since 1976. >> how did you decide to be a street artist? >> i was working on union square. on lunch hours, i would be there visiting the artist. it was interesting, exciting, and i have a creative streak in me. it ranges from t-shirts, jackets, hats. what is the day of the life of a street artist? >> they have their 2536 in the morning. by the end of the day, the last people to pack the vehicle probably get on their own at 7:30 at night. >> nice to me to condemn the -- nice to meet you. >> it was a pleasure to share
5:01 pm
this with you. i hope that the bay area will descend upon the plaza and go through these arts and crafts and by some holiday gifts. >> that would be amazing. thank you so much for the hard work that you do. >> i just want to make a public statement to acknowledge that appointments to the police commission and any commission which is a policy-making body is very important. i want to encourage about keep in front of our minds the importance of not only to elect
5:02 pm
women, but to work to get more women appointed to these bodies that help make legislative decisions for our city and county of san francisco. >> i am from san francisco. i grew up in the local neighborhood. i did my under deprad wait work at fisk university, where i studied political science with a concentration in public administration and worked eight years largely in the public sector. then i earned a master's degree from carnegie melon in pittsburg, pennsylvania. i spent some time as assistant executive director for a non-profit. we did work if a lot of kids in the neighborhood. i have done fundraising for candidates and issues. i have experience with the federal reserve bank of san francisco. when i look around my neighborhood and see the changes that are happening, i so there is no neighborhood grocery store. i see that small businesses in
5:03 pm
particular are coming and going, and they haven't been able to really sustain themselves. from my work experience in working for the city in the mayor's office as well as in the non-profit, i had a good sense as to what some of the challenges were. when i look in the future, i could see more challenges coming. i thought i had a set of experiences and more importantly a passion and desire to serve. >> i understand that no one wants to have their programs cut. of course not. i also want everyone here to understand that no one up here wants to cut programs because they don't care about the population being served. there are no value ains here. we are all on the same team. it is a tough situation, as we are here so that we can begin the work together. >> i am actually more forward thinking. for me it is less about being left or right, or in this town, moderate or progressive. it is really about the issues and about creating policies that will have a sustainable and lasting positive impact on
5:04 pm
the families that live here. it is very costly and difficult to do business in sfrinls, to raise your children in san francisco, and i would like to have a voice at that table to really create policies that will minimize that san francisco is not a big business-friendly city. i think we started to go in the wrong direction. the reason why we started walking down that path largely was because of political ideology. when you deal with me, you are dealing with facts, less than politics. i really want to have a positive impact on the city overall. >> good afternoon, everyone. how are you? >> good. >> it's a nice day today. thank you for coming out to our community event. please give a round of [applause] to them. we have a lot of development going on. you see how lovely leland street looks. do you like it? >> yes. >> beautiful, isn't it? we are going to continue. we have a library that is going to be opening up in june. that's right. so i will see you all there at the library. there is a lot of activity
5:05 pm
going on. it is important we remain connected and engaged. >> would you mind if we were to pull the seniors together and translate for me in a mini meeting? >> yes, sir. >> what we are going ready to do is we are going to have a quick little mini meeting to -- because we didn't translate my short message before. >> i just want to say i want to welcome everyone to the event. >> we have folks in visitation valley only talking with visitation valley. we have folks in bayview again only talking in a very small corridor of 3rd straight and the merchant corridor. we don't have people talking to the hill merchant association, doing patch. all these fragrmented conversations are happening, largely talking about the same thing, crime, keeping the
5:06 pm
streets clean, supporting sbaubs. that is something i made a concerted effort on the campaign to build bridges. >> along third street, dog patch, and everyone along the cord door has the same complaint. >> i have the same complaint. >> we have the third street merchant corridor and an opportunity to revite lies what i consider to be the main artery of the business district. it is a pretty long street. there is a lot of opportunity there. let's not squander that. when we recruit businesses, we want it to be a healthy mix that reflects the cultural history of the southeast part of the city. we are all human, and how to connect with that human spirit, whether you are in public housing, own your own property, or if your asian, african-american, male or female, we are really a community. when we start to realize and move in the direction of being
5:07 pm
humans and having this human experience and connecting together, really if you will, being each other's keeper, then san francisco really begins to continue to thrive. >> we are going to start this wonderful ground-breaking ceremony with some dancing from our neighborhood youngsters. here to do that are the whitney young dance group. let's give them a big round of applause and get started, folks. [applause]
5:19 pm
[applause] >> great to see you everyone. this will be the bayview neighborhood library. think about low wonderful cultural merit we will have for future generations to come. i also wait to make a shot up to one of the assistant superintendents who is here. thank you for being here and inspiring our young people to do great work. i am the city library and. it is my honor to be your emcee today. it is a program that we begin the ceremonies today by having an invocation. so i would like to call to the podium dr. walker, from the true
5:20 pm
hope church of god and christ. dr. walker. [applause] >> to the state leadership, san francisco leadership, and community leadership, let me say to all of you who are here today as a make preparations to indulge in prayer, i would like to get your attention. this is of great and wonderful day for the city, st. francis, by way of the golden gate. you cannot have a world-class city without will class leadership for the community and world class people. bayview hunters point is a world-class community. i thought i would read a couple of versus from first timothy chapters one vs one and two, which will be corporate for this invocation.
5:21 pm
would you be so kind to doubt your head momentarily. first of all, prayer, and giving of thanks be made of all men. four kings and all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceful life in godliness. in the name of god and jesus, we thank you that the leadership of this groundbreaking for this place of wisdom, the place where they can come and make this community more positive. there are a lot of positives despite the negatives. this is a great positive thing. we can expand our village of knowledge. + mayor lee, supervisors, and
5:22 pm
those present who had something to do with the state today. amen. [applause] >> thank you for those inspiring words, doctor. today, we have to use our imagination. this is a large space that we will have within the next 18 months a beautiful state of the art library. if you can imagine hundreds of youngsters walking through the door here on third avenue, going into a wonderful spacious children's room, full of materials to inspire and have their creative juices flowing. then we will have another wonderful space on this side for teenagers, for them to be in a save in welcoming environment, for them to be created to develop their minds. what better place than a neighborhood library? behind me, a wonderful courtyard
5:23 pm
to enjoy days like today in the bayview. where you are seated in front of me, we will have an amazing collection of books, materials. this will be 25% bigger than the library that was already here. state-of-the-art with computers, wi-fi, providing access to our young people's. a wonderful community programs, lectures, to really represent the spirit of bayview. how about that for your new library? let me also say this community has been one of the models for community engagement. every neighborhood meeting we had, we had up to 100 people that held our feet to the fire, that told us exactly what you wanted to see happen. it was wonderful to work with
5:24 pm
you on that. thank you, bayview, for not only selling for a modest renovation, but for a brand new, wonderful library. there are many wonderful folks i want to take a moment to acknowledge because they have done a fantastic job in that effort. i want to start with a terrific asset we have, which we are fortunate to have with us, linda. she is fantastic. [applause] also from the neighborhood, a couple of folks that have been very active with our counsel of the neighborhood libraries. mary pavis and larry. [applause] thank you for involvement. and of course, ms. jackson. i do not see libya -- there we
5:25 pm
are. thank you for your fantastic efforts. we have not forgotten that we still need to have a library presents during this new building construction. so we have the ymca to thank, a couple of blocks, to offer services. so i want to thank the folks there. [applause] please forgive me if i forget any particular agencies, but the bayview hunters point project area committee -- let's give them a round of applause. they deserved it. [applause] we also have ron sanders. i do not think he is here -- there you go. this will represent the history and the culture of the bayview. thank you very much for your
5:26 pm
efforts on that front, ron. we have some elected officials here today. i appreciate all of you being here today. we are going to start with mayor lee. thank you for joining us this morning. >> thank you. good morning everyone. it is my personal pleasure to be here in the bayview. as i watched these kids danced this morning, i know all of you felt as i did, this is for them. they inherit the earth, this community, and everything we do today, everything we believe in is all for them. so we want our neighborhood improved. we want our whole community improved. i want to thank the people here coming with us. senator leno is here with us this morning. i have been here all morning with malia cohen looking at the
5:27 pm
projects that we have in this area. she is part of that young talent and i get to work with, as well as scott wiener. the board of supervisors have been working with me these past seven months, and we are trying to get a lot of things delivered. not a lot of political stance. getting stuff done. fulfiling old promises. promises that you heard decades ago. you saw me smiling this morning as i embraced this man, freddie carter. he is part of the construction team here. freddie was certified when i was the director of the human rights commission. he had a joint venture. it was a small firm, and they had to get some beer projects, and i remember, you went out and
5:28 pm
bought yourself a red truck. do you still have that truck? freddie is part of the kck general contractors team that formed the property bid on the dpw and library bid process. they ultimately won the right to build this. and guess what, he is local, right here in the bayview. that is important to me, personally, it is important to the city. that is why the library director works so hard with dpw, our human rights commission, to do it right. this is the right way to do it. i know reverend walker knows that. it is so important to this community that we not only buildings for the future, but in a way that everyone in the community participates.
5:29 pm
so that they know that we, as a city, as a community, built this library. not some contractor or a department that you never see. we are doing it more and more with our local hiring ordinance. we grabbed the talent from within. we can build a world class libraries for everyone else to come to. that is what i enjoy doing, that is why i am here. i am also here to praise the library commissioners who are with us this morning, friends of the library, the manager who will be here. the library is our future. we are constructing -- reconstructing libraries all over the city. every time we come to the community, libraries are welcome ca
