provider. our providers are not for operators. they are individuals leveraging a platform. really looking at those nuances, but also finding a way to make this credible. i think trust is a big issue in our community, and for people to understand the you do not have to use the hotel concierge or go on a doctor or to be safe in san francisco. >> i think our city leadership has learned quite a bit through this panel and through the previous discussion. for me, -- and i think for the rest of the folks in city hall -- there is a huge education component year. learning about these specific issues from these companies and other companies as well as our community members i think is a very valuable process, and being part of the conversation again and having that form of a working group, i think it will be really powerful to demonstrate leadership. we owe it to the community, and it is something we have to confront sooner or later, it is

>> i wish i could represent all city hall. i cannot. but i think that is part of democracy. there's always tensions. always other sites and perspectives we have to arbitrate and here are and figure out where that line is, how we actually negotiate that. that is part of the conversation. i do not think we should unilaterally just listen to whatever the schering economy companies are saying, nor should we do the same for the traditional companies. it is hearing both sides, understanding the different perspectives, a managing the risks, and seeing where as a city our values are and where we should be headed. >> can i add something? i would like to clarify -- this is not us versus them, new economy versus old economy. there is room for both of us. these are complete the experiences that someone would have in the old economy. the trick is figuring out what is different about this, making sure laws and regulations and

policies apply reasonably to this new economy, and make sure that there is room carved out for both. >> thanks for making that point. one more question? >> [inaudible] i'm curious if this conversation about companies devoted to schering physical space. the idea of using or facilitating, seven commercial space for nonprofits and that sort of thing. [inaudible] are there any modalities for sharing their? >> the question is there's a lot of vacant commercial space that could be mobilized for civil society, so is there a way to do that?

>> i know of one company, loose cubes. i'm sure there's others that many of you know there. >> i see mark in the audience there. do you want to explain what liquid space does? i think it answers the question, actually. >> [inaudible] [laughter] >> mark really got my attention recently. it launched a couple of months ago in san francisco and showed me his application on the iphone and made the statement that if

we use all the commercial real estate that we have, we would not need to build another building in our lifetime. so then asked him if he could write an article, so be careful what you tell me. ok, so, i was told one more question. anyone else to close it out? in the back there. >> [inaudible] > i guess, what i'm wondering is where do you see opportunities in this area? one of the exciting things about this is actually how we are building trust between people. >> the question is -- what are the barriers around trust, and what are some of the opportunities, right? >> i can start. it is a great question. i think trust is probably the

main barrier all of us face to get people over that hump of trying this experience for the first time. i think there is a major opportunity in trust and reputation-building for all of these collaborative consumption companies to work together. if you are a mentor and leave the place spotless and have been a good tenant, can you then rent a car on get around and bring that reputation with you so that people can see that you have participated in other sharing companies as well? i think there is a huge opportunity there for us to collaborate. there's a lot of companies hopping up in a specific space looking at the problem. i am advising a new company called project trust, which has no product yet, but just a general mission statement around this area, which you might find interesting. i would say there is a lot of innovation that needs to happen

there, and i think we can all work together to help cultivate trust across communities. >> i will push back a little bit. i do not think trust is as big a barrier as what i have been hearing. a recent study by a pr firm found that trust in big institutions is at an all-time low and that with that is an increase in trust in individuals and trust in each other, right? i think that is a huge opportunity. this is why it is happening, i think, and the sharing economy is emerging now. part of the reason it is happening is that social media is sort of like sharing training wheels, you know? you can share a link or remix a video with people from around the world and see how will it

was, and it is easy and low-cost and not risky, but there's a certain logic there that easily translates into the offline world. we did a survey, the first-ever survey research about sharing attitudes and behavior, and it showed that 78% of social media users were -- fell likely to share offline also. i think social media is like this, the thin edge of the wedge of the schering economy. it has kind of open the doors. -- of the schering -- the schering -- the sharing economy. that is our last question. i want to close quickly just by saying that our view about technology is that he is not an inanimate object that controls

our destiny. it is something that we decide and what we want. i feel like this is a very constructive conversation that is a stark about what kind of society we want to have, what kind of people we want to have. i want to thank the mayor, spur, our awesome panelists for a very rewarding panel. thank you. if i mispronounce your name. but, i will call you probably in groups of five, and again invite you to come forward. we will hear first from jim salinas, sally roth, richard goldman, paul hogarth and kevin stall. >> good morning mr. chairman. and members of the task force. i'm native san francisco, born and raised in the mission district, lived in san francisco all my life. i'm here on behalf of the san francisco democratic club hoping and looking forward to the decision of this task force. to repatriate the district, we're hoping that you will take the mission district from its current boundaries to the northern boundaries all the way to the freeway. we know for a fact that there are a number of latinos and latino families that live in that part of the city and we

luck in your deliberations. >> thank you very much. why don't you put that over there and i'll use this one for now. sally ross? >> good morning, again. my name is sally roth. i live in district eight. i am speaking in support of keeping the sunny side as i have been doing. people in district eight have worked long and hard from the beginning to help save it from destruction. and some of us who are friends of the conservatory have worked many hours recently as the last three years photographing the plants and making plant lists for it, that sort of thing. it really would be lovely if you could find a way to do that. once upon a time when back

earlier in this process the population was nicely balanced between the two, between the district sene and district eight i realized district eight has bulged out on the top and now it has been shrunken on the bottom, i find this some what problematic and i do indeed wish there was some way for you to find the ability to include the sunny side conservatory in glen park. which is an area of strong support. just because the name is not the same as the sunny side conservatory does not mean that the association does not support the sunny side conservatory. i believe that's about it. i have been beating the same drum for a long time, you're

probably tired of hearing it, but thank you for your intention and thank you for all your effort. >> thank you ma'am. richard goldman? and then paul hogarth and kevin stall. >> i have some maps for the task force. thank you. hi, thank you for your time and your work. my name is richard goldman, i'm a sunny side resident in my 20th year in sunny side. and i've been for most of that time ack tiff in the sunny side neighborhood association, including serving on the board as treasurer. as you know sunny side is one of the oldest neighborhood associations in san francisco. it was formed in 1974.

it was primarily formed to save the sunny side conservatory from demolition of the city, as well as improvements and neighborhood cohesion. the map that i put up for you to see, that you have before you on the overhead are the boundaries of sunny side neighborhood association, as well as glenn park neighborhood association. based on both associations by lot. so i want to thank you for the important changes that you have made by including the 200 block boulevard west of baden. into district seven, back into sunny side where it belongs. the sunny side conservatory is a gem and pride of our neighborhood and also our namesake. so thank you for all the sunnyside residents that will now be able to vote in district seven, along with our neighbors

on that block. and be part of our community of interest. thank you. >> thank you, sir. >> my name is paul hogarth and i want to commend the task force for all the stuff you have done for trying to keep the tender loin whole. by keeping the western boundary you've allowed tenderloin elementary school, a senior citizen housing and homeless shelter all to stay in district six and for that we thank you. crow did a lot of great work on the boundary which was a very difficult task as far as population. you've kept the most tenderloin parts into district six and for that we thank you. i'm here with one small request. on wednesday night when you were making non-population changes you moved two blocks over by halladay [applause] yao out of six and into three. i don't think this was your intent, but what it did was took the bristol hotel, which is an

s.r.o. of approximately a hundred people when eddie and market street out of six and into three. that is a problem, we are asking that you take just that one block of halladay plaza back into district six, and that you also not remove anything else from district six at this point. i realize you're trying to equalize populations, district three is at a deficit at about 3% or so, however you are allowed to go up to 5% in order to preserve communities of interest, you're doing that for other districts. i think district three having a slight 3.5% deviation in order to keep the tenderloin as a community of interest is important, and frankly the 100 people in that block is not going to go very far as far as balancing that deficit. so please, put that one block of western halladay [applause] yao back into district six and don't make any more changes and we'll be very happy. >> thank you sir. following mr. stol will be

michael nolty, lawrence reid, evans, and rose hilton. >> hello, my name is kevin stall and i live at 875 post street which, right now, you kept in district six and i wanted to say i thank you for that. i am a tenant organizer in my building and we worked with the bristol hotel, helping deal with issues with the tenants who live there that have problems that they did not solve. so we helped solve their issues for them. and we would like to continue to work with them as long as they stay in district six. it's only like a hundred people though, which is a very insignificant population addition to district three, but it would still be most important to keep the tenderloin as a community intact.

concerns. here today, i'm here today to talk about holiday plaza and the block from mason to market street. and this is this block here. this block is a part of the tenderloin, not union square. it is a part of the district, if you look at your maps, you'll see these are the boundaries of the central market c.b.d. and, this block contains the bristol hotel at 56 mason and many social services organizations at 944 market, which is right here. which i have to be a volunteer at one of those offices. please, so please place this block back into district six where it belongs. again for the audience out there in never, neverland, here again is another map of the market

to our community. redwoast keep our immunity together. moving the southern border to herman street was a big improvement, and really want to thank you for holding that. that keeps our commercial corridors all in one district. one more request is to consider moving 55 laguna into district five. the reason for that, first of all there's no population change would occur with that. and the second reason is we have been working many hours, working with the developers and mercy housing on including affordable housing, and right now we're working on an issue making sure that intergrates well with our community. there are some design issues that we're working with. already, in the last few months
