the region is directly attributable to the strong guidance and influence of chris daly in working toward program goals, and whereas he will be leaving as a member of the san francisco board of supervisors in january 2011 and will also leave his position as a director of astransbay joint powers authority, -- director of the trasnbay joint powers authority, the authority wishes him continued success and happiness in all his future endeavors, and i want to say on my behalf and certainly on behalf of staff how much we have really appreciated all your efforts, directors. your courage, your integrity has just been commendable, and i want to thank you for all the years you fought along our side. you did fight the hard battles with us till the wee hours of the moment, and at all times,

you have conducted yourself with honor. even when things were not necessarily popular, you were there for us. but for your support and help all these years, we would not be here today. i personally want to thank you. i want you to know that i'm going to miss you terribly. we hope that we can continue to have you involved in our project. we want to make sure -- and invite you to the major milestones and keep you apprised. thank you very much for everything you have done. you are a good man, and we tell everybody that. thank you. director ford: i would like to follow up -- well, director cohen. director cohen: i was in public service with supervisor daly for about 10 years.

there were many issues over those 10 years that we were not on the same side. it was a matter of public policy, but it was really nice to have the opportunity on a project to be on the same side of an issue. as formidable of an adversary that you were, you were a better ally, so i appreciate that and wish you the best of luck. >> it has been a pleasure to work with chris, to follow his career, of stand-downs', nays and yeas. good luck. thank you. director ford: it has been a pleasure to have you on this board, and i think we have done some great work over the past few years of advancing this project. the staff has brought us good decisions, and we have been able to support them the majority of

the time. they have brought things before us, and largely due to your advocacy for this project and your discerning the critical issues from a policy standpoint, we have been able to accomplish a great deal, and you will be missed. i really enjoyed working with you in your capacity as a director of this board, and i look forward to working with you in the future because i know you are going to be around. thank you. director daly: thank you. i'm going to take a very brief moment. let me thank maria and the whole tjpa family for your work. if you sit on enough of these boards, you realize that while technically, the staff works for the board, in reality, in terms of the labor of love and the time and effort and energy, the

board's really do work for the staffs. fortunately, we have a very good one here. thank you to my colleagues, present and past, here on the tjpa. i have only been here for eight years. i think tony really wanted to be here when i was first elected, and for some reason, acquiesced. but it is not really in my nature to not see things through to final completion, so i'm really not ready to go. and somehow my goal is still here. [laughter] i figured there has got to be a way that i can hang on. but probably, i will just have to secret development through to near completion, and the actual

digging and contract letting and construction will have to be overseen by others that follow, but they will have pretty much the same staff and family here doing the work, so the project is in very good hands. thank you very much. one other point -- i was doing one of these interviews, and they asked me about transbay, and i was not even thinking. it was probably on my phone or my i had doing something else, and i was giving an interview at the same time, and i just went into the talking points about climate change and a new neighborhood and affordable housing, and i was talking 40 we will or three minutes of ourtransbay -- about transbay not paying attention, and i had

to stop myself and say that i was really giving the talking points, but when i stop to think about it, this is an incredible project, and i probably have been rounded and involved in too long to fully appreciate how incredible it is. you have to take a few steps back to look at it, and if you think about the -- about climate change, about the future of the state of california and our transportation systems, if you go to enough regional government meetings and talk about regional airport expansion and you have that kind of perspective, trust me, this is huge. it has been my honor, my pleasure to have been part of it over the last eight years. thank you. director ford: ok, do i have a motion? it has been moved and seconded. all those in favor? you can abstain. ok. all right, we have 3 ayes and

>> thank you for joining us on the ribbon cutting 4 car 15. this car, the design, the poor plan, is from over 100 years ago. if -- the blueprint is from over 100 years ago. if you think about it, cable cars are the longest serving transportation can say is that we have in this city. they build these by hand using

the original blueprint and the original dies, two tons of steel, over three types of wood. we are so proud of the work they are doing. this car will have its inaugural run today but i imagine 100 years from now, think of the people who will run this car. people come from all of the world to visit the city. i would like to turn it over to our mayor, someone who has a vision that is built into our transit first policy. we have the great leadership of our mayor is continuing to stick to the vision of a green

technology. >> it depends on his mood whether he wanted to let that a break ago. thank you very much for coming out, great to see you open. they elevate that sense of spirit and pride that we have in san francisco. this is why people come out to the city and county of san francisco is to experience not only the sights and sounds of the cable car but the thrill of the cable car ride. i had the privilege of living on a cable car line for the past five years. this reminds me of how fortunate i am and how much i love this great city. we are very blessed to have starts of the system for a generation. i want everyone to recognize

today as the former mayor and dianne feinstein's leadership. it was her leadership as mayor that preserved these cars. they were on the press at this of going away. -- press thprecipice of this gog away. cable cars connect us to our proud past. this is an expensive endeavor. i know that things come at a price. this investment into this cable car was roughly $800,000. it was a lot of money.

it was worth every penny. it could be possible to bring these together. these are historic cars. you cannot bring a new cable car and bring some plastic and refurbished sheet rock. you have to bring it back to its original glory. we will put some local dollars up so this was not a big general fund contribution. it is part of a $17 million commitment that we have to the cable car vehicles over the next number of years. we have 24 million over the next 10 years that we will address in the infrastructure. a real commitment to make sure that we have to raise the bar. it could not be possible, not only the money but the craftsmanship and the work and the passion is the example in

tour groups like mr. toad. how about a big round of applause for the guys and girls who work at our cable car center? [applause] well done, guys. this is the original color that was actually there in 1893. the original colors. the details you will see on the glasswork, all of the glass fittings, all of those details are examples here. the cross mission and the sense of pride that goes with the folks that work here at the the cable car company.

i am very excited to be here for this inaugural journey. thank you very much for coming out. thank you to the leadership of the board and all of the board members. thank you to the taxpayers of san francisco. thank you to all of our tourists that i see here for coming to san francisco and keeping this city going. well done. the inaugural journey. you guys have had

>> in this fabulously beautiful persidio national park and near golden gate and running like a scar is this ugly highway. that was built in 1936 at the same time as the bridge and at that time the presidio was an army and they didn't want civilians on their turf. and the road was built high. >> we need access and you have a 70 year-old facility that's inadequate for today's transportation needs. and in addition to that, you have the problem that it wasn't for site extenders. >> the rating for the high

viaduct is a higher rating than that collapsed. and it was sapped quite a while before used and it was rusty before installed. >> a state highway through a federal national park connecting an independently managed bridge to city streets. this is a prescription for complication. >> it became clear unless there was one catalyst organization that took it on as a challenge, it wouldn't happen and we did that and for people to advocate. and the project has a structural rating of 2 out of

100. >> you can see the rusting reinforcing in the concrete when you look at the edges now. the deck has steel reinforcing that's corroded and lost 2/3's of its strength. >> this was accelerated in 1989 when the earthquake hit and cal came in and strengthened but can't bring to standards. to fix this road will cost more than to replace. and for the last 18 years, we have been working on a design to replace the road way, but to do in a way that makes it appropriate to be in a national park and not army post. >> i would say it's one of the most ugly structure, and it's a

barrier between the mar sh and presidio. and this is a place and i brought my dogs and grandchildren and had a picnic lunch and it was memorable to use them when we come here. what would it look like when the design and development is completed. and we are not sure we want an eight lane highway going through this town. and it's a beautiful area in a national seaport area on the planet. >> the road is going to be so different. it's really a park way, and it's a parkway through the national park. and they make the road disapeer

to the national park. >> and the road is about 20 feet lower, normally midday, you go through it in two minutes. looking back from the golden gate bridge to presidio, you are more aware of the park land and less of the roads. and the viaduct will parallel the existing one and to the south and can be built while the existing one remains in operation. and the two bridges there with open space between them and your views constantly change and not aware of the traffic in the opposite direction and notice the views more. and the lanes of course are a foot wider than they are today.

and they will be shoulders and if your car is disabled, you can pull off to the edge. and the next area, the tunnel portal will have a view centered on the palace of fine arts and as you come out, you can see alkatrez island and bay. and the next area is about 1,000 feet long. and when you come into one, you can see through the other end. it's almost like driving through a building than through a tunnel. and noise from the roadway will be sheltered. and the traffic will be out of view. >> when you come out of the last sort tunnel and as you look forward, you see the golden dome of the palace of

fine arts and what more perfect way to come to san francisco through that gateway. >> it will be an amazing transformation. now you read it as one section, the road is a major barrier and then a wonderful strip along the water. all of those things are going to mesh together. >> right now the road really cuts off this area from public access. and with the new road, we will be able to open up the opportunity in a new way. >> this bunker that we see now is out of access for the general public. we are excited to completely rework this side and to open up the magnificent views. and what we want to do is add to this wonderful amenity and

restore this coastal bluff area and respect its military history and the doyle drive project is allowing us to do that recorrection. and this area is not splintered off. >> and we can see how dramatic a change it will be when doyle drive is suppressd and you have a cover that connects the cemetery to this project. it's historic on the statewide and national basis, but you could rush the project or put thought and time to create something of lasting public benefit. >> we really want this, for everyone to feel like it's a win situation. whether you are a neighbor that lives nearby or a commuter or

user of the park. that everyone will experience a much better situation than they currently have. >> the human interest to me is how people could work out so many challenging differences to come to a design that we believe will give us a jewel. landmark of a place. >> i am sure it will have refining effect like embark did. and there were people about that and no one would think of that today. and when you look at growth and transformation of the embark, the same with doyle. it will be a cherished part of the city and a worthy addition to what is there. >> it will be a safe and beautiful entrance to a spectacular beautiful city. it will be the entry to golden

gate that san francisco deserves. >> i work with the department of environment and we are recycling oil. thank you. we can go into a refinery and we can use it again. they do oil changes and sell it anyway, so now they know when a ticket to a. hal>> to you have something you want to get rid of? >>
