>> thank you, ron. now i would like to introduce father john, pastor of st. peter's and paul church, who will lead us in invocation and bless the new school. >> i consider myself a representative of all of the faiths, so if you're not a christian are catholic, it means no difference. just, we believe in the things that don this walkway here. fidelity, education, benevolence, and protection. made christ, the son of god, who was pleased to be known as the son be with you all, and also with you.
4:04 pm
a carpenter in those days was also a plumber and a pipe- feeder. [laughter] but they had no unions. [laughter] so let us pray. oh, god, the fullness of blessings comes down from you. to you, our prayers of blessings rise a. in your kindness, protect your servants who stand before you did out and faithful, bearing the tools of their trade. grant that their hard work may contribute to the perfecting of your creation and provide a decent life for themselves and their families. help them describe for our better society and to praise and
4:05 pm
glorify your holy name always. in your loving providence, oh, god, you have made the forces of nature subject to the work of our hands. grant that by devotion to our own work, we may gladly collaborate with you in the building up of creation. and so, may christ, the lord, who for our salvation tech on the burden of human toil, continue now to strengthen us with his help and give us this piece now and forever. amen. i am going to go inside for a minute, and you can continue and just throw a little bit of holy water around, not only for us but for the young men and women who practice their trade here and are educated in the trade of plumbing and pipe-fitting. [applause]

>> thank you, father. we will hear comments from a few people and in some important reductions. first, i would like to introduce mike arnt, director of trading for the united association. he is in charge of trading for every ua union in the u.s. and canada. we're pleased to have him here today to say a few words. mike -- [applause] >> get afternoon. it is a real pleasure to be here. nobody trains better than the united association, and there is no better example of their training than right here in local 38. local 38 as one of the finest training facilities in all of the ua, but that was not good
4:07 pm
enough, and that is what continues to make the ua what it is. locals like local 38. they were not going to sit down and just say that we have got the best. they're going to make sure that they continue to get better, make sure that they continue to have the best training. and that is the policy of the united association. and local 38's members should be very proud of their leadership that they're able to lead them down this road. i was reading through this little booklet here before i came up, and it gives a little history of training in the united association. it mentions the itf board, which runs all the training. it mentions that larry is a member of that board. what it does not mention is when the board was started, larry, senior, was one of the founding members and the chairman for most of the life of that board
4:08 pm
and has worked very hard, not only here in his local, local 38, to make sure that training is as good as it is, but has worked very hard all over hardua, through the itf, to make sure all local train like his local. his leadership goes beyond anything we can thank him for. i do want to thank you it at this time, larry, for all you have done for local 38 and for all you have done for the united association, and especially in the training. i have been very proud to work with you over the years. [applause] and i am just as proud to work with larry, jr., now on the itf board. it is what we're all about. this is it. we have one thing to sell. that is ourselves. we do not make anything. we have our skills to sell in the united association. and we have to make sure that those skills are always better
4:09 pm
than anybody else, and that is what they do here in local 38. they said the bar, and they continually raise the bar and make sure that they are the best. and for that, congratulations to all of you. you have done a fantastic job, and i am very proud to be here today. thank you very much. [applause] >> thank you, mike. next, i am honored to introduce the mayor of san francisco, mayor ed lee. although he has only been mayor for a short time, he is doing everything he can to get the residents of san francisco back to work. he is a big proponent of training. it why, mr. lee, for taking the time after your busy -- and taking time out of your busy schedule to be here today. mayor lee. [applause] >> thank you, larry, and larry
4:10 pm
senior, and brother, and welcome to san francisco. thank you everybody for coming this morning. i would like to let you know how honored i am to be part of this announcement today for this great training center and joint center yee and the assembly when men and supervisor cohen and other supervisors are here, and joining all of you in a labor council, people from all walks of life, from business and labor, to join on a celebration, a wonderful celebration right here in the bayview. you know, you're going to hear a lot of people comment about why you named this center, but there's a very, very good reason. it is one of those rare opportunities that i will say to larry that actually i wish i was older, because in those years, the 1950's and 1960's, is when we could have met the great man of a joke missoula -- joe
4:11 pm
mizzola and to watch what he did for all the working men and women, how he helped them get jobs and good training and to participate in one of the greatest the ins in the city. but i also let you know that in my younger years, i have gotten to meet larry and larry and now steve and seen them take up the mantle of their father and great grandfather, to see how they have been doing it here in san francisco, and i also want to let you know that the center, its location being just a couple blocks between our baby police station, and the captain is here -- good to see you, and our housing authority, who has got a lot of work here. thank you, henry, right here in the middle is
4:12 pm
where a lot of good training will take place. the city passed the local hire ordinance. i know that larry has had a lot of the advice to the city about how that works. one thing we do have an agreement on is that it is not so much about the ordinance that we pass, is what we do to promote the hiring of people. this center is one of the most important things we have ever done to exhibit how we hire and train people. this center has the most modern training facilities. it has all the wonderful modern things you do. it even has how to rig up new things and put in new boiler systems. it will train new generations of people who work in our bay terminal, on the america's cup, all the different improvements we will do. i will know that this training
4:13 pm
center will be here to train generations of people to be the best plumbers, pipefitters, and to participate in the quality of life you are offering right here when they get trained. larry, we are beyond words today. what we see here is a testament. it is not just an ordinance that we believe in. it is the belief that people can train themselves to better their lives. this training center represents that. on thbehalf of the city and couy of san francisco, i want to give you our plaque and announce this to be joseph snizzle lucked training center day in san francisco. -- joseph ma zzola training center day in san francisco. 4:16 pm
to seven parts in visitation valley and further north along third street. we have development happening in alice griffith, hunters view. this is to present this. this is the point where leaders will come together to continue to move san francisco into the 21st century. training will happen right here at this facility. -- this is the press of this -- precipice. thank you for making an investment in our community. i also want to thank our other brothers and sisters share from labor. it is not justified or struggle that the elected leaders can take up on our own. it is the site where we need the help of labor as we walked forward to transform this great city. we will continue to be a world- class city providing jobs and
4:17 pm
opportunity for everyone. there is room at the table for everyone. we're going into a pretty heated election cycle. i want to encourage you to stay the course and continue to look at the big picture. that is to make sure that the local economy thrives. it is going to start right here, today. thank you.
