beginning. she served as the subcommittee chair. while dana has stepped down from her service, her work in child nutrition has not ended. it continues today at much higher levels. there is much work left to be done. i have had the privilege of working with dana for the entire nine years. i would like to express my gratitude for the work that she has contributed to student nutrition services. not only have we developed a personal working relationship, we have become friends. i wish to stand here and thank you for everything across the years that we have done together. [applause] >> i am a parent in the district. by last year as a parent in the
6:23 pm
district. i was a parent at the school in the 2002-2003 school year when it became clear that it was not ok to see children walking around with a 20 ounce pepsi and french fries. she was the one who conceived the pilot project to get the junk food out of the schools. and really got things going. she got approval from the superintendent. she started a committee, i join the committee. it would not have happened without her. she got thing started and put san francisco on the forefront. now dana has basically moved to
6:24 pm
a larger arena. she has started a web site. i can never remember quite what it stands for. parents, educators, and advocates connection for help the school for. -- school food. we should have a lot of faith and that this will make changes on a nationwide scale. i just wanted to do that. thank you. >> my name is mark. i am in the student support services department. i have had the pleasure of being hurt co-chair for the last couple of years. i am happy to see water and fresh fruit sitting in front of
6:25 pm
the desk. being a role model is important. i wanted to buy some flowers. i bought some succulents. they thrive in a rocky, sandy soil in times of drought. you grow them for the beauty of their leaves that they will produce a bright, brilliant blossoms at some point. that is what dana's work has been. it has been a pleasure to serve with you. >> good evening to members of the board of education. i am what the department of public health. i wanted to publicly thank her for all of her leadership. you are getting e-mails at 6:00
6:26 pm
a.m. and then again at 11:00 a.m. she is making an impact here and also at the national level. people always ask me if i know dana and they really have appreciated all of her writing. we are looking forward to all of the future work. >> thank you. >> board members. >> i would like to publicly thank dana for the work that she has done and the example she has been. this is the best example of how we can do something important because other people help us and demanded of us at the same time. i have been privileged enough to go to national conferences and talk about the things that we are doing here. always been clear that it has
6:27 pm
been the community that has helped us do this. this has been my most important example of how policy making is not what we want or what we do. it is about what we do in response as a company. i am so proud of all of the work we have done. i am so proud of all of you. you are not going to get away. i treasure that. there is lots of work to do. with your friends and community leaders, you can do that. commissioner norton: i would like to echo the appreciation of my colleagues. you have been an example. when i got involved as a parent,
6:28 pm
you were already in there in the trenches telling us how we could make this better. this year, my daughter started middle school. we had a fight about which day she gets to buy lunch and which days she does not. she wants to buy lunch every day. there is no bigger compliment. thank you for the work you have done and your advocacy. i have every confidence that others will step up and continue the work you have started. >> thank you. i just wanted to extend my warm affection to you as well. you took the rent -- nutrition task force on much further than we expected. we have had many food tastings. some went well and some did not.
6:29 pm
your persistence and your commitment to our kids is just overwhelming. you have turned our district on its head. we appreciate all of that. with that, our love and affection and wealth of thanks to you and all you have done. thanks very much, dana. we have 2 action items that will take place. i need a motion and a second for commendation to karen bishop. i am sorry. you guys answered before i was
6:30 pm
stunned. this is being introduced by commissioners fewer, maufas, and yee. >> karen bishop has served the students and employees of the san francisco unified school district for 44 years beginning when she was hired as a library technical assistant in 1968 until her retirement in 2011. she has been an active labor leader. and whereas karen bishop worked tirelessly to support workers and issues of pay equity, fair working conditions, and benefits. karen bishop served as president of the local 790 in 1992.

happiness thru our retirement. >> before you come on up, we have some formalities. i do not know if you wanted to speak on behalf of the fdiu. >> could we ask that all of our names be added to the resolution? >> you will have a separate time, karen, if you want to -- we have to vote on this still. >> good evening, superintendent, carlos garcia, and commissioners. it is my great honor to be here so that you could give karen
6:33 pm
this wonderful commendation. she has been a mentor to me and has taught me about being an activist and a fighter in this union. that is what i am, a fighter. i got that from karen. it takes a lot to do the work of a chapter president. people do not say thank you. they do not look to you and say you are ok. in the end, it is what is in your heart. i know that is a passion of karen's. when you are doing what is right for the people, you do not have a life. it is what is right for the folks. it is with that that i bring up miss karen bishop.
6:34 pm
[applause] >> i wanted to interrupt. i am dennis. many decades ago, about 13 or 14 superintendents' ago, karen and i started off at a junior high school together. karen came straight over from high school where she worked as a library tech. we have been working together since that time in all of the things we have done together in the school district. whether you want to blame the middle school for it, the water that runs under the school, or whether it is just some shared interest? she has been active in sciu since it only had four digits in its number. it was a great pleasure. i want to get out of the way so
6:35 pm
that she can call karen to the microphone and take her picture. >> not yet. any comments for the board? yes, no? yes, no? >> i have one comment. i would like to add to this. karen bishop is so well respected in the district. those of us on the other side of the bargaining table, i can speak for all of us that she represented her members very well. she is a very, very fine person and we wish her the best. [applause] >> i wanted to thank you for all of your years of service. you have been an amazing public servant. i remember being deathly afraid of view. i think that is what you wanted,
6:36 pm
which is great. i know what a softy you are, too. that is why your members love you. you will be deeply missed. you will be telling her from your home in retirement what she needs to do and what she should not do. if there are no further comments, let's do a roll call, please. >> yes. commissioner fewer: yes. commissioner maufas: yes. commissioner murase: yes. commissioner norton: yes. commissioner wynns: yes. vice-president yee: yes. president mendoza: yes. >> it is unanimous. president mendoza: if we could add at them as members of this.

>> superintendent garcia, president mendoza and the board of education commissioners, i have always told people i have been in school my whole life because i went to the school district, graduated, went to community college and then started working at the middle school. i have always been in schools. i always felt that it was a honor to work in schools. schools and do what you call a good works. they not only prepared children, they do not just educate them, but they prepare them to be responsible adults in this society. it was always an honor to be a
6:39 pm
small part of that. then i accidentally got a calling to be in the union. the reason i want my sisters and brothers to stand here with me is from the time i got involved, i knew it was not an i thing, it was a we thing. my involvement in the union was always for the members. they were the workers that were being buried giving. they were not only doing their jobs. the reasons they stayed working in the school district when they had opportunities to go somewhere else is because they care about the children. in a lot of respects, these are their children. usually when i stand before the board, i am asking for something.
6:40 pm
to ask for recognition of the members, to inform you about problems we are having, i never stood here for karen. as i am doing that today, i get to say thank you. thank you for my career. community when we had to tear down the old school and rebuild a new one. this is a great example of how to staff over a two-year period to create the design. as commissioner wynn pointed out, keeping some of the old parts of the past to integrate into the new building. the partnership that has with the community is a model to me as to how a school can work with a community to create the environment for students to learn at their best. congratulations, jean parker. commissioner maufas: i wanted to
