thank you. president mendoza: a presentation to the board from the superintendent. superintendent garcia: i does want to remind everyone that this is that time of year when the enrollment deadline is coming. next friday is the enrollment application deadline for the march placement period. in addition to submitting your application to the educational submit center here at 555 franklin st., applications can also be turned into the temporary satellite office collections sites, and we will do it so you can see it out there in the public. wednesday, february 9, before 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at an elementary school pet -- at elementary schools, and we will put up the addresses.

thursday, february 10 at -- monday, february 14, valentine's day, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at daniel webster elementary school, and wednesday, a figure 16, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at francis scott key elementary school -- february 16. remember, our district has a pretty complicated choice. this is an opportunity. you have to submit to applications, and also, i hate to say this, but we expect the public to be honest in these applications. this year, we have had hundreds of people that we have found out. they are being booted out of different schools. it was not a nice thing to do, but you have to be honest and be a good role model for your children and everyone else, but

we have to make sure that san franciscans get priority at the schools that they are paying access or, so i think that is fair to everyone. we want everyone to be on top notch behavior in submitting these things so our children get the best education. the highlights, this week, we are celebrating national school counseling week, so the big shot out goes to all of our counselors in the district. they are doing great jobs -- a big shout out. i know that is really a lot of hard work. to all of you councilors out there, we really appreciate the work that you do with our kids in the city. and last, i want to mention, yes, we can applaud for our counselors. [applause] last, sometimes we always hear what is bad, but something that is really good is the usda undersecretary to they visited our district, and they are recognizing us for the great

work our schools are doing to promote good health, nutrition habits in our students. at the elementary school, the undersecretary watched student coaches leave their peers in a variety of outdoor games, learning how to prepare healthy snacks -- watched student coaches lead to their peers -- lead their peers. sometimes people are critical, but at the same time, we have national figures coming in and recognizing us. we are really at the cutting edge of what our kids are eating, so that is something we should all be really proud of. i want to thank you, and let's have a good meeting. president mendoza: thank you, superintendent. he was very impressed with our school and the way we are dealing with things , so the thank you. we also have something really

special tonight, in recognition for our board certified teachers -- a recognition. this is one of the special evenings where we recognize teachers who have worked very hard to obtain higher recognition for the work that they do, so, superintendent? superintendent garcia: and i do think that san francisco unified has something to brag about. especially after this crop goes through, we will have the most certified teachers, statistically speaking, so i want to congratulate them. [applause] i want to introduce roger. >> commissioners, superintendent garcia, we are really proud of our board teachers. the teachers have completed a rigorous national assessment process that identifies them as meeting the national standards, accomplished and highly effective teachers.

as the superintendent said, with the addition of these 33 certified teachers, san francisco unified school district has one of the highest concentrations of nationally board certified teachers in the nation, representing over 5% of our classroom teachers, and we thank each and every one of those teachers who have achieved this honor for their hard work to be a great deal of credit goes to one teacher, who is standing to my left -- for their hard work. a great deal of credit goes to one teacher, who is standing to my left, and her boss, who is sitting right here to my right. i want to thank them both, and a special thanks to superintendent garcia who has been handling this program throughout his tenure year. this year's recipients represent elementary, middle, high-school, bilingual programs, language immersion programs,

mathematics, english, health, multiple subjects, and this year, we had teachers from our juvenile court schools, so, again, we are very proud of their achievement, and i am now going to hand this out to kay garcia. we are fortunate to have her with us today. she is a national board certification director, in and she has some short remarks and a letter to korea -- and she has some short remarks in a letter to read from the national superintendent. >> -- and a letter to read. >> good afternoon, president mendoza, commissioners, superintendent garcia. i want to thank you for the support. this would be to recognize the newest san francisco a cheaper -- teachers to achieve this certification.

we now have 200, a nice round number of nationally board certified teachers, and so, i will be reading a letter from our president, to the national board teachers. der 2010 national board certified teachers in san francisco -- dear teachers. i congratulate the teachers of the san francisco school districts to achieve certification. as a native californian, i regret i cannot be with you in person to express my pride in the fact that you are now among the 3% of all teachers in this country who hold the distinction of being nationally boards sorted five. moreover, this new class dispose -- this new class gives a total of 200 national board certified teachers, the second most of any school board in the

state, and, of course, you can imagine which one has the most. it is that large neighbor in the south, which we do not need to mention. [laughter] to gain certification, you have to find evidence to combine student learning with your teaching. this is not an easy task, and you are to be commended for your commitment, integrity, and perseverance. effective teaching is the foundation of any effective school, and i urge you to build upon your achievements by taking a leadership role and encouraging your colleagues to accept the challenge of national board certification. a sincere thank you for the work that you do each and every day and for your dedication to the students of san francisco. sincerely, joseph. item d, our student delegates' report. student delegates: the packet has been distributed. march 18. the third item is the student delegates application is moved. oh, -- president mendoza: also, lisa from the department of public health came through to spread the news that there is a new immunization program for the start of the 2011-2012 school

year 47 to 12th graders. -- for 7th through 12 graders. there is a group of leaders to all try to improve the quality of life in schools by bettering the social climate in the schools. president mendoza: thank you. commissioner? commissioner: i was wondering if you would not mind broadcasting how students can attend the summit. can they attend if they want to prove or is the only for high schoolers? >> -- students delegate: there is a limit of 15 per high- school. advisers choose the students who

get to go, and they are all going to get picked up from their schools. president mendoza: 80. so item -- thank you. so item e is the parent advisory council report, the pac. >> good evening. my name is michelle. i am the proud parent of two daughters in district schools. i am also a member of the parent advisory council, which is why i am here before you today, to present the report, and i just want to give a shout out to all of the teachers who just got their certification. i know it is a lot of work. i just really want to thank them for all the they do and all our teachers do.

so just going to present the report. february 11. for those you are in the audience or are just listening, the wall of the parent advisory council is to inform the board policy discussions and decisions. this report addresses the pac's work for extending equality after-school programs and providing assistance to the newly formed family advisory council. so access to after-school programs. this year, there are many more initiatives, and the pac is working to make sure that people understand and can help change these. this includes access to high- quality after-school programs. for several years, the pac has had a seat on the council, and i am currently the one who sits in that chair. that chair. this includes district and ci
