8:00 pm
washington. i am with quality of life resource center. the young lady on the board asked what happened to dr. grey. dr. gray happened. that is what happened. judy's little sister came to our church on sunday, and she talked to us about imelda k, and i told her, we were well aware of what was going on, -- talked about mlk, and i said we are well aware what is going on. everything dr. gray has put into writing, you need to check it. they are happy children, but they are dumb? where did that come from? i talked to the mayor's office about that. i do not even know what she
8:01 pm
looks like, but for that to come out of her mousth? this has got to stop. this has got to stop. [applause] >> good evening, superintendent, board members. i have got three kids. my young son goes to hoover. -- i am sorry. my younger son -- my older son goes to hoover, and my daughter goes to martin luther king. i can sit here and tell you the experience i had all three years. as a parent, i am very
8:02 pm
disappointed with the school board. my kids went to school there since they were born. that is very unbelievable. we miss you over there. thank you. from my daughter and my son, we miss you. i could stay here all day, but i am going to make it short. if you really want to know what i went through, buchanan and now talk to martinas, take a look at the files, of the things -- you
8:03 pm
can talk to martinas, take a look of the files and all the things i went through. i would say out of 100 staff, only 10 staff were not doing their jobs. i walked up to the counselor and asked, and you know what the answer was? i ain't got time to talk to you. a walk away and he yelled at me. >> i am going to need you to wind up. >> she did not want to speak to me. any child for my child i have a
8:04 pm
right to be explained to. -- any decision for my child, i have a right to be explained to. i am very disappointed with the principle. 3 remember the day the rat poison was going on? i was the one who called the ambulance. my daughter called me. nobody was there to make a right calls. >> i am going to have you speak with a staff member on this so your issues can be addressed. >> i would like you to do one thing as of board. listen to the parents and listen to the teachers who are actually doing something.
8:05 pm
listen to the people out there. i am one of the parents who give a damn. thank you. [applause] >> good evening, everyone. my name is nancy, and i have been here over and over again, so this time i am saying, if you give us a parent of voice for our children, -- as parents of boys for our children, but you continued to not -- you give us terparrents a voice, but you continue to not listen. you continue to hire your friends rather than the most qualified candidates to work with our children.
8:06 pm
school staff and leadership in no way reflects observers' demographics of the students that we serve. the mandates of the complaint were specific to the bayview hunters point and the southeast sector of the city. what good has that done us? i thought i was making a difference consistently coming before you, a voice for our children, but i must say, shame on you, because you continue to do what you have always done, and therefore, will never solve the achievement gap of the population, so we continue to remain under served, neglected, and forgotten. i want to thank all of a view, everyone here to represent our children who -- all of the bayview, everyone who is here to represent our children. thank you.
8:07 pm
>> good evening, superintendent, educators. i am here to talk about for continuing difficulty we see in the district administration. as i have told you before, this year has been a litany of disaster at that school, and it has been caused by the administration, not by the staff. the administration elected the teachers without revaluating them. they withdrew from the program because they did not want to be investigated and have it evaluated. the newest out rate is seven out of 11 teachers received consolidation and not -- the newest outrage is seven out of 11 teachers receive consolidation notices.
8:08 pm
the reality is some of the credential issues are not even right because you change how you are having the student attended. you are not mixing kindergarten kids with older kids. you need to do something different. if what you are trying to do is shut it down, and be honest about it. do not try to fool the parents, because you are not fooling them. do not try to fool the teachers, because you are not fooling them either. the honest about it. [applause] >> i am a teacher. i am here to speak on behalf of our enthusiastic art teacher, emily van dyke. family is one of our most enthusiastic teachers and -- family is one of our most enthusiastic teachers, who --
8:09 pm
emily is one of our most enthusiastic teachers, who consistently gets results. she is an advocate. she works on behalf of not just students but also our school by way of being involved in numerous committees, and just reflecting a constructive adult attitude to our students, someone that is positive, open- minded, and honest with them. thank you. [applause] >> i am susanna morgan. i am an art teacher with the star arts program that is being
8:10 pm
consolidated, so i have been an art teacher for four years, and every year i have received a layoff notice. in the past, budget came through, and i was able to keep my job. this year, my services are no longer needed. i cannot begin to tell you how it is heartening to this process is. i work hard. -- how is heartening -- disheartening this process is. i work hard, yet every year my job is devalued. i chose to teach art because when i was in school it was the one subject where i could xl. it was the one class were my imagination was incorrect and wrong answers did not exist. it was the one place i found strength in school. there are students who need the arts to thrive and to keep them
8:11 pm
motivated in other subjects. our students need the opportunity to be able to express themselves through an art form, and they should have that opportunity in public education. by cutting the arts, we are getting further from our goals of providing equity to all students. we are telling the students the arts are only for the middle- class and wealthy. we are telling the students and their love of drawing, playing the violin, and dancing are no longer value. joyful learning includes teaching the whole student. [applause] >> i also teach with susanna. i have been a teacher for seven years, in the last four and a half in which i have seen in the star arts program. im and a itinerant teacher who teaches visual arts in -- i am
8:12 pm
an id itinerant teacher who teaches visual arts, and i want to emphasize the importance of this program. the star visual arts program currently serves 18 star schools. they are the underperforming, underserved elementary schools. 11 of us go to these schools and teaching standards-based, culturally-relevant curriculum to 3000 students a week. every public school who should have the same opportunities. the higher performing often have the resources to raise four consultants. star schools are generally unable to do so. by taking away art at these schools, students will lose unique opportunity for learning. now i have an essay from a

fourth grade students at hobbit elementary school -- cobb elementary school. "i have many special memories of fourth grade. i really enjoy art class. it lets me express what i feel and what i know. it also lets me express my imagination. i also enjoy it because it is relaxing. please consider. please, i urge you to save as the star program. thank you. net >> my name is patricia christiansen. i am also an itinerant star art teacher. i have two works i would love to show you, and in order to appreciate it, you should see it up close. it just came from the arts

festival, and these were both gone from a special day classes -- both done in a special day class. it is absolutely amazing. all the switching, of a quilting, all the embellishment was done by fourth and fifth grade students at eldorado. i put it together. it is now a permanent installation at the school. to my knowledge, it is the only quilts that belongs to the school. would you like to see it? all but stitching, all the embellishment from the students. miss battista, the special day teacher at cobb -- we go to a

different school every day. these are her third and fourth grade students, and it is another quilt. what the students did with these days it -- these basic skills, they will always be able to repair their clothes. it is really a joy to teach these students. again, a permanent installation at cobb. thank you. [applause] >> good evening.
8:16 pm
i am a parent of when a visa elementary school. -- of buena vista elementary school. it looks like the people that cut the school budget did not care about the education of our kids. why do they not cut money from people at the top? maybe because they would never do something against themselves. it is not fair. it is ridiculous that for each 10,000 in kids, they waste 100,000. it is not fair. the other kids are watching tv or playing with electronic games or may be in the streets.
8:17 pm
those with a lot in their pockets should lend to education programs. i would like to ask the school board to use our funds to reduce this. find solutions to the budget cuts. cut from the top and not from programs that help our kids. thank you. [applause] >> good evening, everybody. my child attends a a point of these the elementary common -- a 1ttends buena vista elementary. i would like to ask the board
8:18 pm
members to please stop the budget cuts. it really affects our students' education. it is already the lowest in the nation. i would like to ask that you please stop laying off teachers and stop cutting back on programs. it affects us members as parents. every year, the school asked us to do fund raising. a more fund-raising we do because of budget cuts, every year the list they give us to provide supplies because of budget cuts do not allow enough supplies, and the list keeps getting longer. we also provide fruits and vegetables as healthy snacks, because of budget cuts do not allow that any longer. as a parent, i would like to ask the school district to please stop the budget cuts for our children's education and
8:19 pm
also laying off teachers and principals. thank you. i also have 273 letters from parents also asking to stop the cuts for our children's education. >> i am going to call the last names, and i am not going to be taking any more cards after i call these last names. [list of names] >> [speaking spanish]
8:20 pm
hello, my name is angelica. i come from cesar chavez elementary. i am worried -- [speaking spanish] >> the thing that worries me is that my daughter had a problem. i spoke to the principle, but the principal said it was nothing. i have a social worker who works with me, sir she placed a report
8:21 pm
against the situation. >> [speaking spanish] >> i would like to suggest that you implement -- code attention to violence, because violence is hurting -- put attention to violence, because violence is hurting our children, so i would like to suggest a program to help kids with communication so when they go to high school they have the skills to communicate
8:22 pm
with each other. >> [speaking spanish] >> next year, i would like to request for you guys not to throw our words on air. we do need after-school
8:23 pm
programs. my daughter did not get into a summer program, and i spoke to the principle and to the assistant principal because she did not get into the program. eventually, she got into one, so she went into a summer program for masth. >> [speaking spanish] >> i would also like -- she is going to the program, and i would like close to continue and
8:24 pm
that you really listen to our voices and that they did not go up into the air. also, i would like to know who we can go to when we have situations of sexual harassment, violence, verbal abuse, and for kids who are overweight, they have been called names, and i find that absolutely disrespectful. >> [speaking spanish] >> thank you for living who -- for listening, and i hope you are reflecting on what i say, and that you go to the schools and pay attention to what is going on with our children.
8:25 pm
thank you for listening, and i will be listening to some responses. >> they are waiting to speak with her. thank you. >> i am a mother of a 12-year- old, and we had a process for the community for parents and staff to select our new principal and the panel took time out of their schedule to interview. and we made our selection and shows the most experience and a qualified candidate for the job. we expressed the qualities we needed. was the process followed?
8:26 pm
what was the purpose to interview candidates if you already determined who you were going to a point? was this all a show? we demand quality education with quality, experienced staff. we need somebody in our community that understands our children as well as other children and information for all families. thank you. >> i debated coming up here and talking, because i see your physician is an uncomfortable one. you have to make hard decisions -- your position is an uncomfortable one. if you have to make hard
8:27 pm
decisions. my kids attend naloxone -- lawton. there are no parents from those schools. that is why i send my kids to those schools. i understand what these parents are saying, but i helped her parents individually. i am here for fred franklin. he knows how to work with our parent population. what is happening is unacceptable. you need to look at this situation.
8:28 pm
he brought them together and made a family, and for him to be on administrative leave is unfair, because he did his job, and it does not go with the new position. think about that. when you took on this job, you took on responsibility. you need to question the challenges that come up. thank you. >> good evening, board members, commissioners, and superintendent. my name is diane gray. i am recently retired. i am also a member of the census
8:29 pm
go alliance of spikes school educators, and i run a nonprofit organization. today i am in paris to say i am a retiree of the district because of the travesty that has taken place in closing and willie brown academy. -- i am embarrassed to say i am a retiree of the district because of the travesty has taken place. i have gone out to other schools. the final straw was putting the parent liaison on paid administrative leave, and i do not know what the reason is, but i can tell you i was an employee when treasure island school closed, another tragedy, and now we have some willie brown, the same thing over and over again, and what i see is a commonality of the types
