committee member for the association of chinese teachers. this is danny, our president elect. the association of chinese teachers raised $24,000 this year. we are proud to award 12 students scholarships to further their pursuit in higher education. seven of them are here today. the first is nancy chen from washington. [applause] sandy from lincoln. [applause] rachel from lowell. [applause] i do not know if you guys know that one right there, jasimmine. [applause] happy from balboa. [applause]

michelle. [applause] another memorable face, joyce zhang. [applause] thank you. [applause] >> where are they going to college? >> i am going to davis. >> ok. >> to people on each side cannot be seen. >> i know these iphones. that is nice.

very nice. >> and to introduce where they will be attending. >> i will be attending uc- berkeley -- i mean, davis terry -- i mean, davis. [laughter] >> i will be going to uc santa cruz and i will major in sociology. thank you. >> i will be attending elmhurst college in massachusetts. i do not know what i majoring in either. >> cal. >> i am going to study government at harvard. [applause] >> another scholarship winner who was not here was going to join us but he could not make it. that concludes. thank you. sf state and he plans to join the san francisco police academy. president yee: the next group is the alliance of black school educators.

>> we have to have that bell, which is symbolic for all of us as educators. he is swahili and he has watched the news. we have good news tonight. and bad. we are surrounded by our 2012 scholarship recipients. on this beautiful tuesday evening in the city of st. francis, the san francisco alliance of black school educators, yours truly, vice president, we are pleased to present to normandy -- norman yee, rachel norton, distinguished commissioners, superintendent garcia, thank you

for your service to our students. we hope you will have the glow on your face like all retirees do. to our incoming superintendent, congratulations. we look forward to working with you. special thanks to my supervisor. dr. patricia grey, who just retired. linda. we welcome our new vice president. and to our belovedesther. good evening again. it has been a great partnership and we are grateful and thankful to each of you for your support in the many activities to bridge the gap for underserved african- american and latino students. commissioner maufas you have

always been there for us and we thank you for that. commissioner murase, you have opened so many doors for us, we can hardly say thank you enough. to all of you who have supported us, thank you. this banquet was held on thursday evening, may 17. a short walk from us, the african american community and cultural complex. we are so proud this young woman who loves the -- who runs the community, she got started with us and if a galileo graduate. now to present our 2012 scholarship recipients. i am pleased to introduce our president, and our scholarship chair person.

>> thank you, vice-president. i wanted to say we had the opportunity to give out 17 $500 scholarships. we partnered with 2 organizations, the hannibal lodge number one and the beta nu chapter. that made a wonderful evening with three organizations making a presentation. the v the valerie bell to come up and have our recipients introduce themselves. thank you. >> good evening. good evening. i guess i haven't offered two weeks of school without you guys. you are actually refreshed her it i am feeling very honored to

stand here to introduce our scholarship awards. they too have to write an essay and submit their grades and goals. they have to go through a 30- minute interview. we have three people over town interviewing them to go over there as said and talk about them. you would think we were giving away $25,000. we gave away $500. they were waiting and waiting for it each day that they interviewed, they were there. i want to give kudos to them. they are there to learn. we are raising scholars in areas of the bayview zone. all over the city, we have scholars who choose to get a higher education. they went the next step to achieve more and go away for college. we have, representing us

tonight, 5. after they finish, i will announce the ones that did not come. we will let them come. >> hello, everyone. i will be attending loyola marymount university in los angeles as a political science major. i am coming from galileo academy of technology. [applause] >> i am going to have each and everyone of them, around and shake your hands. they are going to remember this and you're going to remember it. >> my name is rosha. i am coming from lincoln high end going to the university of pennsylvania. school and i will be attending lincoln university in pennsylvania and majoring in political science. [applause] >> i am coming from mission high school and i am going to lincoln university to major in mathematics. [applause] >> i weddle and receive free scholarships -- i went to lincoln and received three scholarships. i will be attending the academy of art university in san francisco. [applause]

>> now i am going to let you know, the others who attended a banquet. it was just awesome. we had a great time. standing room only. nigel is the last one making his rounds. the other winners -- [laughter] this young man, in the interview, he made a sculpture out of a paper clip. he is going to the art institute. excuse me, the academy of art for it is not shy. arman taylor will be attending samson university. halima lewis, she will be attending san francisco state.

destiny joseph, she will be attending lincoln university. alexis hunter, she will be going to clark atlanta. theresa aaliyah abdul, she will be attending lincoln university. ashante dudley will be attending fisk university. centeria lashaw ragler will be attending lincoln university. tiffany mccoy will be attending lincoln university.

our final scholar, lana nicole anderson. she will be attending bennet college. she is our scholar that had a 4.0 gpa. awesome student. we want to thank you for the opportunity to announce these scholars because they are gone. we would like that one quick picture. president norton. let's give these scholars and everyone that graduated a big hand. [applause] every year, when we have these presentations, it makes all of us sitting around the podium or sitting around here very proud of our students. we're going to move onto item d, the student delegates report. this will be almost the last report given by joyce zhang and karissa tom. go ahead. student delegate zhang: we have nothing to report. our last meeting was the monday after school let out.

we are enjoying summer and we are ready to reconvene at the start of next year. student delegate tom: we could not leave these meetings. we love them and that is why we are staying for the summer. president yee: i want to take this opportunity, because, as i understand it, karissa, you will not be able to make the last meeting. i really want to wish you well. all of us here have been very rewarded that both of you have been on the school board of student delegates. he really do enrich what we are able to capture and hear from students. you have done a lot in communicating your thoughts, not only your thoughts, but the thoughts of all of the students that you are surrounded with. once again, i deeply appreciate

>> this is the subject -- the subject is the appointment of 10 members to the san francisco board of education parent advisory council. the requested action is that the board appoints nine regular members and one alternate member to serve through -- from july 2012 to june 2013. the recommended appointees are gaylin, angela, raul, amy, ishanna, tony, and john. president yee: ok. ruth, would you like to say a few words? >> i wanted to a knowledge the board, superintendent garcia. i staff the parent advisory council.

my son just graduated a couple of weeks ago from all high school. i found out at the end of the semester that he was a classmate of chris'. so it was really exciting to see other students be honored tonight. it is a really exciting time in your lives. i appreciate you for moving of this item to appoint new people. i am going to say a quick thing, that the members of the pac are really excited to welcome our new, prospective members. we are excited because the folks that are coming on bring a lot of energy, a lot of enthusiasm, and are really active in their children's schools and communities. we are looking forward to that. i want to let you introduce yourselves. say your name and where your kid to go to school. >> my name is gaylin and i am a

>> mike name israul. i have a daughter and a son who attends cesar chavez elementary school. president yee: for those that are not familiar, i am sure most of you are familiar with the current advisory council. i would like to say that this group of volunteers really put a lot of time into helping our district in terms of thinking from the parent's perspective. we should really acknowledged that. you are going to be doing a lot of work. when i looked at your resume, it got me excited because of what your doing, what you have been doing. i think this may be one of the biggest class of parents coming

in to thepac by far. i am very excited. i am sure the other commissioners are very excited that we will see you in the meetings and also, one by one, we will see you up here, giving us your records. that is going to be very exciting. congratulations. anybody else? commissioner fewer? commissioner fewer: i wanted to welcome all the parents. many years ago, i believe eight years ago, that i and some other parents actually wrote the resolution to have a parent advisory council in the san francisco board of education. i am thrilled that they have stepped up to represent the current voice in our district. i look forward to working with you on the issue that we have.

welcome and thank you very much. commissioner wynns: i just wanted to say that it was years and years -- we had three or four attempts at organizing some way to have a structured way for the parents to give input into policy making at the district level that were genuine. it just took awhile to figure out what would be a way to do this. i just want to thank everybody for the hard work that has gone into this. all the members of the pac. i have seen it evolves into something beyond what we have in vision, something really effective. you should know, i have been talking to people around the state and the nation about the work that you did with the student assignment process. how much we all learned about

doing outreach with parents instead of two parents. -- of to parents. i am impressed and this process seems to be improving for it in the past, we have not heard we have only three applications for eight spots. i think this is great and i want to particularly note the information you provided about diversity for it when we started out, we had a hard time getting it would to apply, except for empowered parents from middle- class schools. i am really pleased about this. i am really happy to be able to support this. commissioner murase: i do not want to repeat what has been said, but i want to recognize ruth, who has been such a great staff person. what impressed me most when i served on the pac was the care
