go. we have to investigate.
6:42 pm
and the courts are stuck with the practices from the 19 seventy's. and there's no way to project that, or we're getting their job or during the pandemic and the locked downs and 7 points of the country except parts of the go. busy parts of the globe lasted a few months. some parts the globe lasted a few years, one to 2 years. what was happening in those custody courts at that point? they will continue rate with their dad practices where they open, where they actually open, where they seen cases or where they being kind of delayed and put off. and you're seeing a back back stock of these kind of cases, not being able to actually see a judge sometimes they were supposed to work on west way. we do. you do wait in the other one cases where the center on the why don't want to use 0 and you were withdrawn it all approaches which
6:43 pm
helped. but the problem was in the custody, the cords, they belong to the course and wanted to make sure that the fathers had access to the driver. and so there would be additional wrist rather than show ready to go back and forth and get more exposure to go to and with mothers trying to reject their job right from the health risk for go good and from domestic violence or drug abuse of users, we did that as if it was a nation, and we're using that to try to switch custody as too often course. so for those tactics. so when the lock downs were happening, were you watching what was going on around the globe?
6:44 pm
were you concerned about domestic violence increasing and was there anyone actually voicing their concerns out there are as, as we're finding out people who are concerned, we're pretty much bullied into quiet because obviously we're talking about the main issue which was health related. well, i say the problem was cultivated, which of course is a very legitimate concern, but they also have distracted attention from the issue of domestic route. so we got less attention, less supported schaeffer, certainly, domestic violence organizations, you know, for a few years now, i've been really concerned that because when they were starting with the abusers, a yoga down with 2 more d, the honor shops, certainly that was raised. what you, i say government works had all the priority section. they do page sufficient detection. and of course,
6:45 pm
the cost of the chords were broken long before coded. and you know, we now have very substantial research that court could use to better protect victims of domestic violence and their children. for the most part, they're not using this research. absolutely. incredible. thank you so much for sharing with us. hold on with us because after the break we will continue our conversation with barrett goldstein about if realistic options to curtail domestic violence actually exist.
6:46 pm
the the name of the game. but you got one of the see at the end of this, i guess i'm all add a little more of a simple uh, i thought of it either i wanna say is and sort of like that is some what are the media? dig alone? i'm glad you know you got one way just under then you'll sit in data sorta the sona a k. i knew i love is that goes to you that i mean, i think you're going to go see, i'm a persona of a be that me court by that i, i didn't go to almost the end to see the best. so that sort of i did out of in the
6:47 pm
see it, the, the single man throw some of the manual and all that, i don't want to lose the remainder machine on it, each se, mazda minutes off on, you know, you see them, joe likes it, and say i couldn't give them, but these are, let's see. let me look to see like tennessee, by the video in and out of this and fit on. so, being at the full, let's see on there the most to go boss i need to, i'm let me sadie, one of the meeting with jimmy until noon. but i really need to speak with somebody that get some given what you're my policy. ok. so you see the goals in the 2nd, i mean either it is by you say know things on a certain different things. you're going i think the end of the 2nd. welcome back on this guy. now hughes and you are watching the 360 view we're
6:48 pm
rejoined on this episode by barry goldstein who i spent the last 30 years representing victims of domestic violence. and it was new book. the quincy solution stopped domestic violence and say, $500000000000.00 demonstrates how we can dramatically reduce domestic violence crime with proven practices. thanks for sticking with this barre. yeah, we've talked about the victims, but what about the services which are usually offered? what happened to them during the pandemic? the victims had you much less know they were stopped. you know, all these they tried to call the police. they will be boy and abuser state that the problem will be arrested is that the call rather that they do something to and you know, our system usually the,
6:49 pm
the user will get our jail very quickly. and they go back and you're going to punish the victim overboard to get somebody to use the you for the most part. they don't have the software and science and the same problem with the courts. the years you would say that the courts were projects because we, there's usually you can just show great, but that's not an interesting. so, while your work is here in the united states, i'm sure that you've looked around the globe, and is there a country who traditionally handles domestic violence better than the rest? and did that say true during the pandemic? all these, you know, just to the factories are doing well as a job. i mean, there's some big rich, there's a great bring past shop course or control was which emphasize that most domestic prior,
6:50 pm
which is not physical. and we need to see other forms of domestic violence. our series word was kind of interesting on a roller coaster to work with locally santa each one each and. and about that time, i actually got on facebook for other research, and i've tried to contact too many, many projected fathers all over the world. and what i really saw was that the same mistakes is a garner problems that i've seen for years in the united states. or really international, the courts or maybe the same mistakes they're using both because the organization varies. they're not using the research, they're going out of their way to keep up using fathers insurance
6:51 pm
wise. and they've been told that the benefits jo road with the office. it is true and we now have really important research for the study h e, for our 1st job experiences. and what that's something that we tells us is that sure are exposed to domestic violence, child abuse, and having problems with wides and visual ways of trying to control it goes to the message of well being of children. and of course, already be using, you know, my biggest concern moving forward is you hear a watch that here. say you watch all the stories that are coming out around the globe. do you think this shadow pandemic was serious enough to have raised concerns if there ever was a situation again in the club were locked down were necessary, especially the long term. the people, governments, municipalities,
6:52 pm
would be better prepared to protect those who might be put in an abusive situation . the north part of the problem dear eastern course, are used to wish new to start objective opinions. and that means that the expert can say whatever they believe, whatever supports their position and courts are used to doing that and they sort of a soon as easy for the experts makes it easy or doesn't make it easy for the sure. when i trust the car, i'm giving the object to the image based on the research and the research close to the essence of what will be in your job or and for some reason, which hasn't jumped on that and say, that's what we should do. i know there's no more and more research that should work well for the other problems. you know,
6:53 pm
many of my colleagues have work to pass legislation to create reforms. i never had some really good was passed when they go to try this registration. the legislators say we're for you want to go ahead. all you want to do in case you wish to. once i get the time i want to step it is good was and the judges get around the continue to do the same for the search. what we need is comprehensive legislation, white something that i was there was a job there, which would show the cords, stop, do we do phase for me children, which used to research, which is a multi disciplinary approach. and if we did that, every single change. and so for shepherd, she stays introduced as
6:54 pm
a travel guide. but not yet a pastor. it's very, it's all about accountability is the way that i feel about it. because if you looked at the school, say it was, it didn't take rocket science rise. but if kids were not going to school, then they were not being checked in on. so when kids were at home with their abusers, that abuse just will continue. and there was no account ability to look in on them . i really appreciate you joining us for this because because off then in the current judicial system as you've talked about they this is repetitive and they don't want the state legislatures don't want to pass these sorts of laws. so therefore, the judges don't follow the law because there is no law. so why do you think we've talked about the judicial system not wanting to do it? what is the law enforcement? what rights do they have to step in and protect the victims of domestic abuse without having necessarily a judge behind them? i mean, conflict from one part of the problem is they don't know the research. actually,
6:55 pm
they don't understand on that or do it. and they have to run over again of the children, the most rich and their wives are they do better with both directions or watch. and that's true. in general, in most cases is not true when one of the parents is abusive. what are the things on what to say, where it is, the price is children do not need to pay our cheaply, they need their primary attraction to hear more of the bill. they need to see there is more than the abuse of war. and additionally, the with the adage, it's obvious. and yet the courts forget that they keep trying to watch the children to interact with dangerous abusers. and they're wanting children's logic. you know, we talked a minute ago about the $960.00 plus children who have been burger with the other
6:56 pm
children. they, they should live, but don't have really dish from substance abuse and suicide to your heart attacks and cared. sure. with these children's why age? i mean, it's just so frustrating that the courts are just so used to live that, that listen to the why did we make sure. while i was interested to know that this only continued this not only happened before the parent did it, but it's obviously continuing posts and demick, we have not fixed it any of the problems yet. thank you so much. very goldstein for joining me here with all the undeniable data regarding the rise in domestic abuse. it is easy for me to say cobit lockdown is actually did more harm then good to protect public health, and i'm sorry. now here's this has been the news. you can use,
